For Eddie Murphy, returning to his iconic Beverly Hills Cop role four decades after the original 1984 movie wasn’t as easy physically.
The actor, 63, opened up about reprising his character, Detroit detective Axel Foley, in the upcoming Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, during an appearance on the Today show Tuesday.
“It felt like old man,” Murphy quipped to Al Roker. “I did Beverly Hills Cop when I was 21, and I’m 63 now.”
He continued, “Now, I would rather not do any stunts. We were shooting something and the director said, ‘I want you to come out of this place and run down those steps.’ After we shot and he’s like, ‘Can you come down with more urgency? Faster?’ And I was like, ‘No!'”

James Brown Wanted Eddie Murphy to Play Him in a Biopic After ‘SNL’ Celebrity Hot Tub Sketch | Video
James Brown liked Eddie Murphy’s celebrity hot tub skit on “Saturday Night Live” so much that he suggested the comedian play him in a biopic.
Murphy explained to Jimmy Fallon on “The Tonight Show” Monday – after being shown a photo of him, Brown, Jesse Jackson and Rev. Al Sharpton – that the singer approached him after the two worked together on a project and said Murphy should help him tell his life story by playing him in a movie.
“He came up to me afterward and was like, ‘You should do my life story,'” Murphy said, falling into an impression of Brown. “I was like, ‘James, wouldn’t people be laughing?’ And he said, ‘They ain’t going to laugh if you do it serious. People are going to know that you’re serious.'”

“Saturday Night Live” creator Lorne Michaels continued to shoot down retirement rumors as he readies the NBC sketch comedy series for its upcoming 50th season. He told the New York Times in a new interview: “I’m going to do it as long as I feel I can do it. But I rely on other people and always have.”
Michaels also reflected on the challenges that come with being an “SNL” cast member. Through the show, he has helped launch the careers of dozens of comedy superstars, including Eddie Murphy, Will Ferrell and Tina Fey.
“If you were the funniest kid in the class, or your school, and then you’re working professionally and everyone else in the room is that,” he said. “It can be upsetting or can be really stimulating.”
“No one can handle the fame,” Michaels added. “Generally, we’re more tolerant of it, but you know...

Jimmy Fallon pointed out a crazy fact about Beverly Hills Cop when Eddie Murphy stopped by last night. When the movie debuted in 1984, it was number one at the box office for 14 weeks. Fourteen weeks! Forty years later, it’s Wtf news when a movie like Barbie manages to hold the top spot for a month. Fourteen weeks? That’s practically a trimester. Did Murphy understand what a monster hit he had on his hands while making the film?
Murphy did not — and neither did anyone else associated with the movie. In fact, Murphy said, a script supervisor on the film “wanted to take an alias. She took an alias. She didn’t want to get a screen credit. It was like, ‘I don’t want anybody to know I had anything with this movie.’”

‘Pimp My Ride’ Team Launching Netflix Series ‘Resurrected Rides’ With Chris Redd as Host (Exclusive)
“Pimp My Ride” is back … sort of. Actor and comedian Chris Redd is set to host Netflix’s new motor makeover series “Resurrected Rides,” which will premiere on July 24. The series will feature eight 40-minute episodes.
Rick Hurvitz, who co-created “Pimp My Ride,” which aired on MTV from 2004 to 2007, serves as an executive producer on the series, along with Brandon Killion, Ari Shofet and Mike Odair.
Per the official logline, “Resurrected Rides” is “an entirely new motor makeover series for the modern age,” with Redd and his team of mechanics helping “deserving owners transform their beloved beaters into roadworthy masterpieces.”
“We took the spirit and knowledge from the original and reimagined it with a hilarious host, brand new cast, plus the eye-popping technology and culture of today,” says Hurvitz. Shofet adds, “This is an aspirational and wish-fulfillment show with a comedic lens, and we’re excited to give deserving folks a mind-blowing automotive makeover.

If there’s one thing we’ve learned about Chris Williams, it’s that drama follows him wherever he goes.
It’s been a while since the Married at First Sight star has been on our radar. In recent months, he took a social media hiatus — something he does quite often.
However, he recently popped up with a mugshot and an interesting story about getting locked up.
The Atlanta native is not someone we’ll forget anytime soon, as he quickly solidified himself as one of the most hated husbands in the show’s history.
The experts matched him with Paige Banks and from the moment they tied the knot, it was one shocking revelation after another.
Mafs viewers were relieved when the duo finally parted ways, but Season 12 tops the list as one of the most memorable and jaw-dropping, thanks to Chris.

Not every comedy series can achieve the level of satirical excellence that The Simpsons once enjoyed — especially not those shows made by Seth MacFarlane.
Television has always played an important role within the universe of The Simpsons. After all, the sadly discontinued intro sequence famously ends with Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie all crowding together on the couch to watch TV together before being sucked into a black hole, turning into butterflies or getting crushed to death by Rick and Morty. And, since the show prided itself on holding up a playful, yellow, four-fingered mirror to American society and pop culture, it inevitably had to playfully jab the other comedies on TV that were inferior to what Matt Groening and his writers had cooking.

There are four credited screenwriters on Leonard Nimoy's 1986 time travel comedy "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home." Steve Meerson and Peter Krikes were hired together to write the film and they followed all the appropriate studio mandates, careful to write a role specifically for Eddie Murphy -- he had expressed interest in appearing -- and to beef up Admiral Kirk's role to appease a snippy William Shatner. Meerson and Krikes met with Nimoy and producer Harve Bennett early in production to bang out a story, and the quartet ultimately invented the plot: the Enterprise crew would travel back in time to the present day to retrieve a pair of humpback whale, a species that is extinct in the 23rd century. They must do this to appease a mysterious space probe that is draining the Earth's oceans.

When you’re making the fourth film in a long-running franchise, it can be hard to keep things funny and fresh. For Taylour Paige, though, her objective in taking on the role of estranged daughter to Eddie Murphy’s Axel Foley in the latest installment of the “Beverly Hills Cop” series was to keep things light and produce entertainment that does the same for others. Speaking to Empire for a recent profile, Paige said desire comes from how she sees the world right now.

In the opening section of Outstanding: A Comedy Revolution, you might be forgiven for thinking this is an extended Pride Month promo to breathe new life into Netflix’s 2022 special, Stand Out: An LGBTQ+ Celebration. But in a Q&a following the rousingly received opening-night screening at the Provincetown Film Festival, director Page Hurwitz clarified the chicken-and-the-egg situation, explaining that she produced the event at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles, which assembled 22 prominent queer comics on the same bill, as a foundational building block for this documentary surveying the rich history of LGBTQ+ comedians.

“Comedy is what takes us away from all the pain and all the hurt and all the turmoil that goes on in life. It takes us away from that, even if only for a brief second, a brief moment.” Maybe you wouldn’t expect this level of depth from a man who’s made a career of being silly. Something else you might not expect? Even 30 years into his comedy career, he was still possessed by a nervous energy before getting on the stage for his 2016 special. So much of what has made Martin Lawrence successful is his ability to channel that nervous energy into something great and, more importantly, something funny.
But what drives that energy? For Martin, it may be the very pain, hurt, and turmoil he’s trying to help us escape. Despite his success, Martin’s life has been marked by challenges, from a difficult childhood to high-profile controversies.

Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F's new blood breaks down her Hollywood past and future.

Will Smith became embroiled in a controversy after he slapped comedian Chris Rock at the Oscars ceremony in 2022. After Rock joked about Jada Pinkett-Smith, the Bad Boys star went up the stage to give him a slap and then exclaimed profanities. The incident resulted in Smith resigning from the Academy and being banned from the ceremony.
The two have addressed the incident on multiple occasions and Smith reportedly even apologized to Rock publicly. While the two may now have a history of disagreement, they may agree on one opinion. Smith recently agreed with Martin Lawrence on Richard Pryor being one of the best stand-up comics of all time, which Rock too has expressed on multiple occasions.

Before Marvel movies would fill slots on a schedule, Jerry Bruckheimer productions did, and still do.
Similar to 2003 when the blockbuster producer had Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, Bad Boys II, Veronica Guerin and Kangaroo Jack on the calendar, Bruckheimer counts a four feature-spree this spring and summer with Lionsgate’s The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, his highest test movie ever in Disney’s Young Woman and the Sea, Netflix’s upcoming July event title Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F and this last weekend’s Bad Boys: Ride or Die which revived a dull summer movie season with a $105M global opening, beating expectations and pulling in a diverse audience that was 70% combined for Black and Latino/Hispanic moviegoers. Through yesterday, Bad Boys: Ride or Die stands at $120M global.
Bad Boys: Ride or Die reps the 28th No. 1 opening for the $14.06 billion grossing, Oscar nominated producer.

Ahead of the film’s release in July, Netflix releases a new clip featuring Eddie Murphy, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and helicopter piloting that would make Tom Cruise wince.
Axel Foley is returning to our screens this summer as Netflix gets ready to release the fourth film in the legendary action comedy film series, titled Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. Helmed by Mark Molloy, the film brings Eddie Murphy back in one of his most iconic roles and we were treated to a full trailer just last month.
Netflix is backing this one, meaning that the film is headed straight to the small screen. Still, if this newly-released clip is anything to go by, the action will still be outsized.

In a sneak peek clip for Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, Eddie Murphy’s Axel Foley hijacks a helicopter to escape a deadly threat. As Foley and new partner Bobby Abbott (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) race to the roof, Foley demands that Abbott, a former helicopter pilot, steer the chopper off the platform.
“Faster! Shit, this ain’t Spirit Airlines,” Foley says in the teaser. “Let’s go! Let’s go! This shit is supposed to be like riding a bike! You’re suppose to get right in there and know how to do this shit.

The upcoming Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F is being anticipated with anxious eyes as Eddie Murphy returns to his beloved role of Axel Foley, which solidified his status as an A-list star in 1984. It’s seemingly a delicate thing to get right as the nature and quality of Eddie’s movies (and comedy in general) has evolved over time. Even with a director like John Landis, for many, Beverly Hills Cop III just didn’t quite land. While there are a lot of elements in place for this fourth entry, the many stop/starts and years stewing in development hell and a director who hasn’t yet established himself can naturally make fans a bit antsy.

It’s really difficult to imagine a world where “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” is a good film. Many of the legacy sequels that have been released in recent years are subpar, to put it nicely. Not only that, but ‘Axel F’ is coming to Netflix, which doesn’t have the best track record with original films. Then you have the fact that Eddie Murphy films are very much hit or miss.

After more than three decades since the third installment’s release, it seems the beloved fan-favorite Axel Foley is returning to the big screens with the soon-to-be-released fourth installment, which has been titled Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. And returning as him to once again lead the franchise is none other than Eddie Murphy, the actor who iconically embodied this character in the first three movies.

While the hype around this fourth film was already as great as ever, Murphy seems to have further heightened the excitement surrounding it with the release of the presumed masterpiece’s first clip starring him alongside Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s Bobby Abbott. And, as expected, Murphy putting his detective cap back on in this clip is enough to make even Bad Boy Will Smith quake in his boots.

“Let’s face it, I had a bad script,” director Michael Bay said on the commentary track of his debut feature film, Bad Boys. Bay isn’t wrong. Bad Boys relies on buddy comedy tropes already established in 1974’s Freebie and the Bean and 1982’s 48 Hrs., complete with nonsense plot points. “But I had real comic talent in my two stars.” Bay of course means Martin Lawrence and Will Smith. Drawn from the popular sitcoms Martin and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Lawrence and Smith saved the movie from the clunky script with their easy chemistry and comic timing.
At one point, however, Bad Boys had two very different stars in mind with a comic chemistry unlike that of Lawrence and Smith.

By 1984, films like “Jaws” (1975), “Star Wars” (1977) “Raiders of the Lost Ark” (1981) and “E.T.” (1982) had firmly established the summer blockbuster craze, with Steven Spielberg productions leading the way. On June 8, 1984, two films were released simultaneously that continued the summer blockbuster trend, while also establishing new trends with their combination of horror/comedy and fresh marketing and merchandising strategies. Unsurprisingly, one film was produced by Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment, and his “Gremlins” battled for the number one box office spot with familiar faces from “Saturday Night Live” who were now “Ghostbusters.” Their quotable scripts and at-the-time unique blend of humor and gore have had long-lasting effects on the film industry and on pop culture that continue to resonate four decades later. Read on for more about the 40-year anniversary of both “Gremlins” and “Ghostbusters.”

1984 was a downright magical year at the movies. The number of titles released in that fateful year that have become classics is downright staggering. Wes Craven's influential horror classic "A Nightmare on Elm Street," Kevin Bacon's breakout hit "Footloose," James Cameron's masterwork "The Terminator," Steven Spielberg's second Indiana Jones adventure "Temple of Doom," and Eddie Murphy's ridiculously huge blockbuster "Beverly Hills Cop." That's truly just scratching the surface. But 40 years ago in the summer of '84, two all-time cinematic classics premiered on the very same weekend.

Few actors have reached the level of fame Will Smith has in his astonishing career. From his early days in sitcoms like The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air to blockbuster hits like Men in Black, Smith has come a long way. However, it took a long time for him to get his efforts recognized, as he won his only Oscar in 2022 in his decades-long career.

“Freeze mother bitches!” What’s the all-time best buddy cop movie ever made? 48 Hrs? Lethal Weapon? Beverly Hills Cop? Rush Hour? The Nice Guys? In terms of story and dramatic action, any one of these titles warrants serious consideration. But when it comes to the onscreen rapport and natural chemistry between two stars in a buddy cop movie, it’s hard to beat 1995’s Bad Boys – the directorial debut of the divisive filmmaker Michael Bay. Sure, Bay has earned a rightful rep as a bold and boisterous music-video director turned filmmaker who favors big, dumb, pyrotechnic excesses over quality cinematic storytelling.
However, Bay does deserve at least a modicum of credit for pairing the comedic talents of Will Smith and Martin Lawrence together as Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett – two immensely likable Miami narcotics officers who trade crackling banter and witty one-liners whose onscreen partnership drives the engagement and entertainment level.

The Tribeca Festival started in the shadow of Sept. 11, as founders Robert De Niro, his longtime collaborator Jane Rosenthal and real estate investor Craig Hatkoff (at the time married to Rosenthal) attempted to bring commerce and culture back to Lower Manhattan.
In the years since, it has exploded in popularity and importance, with major film premieres and fine discoveries playing every year — now with even more to see and experience.
“There’s always challenges,” Rosenthal said about putting on a festival of the size and complexity of Tribeca. “We were the first festival that came out of Covid. It was great. There’s always challenges, always challenges.”
This year Tribeca is embellished with something else – a complementary festival called De Niro Con, which celebrates the life and career of the Tribeca cofounder that coincides with his 80th birthday. There will be special screenings, conversations and live events.
