- DirectorDavid O. RussellStarsChristian BaleMargot RobbieJohn David WashingtonIn the 1930s, three friends witness a murder, are framed for it, and uncover one of the most outrageous plots in American history.Takes off when Robbie confronts hospital in French, then takes up song. Hitchcock with a little Wes Anderson and "Jules et Jim." Politics brilliant as is cast, dialogue, music and art.
- DirectorS.S. RajamouliStarsN.T. Rama Rao Jr.Ram CharanAjay DevgnA fearless warrior on a perilous mission comes face to face with a steely cop serving British forces in this epic saga set in pre-independent India.Impressive. Certainly has it all (and then some): Superheroes, singing and dance, ultra violence. Like a reverse "Searchers."
- DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsMichelle WilliamsGabriel LaBellePaul DanoGrowing up in post-World War II era Arizona, young Sammy Fabelman aspires to become a filmmaker as he reaches adolescence, but soon discovers a shattering family secret and explores how the power of films can help him see the truth.. You can't quote a great film ("Liberty Valance") unless you're going to equal it--and he does. "How'd you like to meet the greatest director of all time?" brilliant scene. HS star's breakdown doesn't ring true, though it leads to line "I may make movie of it."
- DirectorRoger MichellStarsJim BroadbentHeather CraneyStephen RashbrookIn 1961, Kempton Bunton, a 60 year old taxi driver, steals Goya's portrait of the Duke of Wellington from the National Gallery in London.. (Film) trial of the decade. No wonder judge so severe; defendant funnier than he. Not much happens besides his inevitable job losses til trial; even theft low key. "I wasn't named after the racetrack, tho I was conceived there." Great job by lawyer.
- DirectorRichard LinklaterStarsMilo CoyJack BlackLee EddyA coming-of-age story set in the suburbs of Houston, Texas in the summer of 1969, centered around the historic Apollo 11 moon landing. Not only definitive film of Apollo 11, but also of late 60s, along with "Tree of Life." I like sisters turning channel from moon voyage to Joplin. Only flaw is structure (flash back and forth).
- DirectorTia LessinEmma PildesStarsAbbyJudith ArcanaHeather BoothPolice arrested seven women who were part of a clandestine network. Using code names, blindfolds and safe houses, they built an underground service for women seeking safe, affordable, illegal abortions calling themselves JANE.Real-life "Cider House Rules": laymen performing safe abortions. Kudos for getting lay abortionist and cop who busted them on camera. Constant contrast between young chicks and ladies they became.
- DirectorJohn Patton FordStarsAubrey PlazaTheo RossiBernardo BadilloDown on her luck and saddled with debt, Emily gets involved in a credit card scam that pulls her into the criminal underworld of Los Angeles, ultimately leading to deadly consequences.Somebody I'd like to have for a co-conspirator. Thrilling all the way. How-to on criminal enterprise
- DirectorDaniel RoherStarsAlexei NavalnyYulia NavalnayaChristo GrozevFollows the man who survived an assassination attempt by poisoning with a lethal nerve agent in August 2020. During his months-long recovery he makes shocking discoveries about the attempt on his life and decides to return home.I think they need a better ending. Don't understand why he returns when arrest and long sentence certain. Great job getting unwitting confession from would-be killer. I like Russian rationalizations for persecution ("liberals take drugs").
- DirectorSam MendesStarsOlivia ColmanMicheal WardColin FirthA drama about the power of human connection during turbulent times, set in an English coastal town in the early 1980s.Only problem is inferiority to "Cinema Paradiso." It's theatre that makes it special. No surprises.
- DirectorMark MylodStarsRalph FiennesAnya Taylor-JoyNicholas HoultA young couple travels to a remote island to eat at an exclusive restaurant where the chef has prepared a lavish menu, with some shocking surprises.Excellent in everything but concept. Motives for sous chefs even murkier than for chef. Maintains suspense and humor throughout.
