Before you make your 2024 Emmy predictions for Best Comedy Supporting Actress, take a look through our photo gallery featuring the ladies most likely to land in the lineup. Since last year’s winner – Ayo Edebiri (“The Bear”) – is now campaigning as a lead, this race is wide open to an array of possible newcomers, past contenders, and even a few former winners.
At this point, the clear frontrunner is potential category first-timer Meryl Streep (“Only Murders in the Building”), who previously achieved two Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actress wins for “Holocaust” (1978) and “Angels in America” (2004). Hoping to challenge her are three of Edebiri’s “The Bear” cast mates: Liza Colon-Zayas, Abby Elliott, and Molly Gordon.
Of Edebiri’s six 2023 competitors, only two – “Abbott Elementary” pair Janelle James and Sheryl Lee Ralph – are involved in the current race. Ralph took this prize for the same series in 2022, defeating Hannah Einbinder...

Steve Carell has landed a fun new gig alongside Tina Fey!
The pair will co-star in a new Netflix series titled The Four Seasons, which Tina is also co-creating alongside Lang Fisher and Tracey Wigfield.
The series will be based on the 1981 film of the same name. The 1981 film was written and directed by Alan Alda, and he co-starred alongside Carol Burnett.
Here’s the film’s synopsis, according to IMDb: “Three couples vacation together every season. After one divorces, feelings of betrayal and more spawn criticisms of one another, but the things that keep them together are stronger than those which might pull them apart.”
This won’t be the first time Steve and Tina work together. They co-starred in the 2010 feature film Date Night as well!
Production will begin later this year.

Palm Royale with its meticulously matched period décor and costuming is a true immersion in late 1960s Palm Beach culture. But while watching the Apple TV+ series, one can’t help but see the connections between the topics that were emerging as national concerns then and the biggest social issues now.
“It’s so cool to think about how far we’ve come as women and that we have so many options today, but 1969 isn’t that long ago,” says Leslie Bibb, who stars in the Kristen Wiig-starring comedy as Dinah, a woman desperate to maintain her wealthy status after marrying for money rather than love. “It’s not that far back that women’s rights weren’t an issue.”

In Palm Royale, parties and Palm Beach high society go together like Maxine Dellacorte (Kristen Wiig) and her signature grasshopper cocktail. But pulling off these ostentatious displays of wealth and popularity disguised as charitable events, episode after episode, was no small feat for the production team behind the Apple TV+ series.

Splashy and flashy (but not really trashy), Palm Royale on Apple TV+ fits easily into the ranks of high-gloss, high-concept, female-driven dramas that have enjoyed a Golden Age on premium streaming channels this past decade.
Recent series like Bad Sisters (also on Apple TV+) and Max's Big Little Lies drew a substantial audience with a combination of star-studded ensemble casts, heavy themes, and plots from best-selling domestic thrillers like those written by author Liane Moriarty.
Palm Royale ticks many of those boxes (it's based on the 2018 novel Mr. and Mrs. American Pie by Juliet McDaniel), but instead of sexual violence and trauma, it brings big laughs and a soapy jewel-box mystery to the female-centric limited series tablescape.
Palm Royale's opening credit sequence immediately places the series in time and taste by evoking Valley of The Dolls and James Bond with its graphic animation.

‘Hacks’ stars and producers prep for show’s overdue Season 3 return by defending why women are funny
At last, our long national nightmare is nearly over.
It only seems like the much-decorated Max comedy “Hacks” has been away forever. It’s actually been less than two years. Overcoming strikes by writers and actors and a health crisis involving star Jean Smart – who won the Emmy for Best Comedy Actress in each of the show’s first pair of seasons – the series returns for Season 3 on May 2. The streamer will roll out two episodes on May 2, 9, 16 and 23 before running the finale of the nine-episode season on May 30.
“Hacks” was something of an Emmy juggernaut in 2021 and 2022 before going Awol due to a 10-month production delay in 2023. It earned 15 nominations in its first season and 17 in its second. It converted six of those 32 nominations (which included a pair of Best Comedy series bids) to wins, including the two for Smart as well as for the show’s writing and directing.

[This story contains spoilers from the fifth episode of Palm Royale, “Maxine Shakes the Tree.”]

Jean-Paul Vignon, the romantic French vocalist and actor who impressed audiences on both sides of the Atlantic during an eight-decade career, died March 22 of liver cancer in Beverly Hills, his family announced. He was 89.

Ed Sullivan would soon showcase him on his Sunday night CBS variety show in eight appearances — including one in which he sang a duet with young Liza Minnelli — and he became a regular guest on Johnny Carson and Merv Griffin’s programs.
Signed to Columbia Records, Vignon released his first U.S. album, Because I Love You, in 1964. Three years later, he had a supporting role opposite William Holden and Cliff Robertson in the World War II film The Devil’s Brigade.

[This story contains spoilers from episode four of Palm Royale, “Maxine Rolls the Dice.”]
When Katie O’Connell first read Mr. and Mrs. American Pie, Juliet McDaniel’s 2018 novel that was adapted for Apple TV+’s new period comedy-drama Palm Royale, she was “obsessed” with its 1960s setting.
“It just felt like such a cool time period to explore,” O’Connell tells The Hollywood Reporter. “I loved the idea of an outsider coming into what’s seemingly the most un-woke group of women on the planet. It just felt like there was something there.”
Laura Dern and her Jaywalker Pictures producing partner Jayme Lemons agreed when O’Connell brought the novel to them, using it as a springboard for the 10-part series Dern now executive produces and stars in alongside Kristen Wiig, Carol Burnett, Ricky Martin, Allison Janney and Leslie Bibb.

Carol Burnett reminisced about her misadventures in late-night television during the legendary comedian’s visit Tuesday to The Late Show.
Speaking to host Stephen Colbert, Burnett recalled a visit to Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show where she intentionally — and unbeknownst to Carson — pretended to be “the world’s worst guest,” answering his many questions with simply “yes” or “no.”
Burnett also appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show seven times, but one visit especially stood out: When she was a guest alongside Elvis Presley. “They put me on first… Nobody wanted to see me.

Carol Burnett reflected on the time she guest starred on “The Ed Sullivan Show” the same day as Elvis Presley.
As a guest on “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” promoting the Apple TV+ series “Palm Royale,” the 90-year-old Burnett was prompted to look back at her legendary career in television. Since she guest starred on “The Ed Sullivan Show” seven times, Colbert asked Burnett if she ever interfaced with the “big names” that took the stage.
“I was on when Elvis was on, when he was in the army. And they did a whole big thing when he was in the army on the stage,” she said. “And they put me on first. Nobody wanted to see me. It was Elvis. ‘Where the hell is Elvis?’ I bombed. Oh my god, it was terrible. It was awful.”

Kelly Ripa has suggested retiring from her seat on Live with Kelly and Mark for months now, and it seems that the time may be almost here.
Kelly has revealed that she isn’t a morning person, so getting up and slogging away at a morning show every day for years does not make her happy.
Live seems to be getting old for Kelly if we believe what she hinted at recently during the host chat with her husband, Mark Consuelos.
The morning was already off on the wrong foot because Kelly had to apologize to everyone for her and Mark coming out late.
It seemed to be one of those situations where they should have aired a pretaped show, even though that risks angering the fans, but Kelly plowed through anyway.

“Game of Thrones” creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have returned for their next act with a bold new science fiction series that is as entertaining as it is full of big ideas. The Emmy-winning duo teams with Alexander Woo (“The Terror: Infamy”) for Netflix’s “3 Body Problem,” an adaptation of Liu Cixin’s Chinese novel “The Three-Body Problem,” which is the first in a trilogy that was once deemed unadaptable. But hey, we’re all about proving people wrong these days.
The eight-episode first season, which is now streaming, transports the novel’s action to the U.K., depicting a world in which the results of experiments involving particle accelerators have stopped making sense, revealing that the world as we know it — science as we understand it — is no longer functioning as it should. On March 20, 2024, Apple TV+ premiered “Palm Royale,” a star-studded new comedy series with Kristen Wiig playing an ambitious woman scheming to secure her seat at America’s most exclusive table: Palm Beach high society circa 1969. Reviews are mixed (it’s currently at 60% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes), but viewers are sure to enjoy the ensemble cast that includes Carol Burnett, Laura Dern, Allison Janney, Josh Lucas and Ricky Martin (to name a few!).
“Palm Royale” was created by Abe Sylvia (“George & Tammy”) and is based on the 2018 novel “Mr. & Mrs. American Pie” by Juliet McDaniel. The 10-episode series kicks off with “Maxing Goes to Palm Beach,” written by Sylvia and directed by Tate Taylor. Read our full review round-up below.

Enlightened was more than just the title of the HBO TV series Laura Dern starred in from 2011-2013. It’s also the state of being the actress and her future producing partner, Jayme Lemons, found themselves in after Dern served as an executive producer and Lemons a first-time producer on the comedy-drama.
“Once we had that experience on Enlightened, we both felt like we have all of these other passions, maybe it’s time we focus more on getting these projects done,” Dern tells The Hollywood Reporter in the conversation below.
Thus the creation of Jaywalker Pictures in 2017, Dern and Lemons’ production company whose projects span genres. From the 2020 documentary The Way I See It, about the life of former Chief Official White House Photographer Pete Souza; and the Academy Award-winning short If Anything Happens I Love You, about two parents grieving their daughter who was killed in a school shooting,...

Do not underestimate Tate Taylor’s commitment to “Palm Royale.”
The director and executive producer of Apple TV’s star-studded period dramedy — about Kristin Wiig’s have-not fighting to break into the ranks of Palm Beach society — took his job as director of the first episode so seriously he was asked to leave. Not the show; Taylor was kicked out of an actual Palm Beach club.
Taylor and production designer Jon Carlos went on a 42-hour trip to Palm Beach to get a feel for the town. “The club that the Palm Royale [the fictional club that gives the series its name] is modeled after is very exclusive,” Taylor told IndieWire. “And so I said, ‘I’m going to break in. And I want to get kicked out.’ And I did! I went through the doors, I looked at all the people — of course, I was in board shorts and flip flops — and I got kicked out.”

In the first episode of the new Apple comedy series Palm Royale, Kristen Wiig’s Maxine tells a long, rambling story to Dinah (Leslie Bibb), a wealthy woman she’s trying to befriend. An impatient Dinah tells her, “I have lost the thread here, Maxine.”
Dinah is meant to be one of the villains of Palm Royale, forever trying to undercut Maxine’s attempts to claw her way into Palm Beach high society in the summer of 1969. Yet in this moment and many others, her complaints about Maxine ring truer...

“Why do you want to be where you’re not wanted?”
Posed by Linda Shaw (Laura Dern) — a proud hippie of the ’60s recently accused of “dressing like an indigent Mennonite railway priestess” — this question rests at the center of “Palm Royale,” alongside its recipient, Maxine Simmons (Kristen Wiig). The 40-something new kid in town insists to everyone she meets they use her married name, D’ellacourt, in the hopes its notoriety around Palm Beach will help hasten her acceptance there. Maxine wants nothing more than to be a member of high society, rubbing elbows with the movers and shakers at South Florida’s glam parties and opulent benefits, and she knows looking the part is just as important as living it. To her benefit: She is, in fact, a D’ellacourt. She is not, however, as wealthy as the minted moniker suggests, which proves a recurring impediment in her...
