When the 77th Tony Awards nominations are announced this morning, those honored with recognition will have been selected by a small group of theatre professionals who commit to seeing each and every eligible production that opened during the 2023-2024 season. They are thus able to make informed decisions on what shows, performers and creatives should earn the spotlight of New York theatre’s top honor.
This past season, 60 theatre professionals saw all 36 eligible musicals, play, and revivals and will select the nominees in 26 competitive categories.
Below, see a complete list of the 2023-2024 Tony Awards nominating committee members, including their professions plus past Tony nominations and wins. Some of these nominators may have to recuse themselves prior to voting if they have a conflict, such as if a production that they worked is eligible for a nomination this year.

“Severance” was one of the breakout TV shows of 2022. The Apple TV+ thriller appeared on most critics’ top 10 lists and was nominated for 14 Emmys, including Best Drama Series, and won two, for main title design and music composition. Its cliffhanger ending left fans eager to find out what happens next.
But Season 2 is taking a long time. There have been reports of production complications that slowed down the pace of work, and then the strikes caused delays.
Season 2 is currently filming, and no premiere date has been set. However, during a recent appearance on Roommates – a basketball podcast hosted by New York Knicks players Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart – “Severance” executive producer and director Ben Stiller gave a production update.
“It’s coming soon and we don’t have an actual date but I’ve been working on the second season of it for a long time, since we had a strike,...

The film also stars Patrick J Adams, Jacob Cedergren, John Leguizamo, Eddie Izzard, David Oyelowo, Dianne Wiest, Steve Buscemi, Adriana Barraza, Simon Abkarian and Bob Balaban. Top 10? Hell, the only 10! Well not quite, but damn close! We’ve actually tallied a solid list of ten horror/thrillers that happened to be set on Valentine’s Day itself. Now, some spend the entire day reveling in lovelorn lethality, some merely glance past the February 14th date, but in just about every case, old cupid’s shooting an arrow in the head, if not the heart. Ah hell, you’ve heard enough. Here’s the Top 10 Valentine’s Day Set Horror/Thrillers!
#10. Lovers Lane (1999)
Before Anna Faris was spoofing Scary MOVIEs and wooing the world as The House Bunny, she happened to stroll down Lovers Lane, a listless paint-by-numbers slasher flick about a man who went on an indiscriminate murder spree on Valentine’s Day 13 year prior, only to return to town to stalk and slash the victims’ children, foully disemboweling them with his hook-handed murder weapon. Do you want the good news or the bad news? We’ll go with the bad news first, to tee up the good: Season 2 of Severance isn’t ready yet. Apple TV+’s astonishingly good sci-fi drama – about office workers who have no idea what their jobs actually entail, their memories wiped every time they enter and leave the Lumon building – proved instantly compelling across its first season, ending in one hell of a cliffhanger back in April 2022. And nearly two years later, its follow-up season still isn’t finished, further delayed by the strikes in Hollywood during 2023. But here’s the good news: Season 2 is officially back in production, and racing to the finish line.
Lead actor Adam Scott shared a black-and-white snap on his Instagram showing his character Mark back in the minimalist Lumon offices, breaking into a sprint – and it came with a welcome caption: “Lovely being back at the office.

Like many productions last year, Severance season 2 was brought to a halt due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, but Ben Stiller took to X this morning to announce that filming has finally resumed.

Severance stars Adam Scott as Mark Scout, who leads a team at Lumon Industries “whose employees have undergone a severance procedure, which surgically divides their memories between their work and personal lives. This daring experiment in ‘work-life balance’ is called into question as Mark finds himself at the center of an unraveling mystery that will force him to confront the true nature of his work… and of himself.”
Patricia Arquette, John Turturro, Britt Lower, Zach Cherry, Dichen Lachman, Jen Tullock, Tramell Tillman, Michael Chernus, and Christopher Walken have all returned for the new season, with a few new additions as well.

Severance is “Back to work.” Director and executive producer Ben Stiller took to Instagram this morning to confirm that the Apple TV+ drama series had returned to production after a months-long delay due to the Hollywood strikes.
Stiller’s Instagram post, captioned “Back to work,” features a black-and-white photo of star Adam Scott running through what appears to be a hallway at Lumon Industries.
Severance had paused production on Season 2 in May when the WGA went on strike, which was then followed by the SAG-AFTRA walkout. With both strikes long resolved, production is now back on course.

Chicago – The seemingly middle-of-the-road character actor Bob Balaban has more to his legacy than just a ton of appearances from the 1960s to present in classic films and TV. His Chicago family were pioneers in film exhibition and the movie executive suite during the studio system in the early days of the history of film. It is in his DNA.
The amazing story of Chicago’s Balaban family began soon after they emigrated from Russia. His uncles formed a coalition with Sam Katz to build theaters. The Balaban & Katz brand meant the highest quality movie palaces eventually, the ultimate in the early 20th Century movie experience before television … two prominent theaters still standing are the city-symbolic Chicago Theatre and the still-closed-but-still-standing Uptown Theatre. Bob was born in Chicago, and his father built his favorite theatre icon (as told in the Podtalk below). For the final flourish, his uncle Barney Balaban...

Chicago – Although Ed Begley Jr. has had hundreds of roles in TV and film, he is most likely best known as an activist for environmental and sustainability concerns. He highlighted his latest book, “To the Temple of Tranquility…and Step on It!” at the Fall 2023 Chicago Humanities Festival, and HollywoodChicago.com got the Exclusive Photos and Interview.
Ed Begley Jr. was born in Los Angeles, the son of character actor Ed Begley and Amanda Huff, who he later learned was not his biological mother. After graduating from Los Angeles Valley College, he began his acting career in the late 1960s. After several smaller roles on TV and films, he landed as a regular on the legendary cult show “St. Elsewhere,” as Doctor Victor Ehrlich. After the series ended memorably, he continued his run in TV and film, including as a series regular on “Gary Unmarried” and in Christopher Guest’s “Best in Show.

Sometimes, the reputations of certain movies have been built up so much over the decades that, to an extent, newcomers can't help but come away disappointed when they finally experience it for the very first time. Others, however, live up to every inch of their status as bona fide classics. It's safe to say that "Close Encounters of a Third Kind," director Steven Spielberg's first film about extraterrestrial visitors, belongs firmly in the latter category. Although multiple generations of movie lovers only encountered the 1977 film through their parents, film school courses, or entirely on their own, various re-releases over the years and constant praise from both filmmakers and critics alike have kept "Close Encounters" exactly where it deserves to be -- at the forefront of the conversation about the greatest and most influential movies of all time.

Chicago – Use the word “surely” in any conversation, such as “Surely …” and inevitably you’ll get the answer, “Blah Blah, and don’t call me Shirley.” One of a trio that came up with that famous riposte, David Zucker, was at the Chicago Humanities Festival as co-author of “Surely you Can’t be Serious: The True Story of Airplane!”
The book was written with the other two members of the legendary movie comedy creators nicknamed Zaz … for (David) Zucker, (Jim) Abrahams and (Jerry) Zucker. In 1980, the trio wrote and directed one of the most influential comedy movies of their generation, the deliciously funny farce “Airplane!,” forever changing comic sensibilities and satire. The book is a look back to a different time and place in American entertainment, and David Zucker appeared on its behalf as part of the ongoing Fall Chicago Humanities Festival on October 21st, 2023.

Judy Balaban, the daughter of a longtime studio mogul who dated Montgomery Clift and Merv Griffin, married Tony Franciosa and served as one of Grace Kelly’s bridesmaids at her wedding to Prince Rainier of Monaco, has died. She was 91.
Balaban died Thursday night in a hospital in Los Angeles, her friend, author and documentary filmmaker Cari Beauchamp, told The Hollywood Reporter.
Balaban was a champion for civil rights, serving on the board of directors for the ACLU of Southern California for decades.
In a 2010 piece for Vanity Fair that she and Beauchamp co-wrote, Balaban described using LSD (then legal) as a form of therapy in the early 1960s when her good friends Cary Grant and his third wife, Betsy Drake, were using it, too.
“What I had with Cary and Betsy was a kind of soul-baringness that the culture didn’t start to deal with until years later,” she says in the story.

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: Is That a Meat Cleaver in Your Pocket — or Are My Parents Just Happy to See Me?
“What were they before they were leftovers?” That’s the dramatic meat hook on which Bob Balaban hangs his giddily middling 1989 horror comedy “Parents,” a surrealist satire set in 1950s suburbia, best likened to a chunky jello mold filled with human toes. I’ll admit, I wouldn’t serve cannibalism cinema this underbaked to mixed company; let alone the hubby’s new boss and his one-scene-having wife. But for the IndieWire After Dark family during ’80s Week,...

The science-fiction show Severance, developed by Dan Erickson and directed by Ben Stiller and Aoife McArdle, has been taking the globe by wildfire since its release on the online streaming service Apple TV Plus in the year 2022.
Severance, which is quite similar to Black Mirror and The Office, depicts the plot of Lumon Industries, a biotech business. The organization has devised an audacious new technique that will result in the ideal work-life balance.
It’s called “severance,” since it’s a procedure that separates a staff member’s personal emotions from their work recollections. The TV show portrays the four employees — Mark, Helly, Irving, and Dylan — who have had an operation as they learn to live as basically two separate persons.
Lumon, on the other hand, appears to have a hidden motivation for this experiment,...

While the 1970s was known as a wild, bold, experimental time in modern cinema—which extended to all genres, including science fiction—the 1980s were best known for… well, we don’t know what, exactly. The rise of the erotic thriller, the action superstar, and cookie-cutter safe high-concept star vehicles, perhaps? As for sci-fi, the decade was marked by both undisputed blockbusters, including the Star Wars and Star Trek sequels, Aliens, and E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, as well as some inarguable classics like The Thing, Tron, and Blade Runner. Intriguingly, the more risky ones needed years to find their audience and critical acclaim.
At the same time, sci-fi began to rely less on literary adaptations of the previous decade and more on crossing its streams with other genres, like horror, the Western, and the action thriller—making somewhat of a turn away from the idea-driven films that had come before.

When Midnight Cowboy came out in 1969, Miami Herald critic John Huddy heralded its arrival with a string of superlatives: “Staggering, shattering, heartbreaking, hilarious, tragic, raw and absurd.”
Over the years, the ranks of its admirers has only grown, among them documentary filmmaker Nancy Buirski.
“I remember feeling that it was a really radical film,” recalls Buirski, who first saw Midnight Cowboy sometime after its original release. “It felt different from anything I had seen… It was like a gut punch.”
Director Nancy Buirski
Buirski’s documentary Desperate Souls, Dark City and the Legend of Midnight Cowboy, now playing in limited release in New York, Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, Detroit and other cities, digs into the loam that produced such a bleak yet beautiful flower of a film. It turns out Bill Murray is part of Wes Anderson’s “Asteroid City.” Sort of.
As revealed by The New Yorker on Thursday, Murray actually shot promo material for Anderson’s latest feature, playing an actor starring as a fictional industrial executive in a role that was cut out of the finished production within the actual production.
Confused? “Asteroid City” “has a framing device, in which a troupe of actors is performing a play that inexplicably becomes the movie we’re watching,” as The New Yorker explained. So with that in mind, Murray plays an actor named Tab Whitney who was cast in the play-within-the-movie as Jock Larkings, the head of the Larkings Corporation, an organization that factors into the story. (Bob Balaban plays a Larkings executive in the actual film.) But Whitney’s part was cut from the finished product, much like Murray’s role. The “Rushmore” star, who...

Wes Anderson films have a unique look and tone. They are visually stunning with immaculate detail given to costumes and production design. That uniqueness extends to his dialogue, which demands something different from his actors.

Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson are loving grandparenthood. What’s more, the pair know exactly how to get the most out of enjoying time with their grandchildren.
The happy couple walked the carpet at the premiere of Wes Anderson’s new film “Asteroid City” at Alice Tully Hall in New York City on Tuesday, and the pair addressed the joys of spending time with their grandkids.
“All you gotta do is love those little brats and they’re better than TV,” Tom said, beaming, before quickly adding, “They’re not little brats, they’re extraordinary young women.”
“They are extraordinary young women,” Rita added with a laugh.
Tom is a father of four — he and Wilson share sons Chet, 32, and Truman 27, while Hanks is also father to son Colin, 45, and daughter Elizabeth, 41, from his previous marriage. Colin, meanwhile, is father to two daughters, Olivia and Charlotte, while Chet has one daughter,...

A group of SAG-AFTRA members, including Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Jean Smart and Bob Balaban, has released a video urging their fellow performers to approve the strike authorization that’s currently out for a vote of the guild’s eligible members.
The vote comes in advance of the guild’s upcoming negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, which are set to start on June 7. A strike, if it comes to that, could not start before June 30, when the guild’s current contract expires.
The Directors Guild, meanwhile, is currently in negotiations with the AMPTP. Their contract also expires on June 30, and the Writers Guild has been on strike for 29 days.
“I’m asking you to join me in voting ‘yes’ on the strike authorization,” Louis-Dreyfus says on the video.

The Story: Nine years after the disappearance of astronaut Dave Bowman (Keir Dullea), Discovery One mission overseer, Heywood Floyd (Roy Scheider) is given the opportunity to take part in a joint U.S-u.S.S.R mission to see what went wrong. There’s only one problem – the two countries are on the cusp of nuclear war, and tension between the American and Soviet teams looks to unmoor an already impossible mission.
The Players: Starring: Roy Scheider, Helen Mirren, John Lithgow, Bob Balaban and Keir Dullea. Music by David Shire. Written and directed by Peter Hyams.
The History: Crafting a sequel to Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey sounds like a fool’s errand. Being that it’s one of the most acclaimed films ever made, in order to be judged any kind of success the sequel would have to be some kind of masterpiece. In 1984, director Peter Hyams,...

It’s a testament to Jeffrey Wright’s onscreen presence that he is now the longest-serving Felix Leiter — an often-thankless part that’s perhaps the 007-universe equivalent of a Star Trek redshirt — in the entire James Bond franchise. But, then, Wright has a charismatic gravitas that has served him well in the years since Basquiat, an experimental portrait of the ill-fated New York graffiti artist, first launched him in 1996. Emmy-nominated for his stint in HBO’s Westworld, he comes to Cannes with his second Wes Anderson hook-up, Asteroid City, after stealing the show in The French Dispatch as food writer Roebuck Wright.
Deadline: Wes Anderson’s films are always shrouded in secrecy, but what can you say about Asteroid City?
Jeffrey Wright: Well, it’s more Wes Anderson [laughs]. It’s set in a fictional town in the American West of 1955, or at least it was 1955 when last I understood it to be.

Using actors to bring to life story elements within documentary film is becoming a more widespread practice, if one that’s still viewed with skepticism by some purists.
The films of Robert Greene spring to mind – Kate Plays Christine and Procession, for instance – and Kitty Green’s Casting JonBenet. Errol Morris cast Peter Sarsgaard, Tim Blake Nelson, Bob Balaban and other stars to dramatize extended sequences in Wormwood, and famously used actors in the critical murder scene reenactment in the The Thin Blue Line.
The technique achieves a new level of artistry and organic relevance in Kaouther Ben Hania’s documentary Four Daughters (Les Filles d’Olfa), which premiered tonight in competition at the Cannes Film Festival. The Tunisian director cast actresses to play Olfa Hamrouni and her two eldest daughters, Rahma and Ghofrane, who as teenagers abruptly disappeared from the family home after becoming attached to radical Islamist ideology. "Severance" season two seems to have hit another snag. Production on the show's next installment has screeched to a halt in New York amid the ongoing writers' strike, Deadline reported on May 8.
Just a few days earlier, star Zach Cherry had confirmed that filming was in progress and said "things have been going good" in a May 4 interview with Entertainment Tonight. While Cherry didn't give away much information at the time, he said that when reading the second season's script, "My reaction was the same as my reaction was to the first script in season one, which is, 'This is good!'"
"Severance" season two may have already experienced some setbacks, as in late April, Puck News reported that it had been delayed partly due to animosity between showrunners Dan Erickson and Mark Friedman. Cannibalism has emerged as the genre du jour in horror. With the success of last year’s Fresh and Bones and All as well as the second season of Yellowjackets finally digging into the human flesh, everyone seems to be exploring this taboo topic. From nightmare survival scenarios to narcissistic serial killers, these films follow humans or humanoid monsters who consume human flesh in one way or another. Some butcher and cook the meat, while others eat it from the bone, but all cannibal films offer a window into a world of depravity and a fascinating blend of horror and revulsion. We not only fear being eaten ourselves, but we often find ourselves imagining what the meat would taste like should we dare (or be forced) to take a bite.
Films about cannibals may seem like a rare delicacy, but a closer look reveals that the pickens are not so slim.

The excitement and buzz continues to build for “The Little Mermaid.”
A source tells me that director Rob Marshall and husband, producer John DeLuca, hosted a private screening of Disney’s live adaptation of the 1989 animated classic on Sunday night at New York’s Whitby Hotel.
The guest list of about 80 people included Emily Blunt and John Krasinski, Matt Damon and his family, Emily Mortimer, Ben Platt and his “Parade” co-star Micaela Diamond, Marc Shaiman, Scott Wittman, Bob Balaban and Lynn Grossman, Diane and Brian Sutherland, and Scott Ellis. The film’s composer Alan Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda, who co-wrote three new songs for the movie, were also there.
I’m told the star-studded audience applauded after each musical number and continued to rave during a post-screening reception. Marshall joked that the evening’s torrential downpour was fitting because it felt like they were truly “under the sea.”

This episode of the Horror TV Shows We Miss video series was Written and Narrated by Niki Minter, Edited by Adam Walton, Produced by John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian. Here’s the text of the video script:
I think 1991 shaped my life before I even realized it did. Aeon Flux, Pete & Pete, Clarissa Explains It All, Liquid Television, The Addams Family, People Under the Stairs, Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead, and of course, Eerie, Indiana.
All those shows and movies I just mentioned, I can still enjoy just the same as I did then. A few of them actually get repeat viewings throughout the year. There was something cool about these shows made for kids and teens around this time– they weren’t dumbing it down. Kids felt like they were watching something that they could experience for themselves– it was something that felt real. These...

80 for Brady is a comedy starring Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Rita Moreno and Sally Field, and with Tom Brady as himself. It is directed by Kyle Marvin, and is written by Sarah Haskins and Emily Halpern.
80 for Brady is a nice, pleasant and funny movie about rather mature women in a sports movie with the great star Tom Brady as a big attraction.
A film built upon an excellent casting that manages not to displease anyone, but nor will it make them fall in love with it, either.
Movie Review
As fun, entertaining and enjoyable as a movie can be that was created for fans of Tom Brady (who plays his part well and this guy has a future beyond the stadiums) and the four wonderful stars as likeable, charming and nice to play characters.
Little else, because it is not a film that aspires to anything else...
