Nicolas Cage comes from one of film’s most esteemed families. His uncle is Francis Ford Coppola (“The Godfather”) and his aunt is actress Talia Shire. Not wanting to appear like his career was the productive of nepotism, when he started acting he took the name Cage from one of his favorite comic book characters, Marvel’s Luke Cage.
Cage’s film career started off quite auspiciously with a small role in the popular comedy “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” when he was just 18 years old. He followed that up with a lead role in the cult classic “Valley Girl.” Both films interestingly dealt with the life of teenagers in the Los Angeles suburbs of the San Fernando Valley.
For his third film Cage would finally agree to work with his uncle when he appeared in Coppola’s “Rumble Fish,” followed the following year by Coppola’s “The Cotton Club.

The former Misfits and Utopia star loves pushing boundaries. But, as a drag queen out for revenge, in his new erotic thriller he’s ventured into truly novel territory
Nathan Stewart-Jarrett loves an erotic thriller. “The Bedroom Window with Elizabeth McGovern. Body Heat with Kathleen Turner. The Last Seduction … I mean, basically, I love all of those movies,” he says.
The reason we are talking about erotic thrillers is that this is how I have just described Femme, an electrifying two-hander starring Stewart-Jarrett as Jules, a drag queen who is beaten up by a gang of homophobic young men. His life derailed by the attack, Jules withdraws into himself, until a chance encounter at a gay sauna reveals two useful pieces of information: first, that Preston, the gang’s ringleader, is himself gay, and second, that Preston hasn’t recognised his former victim out of drag. Jules realises he has...

Gorgeous, infamous and woefully misrepresented, Ava Gardner is one of numerous Old Hollywood actresses who is being reevaluated by audiences today. She’s also seeing her story told onstage in “Ava: The Secret Conversations,” playing at the Geffen Playhouse through May 14.
Actress Elizabeth McGovern, of “Downton Abbey” fame, and director Moritz von Stuelpnagel adapt Peter Evans’ book of the same name for the production, which charts the last years of Gardner’s life.
McGovern pulls double duty as leading lady and writer of the play’s script. She came to Gardner’s work through Evans’ book, primarily. “The starting point was the seduction of this idea of a biographer attempting to get a life story out of a recalcitrant or ambivalent subject and all the things that brings up about the nature of biography, about the nature of how we look at our own lives and what they add up to at the very end,...

Billy Crystal has delighted When Harry Met Sally fans by recreating a scene from the hit Eighties film.
The comedian starred opposite Meg Ryan in Nora Ephron’s 1989 romcom, which is widely considered to be one of the greatest of the genre.
Marking his 75th birthday on Tuesday (14 March), Crystal thanked fans for their well-wishes, while treating them to a throwback from the film.
In the photo, Crystal is shown crouching on the floor in a cream fisherman’s jumper, navy jeans and white trainers.
Crystal posted the picture next to a still of him wearing the same outfit and same position in the original film, captioning the post: “Thank you all.”
The tweet caught the eye of the Merriam-Webster dictionary’s account, which replied: “Icon | noun | a person or thing widely admired especially for having great influence or significance in a particular sweater.”

It may be this year’s ‘comfort food’ film but Julian Fellowes’ second theatrical sequel to his revered long-running TV show is quality goods — and may be better than the first one. Almost every actor is back, seemingly pleased as plum puddings to repeat their roles as either landed nobility or downstairs staff. The storyline ties a final bow on some characters and plot lines, and in a far more pleasing way than we thought possible. Even casual fans of the franchise ought to be charmed.

Downton Abbey has had a long and exciting run.
We had six seasons of, holiday-themed specials, and two movies.
Hugh Bonneville, who has been with the franchise since the beginning, thinks the franchise could be over after the latest movie.
“I suspect, if there is [a new series], it would be a reboot. An origin story or something like that,” the star said to The Hollywood Reporter of rumors of a TV comeback.
The star said that Bridgerton highlighted that "there's clearly an appetite for these sorts of shows."

Bonneville went on to state that it is "immensely unlikely" the original cast would return for future projects.

Between the sheer amount of near-scandals, committee disagreements, and countless strifes over who deserves whose inheritance, there's hardly a dull day at "Downton Abbey" when you're a member of the Crawley family. If there's one constant you can always find within the series, it's the aristocratic family desperately trying to hold onto the estate, while the constant evolution of the outside world signals their way of doing things is slowly on its way out.

Another week, another box-office lesson. While the Memorial Day session reminded us that there are still such things as old-school Hollywood movie stars—the kind whose name on a marquee can single-handedly open a movie—thanks to the blockbuster debut of Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick, this week we were given a refresher course in the power of positive word of mouth. Cruise’s buzzy sequel just kept soaring at the multiplex with a negligible drop off, taking in another 86 million at North American theaters. It’s especially newsworthy since the smash-hit sequel is one of the few recent out-of-the-gate moneymakers without no connection to either superheroes or comic-book I.P. Meanwhile, another eagerly awaited tentpole follow-up, Jurassic World Dominion, was met by dino-sized returns in its early overseas roll out.

After 36 years, Tom Cruise’s daredevil Navy flyboy Pete Mitchell apparently still felt the need…the need for speed. And so, too, did nostalgic moviegoers who flooded the nation’s multiplexes over Memorial Day weekend to propel the star’s long-delayed sequel, Top Gun: Maverick, into the box-office stratosphere with a 124 million domestic haul between Friday and Sunday. When Monday’s receipts are factored in, look for that total to climb to 151 million—making the Paramount sequel the strongest debut of Cruise’s storied career by far. Meanwhile, 20th Century Studios’ The Bob’s Burgers Movie bowed over the holiday frame in third place with 12.6 million.
Originally slated to open in the summer of 2020, Top Gun: Maverick was always a big bet for the studio. Not just because of its sky-high 170 million price tag, but also because it was gambling on an aging audience’s memories of a film that hit...

Even the strange sight of the lock-jawed Crawley clan frolicking on the French Riviera proved to be no match for the three-week-old Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness over the weekend as Downton Abbey: A New Era failed to unseat Marvel’s latest hand-over-fist blockbuster from the top spot in the battle of fan-service sequels. Landing slightly below expectations, Downton 2 debuted in the runner-up spot with a so-so 16 million while Benedict Cumberbatch’s superhero follow-up held onto first place for the third straight frame with a 31.6 million haul. Meanwhile, A24’s psychological horror film, Men, baffled audiences and bowed quietly in fifth place.
Proving that the third weekend can still be the charm, Disney’s Doctor Strange 2 continued to dominate multiplexes, grossing 31.6 million in North America—a dip of -48.8 from the previous session. The latest installment in the MCU scored a 6,969 per-screen average in 4,534 theaters, bringing its three-week domestic box-office total to 342.1 million.

Box Office: ‘Downton Abbey 2’ Starts Strong With 16 Million as ‘Doctor Strange’ Reigns Supreme Again
The Crawley family still has the royal touch at the box office. “Downton Abbey: A New Era,” a sequel to the big-screen continuation of the beloved British television show, captured 16 million from 3,815 North American theaters in its domestic debut. Though down slightly from initial projections, those returns mark an encouraging start at a time when older audiences have been selective about going to the movies.
There had been understandable concern about the second “Downton Abbey” in terms of commercial prospects, and not because long-time fans of the series had tired of devouring the onscreen palace intrigue and class-system drama. Other than “House of Gucci” and James Bond sequel “No Time to Die,” many pandemic-era films catering to adults (such as Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story” remake” and the Will Smith sports drama “King Richard”) struggled to sell tickets despite positive reviews. So it’s no small feat that nearly...

The “Doctor” is still in, as Marvel’s latest film continues to lead the box office against some very proper competition.
“Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” added another 8.5 million to its box office total on Friday, bumping its cumulative gross up to 318 million. Meanwhile, “Downton Abbey: A New Era” is estimated to end the weekend with 18 million.
“Downton Abbey: A New Era,” the second film spin-off of the beloved U.K. series, raked in a solid 1 million in previews on Thursday from 3,300 theaters. But its weekend estimates won’t be enough to dethrone “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” which is looking to top the domestic box office charts for a third weekend. Alex Garland’s horror film “Men” also opens this weekend, but looks to have a soft start with only 1,411,853 from 1,800 screens on Friday.
The first “Downton Abbey” film, released in 2019, grossed more than 190 million at the global box office.

In this second film based from the TV series, the new era has begun, as the Crawleys have found that Countess Violet, Aka Granny (Maggie Smith) has inherited a French villa through mysterious circumstances. At the same time, a film crew arrives at Downton, to shoot a silent film that halfway through production has to convert to a talkie, aided by Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery). Highly anticipated Downton Abbey: A New Era made 1.050 million in Thursday previews that began at 7 p.m. at more than 3,300 theaters. It is Focus Features’ widest ever U.S. release and one that comes with a weight of responsibility as the film to finally catapult older demos back into theaters. Focus Features distribution chief Lisa Bunnell recently promised cinema owners it would. “We have our own superheroes,” she said at CinemaCon.
Based on the smash series created by Julian Fellowes, it’s grossed over 30 million internationally. It premiered in the U.K. and Ireland April 29, launching into the top spot across 746 locations (second-widest release after No Time To Die). “Downton Abbey: A New Era,” the follow-up to the 2019 feature film and the latest in the story of the aristocratic Crawley family established in the hit series, earned 1.05 million in its Thursday box office previews from 3,300 screens. “A New Era” opens on 3,815 screens this weekend, which is the widest opening for a Focus Features film in the specialty distributor’s history.
There are high hopes that “Downton Abbey: A New Era” will be the film that can attract older audiences back to movie theaters in earnest for the first time since the pandemic began, and by grossing over 30 million thus far internationally, including strong showings in the UK and Ireland, those hopes may yet be realized.

The beloved drama series “Downton Abbey” now has a second feature film (“Downton Abbey: A New Era”) ready to rake in a fortune. It’s been over a decade since it burst upon the television scene, so we’ve recently revisited the wonderful world of the British historical drama to rank the greatest 25 episodes in the photo gallery above. It’s true that this series is a melodrama, perhaps even a glorified soap opera. But its central theme is change, and how real-life historic events, as well as personal joys and crises, affect the fictional aristocratic Crawley family and their servants in England during the pivotal years 1912-1926.
The six seasons of “Downton” begins with the sinking of the “Titanic” in April of 1912, and the impact it has on the Crawley family, who has presided over the estate for generations. Several stories swirl at once, with dramas surrounding both the...

This review of “Downton Abbey: A New Era” was first published April 25, 2022.
The first “Downton Abbey” film, released in 2019, was an all-subplots-no-plot affair in which the most troubling dramatic question was who would peel the potatoes when the King and Queen came to dinner. It must have been difficult to make a sequel that was even more trivial, and yet the team behind “Downton Abbey: A New Era” has managed it.
Written once again by Julian Fellowes, the creator of the escapist toffs-and-staff television series, the film opens with a wedding and goes on to feature a death, a birth and a proposal (not in that order), and yet it leaves the impression that nothing whatsoever has happened.
The film hops back and forth between two storylines, if that’s not stretching the definition of “storyline.” In one of these, the aged Dowager Countess (Maggie Smith) announces that she has...

On Friday, Focus Features releases “Downton Abbey: A New Era,” the sequel to its 2019 hit, which itself was a continuation of the popular Emmy-winning PBS series created by Julian Fellowes, the Oscar-winning writer of 2001’s “Gosford Park.”
Fellowes’ original series about a well-to-do British family in the early 1920s starred Hugh Bonneville, Elizabeth McGovern, Michelle Dockery, Dan Stevens and Dame Maggie Smith, running from 2010 through 2015 for six seasons. The 2019 movie continued the story with a visit to Downton from the King and Queen, and it was a pretty major release for Focus, opening with 31 million in 3,079 theaters and sticking around through the fall. It would gross 96 million just in North America,...
