The Tony Awards Administration Committee met for the third time during the 2023-2024 Broadway season on April 19, to discuss eligibility of 8 productions for the 77th Annual Tony Awards in 2024.
They discussed eight productions: “Days of Wine and Roses,” “Doubt,” “The Notebook,” “An Enemy of the People,” “Water for Elephants,” “The Who’s Tommy,” “The Outsiders” and “Lempicka.” The group also met during the winter to discuss late fall and winter openings, but those determinations were not made public until now. Those shows include: “I Need That,” “Harmony,” “Spamalot,” “How to Dance in Ohio,” “Appropriate” and “Prayer for the French Republic.”
The most notable ruling is that “Appropriate” will compete as a revival. The hit play from Branden Jacobs-Jenkins has never been seen on Broadway before this season, but previously enjoyed a successful Off-Broadway run with a different director and cast. Since it is the play’s Broadway debut, Jacobs-Jenkins will appear...

The smug, arrogant Comic Book Guy (Hank Azaria), proprietor of the Android's Dungeon, first appeared in the "The Simpsons" episode "Three Men and a Comic Book". In the episode, he sold a rare and expensive copy of "Radioactive Man" #1 to the young collectors Bart (Nancy Cartwright), Milhouse (Pamela Hayden), and Martin (Russi Taylor). The comic cost $100 -- a fortune to the three young boys -- and they had to pool their money to make the sacred purchase.
The trio, however, never decided who would serve as the comic book's official caretaker, and they immediately became suspicious that one of them was angling to steal it from the other two. A "Treasure of the Sierra Madre" drama slowly unfolds. The Comic Book Guy, having seen the boys' folly beforehand, became a Mephistophelean figure, cackling at his customers' hubris.

In 1977, aspiring cartoonist Matt Groening moved from his hometown of Portland, Oregon to Los Angeles with dreams of becoming a writer. Like most people who move to Los Angeles with dreams of becoming a writer, he took on some of the most menial jobs imaginable. Groening worked in a sewage treatment plant, as a dishwasher, and as a waiter. All the while, Groening worked on what would become his signature creation, the "Life in Hell" comic strip.
Groening would leave "Life in Hell" comics in a small corner of Licorice Pizza, the celebrated Los Angeles record store where he occasionally worked. It was an embittered strip about modern life, a harsh critique of life, love, school, and work. Groening attacked everything the establishment celebrated as normal and good, finding nothing but misery in the real world.
"Life in Hell" was picked up by Wet Magazine and, later the Los Angeles Reader.

In the "The Simpsons" episode "Flaming Moe's, the put-upon bartender Moe Szyslak (Hank Azaria) finds his bar struggling to stay afloat in the wake of increased job satisfaction and family bliss in the city. Homer (Dan Castellaneta) suggests Moe try a new cocktail. Homer then reveals the recipe for a cough syrup-infused drink — the Flaming Homer — that becomes more flavorful after you set it on fire. Moe mixes one and it's an instant hit. Moe also instantly claims credit for inventing the drink, much to Homer's consternation.
The redubbed Flaming Moe is a huge success, and Moe's dive bar quickly grow into a massive event space where Aerosmith performs. Eventually Homer, fed up with not receiving any credit or money, reveals the secret ingredients and Moe's quickly returns to being a dive.

While plans to further TriStar’s Godzilla franchise on the big screen fell through, the animated sequel turned out to be a great alternative. Godzilla: The Series debuted mere months after the 1998 film was released, and it went on to become a popular part of Fox Kids’ Saturday morning programming. And although this continuation had a limited lifespan of just two seasons, it still managed to do the impossible and redeem Roland Emmerich’s widely disliked adaptation.
Similar to Ultra Q, Godzilla: The Series saw Dr. Niko “Nick” Tatopoulos leading a specialized team — Humanitarian Environmental Analysis Team, or H.E.A.T. for short — in the struggle against the giant and disruptive creatures (often referred to as “mutants”) who have begun to appear all across the globe. Aiding them was the lone, surviving offspring of Godzilla teased at the end of the film. And to ensure the juvenile Godzilla stood...

The character of Dr. Marvin Monroe (Harry Shearer) first appeared in the "The Simpsons" episode "There's No Disgrace Like Home". He would show up during the show's early seasons when Homer (Dan Castellaneta) was preoccupied with his family's perceived normal-ness. Homer looked at his home and saw the suburban ideals of a nuclear family slowly exploding. To combat this, Homer pawned the family TV -- an object he saw as problematic anyway -- and bought therapy sessions with Dr. Marvin Monroe, a family psychiatrist who promised "family bliss or double your money back." It seems the Simpsons were so dysfunctional that even Dr. Monroe couldn't cure them (a shock therapy session goes horribly awry).
Dr. Monroe typically appeared whenever "The Simpsons" required the word of a psychiatric specialist to aid in plot points. He was one of the show's many regular supporting characters, relegated to the background. However, the character...

In the "The Simpsons" episode "Future-Drama", Bart (Nancy Cartwright) and Lisa (Yeardley Smith) visit the mad scientist Professor Frink (Hank Azaria) to get a glimpse into their future. Frink has invented a future-predicting computer, and the Simpson children ask to see what they might look like as teenagers. In the year 2013, Bart is dating a cool skateboarder named Jenda (Amy Poehler) and Lisa, on her way to medical school, has had an on-again-off-again relationship with Milhouse (Pamela Hayden). Marge has been dating Krusty the Clown (Dan Castellaneta) after leaving Homer for committing a flagrant financial crime.
To ensure the episode is sufficiently surreal, there is a scene wherein the teenage Bart and the older Homer (Castellaneta) pass through a quantum tunnel and emerge on the other side with a robot they mysteriously accumulated. The robot is Bender (John Dimaggio), the drunken droid from Matt Groening's "Futurama," a series that,...

Al Pacino has worked very hard to craft a reputation in Hollywood that very few have managed to get. Having starred in more masterpieces than perhaps anyone in the history of cinema, he is one of the greatest actors of all time. This title, of course, did not come easy, as the actor is known for having some very unique habits that help him get into the minds of his characters.
Al Pacino in Scarface
He is known for being very erratic and unpredictable when put in front of a camera. So much so, that no take will ever be the same with Pacino. His co-star in his 1995 film, Heat, Hank Azaria, revealed exactly this in a recent post. The actor revealed that the iconic scene of him being yelled at by Al Pacino was unscripted.

Sorry About Your Wife, Reuben: Filmmaker John Hamburg Looks Back on 20 Years with ‘Along Came Polly’
It’s been 20 years since senior Model Un delegate Polly Prince wandered back into the life of unlucky-in-love insurance adjuster Reuben Feffer.
Jennifer Aniston charmed the pants off Ben Stiller’s persnickety everyman as the chaotically seductive title character in “Along Came Polly”: filmmaker John Hamburg’s raunchy odd coupling about a New Yorker who catches his wife (a perfectly loath-able Debra Messing) cheating on him with a scuba instructor (a hysterical and jacked Hank Azaria) during their tropical honeymoon. Back in the city, with the misguided help of his friend and former child star Sandy Lyle (the late Philip Seymour Hoffman at his funniest), Reuben runs into blast from the past Polly, who may or may not be the real love of his life, just two weeks later.

In 1997, the Screen Actors Guild award for best ensemble in a motion picture was expected to go to a “serious” nominee like The English Patient (which would go on to win the best picture Oscar), Sling Blade or Marvin’s Room (boasting a cast including Meryl Streep and Leonardo DiCaprio). But The Birdcage swooped in for a surprise win.
Producer-director Mike Nichols and writer Elaine May had adapted the film from the French stage farce La Cage Aux Folles, moving the story of a gay couple who own a nightclub in Saint-Tropez to Miami, where Robin Williams and Nathan Lane, as Armand and Albert Goldman, become increasingly stressed out when Armand’s son, Val (Dan Futterman), comes to visit with his fiancée (Calista Flockhart) and her ultraconservative parents. The cast is rounded out by Hank Azaria as the Goldmans’ housekeeper, Christine Baranski as Val’s mother and Gene Hackman and Dianne Wiest as Republican Sen.

Matthew Perry died from the “acute effects of ketamine,” the Los Angeles medical examiner announced Friday.
According to the autopsy report obtained by Rolling Stone, the “high levels of ketamine” found in Perry’s blood at the time of his death likely resulted in the Friends actor lapsing “into unconsciousness,” which in turn caused him to drown. Coronary artery disease and buprenorphine effects were also cited as contributing conditions in Perry’s death at the age of 54.

Reina Hardesty (The Secret Art of Human Flight) has joined the cast of Prime Video’s Butterfly opposite Daniel Dae Kim.
Hardesty will portray Rebecca, a charismatic, unpredictable assassin. Orphaned (or so she thought) at the age of 13, she learned to cope with her pain and loneliness by distancing herself from difficult emotions, applying a mental tourniquet to the part of her that held love and empathy. Over time, she’s developed a hard shell, which is a very useful trait in her line of work. But Rebecca isn’t a grizzled, stoic hitman. She’s shiny and charming and fun to watch, leaping to life with every hit of adrenaline.
The six-episode series is described as a character-driven spy thriller that explores complex family dynamics within the treacherous world of global espionage. Butterfly is based on the Boom! Studios graphic novel series created by Arash Amel, written by Amel and Marguerite Bennett,...

“Just think,” Sir Lancelot (Taran Killam) muses as he celebrates his gay wedding at the end of Monty Python’s Spamalot. “In a thousand-and-eighteen years time, this will still be controversial.” Killam puts special emphasis on the “eighteen,” an addition to the script that nods to the supposed ways in which Spamalot remains relevant nearly two decades after the Tony-winning musical adaptation of Terry Jones and Terry Gilliam’s 1975 film Monty Python and the Holy Grail tore up the 2004-2005 Broadway season.
The construction of the joke suggests that not much has changed—either for good or ill—in the past decades. That’s hardly true, because when Hank Azaria delivered the punchline in 2005, gay marriage wouldn’t be legalized in New York State for another six years. It’s surprising how much of Spamalot’s humor, especially the gay jokes, now feels rooted in an earlier time. Even peppered...

Hank Azaria, who recently went public with his thanks to his friend, the late Matthew Perry, for helping him get sober in 2006, has joined the producing team – along with Jason Biggs and Edie Falco – of The White Chip, an upcoming Off Broadway “recovery comedy” by Sean Daniels.
Also announced today was the cast additions of Crystal Dickinson (Clybourne Park) and Jason Tam (A Chorus Line), who join the previously announced Joe Tapper (You Can’t Take It With You).
“We are so happy to welcome new producers and cast members to our production of Sean’s essential, life-saving play,” said producer Annaleigh Ashford in a statement. “Hank, Jason and Edie, all extraordinary artists, have so selflessly shared their stories of recovery with the public, so to have them join us in amplifying this play is a true honor. We are over the moon, too, that Crystal and Jason – both powerhouse talents – will join Joe onstage.

The Vista Theatre hosted two premieres on Tuesday night — the first was for Thanksgiving, Eli Roth’s latest horror offering based on the fake trailer he created for the 2007 film Grindhouse. The second was for the movie house itself, which held its first premiere since Quentin Tarantino purchased the single-screen theater in 2021 and reopened it this past weekend.
Roth shared what it meant that his film was the first premiere at his close friend’s theater, noting, “It’s a really meaningful moment. Quentin’s been telling me about the Vista for years, and he bought it and he’s been refurbishing it. It’s going to be 35 [mm] only, and then when the timing worked out that the first movie was going to be Thanksgiving, I just thought, this is poetic. This is so beautiful. Only Quentin could do this; he’s more than a friend, he’s a brother...

Homer Simpson has been strangling Bart for over thirty years, and despite rumours to the contrary, he’ll keep doing it. An odd thing to say about child abuse, but here we are.
A recent episode of The Simpsons suggested that Homer’s days of strangling Bart had come to an end. In the episode McMansion & Wife, which aired on October 22nd, Homer shakes the hand of his new neighbour, who comments that Homer had “quite a grip” when they shook hands. “See, Marge, strangling the boy has paid off,” Homer said to his wife. “Just kidding, I don’t do that anymore. Times have changed.“
This prompted fans to believe that The Simpsons would be putting an end to the long-running “gag,” with some applauding the action and others criticizing it. However, series co-developer and producer James L. Brooks told People that nothing has changed with the series. “Don...

In the wake of Matthew Perry's strikingly candid autobiography and the actor's untimely passing at the age of 54, there's been a tendency among "Friends" fans to say that watching the show will never be the same again. That's understandable. Perry himself said that even he couldn't bring himself to watch the beloved sitcom precisely because he could tell, season by season, what substance he was abusing based on how he looked. That's something that will forever stick with fans of the show, especially since his passing has solidified the inescapable tragedy of his addiction issues.
But there's also every reason to rewatch "Friends" with just as much, if not more optimism and joy than before. That's because, in spite of his problems and the physical toll they took, the Canadian star managed to project this unforgettable performance that I don't think it's an exaggeration to say, helped in part...

The world was rocked this weekend by the passing of actor Matthew Perry, only 54 years old and best known for his role as "Chandler Bing" on "Friends" — the sitcom for which "popular" doesn't begin to describe its reputation. And yet, Perry could have missed out on the part that made him famous and ended up on the wrong side of a Hollywood "what-if" story. The actor recounted the close call in his memoir, "Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing," published in 2022 and written in a conversational (and occasionally vulgar) style.
Let's set the scene: It's 1994 and Perry has a part in a sitcom pilot. Not on "Friends," but on "L.A.X. 2194." You've probably never heard of it. It's a workplace comedy about baggage handlers at Los Angeles International Airport ... but set in the year 2194. The leads, draped in futuristic costumes right out of "Star Wars," would be handling the luggage of alien tourists.
