Tried to put them in order of most to least favorite. 10 means I love it, not that I think it's a perfect movie. Some of these carry a personal story for me, which pushes them up the list.

- DirectorMizuho NishikuboMamoru OshiiStarsAtsuko TanakaIemasa KayumiAkio ÔtsukaA cyborg policewoman and her partner hunt a mysterious and powerful hacker called the Puppet Master.Whenever I watch this movie, even the first time when I was around 14 at around the turn of millennium, I feel like I'm actually watching the future evolution of the human race. It's both chilling and exciting. This movie changed my life and was partly what helped me turn to atheism. Every time I've watched it, I reflect on it differently based on how my mind has changed over the years, always noticing things I hadn't before. So fortunate I saw this in a theatre in 2014.
- DirectorNaoko KusumiMizuho NishikuboMamoru OshiiStarsAkio ÔtsukaAtsuko TanakaTamio ÔkiIn the year 2032, Batô, a cyborg detective for the anti-terrorist unit Public Security Section 9, investigates the case of a female robot--one created solely for sexual pleasure--who slaughtered her owner.I took a good 20 years before I decided to see the direct sequel to GitS, and it blew me away almost as much as the first movie did. Even though I was sad at first that the movie wasn't focused on Motoko this time, I came to love how it was focused on her dear friend Batou and I loved seeing how Motoko has evolved and what she's become. I wasn't too hot on the more 3D visuals compared to the first movie though.
- DirectorFritz LangStarsBrigitte HelmAlfred AbelGustav FröhlichIn a futuristic city sharply divided between the working class and the city planners, the son of the city's mastermind falls in love with a working-class prophet who predicts the coming of a savior to mediate their differences.Way way way ahead of its time, and still better than most today. I was blown away by how engaging the final act is in this and one of the final lines, a message which is iconic and powerful and still needs to be heard today.
- DirectorRidley ScottStarsHarrison FordRutger HauerSean YoungA blade runner must pursue and terminate four replicants who stole a ship in space and have returned to Earth to find their creator.A prime example of why movies exist.
- DirectorSatyajit RayStarsKanu BannerjeeKaruna BannerjeeSubir BanerjeeImpoverished priest Harihar Ray, dreaming of a better life for himself and his family, leaves his rural Bengal village in search of work. This is perfect direction. It doesn't get any more perfect.
- DirectorChristopher NolanStarsChristian BaleHugh JackmanScarlett JohanssonAfter a tragic accident, two stage magicians in 1890s London engage in a battle to create the ultimate illusion while sacrificing everything they have to outwit each other. There are zero flaws with the movie. If anyone didn't enjoy it because you didn't understand it, watch it again. It literally gets better with every rewatch.
- DirectorRon FrickeStarsPatrick DisantoA collection of expertly photographed scenes of human life and religion.Such profound storytelling about humanity without saying a single word. The part that uses music from Dead Can Dance absolutely crushes me every time. Pretty much no other movie I've seen makes my tears run as much as this.
- DirectorFrancis Ford CoppolaStarsMatt DillonMickey RourkeDiane LaneAbsent-minded street thug Rusty James struggles to live up to his legendary older brother's reputation, and longs for the days of gang warfare. This movie is its own mood and there's no other movie like it. Mickey deserved all the awards for this. The visual embodiment of existential pain and anguish. I don't believe in the soul but I felt like I was watching mine through the screen.
- DirectorAkira KurosawaStarsTatsuya NakadaiTsutomu YamazakiKen'ichi HagiwaraA petty thief with an utter resemblance to a samurai warlord is hired as the lord's double. When the warlord later dies the thief is forced to take up arms in his place.Like a mountain.
- DirectorRidley ScottStarsSigourney WeaverTom SkerrittJohn HurtAfter investigating a mysterious transmission of unknown origin, the crew of a commercial spacecraft encounters a deadly lifeform.Best live action female lead ever. Best action hero in a live action movie ever, period! Amazing and unique art direction and atmosphere.
- DirectorChristopher NolanStarsChristian BaleHeath LedgerAaron EckhartWhen a menace known as the Joker wreaks havoc and chaos on the people of Gotham, Batman, James Gordon and Harvey Dent must work together to put an end to the madness.Batman Begins more than satisfied me as a massive fan of Batman who grew up watching the great Batman the Animated Series from childhood. The Dark Knight blew past any expectations I'd ever had for a Batman film or for a film in general. The marriage of art, intelligence, and entertainment here was at a revolutionary level. The worldwide phenomenon was amazing. I have to pinch myself when my tastes actually align with popular opinion for once. I don't think I'll never feel this connected to the rest of my fellow human beings ever again, lol.
- DirectorPeter JacksonStarsElijah WoodIan McKellenOrlando BloomA meek Hobbit from the Shire and eight companions set out on a journey to destroy the powerful One Ring and save Middle-earth from the Dark Lord Sauron. This movie was announced right after I had finished reading The Hobbit, which had become my favourite book ever, and I had to read again for school! We had to write an essay on it and I got an A+ and highest grade in the class for the once and only time in my life). I was reading the first LOTR book in the leadup to the film's release. I saw it twice, once on opening day and again for a class field trip! I just thought it was completely perfect. This series was one of the few highlights of my high school days.
- DirectorPeter JacksonStarsElijah WoodIan McKellenViggo MortensenWhile Frodo and Sam edge closer to Mordor with the help of the shifty Gollum, the divided fellowship makes a stand against Sauron's new ally, Saruman, and his hordes of Isengard.
- DirectorPeter JacksonStarsElijah WoodViggo MortensenIan McKellenGandalf and Aragorn lead the World of Men against Sauron's army to draw his gaze from Frodo and Sam as they approach Mount Doom with the One Ring.
- DirectorAkira KurosawaStarsToshirô MifuneTakashi ShimuraKeiko TsushimaFarmers from a village exploited by bandits hire a veteran samurai for protection, who gathers six other samurai to join him.
- DirectorLotte ReinigerCarl KochA handsome prince rides a flying horse to faraway lands and embarks on magical adventures, which include befriending a witch, meeting Aladdin, battling demons and falling in love with a princess. This woman's achievement in 2D animation is tragically overlooked. This is a total classic and one of my favorite silent films and one of my favorite films ever.
- DirectorDavid LeanStarsPeter O'TooleAlec GuinnessAnthony QuinnThe story of T.E. Lawrence, the English officer who successfully united and led the diverse, often warring, Arab tribes during World War I in order to fight the Turks.
- DirectorChristopher NolanStarsChristian BaleMichael CaineKen WatanabeAfter witnessing his parents' death, Bruce learns the art of fighting to confront injustice. When he returns to Gotham as Batman, he must stop a secret society that intends to destroy the city.As a kid, after seeing all the previous Batman films and realizing my favorite Batman was Batman the Animated series, I thought a good enough Batman movie would never be made for me. Then this movie came out. I went in expecting it to disappoint me, and it ended up being the Batman movie I always wanted. Well, almost. The sequel was even better than anything I could thought of, but still, the perfect Batman movie hasn't been made yet for me.
- DirectorRam Gopal VarmaStarsSanjay DuttUrmila MatondkarParesh RawalNandu, a small-time thief, is assigned to smuggle an unknown packet for a petty amount. With the police pursuing him, Nandu has to elude them and deliver the packet on time.Fun, hilarious, with an amazing soundtrack. Isn't that movie perfection? No? Well nutts to you then.
- DirectorWilliam BeaudineTom McNamaraStarsMary PickfordRoy StewartMary Louise MillerMolly, the eldest child at a baby farm hidden deep in a swamp, must rescue the others when their cruel master decides that one of them will be disposed of.So far my favorite movie starring this Canadian Icon. Mary Pickford.
- DirectorDavid HoganStarsPamela AndersonAmir AboulElaAdriana AlexanderDuring the Second American Civil War in 2017, Barb Wire owns a nightclub called the Hammerhead. Things become complicated when her ex-lover Axel Hood, who is married to the fugitive Corrina Devonshire, re-enters her life.Best Casablanca movie that isn't Casablanca... but for that reason I love it just a bit more, personally, even if of course it is by far an inferior film in comparison. The first live-action Comic book film I ever liked, before X-Men and Spiderman came out in 2000. I saw this in 1998 or 1999 when I was around 11.
- DirectorChristopher NolanStarsLeonardo DiCaprioJoseph Gordon-LevittElliot PageA thief who steals corporate secrets through the use of dream-sharing technology is given the inverse task of planting an idea into the mind of a C.E.O., but his tragic past may doom the project and his team to disaster.
- DirectorÁlex de la IglesiaStarsSancho GraciaÁngel de Andrés LópezCarmen MauraJulián Torralba is a former movie stuntman in Almeria, Spain. He and several of his colleagues, who once made a living in American Westerns shot in Spain, now are reduced to doing stunt shows for minuscule audiences on the decaying set built for those old Westerns. Julián wrestles with dark memories of the death of his son, also a stuntman, and with estrangement from his daughter-in-law Laura and her son Carlos. Carlos, a young boy, becomes intrigued with his late father's life and runs away to join Julián and his band of has-beens. There Carlos is initiated into the rambunctious life of these hard-drinking faux cowboys. But when Laura, a powerful executive looking for a new site for a tourist resort, learns that Carlos has joined the hated Julián, she moves to destroy even this remnant of Julián's once-proud career. Julián and the cowboys decide to fight back the only way they know how.IMO, this is the true modern ultimate fairy tale for little boys. Ok, well, at least until the last time westerns were still recognized by kids as being cool. Funny thing though, my mom is the biggest fan of westerns and cowboys that I've ever known.
- DirectorLarisa ShepitkoStarsBoris PlotnikovVladimir GostyukhinSergey YakovlevTwo Soviet partisans on a mission to gather food contend with the winter cold, the occupying Germans, and their own psyches. My own opinion aside, this should be considered not only the greatest film ever directed by a woman, but one of the greatest films ever made, period.
- DirectorBigas LunaStarsBiel DuranMathilda MayGérard DarmonA child cannot stand the idea of having a new brother and dreams about drinking milk from the breasts of his mother again. The child asks the moon to bring him a teet only for him.
