For almost 40 years, Joel Coen and Ethan Coen – better known as the Coen Brothers – have created a number of quirky, singular titles spanning a variety of genres. They’ve also become industry and academy favorites, picking up four Oscar wins for writing, directing and producing. Celebrate this dynamic duo by taking a look back at all 18 of their films together, ranked worst to best.
The Coens made their feature debut with the Southwestern neo-noir “Blood Simple” (1984). Shot on a shoestring budget with a then largely unknown cast, the film established the brothers’ talent for visually striking, wholly original stories.
They followed their breakout hit with a series of increasingly ambitious, wildly different features: the wacky Southern farce “Raising Arizona” (1987), the moody gangster saga “Millers Crossing” (1990), the bizarre Hollywood satire “Barton Fink” (1991), and the nostalgic screwball comedy “The Hudsucker Proxy” (1994).

Unfortunately, it's time to say goodbye to a few movies leaving Netflix in August 2024, including The Edge of Seventeen starring Hailee Steinfeld.
At the end of every month, there are usually a handful of movies that leave Netflix and head to a different streaming service or cable network. In August, there are more than a few movies that I think people will be especially bummed are leaving Netflix.
We shared a list of six good movies leaving Netflix in August, including an action movie from a man who is probably really going through it right now, Ben Affleck.

Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.
Drive-Away Dolls (Ethan Coen)
The kind of movie made to stumble upon surfing cable at 2 am in a half-awake, half-intoxicated stupor, Ethan Coen’s Drive-Away Dolls aims for a lower artistic bar than anything the director (and certainly his brother) has previously approached, which accounts for much of its charm. Ethan Coen and Tricia Cooke first completed the script some two decades ago––titled Drive-Away Dykes both then and now, if one goes by the end credits––and the film’s B-movie, pleasure-first appeal lies in the feeling that they simply dusted off a copy and immediately embarked on production. A slapdash narrative populated with eminently likable characters best described as joke-delivering caricatures, this marvelously queer road-trip comedy caper is a fleet-footed...

Veteran character actor and filmmaker John Turturro delighted an audience at the Sarajevo Film Festival on Wednesday with a masterclass about his extensive and eclectic career spanning film, television and theatre. Speaking to a packed theater at the Bosnian Cultural Center, the Brooklyn native gave insights into his most reputable acting work ranging from Do the Right Thing to The Big Lebowski to Barton Fink to the Transformers franchise as well has his directorial work for films such as Romance and Cigarettes and Mac.
After the iconic Jesus Quintana bowling scene in The Big Lebowski was played to the audience (which was met with rapturous applause), Turturro said that Joel and Ethan Coen had seen him in the play La Puta Vida by Reinaldo Povod, where Turturro plays a homosexual pedophile. “There’s an ambition in ‘Fargo’ in balancing story, theme, character, entertainment and action,” states creator and showrunner Noah Hawley. In our recent webchat he adds, “If you entertain people, they give you permission to do more with theme or character, to do something that seems elevated.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
“Fargo” is the FX anthology series created by Hawley, inspired by the 1996 Joel and Ethan Coen film. Each season takes a darkly comedic look at characters dealing with life and crime in the Midwest. “’Fargo’ is quite different than any show I’ve ever worked on,” admits music supervisor Maggie Phillips. In our recent webchat she continues, “The music of the show, the soundtrack and the songs, get to be a character of its own. On some shows, I wouldn’t want to be bold and call attention to the songs. In ‘Fargo’ you want people to notice and be thought provoking.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Don't look now, but Matt Damon has become one of cinema's most exciting screen presences over the last decade or so. Having taken his leading-man looks and turned into a character actor's dream, he's figured out how to enjoy the best of both worlds. If Christopher Nolan, Steven Soderbergh, Ethan Coen, or any other prolific filmmaker has a buzzy, high-concept thriller in the works, you can almost set your watch based on Damon popping up in a brief supporting role or even a cameo late in the game -- and, more often than not, it's as a scumbag villain meant to reinforce each film's themes. It takes a serious absence of ego to embrace this (relatively) unsexy phase of one's career, in which such thankless work might only ever win the affections of the Film Twitter crowd, dad-movie enthusiasts, and not much else. But it's a rare talent that can...

As far as child actor debuts, it's not quite Hailee Steinfeld in Joel and Ethan Coen's "True Grit." But now that the whole world knows full well that Glen Powell is a bona fide movie star (a fact getting slammed home with a tempestuous fury this week in "Twisters"), we can look back at his first big-screen appearance in Robert Rodriguez's 2003 film "Spy Kids 3: Game Over" and kind of see it.
Powell's big scene arrives early in the movie, when Juni (Daryl Sabata) wanders into a massive arena. It's here Juni meets the Long-fingered Boy (identified as such only in the credits), who zips the Spy Kid up to the top of a tower, throws him into a robotic suit, and informs him he'll be doing battle with a formidable combatant named Demetra (Courtney Jines). Robert Towne, the screenwriter as superstar whose Oscar-winning work on the 1974 classic Chinatown is widely recognized as the gold standard for movie scripts, has died. He was 89.
Towne died Monday at his home in Los Angeles, publicist Carri McClure announced.
He also received Academy Award nominations for The Last Detail (1973) and Shampoo (1975) in the years surrounding his most famous work.
His takes on Los Angeles were etched with melancholy and painted the city as one of beauty and sadness. In Chinatown and Shampoo, gumshoe J.J. Gittes (Jack Nicholson) and Beverly Hills hairdresser George Roundy (Warren Beatty) end up alone. (Towne collaborated often with those actors.)
This squinty vantage on Southern California, as a temptress who dashes hopes, also was evident in his script for Tequila Sunrise (1988), which starred Mel Gibson as a retired drug dealer, Kurt Russell as a cop and Michelle Pfeiffer as the femme fatale.

Who says 1994 was a classic year for cinema? Netflix begins today to make that argument, curating a release of 17 films that turned 30 this year. The streamer has its list below. Get a contract wrong for a movie, and a studio might just end up paying the price a little further down the line…
A word to the wise: when entering into a pact with Tommy Lee Jones, make sure your contract is watertight. Because Mr Jones – he who will not sanction your buffoonery nor crack a smile at your Academy Award presentation skit – will happily take advantage of a typo or poorly-drafted phrase in your written agreement.
Mr Jones claims he took a lower salary to star in 2007’s Oscar-winning No Country For Old Men due to the provision of generous box office bonuses should the film prove a financial success. Directors Joel and Ethan Coen and producer Scott Rudin came to similar agreements – although it was a bit of a gamble on all their parts.
Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans face an unusual array of holiday challenges in the first trailer for their Christmas movie Red One.
Jake Kasdan’s action-comedy feature from Amazon MGM Studios is set for worldwide theatrical release on Nov. 15. Red One centers on North Pole head of security Callum Drift (Johnson) and naughty-lister Jack O’Malley (Evans) teaming up after the disappearance of Santa Claus, who is known as “Red One” and played by J.K. Simmons.
“Are you saying Santa Claus has been kidnapped?” Evans asks in the trailer.
Rounding out the cast are Kiernan Shipka, Lucy Liu, Mary Elizabeth Ellis and Nick Kroll, along with Bonnie Hunt as Mrs. Claus.
The film’s teaser poster was released in an Instagram post Monday and hinted at the story by showing a “Missing” poster for Santa Claus, who was last seen at the North Pole. “We need your help,” read the caption signed by Callum Drift.

Earning numerous platinum and diamond albums throughout her career, she’s previously put out albums including Plastic Hearts, Younger Now, Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz, Bangerz, Can’t Be Tamed, Breakout, and Meet Miley Cyrus.

Stars: Margaret Qualley, Geraldine Viswanathan, Beanie Feldstein, Colman Domingo, Pedro Pascal, Bill Camp, Matt Damon | Written by Ethan Coen, Tricia Clarke | Directed by Ethan Coen
Directed by Ethan Coen, who co-wrote the script with his wife, Tricia Clarke, Drive-Away Dolls is a queer road movie-slash-crime caper anchored by a pair of delightful performances by co-leads Margaret Qualley and Geraldine Viswanathan. The plot is admittedly slight and the jokes will almost certainly prove too puerile for some tastes, but it has attitude to spare and the fun characters carry it through.
Set in 1999, on the eve of Y2K, the film begins in Philadelphia, where Texan good-time-girl Jamie (Qualley) has just broken up with her hot-tempered cop lover Sukie (Beanie Feldstein). Needing to get out of town, Jamie jumps at the chance to accompany her strait-laced lesbian best friend Marian (Viswanathan) on a road trip to Tallahassee, Florida, so...

Forty years old this year, the neo-noir Blood Simple marked the debut of Joel and Ethan Coen, and remains a captivating example of low-budget filmmaking.
To date, Joel and Ethan Coen haven’t made a pure horror film (though they’ve talked about it). Blood Simple, their 1984 debut, undoubtedly comes close. A neo-noir shot on a low budget, it shows that the writer-director brothers had their style down right from the beginning of their careers. Its script is witty and terse; its photography is fluid and stylish; its characters and tone are somehow both mundane and off-beat. Like so many of their later film, Blood Simple also defies easy categorisation; it’s a neo-noir, it’s a black comedy, and in several visceral scenes, dips gleefully into horror.
Much like Fargo or The Big Lebowski or any other thriller-infused Coen brothers film you could name, there are no criminal masterminds in Blood Simple – just ordinary,...

Free-spirited mom. Strict mother. Abused wife. Boozing adulteress. Mousy governess. Strong-willed nomad. With her talent for deadpan delivery and with one of the most expressive faces in the industry, Frances McDormand has created a treasure trove of complex and diverse characters over the past 40 years, earning numerous accolades along the way.
McDormand was born Cynthia Ann Smith on June 23, 1957, and was adopted when she was a year-and-a-half old and renamed Frances Louise McDormand. After studying theater, including receiving a Master of Fine Arts degree from Yale School of Drama, she quickly made a name for herself on stage, as well as in film and television.
In 1984, McDormand made her film debut in “Blood Simple,” the first film made by her new husband Joel Coen and his brother Ethan Coen. She has collaborated with the brothers in seven other films, including her first Oscar-winning performance in “Fargo” (1996). In addition to her film work,...

Editor’s note: Deadline’s It Starts on the Page features standout limited or anthology series scripts in 2024 Emmy contention.
Typically a series five seasons in can show signs of wear and tear. However, for Fargo creator Noah Hawley a fifth time was a charm, not just in a stronger homage to the original 1996 multi-Oscar winning movie, but a deconstruction of current day red-state attitudes. For him, Fargo is about the tragedy that occurs when people fail to communicate, and this season centers around the varying definitions of freedom. Not to mention, it features several twists and turns one doesn’t see coming.
Season 5 follows Juno Temple as Dot Lyon, a housewife with a dark past who is mired in warring America, for Episode 1 tees off with a riot that breaks out at a school board meeting which results in the show’s protagonist tasing an officer and heading to...

Spoiler Alert: This article and video contain spoilers for Season 5.
“I was kinda disappointed originally,” admits Lamorne Morris about his character’s ending on “Fargo.” In our recent webchat he adds, “As an actor you want to be this hero with your shirt off and a six-pack. You want to be Denzel Washington, but that doesn’t serve the story all the time. The way this went down served the story.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

George Clooney and Brad Pitt aren’t exactly team players in the first trailer for their new comedic thriller, Wolfs.
Sony Pictures is set to release Jon Watts’ movie in theaters Sept. 20. Amy Ryan, Austin Abrams and Poorna Jagannathan round out the cast in the feature that hails from Apple Studios and centers on two lone-wolf professional fixers hired to do the same job.
Watts (Spider-Man: No Way Home) wrote and directed Wolfs. Clooney and Grant Heslov produce for Smokehouse Pictures, while Pitt, Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner produce for Plan B Entertainment. Watts and Dianne McGunigle are also producers.
In the trailer, released Wednesday, Clooney, a professional fixer, is hired to cover up a crime.
“There’s nobody who can do who I do,” he says as he gets to work.

The fix is in, and it’s lowkey hilarious. For the first time in 15 years, George Clooney and Brad Pitt are together again for the upcoming thriller Wolfs. The film reuintes Clooney and Pitt as rival fixers called into to dispose of a corpse by their shadowy employer, only for the corpse to be far from dead, and in the possession of a massive amount of drugs. Going by the teaser trailer, the film has serious buddy-comedy vibes, mixed with a bit of gunplay and action. With a September 20th release date, a debut at one of the fall film festivals would make sense, with TIFF an obvious choice for that looks to be a star-studded crowdpleaser. Indeed, seeing Clooney and Pitt mixing it up again is fantastic.

When deciding what to watch, we often rely on other people's opinions, and that's perfectly fine. If we have doubts about the genre of the general nature of what we want to see, if it's not a new movie that just hit streaming platforms, the choice can be difficult because of the huge variety of thighs that are available.
Who to trust better if not your favorite director, then? For example, Quentin Tarantino is always vocal about what he likes and dislikes in movies, but so is Guillermo del Toro.
Therefore, if you trust the choices of the iconic director and you're in the mood for something old-school and classic – here are del Toro's 5 favorite movies to watch.

Here's a new project announcements that just gets better and better as it goes on: Laura Dern and Margaret Qualley are set to star in an A24-produced Netflix limited series adaptation of Daisy Jones & The Six author Taylor Jenkins Reid's Forever, Interrupted, with Yellowjackets co-producer/writer Julia Bicknell attached as writer-showrunner. That's quite the team-up.
As reported by Deadline, the series will be a tender tale of love and loss told across dual timelines. Forever, Interrupted centres around Elsie (Qualley), whose whirlwind romance with lover Ben is cut cruelly short when, just nine days after having gotten married and found their happily ever after, Ben unexpectedly dies. In the aftermath of her husband's passing, Elsie finds herself coming face-to-face with her mother-in-law Susan (Dern), who doesn't even know she exists. Charles Portis' novel "True Grit" has been brought to life on the big screen several times, but Henry Hathaway's 1969 John Wayne-starring adaptation is perhaps the most popular. Wayne's rendition of Rooster Cogburn is one of his most-recognized late-period roles, and it also earned him an Academy Award for Best Actor — an accolade that feels thoroughly deserving due to the actor's ability to seamlessly inhabit the plucky, one-eyed U.S. Marshal. Portis' "True Grit" is told from the perspective of the adolescent Mattie Ross, whose deadpan, no-nonsense demeanor is our portal to the treacherous grown-ups around her, and her bond with the tough-as-nails marshal soon emerges as the heart of the drama. Wayne expertly balances Rooster's more vicious sensibilities with the hidden vulnerabilities that emerge when he helps Mattie exact revenge and looks endlessly cool while charging toward armed dudes with dual guns on horseback.

Margaret Qualley and Demi Moore are teased as playing the same character for feminist body-horror thriller “The Substance.”
The Cannes feature, which premieres in competition at the festival, has already been picked up by Mubi for worldwide distribution. French director Coralie Fargeat helms her sophomore film, following her debut “Revenge” which premiered at TIFF in 2017.
“The Substance” is titled for a mysterious serum that transforms users into the ideal versions of themselves. The elusive official synopsis reads: “It generates another you. If you respect the balance…what could possibly go wrong?”

The First Family of Marvel Comics has company. With a summer start date in London, “Fantastic Four,” the essential comic book IP which has yet to be integrated into the MCU, has announced new cast members that will join Pedro Pascal’s Reed Richards, Vanessa Kirby’s Sue Storm (later Sue Storm-Richards), Joseph Quinn (Johnny Storm) and Ebon Moss-Bachrach (the Ever-Lovin’ Blue-Eyed Thing).

Exclusive: Chris Evans, Anya Taylor-Joy, Salma Hayek Pinault and Brendan Fraser will star in Sacrifice, a film co-written and to be directed by Romain Gavras. Like his last film Athena that premiered last Venice and was released on Netflix, Sacrifice has a similar combustible and propulsive anarchy coursing through the film.
This is closer to satire, but the script by Gavras and Will Arbery was strong enough to compel the leads to commit over the span of four days since the script was sent to talent. More actors will be set shortly, and I expect that the project — CAA Media Finance is selling the world with Rocket Science — won’t have a lot of territories left by the time buyers hit the Croisette. All the elements are there to launch Gavras as a major writer-director, here making his first English-language film.

Throughout the early 2000s, the rock ‘n’ roll film festival “Don’t Knock the Rock” was one of the highlights of any L.A.-based cinephile’s year, an impeccably assembled program of movies, live performances, and panels celebrating the intersection between rock ‘n’ roll and cinema. Created by writer-director Allison Anders and music supervisor Tiffany Anders, “Don’t Knock the Rock” was beloved for its determination to showcase difficult-to-see music documentaries and for the breadth and depth of its programming.
The festival last graced L.A. screens in 2016, but now it’s returning to Hollywood via the American Cinematheque with a line-up that’s one of the best ever. From May 23-27, “Don’t Knock the Rock” will screen an eclectic mix of documentaries, music-themed narrative films, and essential retrospective programs at the Cinematheque’s Los Feliz venue, with an added virtual component that will stream from May 23-July 31. Three time Oscar-nominated scribe John Logan is adapting National Book Award-winning author Cormac McCarthy’s novel Blood Meridian or The Evening Redness in the West for the big screen for New Regency.
John Hillcoat, who previously adapted McCarthy’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Road, will direct and produce along with Keith Redmon for New Regency.
The sprawling novel is widely considered one of the greatest works of American literature. Published in 1985, Blood Meridian or The Evening Redness in the West is an epic tale of the violence and depravity that attended America’s westward expansion which brilliantly subverts the conventions of the Western novel and the mythology of the Wild West. Based on historical events that took place on the Texas-Mexico border in the 1850s, it traces the fortunes of a 14-year-old Tennesseean who stumbles into a nightmarish world where Indians are being murdered and the market for their scalps is thriving.
