Learn some modern dance moves from Emmy and Tony-winner John Lithgow? Sure! The actor stopped by our suite at the Television Critics Association press tour and shared some of the artistic skills he honed while shooting the delightful PBS one-hour special Art Happens Here. In it, Lithgow joins students and teachers at four Los Angeles organizations to learn dance, ceramics, silk-screen printing and vocal jazz ensemble. (Watch the video above to see the entire interview.) “As a kid, I had some wonderful art training in public high schools and I decided as a way of advocating and highlighting the importance of arts and education, I would go back to school in four different settings and hurl myself into four different and distinct art activities,” says Lithgow who works alongside and learns from young people whose lives are being transformed by art. You just can't keep those damn dirty apes down. 10 years after Tim Burton's 2001 "Planet of the Apes" re-imagining failed to reignite audiences' passion for stories about intellectually-enhanced simians, the long-running sci-fi franchise made an unexpectedly strong comeback with "Rise of the Planet of the Apes." Director Rupert Wyatt's entry in the series is now generally considered the weakest of the modern "Apes" trilogy, which is more of a testament to what Matt Reeves was able to accomplish with his subsequent sequels than necessarily a knock against Wyatt's film. "Rise" itself makes for an effective cautionary tale about humanity's hubris, our lack of compassion toward other living beings, and our habit of being our own worst enemy, as seen through the eyes of its co-protagonist, Caesar (Andy Serkis in his touchstone motion-capture role).
Yes, it's easy to forget that Caesar wasn't originally the singular lead of his own story.

Kevin Bacon Returns To ‘Footloose’ High School On Film’s 40th Anniversary Following Student Campaign
It’s been 40 years since Footloose was released, and Kevin Bacon returned to the high school where the musical drama was filmed.
“Go Lions! Here we are on this beautiful, beautiful spot on this beautiful, beautiful day,” Bacon said, according to ABC4. “It’s been a long time – 40 years – that just blows my mind, you know. Things look a little different around here. I’d say the thing that looks the most different is me.”
Payson High School in Utah was one of the film locations of Footloose, and Bacon made an appearance on Saturday after the students campaigned for the actor to attend their prom.
“You were all just tireless. Unrelenting … You talked me into it,” Bacon said. “I think it’s great to see that kind of commitment to anything. I also think that it’s amazing the power that this movie has had to just kind of bring people together,...

Two years ago, Joseph Gordon-Levitt revealed that his former 3rd Rock From the Sun co-star John Lithgow had a real gift for getting everyone into panic mode on April Fool’s Day. Appearing on The Kelly Clarkson Show, the actor recalled when Lithgow had Gordon-Levitt’s mother convinced the prince of England was coming to the set of the show for a visit, and she went all-out to prepare. That turned out to be a prank, and she retaliated by putting a gaggle of crickets in his dressing room. As it turns out, that wasn’t even the best fake-out Lithgow pulled on the set of the hit ’90s sitcom about a group of aliens living a middle-class life on Earth. Lithgow was a guest on The Kelly Clarkson Show Friday, promoting his new PBS special, Art Happens Here, and he looked back on that incident and revealed another that...

Kevin Bacon, dancing away, in 4K? Footloose is coming to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray in the UK, it’s been confirmed.
Paramount Pictures is wasting little time sorting new catalogue releases for the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format in 2024, with the news that the 1980s hit Footloose is heading to the format.
Already confirmed in America, a UK release has now been earmarked for February 12th 2024, and the film has gone up for order now. You can find it here.
Initially, it’s only available as a Steelbook release, although it’s expected that a regular 4K disc package isn’t far away. It’s the original film, incidentally, that’s getting the release, and not the remake.
Update: The regular, cheaper release is now confirmed for 13th May 2024. You can find it here.
Kevin Bacon, Lori Singer, Dianne Wiest and John Lithgow thus take the lead roles here, with Herbert Ross behind the camera.

With 2023’s compelling Jake Gyllenhaal vehicle The Covenant, Guy Ritchie took a more serious dramatic turn, away from the flashy action, glib humor and mashup of period settings with contemporary attitude that had characterized many of his biggest commercial successes. With its typically Ritchie-esque ensemble of quippy rascals, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare sees the director back on more customary territory. Sort of. Chronicling a covert World War II mission manned by a band of renegades, the movie is diverting but remains awkwardly stuck between a larkish caper and a more gripping combat action thriller.
Scripted by Paul Tamasy, Eric Johnson, Arash Amel and Ritchie, based on the nonfiction book by war specialist Damien Lewis, the remarkable story comes from British War Department documents dating back to Winston Churchill’s first term in office, which were declassified in 2016.

Robert Eggers’ upcoming remake of F.W. Murnau’s silent classic Nosferatu is one of the more highly anticipated horror movies of the year, and the lucky folks at CinemaCon got a look at an exclusive first look at the chilling production.
The first look at Nosferatu was suitably terrifying with a heavy gothic tone. Classic-looking tall, dark castles, scurrying rats, blood gushing from necks, and full-on bleak horror. The footage included looks at Lily-Rose Depp (The Idol) and Willem Dafoe (Poor Things) but sadly only featured quick glimpses of Count Orlock himself. Perhaps that’s for the best, but I can’t wait to see Bill Skarsgard (Boy Kills World) disappear into the character.

Edward Berger’s last film, “All Quiet on the Western Front,” won four Academy Awards — including Best International Feature Film — for Netflix. The director’s new epic, “Conclave,” which is set up at Focus Features, may just best that tally.
Attendees at the 2024 CinemaCon convention in Las Vegas got a look at first footage from the film during the Universal Pictures and Focus Features presentation on Wednesday, April 10. A papal thriller starring Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow, and Isabella Rossellini, “Conclave” is no doubt an Oscar hopeful for Focus given its November 2024 release date. Having seen the trailer only reinforces the awards play. Give the devil its due: “Conclave” looks good.
When the pope dies, “Conclave” scrambles to find God’s new messenger on Earth. The search turns into a holy war that is anything but holy. Focus Features chairman Peter Kujawski described the film as a “Machiavellian thriller.

When David Boreanaz read for FBI agent Seeley Booth in the "Bones" pilot, he instantly thought of "Harry and the Hendersons." It's not hard to see why. The character's relationship with his then newfound partner, the forensic anthropologist Dr. Temperance "Bones" Brennan (Emily Deschanel), readily evokes that between the open-hearted Bigfoot Harry and John Lithgow's uptight, disapproving patriarch George Henderson Jr. in William Dear's Oscar-winning 1987 fantasy comedy film. Much like Harry and George, however, Bones gradually opens up to Booth in spite of his shenanigans and even bids him a teary farewell when he rejoins his fellow federal investigators living in the wilderness.
Alright, alright, fine, Boreanaz actually thought of "Romancing the Stone." Even in the pilot, long before they became a romantic item, Booth and Bones' repartee recalled Robert Zemeckis' 1984 hit action-rom-com, itself a throwback to Golden Age Hollywood screwball comedy and action-adventure classics like "It Happened One Night" and "The African Queen,...

After 8 Years, Ben Affleck’s Thriller Regains Popularity On Netflix. (Photo Credit – IMDb)
After eight long years since its triumphant reign in cinemas, the mighty saga of Ben Affleck’s action-thriller, “The Accountant,” rises again, casting its shadow upon Netflix. Yet, it found itself trailing behind the recent Netflix epics, including the enchanted “Irish Wish” of Lindsay Lohan and the captivating “Damsel” of Millie Bobby Brown, each reigning supreme for three and four weeks, respectively.
Theatrically released back in 2016, the electrifying action-thriller introduces Ben Affleck as the enigmatic Christian Wolff, a maestro of mathematics and a certified accountant with a knack for straightening out financial chaos in the shadowy realms of crime. Lorne Michaels is an expert at celebrating the legacy of “Saturday Night Live.” The show’s creator has produced variety specials for the NBC program’s 15th anniversary, 25th anniversary and 40th anniversary, so the upcoming 50th season should have a highly entertaining spectacle. Nothing less than a three-hour event would be expected, but how else should “SNL” celebrate the golden anniversary season, which would begin in the autumn of 2024 and continue through May, 2025?
Here is our exciting, fun suggestion for a way to go above and beyond for the live special. Over the course of a 20-22 episode season, NBC would certainly have almost every episode featuring the current cast along with hot guest hosts and musical guests. However, for the other five episodes spread out over several months, devote an entire 90 minutes to each previous decade. Invite back the biggest cast members from a decade along with well-known guest hosts and music stars.

Christopher Durang, one of American’s most acclaimed and accomplished playwrights whose works like Beyond Therapy, Sister Mary Ignatius Explains It All For You and the Tony-winning Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike were as incisive as they were absurdly comic, died Tuesday night at his home in Pipersville, Pa., in Bucks County. He was 75.
His agent, Patrick Herold, confirmed that Durang died as a result complications of his 2016 diagnosis with logopenic primary progressive aphasia (Ppa), a form of Alzheimer’s disease that impedes the ability to process language. The "Twilight Zone" episode "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet", directed by Richard Donner, remains to this day one of the show's most popular. Scripted by Richard Matheson and starring a pre-"Star Trek" William Shatner, "Nightmare" follows a man, Robert Wilson, recently released from a sanitarium due to a mental breakdown. On a flight back home, Robert peers out the plane window into the rainy night and sees a massive, furry gremlin standing on the wing of the plane. The gremlin, in true gremlin spirit, pries up a metal panel on the wing and begins futzing with the machinery inside. The gremlin might very well cause the plane to crash. When Robert tries to alert anyone about the gremlin, they all assume he's imagining it, once again succumbing to his nerves.
Matheson first conceived of "Nightmare" in a 1961 short story, published in his anthology "Alone By Night." The story has become...

The Oscar winner was a trailblazer who was happy to share the spotlight – and part of a disappearing class of Black acting nobility
Preparation went out the window when Louis Gossett Jr became the third Black person to win an Oscar, in 1983, for his supporting role in An Officer and a Gentleman. He had planned to accept the award with his seven-year-old son, Satie – but the boy got stage fright at the last minute and stayed rooted to his seat. The speech Gossett had in mind? “It’s no use,” he told the capacity crowd at LA’s Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. “It’s all gone.” So he kept things short and sweet, thanking his family before pivoting to his fellow nominees – a tough crowd that included James Mason and John Lithgow. “All you other four guys,” Gossett said, raising his statuette, “this is ours.”
That was Gossett in essence: magnanimous,...

Sylvester Stallone is certainly one of the biggest names in the history of Hollywood, as he was truly the king when it came to action and drama in the 70s and 80s. After all, his roles in classics such as Rocky, Rambo, and more, solidified his legacy as an all-time great.
Sylvester Stallone in Rocky
With that said, Stallone named just one role that didn’t show him as impaired or dangerous in one of his lesser-known movies. This might also come as a surprise for many fans in general who have followed him over the years.

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com audio film review for “Cabrini,” the origin story of the first American canonized saint, Mother Cabrini, directed by Alejandro Monteverde of “Sound of Freedom.” Currently in theaters see local listings.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
Christina Dell’Anna is Mother Cabrini, an Italian nun whose life mission is to build orphanages around the world. When she goes to Pope Leo (Giancarlo Giannini) to plead to do this in Asia, the Pope instead sends her to New York City America, where the notorious Five Points neighborhood is crowded by the influx of Italian immigrants in need. She goes to work building an orphanage and hospital, much to the chagrin of Archbishop Corrigan (David Morse) and New York’s Mayor Gould (John Lithgow). Some of their dread is bureaucratic and most has to do with the headstrong female in a man’s world. Can Mother Cabrini make a difference?

This year’s Tonys will be held on June 16, so the American Theatre Wing will likely be announcing its Lifetime Achievement Award recipient in the near future. In Hollywood, casting decisions can make or break a movie. Sometimes, the biggest roles almost end up in different hands, which changes the story. Take Ghostbusters, for example, the classic film with the guys chasing ghosts. Well, imagine if Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts were carrying those proton packs! Alongside them, crazy, right?
A still from Ghostbusters (1984)
We all know the Ghostbusters crew, isn’t that so? However, they might have looked totally different. Back in ’84, Ivan Reitman dropped this flick about a ghost-catching scientist in New York City, and it blew up. Fans and critics couldn’t get enough of it. Then, in 1989, a sequel was released, but it did not quite hit the same high notes.
Attempts to make a third Ghostbusters film persevered for quite a while, yet hit a roadblock with Harold Ramis’ passing in 2014. Paul Feig’s 2016 reboot of the franchise featured an all-female team with nods to the originals.

Kevin Bacon is going back to the school where Footloose was filmed.
The iconic movie, which celebrates the 40th anniversary of its release this year, was filmed in Payson, Utah. For those few unfamiliar with it, Bacon plays Ren McCormack, a teenager from Chicago who moves to a small town. There he attempts to overturn a ban on dancing imposed by a local minister (John Lithgow).
Payson’s students have been lobbying Bacon to attend this year’s prom, which will be the last there as the school will be relocating at the end of the academic year.
The effort has paid off, and Bacon will visit during the day of the prom, although he won’t be cutting the rug that night at the actual event.
Bacon announced his plans by calling in from Atlanta while students filled the school gym. The gym erupted in cheers.

Seven years ago, Donald Glover won his first two Emmys, Best Comedy Actor and Best Comedy Directing for “Atlanta.” While he missed out on nominations last year for the final season of his FX series — he did receive a writing bid for “Swarm” — Glover is back in the hunt this cycle with “Mr. & Mrs. Smith.” Inspired by the Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie film of the same name, the spy series is competing in drama, which means Glover could become just the second man and third person to win lead Emmys in comedy and drama.
Carroll O’Connor is thus far the only male performer to have achieved this, having pocketed a record-setting four Best Comedy Actor Emmys for “All in the Family” in 1972 and three in a row from 1977-79 before adding a Best Drama Actor statuette for “In the Heat of the Night” in 1989. Released back in 2016 and starring Ben Affleck, Anna Kendrick, J.K. Simmons, Jon Bernthal, Jeffrey Tambor, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, John Lithgow, and Jean Smart, The Accountant was a major hit for Affleck and director Gavin O’Connor. The movie successfully combined Affleck’s autistic accountant, Christian Wolff, with an action-filled storyline that had both fans and critics praising the movie. And while we’ve known that a sequel is in the works for some time now, Collider exclusively reports that the filming of The Accountant 2 is set to begin in Los Angeles next week.
This was confirmed by one of the movies’ main actors, J.K. Simmons, who sat down for an interview for Collider and said the following:
“Yeah, I head to LA in a little over a week to do some rehearsals and pre-production and start shooting my chunk of it. I’m not even sure, I think they start...

With the 2024 Oscars in the rearview mirror, it’s time to start looking toward 2025. It’s early, but not too early to start making predictions about what movies might contend for the Oscars next year.
The 97th Academy Awards may wind up dominated by an unusual number of blockbuster sequels to films that won big previously. There are also some period pieces, some comeback vehicles, and some movies that were featured on last year’s list that got held back for this year.
Here are 20 films to know for the 2025 Oscars. Some of them are locks, some of them are long shots, and all of them are worth keeping an eye on throughout 2024 as their Academy Awards chances rise and fall.
“A Real Pain”
One of three films on this list that have screened publicly as of publication time, road dramedy “A Real Pain” was the buzziest title out of Sundance this year.

2024 Oscar Snubs: Killers of the Flower Moon & Maestro ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
The 2024 Oscar saw Oppenheimer bag seven awards, including Best Director, Best Actor and Best Picture. Poor Things won four awards at the Academy this year. However, there were some big 2023 movies that either won just one or not even a single award. Like every year, we witnessed again how some movies, directors or actors’ work got completely unrecognised.
From Robert De Niro’s Killers of the Flower Moon to Bradley Cooper’s Maestro, many famous films were brutally ignored at the 2024 Oscar ceremony. We have listed several such movies that were nominated in different categories, but got snubbed by the Academy.

They say that conflict is the essence of drama, and in this handsome but impossibly somber biopic there is almost nothing but conflict. Following up last year’s surprise hit Sound of Freedom, director Alejandro Monteverde neatly sidesteps a repeat of that film’s controversy with a story that cannot remotely be interpreted as a QAnon allegory. Based on the true story of Frances Xavier Cabrini — literally the first American saint — this takes a most un-maga viewpoint on immigration, painting an unvarnished portrait of racism in a country that is supposed to embrace the tired and the poor.
Right from the start, Cabrini impresses with its set design, giving Martin Scorsese’s studio work a run for its money and taking place shortly after the latter’s atmospheric brace of 19th century movies The Age of Innocence and Gangs of New York. A title card informs us that between 1899 and...

Alejandro Monteverde, whose Sound Of Freedom was the top grossing independent film of 2023, is back in theaters this weekend with Cabrini, also from Angel Studios, in wide release. The true story of an indomitable Italian nun on a mission to aid immigrants living in misery and poverty in late 19th century New York City, stars Cristiana Dell’Anna as waif-like Francesca Cabrini. She navigates a Pope, an Archbishop, the mayor of New York and the Italian Senate among others to build a charitable empire starting with one orphanage in the immigrant slum called Five Points (last seen in Martin Scorsese’s Gangs of New York). Giancarlo Giannini plays Pope Leo; David Morse is Archbishop Michael Augustine Corrigan; and John Lithgow a villainous Mayor Gould — men Cabrini lectured, sparred with, cajoled and threatened to realize her life’s work. Canonized in 1946, she is the Patron Saint of Immigrants.

Alejandro Monteverde’s last movie, the wildly profitable Christian thriller “Sound of Freedom,” was dogged by accusations that its anti-trafficking hero was himself guilty of fraud and grooming — a tough break for a piece of conspiracy-driven Maga theology that purported to shine a light on the secret cabal of sex criminals who are hiding in plain sight. Monteverde presumably had no way of knowing that Tim Ballard would become the target of a criminal investigation and get ousted from the very organization that “Sound of Freedom” exists to valorize, but his follow-up feature — shot in 2021 — seems designed to avoid any hint of a similar controversy.

Lori Singer made her breakthrough role as Ariel Moore in the 1984 musical film Footloose. A young Kevin Bacon also turned in a star-making performance in the film. The film was the decade-defining musical of the 80s with its foot-tapping dance numbers and amazing soundtrack still etched into people’s minds.

The film has stood the test of time and continues to be celebrated to this day. Singer recently reflected on the relevance of the film and her experience making the film. Singer committed herself to some daredevil stunts and even got slapped on her face during an intense scene.

To quote a famous lyric from the musical Hamilton, immigrants get the job done. That message seems to be getting lost in the current wave of anti-immigrant sentiment sweeping the nation, if not the world. But it receives a timely reminder in Cabrini, the new drama about Francesca Cabrini, the Catholic missionary who arrived on our shores in 1889 and eventually established enough schools, orphanages and hospitals to form a veritable charitable empire. She became the first U.S. citizen to be canonized, in 1946, 29 years after her death. (And she’s apparently still performing miracles to this day, since she’s billed as one of the film’s executive producers.)
The film arrives courtesy of Angel Studios and director Alejandro Monteverde, both responsible for last year’s surprise, controversial smash hit about child sex trafficking, Sound of Freedom. This effort will likely prove far less divisive, if also less commercial. An old-fashioned,...

A lot of really fun movies from the eighties and nineties are tough to get decent copies of. While some of the stories have happy endings, other films seem all but doomed to languish until a niche label like Arrow Video, Kino Lorber, or Unearthed Films gives them the TLC they deserve. So, what’s the title we’re worried is Gone Forever here at JoBlo? A cool little thriller (which I previously wrote up for Best Movie You Never Saw) from 1991 called Ricochet has a pretty impressive pedigree. The movie stars Denzel Washington, John Lithgow, Ice-t, Kevin Pollack and The Bionic Woman herself, Lindsay Wagner, while Highlander’s Russell Mulcahy directs it, is produced by Joel Silver, and is written by Die Hard’s Steven E De Souza. In fact, Ricochet takes place in the same universe as Die Hard, with Mary Ellen Trainor reprising her role as snoopy TV reporter Gale Wallens.
