Ted Sarandos, boss of Netflix, has described cinema releases as ‘inefficient’. But doesn’t the streaming giant have a vested interest in the theatrical experience dying out…?
Another speech by Netflix boss Ted Sarandos, and once again, the man manages to get he and his company headlines around the entertainment press. He says things, we fall for it, names get checked, and the wheel keeps turning.
Still, two pieces of news coalesced at the same time yesterday, and they’re worth having a chat about.
On the one hand, Ted Sarandos gave an address in London where he argued that a cinema release is an “inefficient” way to distribute a film that’s cost $200m to make.
To de-clickbait his comments a little, he also admitted that “it’s unique to Netflix that we have enough scale” to put its films out, the kind of scale that means you have...

Avatar: The Last Airbender season two is officially in production. Netflix announced the news with a teaser video, and revealed the actress cast in the highly anticipated role of earthbender Toph.
First released in February, Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Nickelodeon’s beloved animated series was renewed for two more seasons in March.
The story, like its animated original, follows Aang (Gordon Cormier), the young Avatar, as he learns to master the four elements (Water, Earth, Fire, Air) to restore balance to a world threatened by the Fire Nation. Kiawentiio plays his friend Katara, and Ian Ousley her brother Sokka.
For season two, Netflix announced Miya Cech will play Toph, an earthbender who joins the crew. The video released Thursday does not reveal her face, but implies her earthbending powers.
Cech’s previous credits include one episode of the Emmy-winning Beef and Adam Sandler’s You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah.

Netflix unveiled the first big data dump of 2024 on Thursday, and the engagement report for everything watched in the first half of the year proved that subscribers really love three things: Millie Bobby Brown, sharks and animated movies.
Some of the data points were unsurprising – we knew Brown’s “Damsel” was a huge hit, and indeed it was the most-watched film for the first half of the year. But others were interesting, like just how heavily Netflix’s streaming partnership with Universal factors into what’s being watched and the relative success of Zack Snyder’s “Rebel Moon” films.
Below, we thumb through the biggest winners on the film side of the data dump.

It would be perfectly reasonable to assume that debuting at the tail end of the most wildly unpredictable presidential election in modern times would provide Saturday Night Live with all of the drama it can handle as it celebrates its hotly anticipated 50th season. But drama often lurks behind the scenes, too, as it has with the will-he-or-won’t-he retirement rumors surrounding TV maestro Lorne Michaels. In the fall of 2020, it was Michaels who appeared on Sunday Today and revealed that the 50th season would be his last. “By that point, I think I really deserve to wander off,” he told host Willie Geist.
The comment, which he then doubled down on in subsequent interviews, prompted a tireless succession of media stories about who might replace him. Tina Fey’s name emerged, along with that of Seth Meyers, Colin Jost and Michael Che. Then something happened as the milestone season...

Timothée Chalamet’s ping pong movie is adding a few more players.
Odessa A’zion has joined the cast of “Marty Supreme,” from A24 and director Josh Safdie. Rounding out the cast are magician Penn Jillette (of Penn & Teller), investor and “Shark Tank” personality Kevin O’Leary (aka Mr. Wonderful) and “Bad Lieutenant” filmmaker Abel Ferrara.
Specifics about their roles are kept under wraps, but this motley crew joins previously announced cast members Gwyneth Paltrow and Tyler, the Creator in the film, which is said to be about a professional table tennis player. Plot details are unknown, but A24 posted an image of a ping pong ball with the words “coming soon” after Variety broke news of the project in July.
Safdie and Ronald Bronstein wrote the original screenplay for “Marty Supreme” and produce alongside Eli Bush, Anthony Katagas, Chalamet and A24. Production kicks off in the fall.

Jeremy Allen White has been on a roll recently. With The Ironclaw and The Bear as credited works, the actor has earned a reputation for starring in two of the most hard-hitting and critically acclaimed projects of the past year. The 11 Emmys won by the FX series only goes on to show that White has graduated from his wayward Shameless days to now becoming one of the most impressive Hollywood stars.

Out of the 23 Emmy nominations and 11 wins, The Bear has proved itself to be a formidable force of entertainment in the comedy genre. But more often than not, Jeremy Allen White induces a panic attack and raises the blood pressure levels of his audience with each progressing episode of the series. After all, a show that was structurally inspired by Adam Sandler’s Uncut Gems is bound to have an effect of a similar sort.

Tyler, The Creator will “See You Again” very soon — but this time, on the big screen.
The Grammy Award-winning artist will make his film debut with the star-studded “Marty Supreme” alongside Gwyneth Paltrow and Timothée Chalamet. Josh Safdie is directing the A24 film from a script he co-wrote with Ronald Bronstein.
“Marty Supreme” is a fictionalized, original feature with official plot details being kept under wraps. However, Variety previously reported that the film may be loosely inspired by the life of Marty Reisman, a ping pong champion who won 22 major ping pong titles from 1946 to 2002, and five bronze medals at the World Table Tennis Championships, across his career. He also made history as the oldest player to win an open national competition in a racket sport while competing in the United States National Hardbat Championship. Reisman died in 2012.
For the film, Chalamet, Safdie, Bronstein, Eli Bush, Anthony Katagas, and A24 produce.

McDonald added that Sandler showed him a first draft of the script after fans demanded it. Tim Meadows has been cast in CBS’s upcoming pilot “Dmv.”
The former “SNL” cast member is the first to join the cast of “Dmv,” which was ordered to pilot by the network in August. The single-cam workplace comedy, which hails from CBS Studios, is written by Dana Klein, who executive produces alongside Aaron Kaplan, Wendi Trilling, Robyn Meisinger.
The official logline for “Dmv” is as follows: Based on award winning author Katherine Heiny’s short story, a single camera workplace comedy set at the place everyone dreads going most: the Dmv. Our quirky and lovable characters are making minimum wage, doing a thankless job where customers are annoyed before they even walk in the door. Good thing they have each other.
Meadows will play Gregg, a former high school English teacher, who likes to get through the driving tests, and the day, as quickly as possible, per the official character description.

We may never fully understand exactly how Lorne Michaels’ mind works. Although we do know that the Saturday Night Live producer likes white wine, hanging out with Paul Simon and movie posters featuring puffy white clouds in bright blue skies.
Well, now we have a little more info about Michaels’ thought process, specifically in terms of how he spots potential breakout stars on SNL, separating the Adam Sandlers of the world from, well, those cast members whose names we can’t remember.
This tidbit comes from Colin Jost, who, along with Michael Che, guested on Dana Carvey and David Spade’s Fly on the Wall podcast this week. It wasn’t long before the conversation turned to Michaels, specifically, some of his memorable pontifications. “Marriage is a prison that everyone’s trying to escape into,” was one Lorne-ism Carvey recalled.

The Joker may be The Dark Knight’s most iconic nemesis, but the Penguin is one of his most memorable. Ever since Danny DeVito climbed from the sewers of Gotham with his flippered hands and black drool oozing down his chin, Oswald Cobblepot has held a place on the Mount Rushmore of live-action Batman villain portrayals. Colin Farrell’s turn as the iconic character couldn’t be more different from the twisted version audiences saw in Tim Burton’s Batman Returns, but its equally as effective.

How long is too long to wait to make a sequel? As long as the filmmakers' have a workable idea that justifies getting the gang back together, there is no such thing as "too long." Eddie Murphy recently delivered a clinic in this notion by following up the rotten "Coming 2 America" (made 33 years after the beloved original) with the thoroughly entertaining "Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F" (which arrived 40 years after the first film). Fans will always be happy with what they've already got, but if you can give them a second go-round that doesn't travesty everything they loved about the original, they'll gladly fork over their cash.
Adam Sandler has made his own share of sequels, but he's yet to revisit one of his movies that didn't outright suck. So he's in uncharted territory with "Happy Gilmore 2," which will bring back the power-hitting pro golfer whose success on...

Julie Bowen may have become a household name on ABC’s Modern Family. However, the actress who played Claire Dunphy, the mom of three, has played many other roles that showed off her versatility. Although her character on the show was hardworking, sarcastic, and responsible to a fault with a tendency to micromanage, not all the star’s roles have had the same qualities. One of the most memorably brilliant creative choices behind the MacGruber movie was the casting of Val Kilmer as the dastardly Dieter von Cunth. Not only is Kilmer an icon of ‘80s and ‘90s action movies, but as Airplane! proved, putting dramatic actors in absurd roles is often way funnier.
But Kilmer wasn’t the only name that was floated for the awkwardly-named villain. Apparently MacGruber came very close to battling the legendary actor who faced off against Batman, Adam Sandler and his own wife and child after a few stiff drinks served by a ghost: Jack Nicholson.
In the most recent episode of The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers Podcast, the trio discussed their work on “People Getting Punched Right Before Eating.” It wasn’t a metaphor or anything, it was literally about people getting punched right before eating.

Jam-packed with his familiar brand of vulgar yet verbose stoner humor and free-flowing riffs on movies—especially his own—the vibes are certainly off the charts in Kevin Smith’s The 4:30 Movie. Set in the summer of 1986, the film chronicles an initially magical day in the life of a Smith stand-in, Brian David (Austin Zajur), after he invites a girl from school, Melody Barnegat (Siena Agudong), to their local movie theater. But a raucous comedy of errors ensues thanks to Brian’s slacker friends, Burny (Nicholas Cirillo) and Belly (Reed Northrup), and a revolving door of local weirdos played by Smith’s Irl famous friends, turning the theater into a lawless asylum.
The 4:30 Movie doesn’t so much find Smith in his wheelhouse as it does in some kind of Synecdoche, New York-style Tower of slacker-movie Babylon. That, though, doesn’t translate to comedy gold, let alone a cohesive film.

Maybe there’s hope for quality Netflix originals apart from its awards contenders. “Rebel Ridge,” a topical thriller about an ex-Marine confronting a corrupt small-town sheriff, is #1 at Netflix. It stars Aaron Pierre — who stepped into the role after John Boyega walked off the production in June 2021. A respected actor and ascendant star, Pierre is not a household name like Mark Wahlberg or Adam Sandler or Eddie Murphy, all of whom recently took Netflix originals to #1.

IndieWire has watched his career for years, but directors like these also have wound up at Netflix making films that lack edginess or creativity. This seems like a happy exception. On his 58th birthday, Adam Sandler confirmed that Happy Gilmore 2 has officially begun production.
In an Instagram post, the actor and comedian shared a photo of the Boston Bruins jersey he famously wore in the first film. “It ain’t over. The way I see it… we’ve only just begun,” he captioned the post, once again referencing the original movie.
Sandler previously revealed that Happy Gilmore 2 would film in New Jersey beginning in September. “It’s good. We worked hard on the script. We didn’t want to let anyone down. We came up with an idea — we wrote our asses off,” he said during an appearance on The Tonight Show in August.
Alongside Sandler, original Happy Gilmore cast member Christopher McDonald, a.k.a. Shooter McGavin, is expected to appear in the sequel. A number of professional golfers will also make cameos in the movie, as will NFL star Travis Kelce.

The Biden administration announced this week that it’s taking broad actions to stop Russian schemes designed to influence the 2024 elections. As part of the effort, it’s shutting down a company called Social Design Agency, “which the Treasury Department previously sanctioned for allegedly running fake news sites in Europe on behalf of the Russian government.”
The government released Social Design Agency internal documents that detail its plans to influence the election, including spreading disinformation in swing states and monitoring the accounts of people it considers “influencers,” including comedians. That caught the attention of Redditor cannonfunk who posed a question to the r/StandUpComedy subreddit: “The Russians are actively targeting comedians who might be easily bribed to spread their propaganda. Who do you think was on the list?”

Like many popular comedic actors of the day, Adam Sandler got his start on “Saturday Night Live” first as a writer and then as a cast member. He was spotted by weekend update anchor Dennis Miller doing stand-up comedy and Miller recommended him for the show. Sandler was a big success on the show, particularly doing song parodies during the Weekend Update segments. Sandler left the show in 1995 after only five years on the program. Years later when Conan O’Brien was having his own problems with NBC, Sandler admitted to O’Brien that he was actually fired from “SNL” and didn’t leave voluntarily as had been assumed.
Sandler started off doing comedy films after that but has evolved into doing dramatic work at times. While he has a pretty strong track record as a box office draw, he has also often been the target of poor reviews from critics...

The idea of Travis Kelce retiring from the NFL might be unthinkable to Kansas City Chiefs fans.
But the fact is, the man is 34; he plays a physically demanding position, and — oh, and as you might have heard, he’s got a lot on his plate these days.
Yes, Travis is dating Taylor Swift, and their relationship receives far more attention than the tight end’s performance on the field.
Fans have slammed Taylor as a distraction to the team, which is obviously ridiculous.
But an argument could be made that Travis is just nearing the end of his time on the field.
Could Travis be headed to retirement? Is he ready to embrace life after football?
There are a lot of signs that point to yes.

When Tell Me Lies debuted in the fall of 2022, no one was sure how it would do. The Hulu series, about a toxic relationship between two students at a fictional college, was the first project to come out of Emma Roberts’ adaptation-focused first-look deal at the streamer and featured a cast of relatively unknown — at the time — actors. But then, very quickly, star Grace Van Patten began to notice something strange; when she walked around Los Angeles with Jackson White (who plays the other half of the aforementioned toxic relationship), girls were rolling down their car windows or stopping them on the sidewalk to scream at her to get away from White, as if the world of the show were real.
“It felt like we were on a reality show,” Van Patten says. “It was cool that people were so invested in these characters — but also a little scary because...

Fans on Facebook have been speculating on what a hypothetical Flubber 2 would starring Adam Sandler would look like, leading to a concept poster making the rounds.
The poster seems to be referring to the 1997 Flubber movie starring Robin Williams, but that was not the only time the story of a professor and his "flying rubber" was told on screen.
Disney released the first Flubber movie, The Absent-Minded Professor starring Fred MacMurray, in 1961, and a sequel, Son of Flubber, in 1963. 1988 saw a remake of the original movie, also called The Absent-Minded Professor, this time starring Harry Anderson (and available to watch on YouTube).

The poster seems to be referring to the 1997 Flubber movie starring Robin Williams, but that was not the only time the story of a professor and his "flying rubber" was told on screen.

What the heck is Make Joke From Face — besides the name of Nick Swardson’s new stand-up special on YouTube?
“It’s just an idiotic thing that me and my friend Chris would always say,” Swardson tells me. “My running thing with my specials is I don’t take them seriously in terms of naming them. My first hour special was called Seriously, Who Farted? The network was like, ‘Oh, that’s funny. But seriously, what are you going to call it?’”
Swardson’s the kind of comic who wants to get nominated for an award — Oscar or Razzie, it doesn’t matter — just so someone could stand at a podium, read a list of nominees and then conclude with “Seriously, Who Farted?”
“Comedy should just be absurd,” Swardson says. “It’s silly. I feel like people forget that.”
We recently reminisced about classic comedy projects he discusses in the new special,...

Adam Sandler, the acclaimed actor and comedian, has unwittingly become a fashion trendsetter among Gen Z, with his “sloppy” style gaining traction on TikTok.
In a recent TikTok video that garnered over 12 million views, Sandler was approached by a user known as “Mystery Fashionist,” who praised the actor’s “drip” — a slang term for stylish clothing. Sandler’s response was characteristically modest and humorous.
“It just happened; I really didn’t think it through,” Sandler said in the video. “There’s sneakers, there’s some goofy shorts. Whatever is in the closet, I grab it.”
window._taboola = window._taboola || []; _taboola.push({ mode: 'thumbnails-mid', container: 'taboola-mid-article-thumbnails', placement: 'Mid Article Thumbnails', target_type: 'mix' });
Sandler’s approach to fashion contrasts with the “dad core” trend, which deliberately embraces functionality. While dad core adherents might pair a blazer with a baseball cap or mix formal and casual elements, Sandler’s style is more straightforward and down-to-earth.
