Five-plus years following the launch of his film financing and production company, Hammerstone Studios, producer Alex Lebovici finds himself at “a big turning point.” After working for years on “building block” projects that held little to no interest for him on the level of story, he’s been able of late to assemble an increasingly packed studio slate, devoting himself solely to making the “fun, commercial, star-driven films” he likes to watch.
Breaking out in September 2022 with the buzzy horror thriller Barbarian, underscoring the company’s commitment to fresh genre fare with big, original ideas, Hammerstone is looking to recapture the zeitgeist this weekend with Boy Kills World, an action thriller starring Barbarian‘s Bill Skarsgård. Netflix was building up their series The Witcher, which is inspired by a series of novels by Andrzej Sapkowski, to be a major franchise. In addition to the flagship show, they made the anime film The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf and a prequel mini-series called The Witcher: Blood Origin, with another anime movie called The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep and a couple other spin-offs in the works… but now it looks like it’s all winding down. As The Witcher season 4 heads into production with Liam Hemsworth taking over the role of Geralt of Rivia from former star Henry Cavill, Netflix has announced that season 5 will be the end of the show. And while The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep is still expected to be released through the streaming service by the end of 2024, Redanian Intelligence and What’s on Netflix have learned that two other spin-offs, one...

The "Expendables" franchise has one hell of an impressive cast of recognizable actors. The first film was released on one very simple promise — to reunite as many '80s and '90s action film stars as possible and see them kick all kinds of ass. The film featured Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Mickey Rourke, and other stars in an ultra-macho, testosterone-exuding action franchise (which was originally meant to be a comedy).
One big '80s star who's never become an Expendable is Kurt Russell, but not for lack of trying. Russell actually turned Stallone down for a role in "The Expendables," with the star of "Escape from New York" citing that he was "not interested in 'ensemble acting' at this time." Of course, he'd change his mind just a couple of years later when Russell signed up to join the "Fast & Furious" franchise — known for its ensemble cast.

The 1990s represented a golden epoch for action cinema. This was the time which saw VHS and its digitized successor DVD introduce a whole new generation of fans to the magic of stars like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone. And those titans from the ‘80s still claimed big wins, too, at the box office and home media via the likes of Terminator 2: Judgement Day, Demolition Man, and Cliffhanger.
It was also the decade that saw audiences turn out in droves to theaters and rental stores to catch a glimpse of Steven Seagal’s flying fists in movies like Under Siege or Jean-Claude Van Damme and his trademark splits in Timecop; Jackie Chan finally got the larger American fanbase he so richly deserved thanks to the Rush Hour movies while Bruce Willis gave us Die Hard With A Vengeance, the best of all the Die Hard sequels, before pivoting...

Well, this is a bummer. The great Louis Gossett Jr., star of An Officer and a Gentleman, Roots, Diggstown, Jaws 3D, Iron Eagle, and so many more classics, has died at age 87. According to his obit in THR, no cause of death was immediately revealed, but the actor was treated for prostate cancer in 2010, and also battled Covid-19 back in 2020.
If you grew up in the eighties and nineties, Louis Gossett Jr was one of those faces you saw everywhere. He was in high demand as a character actor, winning an Oscar for playing Richard Gere’s tough but compassionate drill instructor in An Officer and a Gentleman. If you haven’t seen that movie in a while or remember it as a sappy romantic drama, I’d urge you to watch it again. It’s actually a pretty gritty, R-rated drama, and it climaxes with a nifty martial arts battle between Gossett and Gere,...

Louis Gossett Jr., the tough guy with a sensitive side who won an Oscar for his portrayal of a steely sergeant in An Officer and a Gentleman and an Emmy for his performance as a compassionate slave in the landmark miniseries Roots, has died. He was 87.
Gossett’s nephew told the Associated Press that the actor died Thursday night in Santa Monica. The cause of death is unknown, but Gossett announced in 2010 that he had prostate cancer.
With his sleek, bald pate and athlete’s physique, Gossett was intimidating in a wide array of no-nonsense roles, most notably in Taylor Hackford’s Officer and a Gentleman (1982), where as Gunnery Sgt. Emil Foley he rides Richard Gere’s character mercilessly (but for his own good) at an officer candidate school and gets into a memorable martial arts fight.
He was the second Black man to win an acting Oscar, following Sidney Poitier in 1964.

Lundgren directs and stars, alongside Kelsey Grammer, in an action movie about a Californian cop who clashes with a drug cartel while recovering from injury
With seven films under his belt since 2000, Dolph Lundgren has quietly amassed a sizeable directorial portfolio of B-movie action flicks but this Mexico border jaunt is less fun than his 2021 buddy flick Castle Falls. It’s also an appalling advert for the Californian police force, with the Dolphster taking the role of Travis Johansen, a racist patrolman caught roughing up the Latino citizenry; an interesting decision by his boss, then, to send him to “fucking Mexico” on a diplomatic mission to repatriate a pair of prostitutes who are potential key witnesses in the murder of some undercover DEA agents.
Things go south in all senses, and Johansen – laid up with a gut wound – has to convalesce with the family of Rosa (Christina Villa), one of...

Stars: Jason Momoa, Patrick Wilson, Amber Heard, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Randall Park, Dolph Lundgren, Temuera Morrison, Martin Short, Nicole Kidman | Written by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick | Directed by James Wan
Directed by James Wan, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is both a direct sequel to 2018’s Aquaman (also directed by Wan) and also the fifteenth and final film in the Dceu (the DC Extended Universe). As such, it does the occasional bit of floundering, but it just about treads water, thanks to a mostly seaworthy plot and suitably salty character work.
The plot picks up a few years after the events of the first film, with Arthur Curry / Aquaman (Jason Momoa) now married to Mera (Amber Heard), raising a young son, Arthur Jr. and dividing his time between ruling as the King of Atlantis (complete with shiny orange armour), and fighting crime on the surface world. Everything about the first trailer for the reboot of The Crow looks familiar. Sure, some of that is to be expected, as the 2024 movie retells the story from the 1994 cut classic. And yes, The Crow 2024 does make some obvious choices, casting Bill Skarsgård as a weird tall skinny guy and Danny Huston as a bad guy.
But besides the paint-by-numbers approach that director Rupert Sanders seems to be taking with the property, the really familiar part is The Crow‘s approach to comic book adaptations. Those young enough to have listened to the soundtrack to The Crow back in the ’90s will remember that the current pop culture landscape seemed impossible 30 years ago. Only the most recognizable superheroes got translated to live-action, and even then received a radical make-over, sanding down all of the colorful comic book aspects and stuck into a standard action flick.

Prison films and series tend to pick one of the following themes: Action flicks with plenty of fighting, starring the likes of a Sylvester Stallone, Dolph Lundgren, Jean-Claude Van Damme or Scott Adkins. Usually, it’s a good guy fighting for survival against overwhelming odds. Next would be the slew of sexploitation women-in-chains sort, using the premise as an excuse for nudity and other aspects of lurid appeal. Most were B movies that thrived in the 1970s –‘80s. The “Orange is the New Black” series classed that genre up considerably without losing its titillation value. Then there were high-quality character dramas like Shawshank Redemption, Cool Hand Luke and The Rock. Finally come comedies like The Longest Yard.

The Story: A college kid (Brandon Lee) witnesses a gangland hit. Betrayed by witness protection, he’s recruited by a task force headed by a no-nonsense cop (Powers Boothe) as a pawn, but little do they know he’s more than able to handle himself against any of his foes.
The Players: Starring: Brandon Lee, Powers Boothe, Tzi Ma & Nick Mancuso. Directed by Dwight H. Little.
The History: The early nineties were the heyday of the martial arts movie star. Steven Seagal and Jean-Claude Van Damme were consistently churning out hits, so if they could become icons, why not a guy like Brandon Lee? He was movie star handsome, could move, was charismatic and could act. Oh yeah – he also happened to be the son of the greatest Kung-Fu movie star of all time, Bruce Lee.
“I wouldn’t want to refer to them as stepping stones. That seems to demean them.

Growing up, Rosy Carrick was fascinated by Schwarzenegger, Lundgren and other shredded 80s screen stars. Now she is exploring what they helped her realise about her sex life
Is there a gap between our private desires and the ones we are brave enough to share? Not for Arnold Schwarzenegger. In the 1977 documentary Pumping Iron, a young Arnie equated weightlifting with ejaculating. “It’s as satisfying to me as coming,” he declares with a grin.
Schwarzenegger and fellow shredded action star Dolph Lundgren are central to actor, playwright and poet Rosy Carrick’s latest show, Musclebound. She was captivated by them as an adolescent and, a while ago, revisited Masters of the Universe, starring Lundgren as He-Man. During a torture scene where Lundgren is stripped almost naked, and has his oiled-up, hairless body whipped by his enemies, something struck her.

During a torture scene where Lundgren is stripped almost naked, and has his oiled-up, hairless body whipped by his enemies, something struck her.

After Russell Crowe’s story about his brutal injury on the sets of Robin Hood, Sylvester Stallone has now revealed how he sustained an even brutal spine injury while working in The Expendables. Stallone made this revelation on his reality television show, The Family Stallone, which also stars his wife, Jennifer Flavin, and three daughters. The injury occurred during a botched stunt where he was tackled by none other than WWE legend Stone Cold Steve Austin.

While Crowe and Stallone’s revelations show the extent to which actors were willing to go to entertain their audience, a few feel that bragging about recklessness is not the way to go about it. It was not the first instance where Sylvester Stallone risked a life-threatening injury on a movie set.

Sylvester Stallone revealed on “The Family Stallone” Season 2 premiere that he never recovered from an injury he endured during the making of “The Expendables” (via People). The stunt gone wrong occurred during a scene in which Stallone got tackled by co-star and WWE legend Steve Austin. It left Stallone with dislocated shoulders and a fractured neck that have since required seven back surgeries and counting. Stallone needed a metal plate inserted into his neck and spinal fusions.
“I did stupid stuff,” the actor said while discussing the need for his seventh surgery. “I was directing ‘Expendables’ and, like an idiot, I’m doing take 10, take whatever, and I remember one slam and I could actually feel one bang. Steve knew.
“I never recovered from [‘Expendables’],” Stallone added. “After that film, it was never physically the same. So I warn people, ‘Don’t do your own stunts.’ ”

Aquaman 1 vs Aquaman 2 Box Office (Photo Credit – IMDb)
Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom was expected to perform poorly at the worldwide box office. But it managed to bring in decent numbers and break even. The China collections have now concluded, and below is a detailed comparison of the closing figures with the original film starring Amber Heard and Jason Momoa in the lead.
Aquaman 2 was released in China on December 20, 2023. The superhero film left behind The Marvels and The Batman in advance booking sales. It was largely dependent on spot bookings, and despite leaving behind films like Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania and Oppenheimer, analysts were worried that the film might wipe out ahead of New Year’s due to a big local release.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, starring Jason Momoa in the lead, was released in the theatres last year in December, and the film is all set to stream on Ott. Scroll below for more.
It is the sequel to 2018’s Aquaman and tells the story of Arthur Curry, who goes on a quest to prevent a war between the land and ocean. DC Studios‘ last gasp before James Gunn reboots the Dcu is coming to the Max streaming service later this month. Swimming onto the platform on February 27, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom debuted in theaters last year during the Christmas holiday stretch. Unfortunately, the James Wan-directed Aquaman 2 floated on the surface of the box office like a dead fish, with $123 million domestically and $433 million worldwide. In contrast, Aquaman netted $335M in the United States and $1.1B worldwide. The difference in dollars earned between both films is staggering, with multiple culprits to blame for the film’s failure, including wild on-set rumors, Amber Heard’s legal battle with ex-husband Johnny Depp, and DC jumping the gun on its plans to reboot the Dceu.

The Lost Kingdom is now inside of your home, as “Aquaman 2” swims to streaming on Feb. 27.
The Jason Momoa-led superhero sequel will be available to watch on Max just two months after it debuted in theaters over the Christmas holiday.
The film — which also stars Amber Heard, Patrick Wilson, Nicole Kidman, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Randall Park and Dolph Lundgren — follows Momoa’s oceanic stud as he once again goes up against Black Manta, who threatens to unleash an evil and ancient force using the Black Trident. Aquaman teams up with his half-brother Orm, the former king of Atlantis, to put aside their differences and save their underwater world from permanent destruction.
“Aquaman 2” floundered at the box office, collecting only $123 million domestically and $433 million worldwide. Compare that to 2018’s “Aquaman,” which raked in $335 million in the U.S. and Canada alone (and more than $1.1 billion globally).

Sylvester Stallone‘s daughters automatically knew what it was like to be famous. But the Rocky star was concerned that being celebrity kids might do more harm than good when it came to his family.
Sylvester Stallone didn’t want his daughters becoming another celebrity cautionary tale Sylvester Stallone, Sistine Stallone, Sophia Stallone, Scarlet Stallone, Jennifer Flavin | Albert L. Ortega/Getty Images
Hollywood is full of stories about young celebrities who go off the rails, and Stallone worried his daughters would be one of them. The Stallone sisters grew up very differently from their famous father.
Stallone himself was famously brought up in Hell’s Kitchen, New York, which he didn’t enjoy because of its occasionally harsh environment. At one point, the actor had to sell his dog to make ends meet. His Rocky movie changed everything, allowing not only Stallone to live a comfortable lifestyle, but his daughters as well.

When a director circles a project, it can be a tentative proposition – as we all discovered last week when word began to spread that David Leitch was likely to make the next Jurassic World entry, before he swiftly dropped out. But things are apparently much more promising for Bumblebee director (and Laika studio boss) Travis Knight, who is closing in on a deal to handle the new live-action Masters Of The Universe film.
According to Deadline's sources, Knight has yet to sign, but it's looking good for him — especially since Chris Butler, a veteran Laika writer and director – is polishing the script. But they'll need all the help they can get, as this is one that has eluded more than one studio and a host of filmmakers.

Here we go again. Another year is starting, which means it's time for the "He-Man and the Masters of the Universe" movie to get yet another director. Like so many projects stuck in developing hell, it seems like practically every director currently working in Hollywood has, at some point, been involved in this film.
Now, Deadline reports that Travis Knight — the director of "Bumblebee" and "Kubo and the Two Strings," founder and CEO of Laika, and son of Nike co-founder Phil Knight — is the latest name to be attached to the long-in-development "Masters of the Universe" movie from Mattel. The report specifically says he is in "final negotiations" to direct, yet the deal hasn't closed just yet as other elements of the film are still being figured out. Nevertheless, this is exciting news, and brings the project one step closer to actually getting made.

Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom Worldwide Box Office Updates! (Photo Credit – IMDb)
Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom was predicted to drown at the box office, but it proved otherwise. It looks like Jason Momoa, Amber Heard, and the team’s charm from the original movie drew the audience to the theatres. Despite mixed reviews, Aquaman 2 is now Warner Bros’ fifth highest-grossing movie after the pandemic era. Scroll below for all the details!
Aquaman 2 stars Patrick Wilson in the lead alongside Jason Momoa. It narrates a tale of brotherhood, so Amber Heard, aka Mera, had to take a back seat. While the actress has claimed her role was significantly reduced amid the Johnny Depp legal row, director James Wan claims it was always the plan. Either way, there was much negativity ahead of release, but the Dceu film has managed to sail its boat.

Sylvester Stallone paid tribute today to Carl Weathers, who played Apollo Creed in the first four Rocky films and died Thursday at 76.
In an emotional Instagram video post (watch it below), the three-time Oscar nominee recalled his longtime friend in a sometimes-quivering voice: “”My life was forever changed for the better the day I met Carl Weathers. … He was magic, and I was fortunate to be part of his life. … Rest in power and keep punching.”
Standing in front of an abstract painting from their Rocky days in the ring, Stallone says in the video: “Hello, everyone. Today is an incredibly sad day for me. … Carl Weathers was such an integral part of my life which he says everything about it. I give him incredible credit …. because when he walked into that room, and I saw him for the first time, I saw greatness, but I didn’t realize how great.

Carl Weathers is dead at the age of 76. It’s shocking to consider, even though his best-known character, Apollo Creed, in some ways was ultimately defined by his death in 1985’s “Rocky IV.” The franchise went on without him, and ultimately followed his son played by Michael B. Jordan. But for the next 38 years, there was the fact that Weathers was in reality alive, well, in astonishingly great shape, and underutilized.
Now, Weathers has died himself. And given that he was one of Hollywood’s most prominent musclemen of the late ’70s and ’80s, an era defined by fitness-obsessed actors who either were athletes or aspired to be them, 76 feels startlingly young. Especially given how vital and active he was up until the very end, even directing a couple episodes of “The Mandalorian” so good that one wishes he could have, for the sake of that show’s quality, directed more.
