Warner Bros. gave the CineEurope trade show a healthy assortment of big name exclusives in its presentation on Tuesday.
Arguably chief among them was the explosive new trailer for “Joker: Folie à Deux,” Todd Phillips’ sequel to his billion-dollar-topping 2019 smash hit, which the audience in Barcelona got the very first taste of in the build up to the film’s release in October. The first trailer — which debuted at CinemaCon in April — racked up 167 million views in its first 24 hours. Warner Bros. didn’t reveal when the new trailer would be released publicly.
Phillips was among a who’s who of major names the studio had called upon to record special messages for CineEurope. Other included Jack Black, speaking from the set of the “Minecraft” movie, James Gunn, David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan as they took a break from filming DC’s “Superman” reboot, Ewan McGregor and Anne Hathaway from the set of “Flowervale Street,...

Warner Bros brought twin tornadoes to CineEurope today, showing off an extended new look at the Daisy Edgar-Jones/Glen Powell starrer Twisters which the studio is releasing internationally. From Lee Isaac Chung, the action thriller starts overseas rollout on July 17 and storms into domestic cinemas via Universal on July 19.
Bookending the Warner Bros presentation was a brand new trailer for Todd Phillips’ highly anticipated sequel, Joker: Folie à Deux, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga. We previously got a first look at the first trailer during April’s CinemaCon in Las Vegas. No word on when the one shown today in Barcelona will drop online. The film releases overseas on October 2 and domestically on October4.
Back at the top of the Warner presentation, President of International Theatrical Distribution Andrew Cripps reinforced the studio’s commitment to the big screen experience. “That’s still our business, plain and simple,” he said...

Ian McKellen was hospitalized after falling off stage during a performance of “Player Kings” at the Noël Coward Theatre on the West End in London, according to the BBC.
McKellen was reportedly in a battle scene when he lost his footing and fell. The audience was evacuated from the theater and the evening show was canceled. A representative for the theater shared a statement that McKellen will “make a speedy and full recovery” and that the 85-year-old actor is “in good spirits.”
“Thank you to our audience and the general public for their well wishes following Ian’s fall during this evening’s performance of ‘Player Kings,'” reads the statement. “Following a scan, the brilliant NHS team have assured us that he will make a speedy and full recovery and Ian is in good spirits. In a recent interview with British GQ, Oscar-winning actor Russell Crowe revealed the reason he decided not to be part of the The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Crowe was originally approached to play Aragorn, son of Arathorn, and even had a secret meeting with director Peter Jackson. Crowe recalled his conversation with Jackson candidly, saying, I very much felt the studio were making that decision, not the film director. The actor described how their conversation led him to sense that Jackson had someone else in mind for the role. I just kind of got a sense that he already...

Following up Wendell & Wild, animation wizard Henry Selick is planning to return to the world of Neil Gaiman with an adaptation of The Ocean at the End of the Lane. “Instead of a child going to this other world with a monstrous mother, it’s a monstrous mother who comes into our world to wreak havoc on a kid’s life,” Selick told Variety, contrasting the film with his previous Gaiman adaptation Coraline. Gaiman’s 2013 novel follows “an unnamed man who returns to his hometown for a funeral and remembers events that began forty years earlier.” Selick is currently shopping the project around, so hopefully we’ll have distribution news soon.

By this point, we all know how fortunate we are that we got to see Denis Villenueve's two-part adaptation of Frank Herbert's sci-fi novel "Dune" in its entirety. Warner Bros. clearly believed in Villenueve as a visionary by giving him a $160 million budget to adapt the first chunk of Herbert's book after the filmmaker's last movie for the studio, "Blade Runner 2049," severely underperformed commercially. The gamble itself wasn't on Villenueve. WB knew he could build massive worlds and tell a compelling story within them. It was on the material to sell itself. Was a nuanced tale of political intrigue set on a desert planet of interest to mainstream audiences?

In an intriguing exploration of casting dynamics, Russell Crowe delved into his experiences with big studio movies in a recent interview with British GQ. Casting Considerations The most poignant revelation was Crowe’s decision to turn down the role of Aragorn in the iconic ‘Lord of the Rings’ trilogy. This choice was driven by a sense that renowned director Peter Jackson did not truly want him for the part. I very much felt the studio were making that decision, not the film director. And I talked to Peter Jackson over the phone, and he wasn’t saying the sort of things that...

Russell Crowe has been in a lot of big films. So many that he can sense when something fits, or not.
Case in point: the time Crowe was up for a major role in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy. He was solicited for the role of Aragorn, which eventually went to Viggo Mortensen.
In an interview with British GQ, Crowe talked about the delicate dance of casting.
Crowe, a big Tolkien fan, soon subtly discovered that director Jackson wasn’t keen on him as Aragorn.
“I very much felt the studio were making that (casting) decision, not the film director,” he said. “And I talked to Peter Jackson over the phone, and he wasn’t saying the sort of things that directors were saying to you if they were really trying to attract you to a project. Russell Crowe has no regrets when it comes to “The Lord of the Rings.” The Oscar-winning actor met director Peter Jackson to play the role of Aragorn in his film trilogy, but their conversation apparently turned off Crowe from wanting to move forward with the movies. Jackson’s “Rings” trilogy would go on to gross $2.9 billion worldwide and remains one of the most acclaimed film trilogies ever made. Still, Crowe knows it was the right call to let it pass.
“I don’t actually,” Crowe said during a British GQ video interview when asked if he has any “Rings” regrets. “I very much felt the studio were making that decision, not the film director. And I talked to Peter Jackson over the phone, and he wasn’t saying the sort of things that directors were saying to you if they were really trying to attract you to a project. And...

Russell Crowe has had a long career with few regrets. In fact, he says there is only really one in his professional life—a musical biopic he won’t name but that he turned down and it went on to be a hit (so begin your speculation now). Mostly while speaking to British GQ for this month’s cover story, however, Crowe expressed deep satisfaction with the onscreen side of his life, and even pushed back at assertions that he’s mostly remembered now for one role as a Roman general in Gladiator.
While talking at length about the many opportunities and setbacks he’s had in his life, Crowe notes he has folks still come up to him to talk about Bud White in L.A. Confidential, or John Nash in A Beautiful Mind. There’s even a certain species of movie nerd out there—which this writer pleads...

News of Peter Jackson and Andy Serkis’s eyebrow-raising return to Middle-earth seems to have passed the two stars by. Are Aragorn and Gandalf to be replaced?
Just how exactly did Peter Jackson and Andy Serkis’s shocking plan to return to Middle-earth with the forthcoming The Lord of The Rings: The Hunt for Gollum come about? Let us imagine the duo kicking back in Jackson’s Hobbity New Zealand pad with a good batch of Longbottom Leaf, several cases of miruvor wine recently delivered from Lothlórien, and plenty of seed cakes and cold chicken. Conspicuous by their absence from the party, however, unless something distinctly fishy is going on, are Viggo Mortensen and Ian McKellen. Because neither seems to have been so much as consulted about the new movie before it was announced to the public.
This is only strange if The Hunt for Gollum does turn out to...

Filmmaker Taika Waititi assumed the directorial reins of Chris Hemsworth’s Thor film series with its third installment, Thor: Ragnarok. And while working on the movie, he surprised many by doing something unconventional for a director. Waititi, who has received immense criticism from the MCU fans for his treatment of the character, will not be returning for the next and potentially the final film in the series.

The international success of the manga industry has raised some very important questions regarding the content that is being portrayed in the anime and manga series. However, the most important question is whether the Western influence on the manga community is affecting its core essence or not.
Vinland Saga | Mappa Studios
This question was answered by Akira Kanai, the current Editor-in-Chief of Kodansha’s Weekly Afternoon manga magazine. Kanai has worked on many important projects, like Ajin: Demi-Human, Fragile, Vinland Saga, etc. He is a big name in the industry, and his extraordinary work as an editor speaks for itself.
According to Kanai, he does not let Western influence take away anime and manga’s core essence, as he is not easily influenced by the particular scenarios of Western countries and rather focuses on what feels intriguing on a global level. Thus keeping the roots the same with different...

There are many places in which Guillermo del Toro’s expertise shines. Whether it be with science fiction or something with a layer of gore in it, if the filmmaker has a hand in a project’s making, there is no doubt that it is going to be splendid. It is not just that he has the liberty of genres but also of mediums.

The filmmaker has shown his artistic prowess through live-action films, Hellboy films and then some. He has also proved time and again that animation as a stylistic choice only opens more doors for him. However, his influence from anime is where things get more interesting. Del Toro’s Pacific Rim drew inspiration from Neon Genesis Evangelion. So it is clear that his love for anime was integral to his growth.

Transitioning from a period of monochromatic to color television and then taking leaps with technology, the latter half of the ‘90s saw the rise of several acclaimed franchises. Additionally, the constant push to compete and the near-limitless creative options brought over by new cameras and gears helped filmmakers usher in an era of pioneering.
Among the top visionaries of this period, Steven Spielberg stands as a hallowed persona for his immense contribution to the arts as well as to modern cinema.

Spanning across genres, the director’s works knew no bounds as he published one masterpiece after another, including the likes of Jurassic Park, Schindler’s List, Jaws, and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. Moreover, each of his projects took a step forward in expanding the boundaries of cinematic possibilities, making several franchises of today stand by adapting to those techniques.

Last month, it was revealed that a new Lord of the Rings movie was in the works. This came as a major surprise for fans, especially considering how the last attempt — Rings of Power — went, but nonetheless, there’s a prequel film coming right up. There are still many questions about it, though, as little to no details have been disclosed. What do we already know about the original trilogy’s new prequel?
What’s Up With the New LotR Movie?
As surprising as it may sound, the upcoming Lord of the Rings movie will focus on… Gollum. Or, rather, Smeagol — the person who later on becomes Gollum. An intriguing character in his own right, it will definitely be interesting to see Smeagol’s descent into darkness and compare the future pathetic version of him that we already know to the person he once was.

No, it's not the early 2000s. Be that as it may, not one but two "Lord of the Rings" movies found themselves comfortably in the top 10 at the box office this past weekend. Indeed, thanks to a re-release of Peter Jackson's much-beloved trilogy based on J.R.R. Tolkien's epic fantasy saga by Fathom Events, both "The Fellowship of the Ring" and "The Two Towers" managed to sneak past "The Strangers: Chapter 1" to make it onto the charts.
"Fellowship of the Ring" found itself at number eight over the weekend with a $2.45 million haul, just behind "The Fall Guy" ($2.59 million). Landing at number nine was "The Two Towers," which pulled in $1.9 million. Warner Bros. and Fathom released both films on just over 1,500 screens. What's more, these were the 4K remastered, extended editions of the films, meaning they clocked in at nearly four hours each. Plus, they played just once each day across the country,...

It was the year 2003 when Peter Jackson released the end of his iconic trilogy with the release of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. With an ensemble cast that included Andy Serkis, Elijah Wood, Viggo Mortensen, Ian McKellen, and, countless others, the film was a spiritual experience for the people.

However, there’s some more good news. An animated film is about to release and Gollum actor Andy Serkis has nothing but praise for the film!

Late actor Bernard Hill once asked Aragorn “Where was Gondor when the Westfold fell?” and the iconic dialogue became a meme and a famous line from the franchise.

"The War of the Rohirrim" is one of our most anticipated movies of the year here at /Film. For me personally, ever since the prospect of a "Lord of the Rings" anime was announced, it's been the most exciting project set in Middle-earth, and it's not even close. When the very first early footage was shown at the 2023 Annecy Film Festival, it only made this project more exciting. Now, dear reader, I have seen about 20 minutes of the film, which is not quite done, but getting close to that point, and it left me as addicted to wanting to see more as Gollum is addicted to the One Ring.
This year's Annecy presentation started with a short video introduction by Peter Jackson, who, together with Fran Walsh, are back to executive produce the project. Jackson expressed his admiration for animators, how they brought Gollum to life, and how the medium...

For film fans, Ian McKellen is synonymous with Gandalf from the acclaimed Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit series. Recently, there was a significant buzz as McKellen hinted at another return to Middle-earth. With Andy Serkis set to direct and Peter Jackson producing the anticipated film The Hunt for Gollum, there’s a growing excitement around whether McKellen will reprise his iconic role. McKellen’s Take on Reprising Gandalf The evergreen Gandalf has long been a fan favorite, thanks to McKellen’s portrayal. Reflecting on his potential return, the 85-year-old actor told The Sunday Times that he would be elated to return,...

Japanese animator and director Kenji Kamiyama made his Annecy debut in the company of Andy Serkis on Tuesday with a 20-minute preview of upcoming anime feature The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim.
The extract was greeted with an enthusiastic response by the animation crowd jammed into the French festival’s 1000-set Grand Bonlieu auditorium.
Serkis, whose career will forever be entwined with Jrr Tolkien’s fantasy classic through his Gollum role in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit, is not directly involved in the anime feature but traveled to Annecy to introduce the footage and moderate a panel after the screening.
“You are the first people to see this,” said Serkis.

Andy Serkis led a panel for The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim as fans got to experience the first 20 minutes of the theatrical anime film at the Annecy Animation Festival.
Hailing from New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Animation, director Kenji Kamiyama’s feature is based on a short segment from author J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings and hits theaters Dec. 13. The film focuses on Hèra (voiced by Gaia Wise) — the daughter of Helm Hammerhand (Brian Cox), a notable king of Rohan — as the family attempts to protect their region from the Dunlendings.
“The fans are gonna go nuts for this,” Serkis, who is not directly involved in the film but had recently watched it, told the crowd Tuesday as he introduced the footage. “You are the first people to see this, and boy, it’s an extraordinary piece of work.”

Tolkien enthusiasts are sitting in abundance with multiple Lord of the Rings projects in the works. In addition to the Prime Video original series Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power continuing with season two, the dream team of Peter Jackson and Andy Serkis are collaborating for an all-new Gollum-centric film, The Hunt for Gollum, from Warner Bros. However, there is yet another project brewing at Warner Bros. that takes place in Middle-Earth. The animated feature Lord of the Rings: The War of Rohirrim is an animated film with Phillipa Boyens on-board as a producer. It’s set for a December 13th, 2024 release.

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is one of the most anticipated adaptations of Tolkien’s franchise without a doubt. This anime adaptation of one of Tolkien’s best stories is currently scheduled for a December 13, 2024 release, but the lucky people at the 2024 Annecy International Animation Film Festival have had the chance to actually see the first footage of the upcoming movie. We don’t know how much of it will change before the official premiere later this year, but we assume that it won’t be much, which is why the exclusive information we have from Annecy can be considered correct. So, what do we know?
In short, we can confirm that The War of the Rohirrim can indeed be considered an anime based on the production crew and staff. We can also confirm that Peter Jackson is coming back as executive producer and that...

Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh have joined Warner Bros’ and New Line Cinema’s animation The Lord Of The Rings: The War Of The Rohirrim as executive producers.
The duo’s involvement in the film, which is being directed by Kenji Kamiyama, was revealed today by producer Philippa Boyens at the film’s work-in-progress session at Annecy film festival.
“They are longtime creative partners of mine and creators of the lot of the visual world of Lord Of The Rings,” said Boyens, who co-wrote the original Lord Of The Rings trilogy and subsequent The Hobbit trilogy with Jackson and Walsh.

Warner Bros. Animation, New Line Cinema and Sola Entertainment previewed 20 minutes of its upcoming anime feature “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim,” receiving thunderous applause during the packed presentation on Tuesday at the Annecy Animation Festival.
Director Kenji Kamiyana said he was inspired by not just J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings” books, but by the films of Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, who were confirmed as exec producers of the movie during the session.
The new story is set nearly 200 years before Bilbo Baggins comes into contact with the ring of power, and centers on the House of Helm Hammerhand, the King of Rohan (voiced by Brian Cox), with a focus on his daughter, the strong willed Princess Héra (voiced by Gaia Wise). In the clip, a dispute erupts during a council meeting, leaving Wulf, a ruthless Dunlending lord, seeking vengeance.

Lord of the Rings Makes US Box Office Charts Comeback Following 4K Cinema Re-Release - Main Image
Lord of the Rings proved that it’s still hugely popular, enough that it reached the box office top 10 in the US this weekend. What makes this more impressive is that it achieved this feat with a limited re-release.
To be exact, the US box office top 10 chart over the weekend saw The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers in the eighth and ninth spots.
Even though it has been over two decades since the trilogy was initially released, the fact that they achieved box-office success again in a limited run might mean big things for the franchise moving forward.
