This first Hollywood studio feature with a black female director is a compelling account of a South African who turns against the ruling caste
In the late 80s, there were a number of films about apartheid South Africa that somehow made the black experience dramatically subordinate to white liberal activism. Chris Menges’s A World Apart from 1988 had Barbara Hershey as the white campaigner based on anti-apartheid activist Ruth First; the year before that, Richard Attenborough’s excruciatingly well-intentioned Cry Freedom was supposedly about the friendship between white journalist Donald Woods (Kevin Kline) and Steve Biko (Denzel Washington), but contrived to put Woods at the centre of the action, all but forgetting about Biko. Euzhan Palcy’s A Dry White Season from 1989, now released on Blu-ray, looks on the face of it to be the same sort of thing. And yet this movie is much tougher and shrewder on what...

A smile is contagious. And it’s not always nice. The trailer of Smile 2 reminds us that it is not pleasant to have everyone around you smile. The Naomi Scott starrer is all set to be the sequel to Smile which hit the theatres in 2022. But there was more to the film than just the spine chilling performances we witnessed. What set the movie apart was its top of the drawer and rather chilling marketing campaign. And it is anyone’s guess that they’ll be looking to take things up a notch with promotions for Smile 2.

The Bikeriders, which follows 1960s Midwestern motorcycle club The Vandals as it evolves from a group of local outsiders into a violent gang, features not only a lot of bike riding but also a lot of accents.
At the film’s Los Angeles premiere on Monday, star Austin Butler, who plays Benny — a member of the club who begins a romance with Kathy, played by Jodie Comer — said that when approaching his character’s Chicago accent, “I spent some time thinking about it beforehand; I wanted to figure out where Benny fits into the tapestry of the film, how thick to go with the dialect.”
With their characters based on real people, inspired by the 1967 photo-book by Danny Lyon depicting motorcycle club Outlaws Mc, Butler added that, “Once I’d heard Jodie’s audio of the real Kathy, then I tried to find something that felt suited to that. So...

Plot: A Chicago biker gang rises in prominence throughout the sixties, only to eventually shift from a family-centred club into something more sinister and dangerous.
Review: To say that I’ve been looking forward to The Bikeriders would be a major understatement. The director, Jeff Nichols, is a favorite of mine, and this is his first movie since his 2016 double-header of Midnight Special and Loving. The wait for this one has seemed extra long, with it initially slated for a 2023 release through Searchlight, only for them to eventually sell the film to Focus Features, who’ve decided to position it as a unique piece of summer counter-programming. This might be a wise choice, given the starry cast (who we interviewed recently), led by a strong trio of performances by Jodie Comer, Austin Butler, and Tom Hardy.
Many will compare this to Goodfellas, with the movie giving off strong vibes reminiscent...

Tom Hardy has been fielding comparisons to Marlon Brando since his launch onto the acting scene, not just for his chameleon-like craftsmanship, but for his unique approach to characterization. In the upcoming Jeff Nichols crime saga “The Bikeriders,” this comparison is cemented in cinema lore as his character, Johnny, finds inspiration while watching Brando’s performance as gang leader Johnny Strabler in “The Wild One.” Speaking to Fandango for a recent interview, Hardy said this made it a lot easier for him to draw on Brando for his own performance, but that it needed to go deeper than mimicry.
“It was very important to Jeff [Nichols] that he was focused on that moment,” Hardy said of his character watching Brando on the big screen. “So it would be foolish to not connect the dots that that was somehow an undertow, but certainly that this was a person imitating something that had come from that,...

While there are directors with strong opinions on comic book films, often targeting the face of it all, Marvel Studios, there is no shortage of impressive actors who have starred in these superhero films. You have actors like Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo, Josh Brolin, Michael B. Jordan, Scarlett Johansson and more who have proven their abilities in more dramatic fares. There are even some older iconic actors that have dabbled in the genre, like Robert Redford, Michael Douglas, Anthony Hopkins, Kevin Costner and Michelle Pfeiffer. And let’s not forget names like Marlon Brando and Jack Nicholson starring in the ones that legitimized the genre.
Russell Crowe is also someone who lent his talents to multiple superhero films. He was Jor-El in Man of Steel, Zeus in Thor: Love and Thunder and he will be seen in the upcoming Spider-Man Sonyverse film Kraven The Hunter as Kraven’s bad dad.

Christopher Reeve’s reputation as one of Hollywood’s kindest souls extended beyond his iconic roles. His generosity and warmth touched everyone around him, whether on the grand stages of blockbuster films or the more modest sets of smaller productions. Annette O’Toole, who shared the screen with him in Superman III, fondly recalls how Reeve’s genuine kindness brightened not only the filming experience but also off-camera moments.

Editor’s note: this list was originally published in May 2024. It has since been updated in honor of Father’s Day.
Every family relationship is fertile material for any film, but none have been pillaged quite as extensively as the father/son dynamic. Blame the patriarchy, perhaps, for centering the male experience far more extensively in fiction, resulting in films where daughters and mothers tend to fall by the wayside in favor of drama between the men of the family.
Still, filmmakers and their work respond to the imperfect culture we all live in, and the relationship between a father and son can act as a vehicle to explore powerful ideas on screen. Familial expectations, pressures to uphold legacies, and the emotional repression that often defines heterosexual male relationships inform many of cinema’s greatest father stories, which can frequently be boiled down to the (somewhat reductive) label of “daddy issue” dramas.

Russell Crowe’s filmography may look a little odd to the average cinephile. From “L.A. Confidential” to “Thor: Love and Thunder,” from winning an Oscar for “Gladiator” to starring in not one but two exorcism films – Crowe seems to have done it all, from high to lowbrow.
And according to the star, that’s the whole point of having a lasting career: To pick and choose what one wants to do regardless of how prestige (or not) the project may be.
“I’ve been unreasonably happy for most of my life. I know that bothers some people, but that’s just not my problem. I pursue creatively and artistically what I want to do, and I have done that for probably about 35 years, you know? I do it unapologetically,” Crowe told GQ UK. “And my choices are always freaking people out.”

How would you like to spend a special Father’s Day with your dad? Here’s a suggestion — why not sit down for a couple of hours and watch one of these movies that’s all about fathers, both terrific and horrible? Our ranked photo gallery above includes many fine suggestions, all of which feature an Oscar-winning performance by an actor who plays a father where that role was pivotal to the plot.
Though there are thousands of films in which one character happens to be a father, you won’t find them all on this list. Val Kilmer left no stones unturned when he wrote his memoir, I’m Your Huckleberry, which was released in 2020. With a title ripped off from one of his famous lines in Tombstone, the book was a brutally frank, tell-all tale of Kilmer’s life, including his love, loss, and regret. In one of his confessions in the book, the Batman Forever actor revealed his crush on co-star Angelina Jolie.

There are very few actors like Al Pacino in the movie landscape. Memorable in every role, he has that animal magnetism to him that makes his every part unforgettable, and his performances in criminal dramas throughout the decades have largely defined the genre for years to come. Al Pacino is a giant in his own right, no doubt.
But back in the day, it was a whole different giant, arguably, an even bigger one, whose mere presence next to him was “unnerving” for Al Pacino. Who was it?
Al Pacino’s The Godfather Role Was a Risk
Francis Ford Coppola’s most iconic movie trilogy, The Godfather, saw Al Pacino play the part of Michael Corleone, the mafia boss’s son. When he was offered the gig, the young actor couldn’t believe it: he was barely a rookie at the time, only having played in a few plays before.

Jennifer Lopez's illustrious career in music and film has once again taken a backseat to her love life. Despite her blockbuster hits, platinum-selling albums, sold-out tours, and a Las Vegas residency, the Latina megastar continues to be chastised about her romantic relationships. Front and center today is her marriage to Ben Affleck, with various opinions and rumors swirling on social media. But all the chatter points to one thing: blatant misogyny from internet trolls and the media that places the blame on Lopez for her failed relationships. From the divorce rumors to the cancellation of her tour, Lopez is being kicked while she's down, and the public seems thirsty for it.
Today's headlines paint a one-sided picture of Affleck navigating a tumultuous marriage to an overly ambitious, workaholic diva who can't seem to get love right. These biased narratives seem to be one reason why Lopez released her film "This Is Me…...

The late James Caan considered himself a Jewish cowboy from New York. Caan played the hot-headed son of the Corleone family, Sonny Corleone, in Francis Ford Coppola’s epic crime film The Godfather. However, Caan was alleged to be more like his angry and violent character in real life, too. Caan was accused of being abusive towards his girlfriend Sheila Marie Ryan in the 1980s.

In films, the leading actor is often referred to as the figure with the majority of screen time, and in most cases, they’re the one who gets the shot at the Best Actor accolade in major Award events. But there have been instances when this wasn’t the case.
Anthony Hopkins in Silence of the Lambs
For example, Anthony Hopkins won the Oscar for Best Actor for playing everyone’s favorite cannibal in The Silence of the Lambs, even though he appeared onscreen for a mere 24 minutes. However, in The Godfather‘s case, Marlon Brando nabbed the nod for Best Actor at the Oscars, even though Al Pacino fit that bracket on paper.
Ethan Hawke also found himself on a similar boat after starring opposite Denzel Washington in the 2001 crime thriller Training Day, which earned the latter an Oscar for Best Actor.

Marlon Brando is probably best known for portraying the role of Don Vito Corleone in the 1972 film The Godfather. After starring alongside Al Pacino in the ’72 film, Brando starred alongside Robert De Niro in the 2001 film titled The Score.

However, filming for The Score was easier said than done. With inflated egos and a director who was marking his debut in drama films, Brando and director Frank Oz did not get along at all on the sets of the 2001 film! It was Robert De Niro who had to become the middleman for both of them while the filming took place.

Bringing together a legendary ensemble to translate Mario Puzo’s glorious novel to life was no cakewalk; being a part of the iconic star cast of The Godfather was perhaps even more complicated a feat to achieve. But even out of those who did get to work in Francis Ford Coppola’s crime classic, not everyone felt exhilarated about the opportunity.

In fact, there was one star who felt anything but elated for the most endearing reason, though.
The Rocky Star Who Didn’t Wish to Be Cast in The Godfather
If Talia Shire could go back in time and extricate herself from the colossal blockbuster that her brother helmed, she probably would.
Shire, 78, who happens to be Francis Ford Coppola’s younger sister, was cast as Connie Corleone – the tenacious and only daughter of the formidable patriarch of the Corleone family.

From leading the most acclaimed Star Wars release, The Empire Strikes Back to starring in Raiders of the Lost Ark and Blade Runner, the ’80s saw Harrison Ford at his peak. Moreover, apart from taking leading roles in major sci-fi and fantasy releases, he also made sure to star in several acclaimed dramas, including Witness, which earned him an Oscar nod for Best Actor.
But while Ford took on many iconic gigs, especially in the 80s, the actor also chose to turn down a plethora of them, including Brian De Palma’s The Untouchables.

Hollywood is filled to the brim with all kinds of movies. Some you never want to forget because of how good they are and some you just can’t forget because of how bad they were. Val Kilmer’s The Island of Dr. Moreau falls in the latter category. The film was supposed to be directed by Richard Stanley, but after a series of problems arose at production, the filmmaker was asked to leave by New Line Cinema. John Frankenheimer brought the film to the finish line but to no avail.

Certain films become permanently carved as classics, those that make cinematic history, and Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather is one such masterpiece. From its unforgettable rendition of the mafia to the entrancing performances of Marlon Brando and Al Pacino, the 1972 gangster film is perhaps one of Hollywood’s greatest pride.

Al Pacino and Robert De Niro are two of the most prolific veteran actors currently working in Hollywood. The legends have won Oscars and have featured in multiple acclaimed films. They have also worked with legendary directors such as Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino, Francis Ford Coppola, and more.
De Niro and Pacino have worked together on four films to date, with the last being The Irishman. Though they first featured in the film The Godfather – Part II, they never shared the screen as their roles were set in different periods. The first time they ever shared a screen was in Michael Mann’s cult classic film Heat.

A new episode of The Black Sheep video series has arrived online this morning, and with this one we’re looking back at one of the most fascinating “doomed productions” ever, the 1996 version of The Island of Dr. Moreau. (Watch the movie Here.) To find out why we think this one deserves more love than it gets, check out the video embedded above!
Based on an 1896 novel by H.G. Wells, the film was originally going to be directed by Richard Stanley, who was becoming a popular name in the horror genre at the time. Unfortunately, the production was a mess from the moment the cast and crew arrived on set. Stanley was fired, cast members quit, co-stars Marlon Brando and Val Kilmer exhibited strange behavior while dealing with tragedy and heartbreak. The upcoming Venice Film Festival is shaping up to be a star-studded affair with Lady Gaga, Joaquin Phoenix, Angelina Jolie, Daniel Craig, Johnny Depp, George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Gal Gadot and Ana de Armas among top Hollywood talents likely to be launching high-profile titles from the Lido.
Though festival chief Alberto Barbera has yet to see several submitted works that are likely to make the cut, a clutch of globally buzzy movies have already secured a coveted Venice berth, though some of the more mainstream entries will probably be bowing out-of-competition.

One of the classic movie tropes of studio comedies, and especially in the 70s and 80s- is the ever-clever “slobs vs snobs” tale. You know, the blue-collar underdog against a preppy, often annoyingly sophisticated social elite. Movies like Revenge of the Nerds, Animal House, Wayne’s World, or Caddyshack make this the crux of their stories and often use multiple characters in each category to drive the shenanigans all the way up. But in some cases, a movie will tell the story with just one slob and one snob- and crank them both to their absolute extremes- and then throw in a heist because… we love that stuff.
In today’s episode of Revisited, we’re going to be talking about 1988’s buddy comedy classic- Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. This movie stars Steve Martin and (the now retired) Michael Caine as two con artists who make an old western-style bet to run each other out of town.

Albert S. Ruddy, who earned two Best Picture Oscars for producing The Godfather and Million Dollar Baby and co-created TV shows including Walker, Texas Ranger and Hogan’s Heroes, died May 25 at UCLA Ronald Reagan Medical Center after a brief illness, a family spokesman said. He was 94.
Ruddy is one of nine producers ever to earn two or more Best Picture Oscars, and has the distinction of winning them with the largest interval in between — 32 years.
He recently was portrayed by Miles Teller in the Paramount+ miniseries The Offer, which chronicles Ruddy’s experience making the 1972 film that Coppola directed and adapted with Mario Puzo from the latter’s bestselling novel.

Al Ruddy, who co-created the famed CBS sitcom Hogan’s Heroes, then captured Academy Awards for producing the best picture winners The Godfather and Million Dollar Baby, has died. He was 94.
Ruddy, also credited as one of the creators of the long-running CBS police drama Walker, Texas Ranger, died Saturday following a brief illness at UCLA Ronald Reagan Medical Center, a publicist announced.
On the heels of The Godfather (1972), Ruddy produced another box-office hit with the original The Longest Yard (1974), the prison-set football movie that starred Burt Reynolds. The pair then reteamed for the action road films The Cannonball Run (1981) and its 1984 sequel, both directed by stuntman-turned-helmer Hal Needham.
The personable Ruddy also produced such films as Bad Girls (1994), the first Western with all female leads (Madeleine Stowe, Mary Stuart Masterson, Andie MacDowell and Drew Barrymore); the baseball comedy The Scout (1994), starring Albert Brooks and Brendan Fraser; and Matilda (1978), a comedy...

“Thank you for your service.” The words have become a cliché, but Hollywood has tried long and hard to make them matter. The industry has produced countless films about warfare and those who died for their country (whom we remember this week). But it has had a mixed record on presenting characters suffering the after-effects of putting their lives on the line. They may have survived, but lost comrades and innocence. It is their moment, too.
World War II brought the most cinematic treatment, and one of the directors who himself served — William Wyler — later had the guts to depict the challenges soldiers faced when the fighting stopped. Vietnam was likely the most troublesome to depict, it being the one we lost. Right-winger John Wayne was up first, with “The Green Berets,” gung-ho in flavor. It wasn’t until the late ‘70s that a pair of exceptional movies focused less...

Only a few films have managed to do what The Godfather did. The 1972 film by Francis Ford Coppola starring Al Pacino is one of the greatest and most influential films of all time and you cannot have a conversation about Hollywood’s best works without mentioning it. Everything from the cinematography and direction to the cast and storyline was absolute perfection.

While the film went on to become a cultural phenomenon, there was no way the cast and crew could have guessed the level of impact The Godfather would go on to make. However, Al Pacino once recalled a moment from the set involving Francis Ford Coppola which made him realize just what a gem of a film he was in.

Memorial Day is more than just an extra day off; it’s a moment to honor those who have sacrificed their lives for our freedom. Film has a unique power to capture the heroism, tragedy, and complexities of war, giving us a way to remember and reflect on the past. A Harrowing Vietnam Experience Apocalypse Now (1979) follows Captain Benjamin L. Willard (Martin Sheen) on a mission to assassinate Colonel Kurtz (Marlon Brando), who has gone rogue. The journey is as much internal as it is physical. It’s notorious for its brutal depictions of the Vietnam War’s chaotic and psychological impacts.Yet...

“Being Maria” is a flawed but fascinating look at the turbulent life of actor Maria Schneider, played by a game Anamaria Vartolomei (“Happening”). It limns her rebellious teen years, her big breakthrough at 19 in Bernardo Bertolucci’s “Last Tango in Paris,” and how her trauma on set and the film’s notoriety impacted her subsequent career and mental health. Helmer Jessica Palud (“Back Home”) and co-scripter Laurette Polmanss loosely adapt a memoir by Schneider’s younger cousin to show events through the star’s eyes. Despite a clunky air of earnestness and some soap opera-like scenes, plus the overly familiar arc of a celebrity spiraling out of control, the film resonates because the central topic is so of the moment. It’s a cautionary tale about a naïve and powerless young talent abused in the name of art, as well as the agonizing aftermath of her maltreatment.

Al Pacino ruled the screens from the 70s up to the 90s with many acclaimed works and performances that won him various awards. The 70s were the seminal decade for the actor that established him as a bankable movie star. Films like Serpico, Dog Day Afternoon, and …And Justice for All proved that Pacino was a force to be reckoned with.

Legendary actor James Caan was known for his role as Sonny Corleone in Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather. The actor received an Academy Award nomination for his role as Don’s eldest son and was often regarded as one of the greatest actors of the generation. Caan also starred in films such as Misery, The Gambler, and Elf.
Caan has also turned down many noted roles that turned out to be game-changers for the actors who ended up playing them. Among films such as The French Connection and Apocalypse Now, Caan was rumored to be offered the role of Han Solo in Star Wars. While Harrison Ford played the iconic character, Caan reportedly had a crude response to it.

Anamaria Vartolomei, the breakout star of Audrey Diwan’s Venice prizewinning “Happening,” is under the spotlight at this year’s Cannes Film Festival playing strong women in a pair of movies, “Being Maria” and “The Count Monte Cristo.” Both movies are supported by Chanel for which Vartolomei is an ambassador.
Vartolomei says since starring in Diwan’s drama “Happening,” which was set in the 1960s and centered around the then-illegal act of abortion, she has continued being lured to demanding roles with political and social themes.
“I think movies are the expressions of my engagements as a woman, and as such I often star in films that are engaged because when you’re an actress you contribute to change and we must continue to wage this battle that other women have led before,” says Vartolomei, who was wearing a glamorous dark khaki and black silk jacquard muslin dress by Chanel.

"One-Eyed Jacks" might have been Marlon Brando's sole directing stint, but the 1961 western comes as close to perfection as possible within the confines of the genre. A high-stakes robbery acts as a catalyst for the dramatic ebb and flow that defines the unforgettable story, where a man contends with the heinous betrayal by his mentor, the father figure who has shaped him into the person he is today. This brooding, brokenhearted man, Rio (Brando) flits between vengeance and forgiveness, with a budding romance complicating the instinctual need to settle scores the old-fashioned way. The film is also stunning to behold, its gaze lingering on beautiful landscapes that blend the romanticism of Westerns with the naturalistic impulses within its complicated characters.
The making of such an intense, kinetic drama was filled with roadblocks, and Brando was not involved with it from the get-go. "One-Eyed Jacks" was initially intended to function...

Not sure that I would equate Tom Holland and Zendaya with the same level of triple-a star firepower as Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, but the last time I witnessed sheer frenzied pandemonium outside the Duke of York’s Theatre was when Taylor went to see Burton read excerpts from Dylan Thomas’ Under Milk Wood in February 1982.
It was bonkers, with onlookers five deep on both sides of the street waiting for a glimpse of the superstar much-married Hollywood lovers.
Four decades on, I found myself at the same theatre that has stood on the site in St. Martin’s Lane since 1892.
This time it was the occasion of the official opening night for Jamie Lloyd’s stark, modern-dress production of Shakespeare’s The Most Excellent and Lamentable Tragedy of Romeo & Juliet, to give its full title, starring Holland and Francesca Amewudah-Rivers as the tragic star-crossed lovers.

Tom Cruise has always been an actor in the spotlight. If there is a role up for grabs, he would take it and turn it into one that would be remembered for a lifetime. He has done movies that have charted the box office like anything and those that bombed in the most unfortunate manner possible. Whatever the movie may be about, no matter how big or small his role may be, Cruise would always give his best.

When it comes to undisputed box office superstardom, it is difficult to look past Tom Cruise. The charismatic actor has proved his impact in Hollywood time and again through iconic blockbusters that have cemented his place as one of the most influential celebrities in the industry.

Francis Ford Coppola made one of the greatest crime films ever when he adapted Mario Puzo’s The Godfather. The Marlon Brando-starrer saw the veteran win his second Oscar for Best Actor and was a breakthrough for Al Pacino. Coppola then followed it up with The Godfather – Part II, which became the first sequel to win Best Picture.
The sequel saw Robert De Niro play the role of a younger Vito Corleone (played by Brando in the original). De Niro won the Oscar for Best Supporting Role for the film and had a breakthrough with the film. While he did a phenomenal job as Corleone, he reportedly auditioned way back for the first part and was up for the role of Sonny Corleone.

For Jeff Nichols, The Bikeriders’ long road trip began with a handful of photographs. Among them in grainy black and white was a lone figure, captured in blurred motion and with his head turned away as he zoomed across the Ohio River. The only clear details were the leathered texture of his jacket and the gleam flashing off his Harley’s steel. When discovering this image and many like it in 2003, Nichols was in no way a motorcycle connoisseur. To this day, big bikes terrify him. But he instantly knew how the pictures—taken by New Journalism legend Danny Lyon between 1963 and 1967—made him feel. And he needed to express that sensation onscreen.

There has been a lot of noise at this year’s Cannes Film Festival about France’s accelerated MeToo movement, particularly by female cinema stars leading the charge. When New Yorker film critic Pauline Kael wrote a long and heated rave of Bernardo Bertolucci’s Last Tango in Paris after its premiere in 1972, she stated, among other things, that “this is a movie people will be arguing about for as long as there are movies.”
Kael may have been overdoing it when she stressed Last Tango‘s monumental importance, claiming it was a “movie breakthrough” and that it “altered the face of the art form.” But in terms of people arguing years later about the film’s legacy, she was spot-on.
Case in point: Being Maria, a new biopic of tormented French actress Maria Schneider, who at age 19 starred opposite Marlon Brando in the Bertolucci movie — a feat that launched her career as a promising new international actress while destroying her life at the same time.
