Kenneth Branagh has spent much of his career bringing to life the works of British writers William Shakespeare and Agatha Christie. Now he will not get a chance to play a different famed scribe. Branagh will voice star as Charles Dickens in The King of Kings, a faith-based feature inspired by the lives of both Dickens and Jesus Christ.
Uma Thurman will voice star as Catherine Dickens, the wife of the author, while Jojo Rabbit‘s Roman Griffin Davis will voice the couple’s youngest son, Walter.
The King of Kings is inspired by “The Life of Our Lord,” a Dickens short story published in 1934, decades after his death. It follows Dickens and Walter as they — and their cat Willa — become immersed in the story of Jesus.
“It is through the Dickens family that our audience experiences the life of Jesus Christ, and Kenneth Branagh, Uma Thurman and Roman Griffin Davis bring all the emotion,...

‘I was only able to go on stage hammered’: David Harewood on acting, racism and his new role at Rada
He had barely started his career when abuse left him mentally ill. But he went on to phenomenal success – and has just been made president of the UK’s leading drama school
This is the first time David Harewood has stepped through the doors of Rada’s London headquarters since he became its president in mid-February, and he’s immediately struck by flashbacks of his time as a student here. “Stunning memories,” he says. “Memories of my audition, the paintings … and that staircase will always be memorable because you walk in and go: ‘Oh my God, I’m at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art!’ It’s very evocative.”
Harewood, 58, is the first person of colour to lead Rada, and he follows in the footsteps of such luminaries as Kenneth Branagh, Richard Attenborough, Princess Diana and John Gielgud. It is the most prestigious of acting schools – some would say the...

Over the past decade, Lily James has distinguished herself by building one of the most varied resumes as any film actor her age. After getting her start on British television, James first became known to American audiences in 2012 when she joined the cast of “Downton Abbey” as the love-struck Lady Rose MacClare, a role that earned James two Screen Actors Guild Awards as a member of the show’s ensemble cast.
The actress quickly followed up that television triumph with one on the big screen in the title role of Disney’s live-action “Cinderella,” directed by Kenneth Branagh, which clearly proved her appeal to audiences of all ages. One of the most reliable screen presences in recent years, James showed enormous range in choosing her projects, from such crowd pleasers as “Baby Driver” and “Mamma Mia! Hollywood’s biggest night saw Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” continue the dominance that it has exhibited throughout the entirety of this awards season at Sunday night’s 96th Academy Awards. The film won seven awards, including three of the four biggest honors of the night. However, it was not the only winner, as Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things” picked up four Oscars of its own, including the Best Actress trophy for Emma Stone.
In total, 13 different films were awarded trophies across the 23 categories, and nearly all of them are available to stream. The Streamable’s experts have compiled a dynamic list of each 2024 Oscar winner and where you can stream it. As these films invariably jump between different platforms, this list will change along with them, so you will never have to be confused about where to watch “Barbie,” “American Fiction,” “Anatomy of a Fall,” “The Zone of Interest,” and more.

He’s the director most associated with 21st century cinematic spectacle and, finally, he has an Oscar. Christopher Nolan has won the Best Director Oscar at the 96th Academy Awards for “Oppenheimer.”
This is only the second time Nolan’s ever been nominated for Best Director. His first came for 2017’s “Dunkirk.” He has received a total of eight Oscar nominations in his entire career, however, including those two Best Director nods: also, for Best Original Screenplay for 2000’s “Memento,” Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay for 2010’s “Inception,” Best Picture for “Dunkirk,” and Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Picture for “Oppenheimer.” With the film also winning Best Picture that means he actually now has two Oscars.
“Oppenheimer” itself won seven Oscars: in addition to Best Director and Best Picture, it won Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr., Best Film Editing, Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, and Best Actor for Cillian Murphy.

In the late eighties/ early nineties, shortly after they did Predator together, Arnold Schwarzenegger, John McTiernan and writer Shane Black were all set to team on a big-budget movie adaptation of the DC comic book Sgt. Rock. This is why, at the end of Predator, Black is seen reading a Sgt Rock comic during the cast roll. According to author Nick de Semlyan’s new book, “The Last Action Heroes” (buy it here), the project was heavily developed in ’88 and ’89, only to be demolished by an unlikely candidate – Monty Python’s John Cleese.
At the time, Cleese was riding high on the success of A Fish Called Wanda, and McTiernan thought he would be an ideal addition to the movie’s cast. The film was set to adapt an old Danny Kaye comedy called Imitation General. Cleese would play an English cook posing as a general during WW2 and being...

On filming after a sandstorm on The Tourist:
“…And as I was doing it with Danielle [Macdonald], who’s my co-star in The Tourist, I’m just watching her and I am trying not to react as flies were like going into her eye, up her nose and her mouth. And then I was like consuming them. When the camera came around on to me and I could see her face like trying to tell me this is happening. They spent so much money painting the flies out.

“Anatomy of a Fall” is the clear favorite to win Best Original Screenplay this year but nominees “The Holdovers,” “Past Lives,” “Maestro,” and “May December” are all hoping to spoil the party. Máiréad Tyers’ first on-screen role straight out of drama school was in Kenneth Branagh’s “Belfast.” “You don’t really see me in the film at all,” she says. “[But] I’m so proud of it.” A year later, she wrapped her first leading role in U.K. Disney+ original comedy “Extraordinary.” In the show — basically a flatshare sitcom with a twist — Tyers plays 20-something Jen, who is messy, funny and the only person in the world without a superpower.
But Jen can also be selfish and occasionally obnoxious – mostly to her flatmates Carrie (Sofia Oxenham), Kash (Bilal Hasna) and, erm, Jizzlord (Luke Rollason) — and Tyers’ superpower is making her not just relatable, but likeable. So much so that the show, which was created and written by newcomer Emma Moran, has been renewed for a second season, which drops today on Disney+ and on Hulu in the U.S.

Triple winner Oppenheimer
It was another big night for Oppenheimer at the Screen Actors' Guild awards, as the film took home three awards, including the coveted prize for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. Receiving this on behalf of his colleagues, Kenneth Branagh expressed his gratitude not just to SAG but also to each individual SAG-AFTRA member whose participation in the recent strikes has improved conditions for actors throughout the US industry.
Describing himself as a failed musician who had always felt like an interloper in acting circles, Cillian Murphy, named Best Actor in a Leading Role, echoed the sentiments of many past winners in saying that this award is particularly special to him.
Held at the Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall in Los Angeles, California, the ceremony was streamed globally on Netflix for the first time.
