It felt like a flashback to the summer of 2023 along a crowded stretch of Sixth Avenue in Midtown Manhattan on Wednesday afternoon. A brass band played Bob Marley’s “Get Up, Stand Up” on the sidewalk as pedestrians streamed by, a man with a bullhorn led unison chants, and demonstrators held up picket signs with messages aimed at company bosses.
This wasn’t a strike picket, though. Members of the American Federation of Musicians of the United States and Canada (AFM) gathered on the doorstep of the old McGraw-Hill Building to kick off a new round of contract talks on the union’s TV Videotape Agreement, which covers the players on live and taped television programs such as Saturday Night Live and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

Jeremy Allen White says his Bruce Springsteen prep has involved a lot of YouTube rabbit holes — with some advice from the real-life rockstar peppered in.
White will play Springsteen in 20th Century and Disney’s Deliver Me From Nowhere. News of the movie’s production picked up earlier this spring, and the star of The Bear is now deep in preparation for the legendary role.
“I’m really lucky that there’s sort of a team of folks now in place to help young actors portray rock stars,” White told GQ. “I’ve got a really talented group of people helping me train vocally, musically, to get ready for this thing.”
In recent years, Austin Butler portrayed Elvis in Elvis, Rami Malek played Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody, Naomi Ackie played Whitney Houston in Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody and Kingsley Ben-Adir played Bob Marley in Bob Marley: One Love.

Music is a powerful force that connects members of a generation, and when an icon of that generation passes away, the loss is felt among the masses; it is especially shocking when that larger-than-life celebrity dies suddenly and at a young age. Sadly, we have lost several musical artists much too soon, often due to the pressure, exposure or commitments that come with fame. Tour our photo gallery remembering 30 music legends and the details around their tragic deaths.
I was only nine years old when John Lennon died, and over 40 years later, I remember sitting at the kitchen table hearing the report on the radio that crazed fan Mark David Chapman had shot the legendary singer to death. Musical biopics have picked up in activity as of late. Recently, the Bob Marley movie One Love encapsulated a notable story from the Raggae icon’s life. This year has seen the release of Back to Black, which told the story of Amy Winehouse. And this Christmas will see the premiere of A Complete Unknown, which brings James Mangold back to the music world with Timothée Chalamet occupying the shoes of Bob Dylan. Not to mention, in the future, we’re getting a Bruce Springsteen film with Jeremy Allen White as The Boss, and Sam Mendes is bringing The Beatles’ story to theaters across four feature films.
Deadline is now reporting that a Boy George biopic is now in development over at TriStar. It’s still in the early stages, but the movie is set to be written by scribe J.C. Lee, who co-wrote the film adaptation of his own play Luce.

John Legend, the acclaimed American singer-songwriter and pianist, has enthralled North American audiences with his tour, An Evening With John Legend.
Legend has captivated people with his soulful and R&b-infused sound, which has earned him widespread recognition and numerous accolades. This includes his achievement as the first African American man to win all four major American entertainment awards as of 2018.
Legend’s success, however, extends far beyond his musical prowess. He has become a prominent figure in the realm of social activism and is known to use his platform to advocate for meaningful change. Alongside his partner, model and TV personality Chrissy Teigen, Legend has been unafraid to voice his opinions on political and social issues.

The Grammys’ visual media field honors the best in music made for film, television and other formats. This year’s contenders range from blockbuster soundtracks to more under-the-radar but important material from critically beloved artists.
For Best Song for Visual Media, the race is full of plausible winners. Olivia Rodrigo could take home another Grammy this year here for “Can’t Catch Me Now,” the lead single from the “Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” soundtrack. There’s precedent for Rodrigo, as Taylor Swift previously won here for a song from the same franchise, “Safe and Sound” from the original “Hunger Games”; both, however, were snubbed by the Oscars.
Speaking of Oscars, one Academy Award-nominated song that could be a contender here is “It Never Went Away” performed and co-written by Grammy favorite Jon Batiste for his documentary “American Symphony.” Batiste doesn’t always win at these awards,...

Venice Film Festival competition title “Harvest,” directed by Athina Rachel Tsangari, is one of three films at the festival to be represented for sales by the Match Factory as well as being produced or co-produced by the company.
The other two are “Edge of Night,” the debut feature by German-Turkish director Türker Süer, screening in Horizons Extra, and “Sanatorium Under the Sign of the Hourglass,” an animated film by the Quay Brothers, playing in Venice Days.
Tsangari, the director of “Attenberg” (winner of Venice’s best actress award in 2010) and “Chevalier” (2015), returns to Venice competition with “Harvest.” Over seven hallucinatory days, a village with no name, in an undefined time and place, disappears.
In Tsangari’s tragicomic take on a Western, townsman-turned-farmer Walter Thirsk and befuddled lord of the manor Charles Kent are childhood friends about to face an invasion from the outside world: the trauma of modernity.

Metallica’s 1991 self-titled fifth LP, aka “The Black Album,” just spent its 750th week on the Billboard 200 chart, becoming only the fourth album in history to achieve that milestone.
Billboard reports that “The Black Album” only trails Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon (990 weeks), Bob Marley’s best-of compilation Legend (843 weeks), and Journey’s Greatest Hits (813 weeks) as far as the most non-consecutive weeks spent on the all-genre album chart.

From Inside Out 2 To The Fall Guy, Here Are The Box Office Winners & Losers Of 2024(Photo Credit –YouTube)
This summer has shown us too many sequels, and while some of them have done incredibly well at the box office, others weren’t much celebrated in 2024. Despite ticket sales mounting for every blockbuster release, some sequels should have skipped theatres altogether, yes, we’re talking about the Mad Max franchise’s latest release, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. As much as fans expected the movie would live up to the earlier instalments, this chapter faced a treacherous road of failure. And yet, some films managed to pack in crowds, like Dune: Part Two, which performed well at the box office. As we wait for more sequels and new movies for the remaining 2024, let’s explore the winners and losers of 2024 at the box office till now.

There hasn’t been a lot to celebrate at the box office in 2024. Ticket sales have languished. There’s been a dearth of blockbusters. And a few movies that bucked the odds to actually debut in the first half-of-the year probably should have skipped theaters altogether. We’re looking at you, “Argylle.”
And yet, some films still managed to pack in crowds. “Dune: Part Two” and “Inside Out 2” performed like major studio movies of yore, while IFC’s “Late Night With the Devil” proved that there’s still life in the indie business. There were also redemption stories. Will Smith restored the luster on his tarnished star with another “Bad Boys,” and “Garfield,” whose love affair with lasagna dates back to 1976, proved that some kitties have nine lives.
Here’s a look at what scored and stumbled as 2024 reaches its mid-point.

Exclusive: The West Wing actor Joshua Malina will make his London stage bow in the fall playing a “secular, sarcastic, anti-religious Jew” who says “the unsayable” about Israel in what’s being billed as the European premiere of Nathan Englander’s adaptation of his 2012 short story What We Talk About When We Talk About Anne Frank.
“It’s quite exciting to have Malina making his English debut,” said the show’s director, Patrick Marber.
Described by Marber as a “serious comedy with seriously funny jokes, but its purpose is serious,” the show will run October 4-November 23 at the Marylebone Theatre in London.
Marber and his producers Oliver King, Nina Tassler, David Daniels and Craig Dorfman are hoping to transfer into the West End after its run at the Marylebone.
And, they’re eager for the production to have “more life” after London.
“Off Broadway, Broadway subsidized — doesn’t matter,” Marber pleaded.

While he may be best known for features such as “The King of Scotland” and “The Mauritanian,” Kevin Macdonald has directed a number of documentaries about well-known figures, including 2012’s Bob Marley doc “Marley,” 2018’s revelatory “Whitney” about Whitney Houston and last year’s “High & Low: John Galliano.” His latest film, “Klitschko: More Than a Fight” — which opens the 2024 Sheffield Doc/Fest on Wednesday (and lands on Sky Documentaries in August) — is a little different.
At its center is Vitali Klitschko, the Ukrainian heavyweight boxing legend who, alongside his brother Wladimir, dominated the sport for a decade starting in the mid-2000s. But unlike Macdonald’s other documentaries, “More Than a Fight” follows its subject in the present day and in an entirely different role, as mayor of Kyiv, the capital city at the epicenter of the deadly ongoing war with Russia. On Wednesday, Alexander Wang celebrated his “no season” fashion show in New York City. The American fashion designer went classic Wang as he commemorates nearly 20 years of style. The presentation featured a “car crash” involving a full-size vehicle cut in half inside his SoHo store.
No fashion show would be complete without celebrity guests. Kim Cattrall, Method Man, Tinashe, Selah Marley, and Alabama Barker attended. But Ice Spice stole the show with her sizzling look.

The “Boys a liar Pt. 2” rapper posed underneath the car before the show. Just like Ice Spice, Wang’s collection was edgy, sexy, and revealing. Its leather pieces were studded, and its denim was low-rise. Wang added oversized shirts, tracksuits, and bomber jackets to create iconic street styles.

We are living in a time when Hollywood is actually making a lot of musical biopics, so it does not surprise us that one of the biggest musical artists of all time, Michael Jackson, will also be the center of an upcoming biopic. Lionsgate has acquired the rights to his story, and the upcoming film Michael is currently set for an April 18, 2025 release. The movie is a gamble due to Jackson being a controversial figure, but from what we can deduce, the executives at Lionsgate have a lot of confidence in the project.
Jim Packer, president of worldwide television distribution at Lionsgate, recently talked to the media and revealed his enthusiasm over the upcoming film, claiming that it will be Lionsgate’s biggest project of all time!
Packer told the media about his confidence in the movie, going as far as to claim that it is the studio’s biggest project ever.

From Whitney Houston to Elvis, there is no shortage of iconic singers who inspire sweeping films that dramatize their life stories. No matter the genre, cinematic features have captured the careers of the King of Rock and Roll Elvis Presley to country singer Jonny Cash. Most recently, Back to Black (2024) launched in theaters to capture the life and musical career of Amy Winehouse.
Still other films in the works will add to the canon of singer biography movies, like Timothée Chalamet’s upcoming portrayal of Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown and nephew to Jaafar Jackson’s portrayal of his uncle the late Michael Jackson in Michael.
We’ve compiled a list of music-centric biopics available to stream should the urge overcome viewers.

The short, tragic life of Amy Winehouse has been chronicled in a documentary (Asif Kapadia’s Amy), numerous unofficial biographies, memoirs by her father (Amy, My Daughter), her mother (Loving Amy: A Mother’s Story), close friend Tyler James (My Amy: The Life We Shared), podcasts, and even graphic novels. And in the wake of shockingly successful biopics about Queen, Elton John, Mötley Crüe, Aretha Franklin, Elvis Presley, and Bob Marley, the only surprising thing about Sam Taylor-Johnson’s Back to Black, which stars Marisa Abela as Winehouse, is that...

Amy Jade Winehouse could have been any young woman growing up in 1990s London — palling around with her mates, sneaking lagers, shagging dudes, getting into trouble, getting her nose pierced, and getting expelled from drama school for it. (That, and a few other reasons.) Until she opened her mouth, at which point she seemingly became possessed by a 1940s jazz chanteuse channeling centuries-old lust and sorrow. Winehouse went from a kid with a bluesy, contralto wail that almost felt like a parlor trick, considering that it was coming from a tiny white teen from Southgate,...

The past year saw a glut of biopics, and there are many more to come.
On the horizon are movies about Bob Dylan (A Complete Unknown with Timothee Chalamet), Michael Jackson (Michael with Jaafar Jackson), Shirley Chisolm (Shirley with Regina King), and many others.
Biographical pictures can be a vehicle to introduce a star from the past to the younger set, a la Elvis and then Priscilla. Or to bring a lesser-known historical figure like Oppenheimer to the forefront of our consciousness.
Other times, rather than being educational, a biopic can sensationalize a tragedy or scandal, which could leave a bad taste in the mouths of fans. This was the case with the Tommy Lee and Pamela Anderson miniseries.
Biopics are not a new genre for Hollywood. They are part of the ebb and flow of popularity. The vehicle is always around, sometimes as a small interest piece and, every now and then,...

Bruce Springsteen, “The Boss,” is one of the best rock singers in history. A pioneer of rock music, Springsteen has contributed to several subgenres of rock, with his music and his lyrics portraying the life and troubles of the “common people” in the United States. And while his music is undoubtedly majestic, his lyrics generally had a social note that made him stand out among the tough competition in the rock music market. Now, when Hollywood is actually making a lot of musical biopics, the time has come to make a film about Bruce Springsteen as well, and we already have some interesting casting updates.
The movie is going to be titled Deliver Me From Nowhere and will actually focus on the process of making Springsteen’s 1982 album Nebraska, which means that it will portray both the musician and his longtime manager, Jon Landau.

Louis Leterrier may be gearing up for Fast 11, but he still has other projects ready to go. The key one right now is sci-fi horror flick 11817, which is expected to begin filming this summer. As such, we have received some casting news, with Kingsley Ben-Adir and Greta Lee lined up for unspecified roles.
No other cast has been announced at this time for 11817 but kicking it off with the likes of Kingsley Ben-Adir and Greta Lee does add some serious talent to the project. Ben-Adir has really made his mark over the past few years, playing Malcolm X and Bob Marley to much praise. Lee, meanwhile, co-led Best Picture nominee Past Lives (and probably deserved an Oscar nod herself) and has Tron: Ares set up.
