Lesbian films
List of all lesbian-themed movies I have watched. They are listed in the order I watched them, not according to rating.
I probably started this list (although not on IMDb yet) in 2013 or 2014 so some of these I haven't watched in a really long time. I moved the list over to here in May 2022, everything dated after May 21st 2022 should have the correct date to when I watched it first. Also, every entry as of Ammonite was watched very soon before the creation of this list (probably all in May 2022). I can not comment on the dates of all preceding entries though.
Don't read anything into the lengths of my notes. Sometimes I have a lot to say and sometimes I don't, it is not necessarily indicative of my feelings about the movie.

- DirectorAbdellatif KechicheStarsLéa SeydouxAdèle ExarchopoulosSalim KechioucheAdèle's life is changed when she meets Emma, a young woman with blue hair, who will allow her to discover desire and to assert herself as a woman and as an adult. In front of others, Adèle grows, seeks herself, loses herself, and ultimately finds herself through love and loss.
- DirectorJamie BabbitStarsNatasha LyonneClea DuVallMichelle WilliamsA naive teenager is sent to rehab camp when her straitlaced parents and friends suspect her of being a lesbian.Probably the most iconic and honestly one of the best lesbian movies of all time.
10/10 - DirectorAlexandra-Therese KeiningStarsRuth Vega FernandezLiv MjönesKrister HenrikssonA young woman engaged to be married finds herself in an affair with her soon-to-be stepmother's lesbian daughter.Great lesbian movie. Some of the highlights, beyond the obvious, that I appreciate in this movie are the family dynamics, in particular the complex father-daughter relationship and how it relates to their feelings about Mia's sexuality, as well as how not afraid it is to refer to Mia as bisexual which is really refreshing after so much media completely ignores that label.
9/10 - DirectorKatherine BrooksStarsErin KellyDiane GaidryLaura BreckenridgeThe intelligent Annabelle starts in an elite Catholic girls' boarding high school after being expelled from the previous 2 schools. She's open about being lesbian. She's attracted to her teacher, Simone. The adult teacher/minor student romance will always be uncomfortable to me and is why I can't fully get behind a movie like this. I feel like they have tried to mitigate this somewhat by making Annabelle the one with power and holding all the cards but that does not change the facts of their age and positions.
4/10 - DirectorAtom EgoyanStarsJulianne MooreAmanda SeyfriedLiam NeesonSuspecting her husband of infidelity, gynecologist Dr. Catherine Stewart hires an escort named Chloe in order to test his faithfulness. Soon, the relationships between all three intensify.6/10
- DirectorSue KramerStarsHeather GrahamTom CavanaghBridget MoynahanGray and Sam are brother and sister, best friends, and flatmates in New York City, where she creates ad campaigns and he's a surgery intern. Their social life is too insular, so they head to a dog park so Sam can, maybe, meet a woman. He does: Charlie, a zoologist new in the city; he likes her immediately, and the feeling seems mutual. As the three of them spend time together, what if Gray's feelings for Charlie aren't just sisterly? Not only might this explain her solitary life, but it could lead to real dilemmas--with Charlie (who's sweet, but a bit opaque) and with Sam. No advice comes from Gray's therapist, but a co-worker and a cab driver give theirs. Can Gray sort things out?7/10
- DirectorFernanda CardosoStarsAllison McAteeSarah StoufferKatherine Ann McGregorA coming-of-age drama about a former child actress attending college in search of independence and who ends up becoming romantically involved with a female professor.Same issue as Loving Annabelle although it is somewhat helped by the fact that it takes place at college instead of high school so even though the teacher/student relationship is uncomfortable, they are both adults. Although I do think they play into the age difference too much in a way that is uncomfortable, and scenes like the one where Cathrine bathes Jackie does not help.
5/10 - DirectorOl ParkerStarsPiper PeraboLena HeadeyMatthew GoodeA newlywed bride becomes infatuated with another woman who questions her sexual orientation, promoting a stir among the bride's family and friends. This is just The Lesbian Rom-Com™. It might not be the best or most profound movie on this list but for what it is, it is absolutely perfect. It is a classic Rom-Com with classic Rom-Com tropes except this time the romance is between two women which was basically unheard of in this genre at the time and still rare to this day.
10/10 - DirectorLukas MoodyssonStarsAlexandra DahlströmRebecka LiljebergErica CarlsonTwo teenage girls in small-town Sweden. Elin is beautiful, popular, and bored with life. Agnes is friendless, sad, and secretly in love with Elin.Great lesbian teen movie. This movie has become the blueprint that every Swedish teen movie tries to emulate but almost never to great success. This is just a sweet story with characters and settings that feel real.
9/10 - DirectorLisa CholodenkoStarsAnnette BeningJulianne MooreMark RuffaloTwo children conceived by artificial insemination bring their biological father into their non-traditional family life.
- DirectorShamim SarifStarsLisa RaySheetal ShethAntonia FreringA young woman engaged to be married finds her life changed forever when she meets her best friend's girlfriend.8/10
- DirectorLee RoseStarsStockard ChanningEllen MuthKelly RowanA high-school girl's first sexual experience is with another girl, and, along with her first broken heart, she must deal with her mother's reaction to her revelation that she is a lesbian and with ostracism at school.
- DirectorNicole ConnStarsBarbara NivenBryan Mordechai JacksonJessica ClarkRebecca has a very unusual secret, one that not even her best friends know about. The last person on earth she expects to reveal it to is a high priced escort named Paris.
- DirectorNicole ConnStarsNecar ZadeganThunderbird DinwiddieGary WeeksFate brings two diversely different women together, and sets them on a collision course that will shatter their preconceived notions about love, life and the power of one's soul.Pretty good movie but something just didn't quite click for me, although I could see some people really loving it. Good acting and good chemistry between the two leads but the story leaves some things to be desired. The married woman falls for cool out-and-proud lesbian story is a bit cliche and I think Elena's character suffered from seemingly lacking feelings of guilt and any inner torment. I also think the whole part with the love guru and his interrupting narrations was unnecessary and didn't add anything of substance. The ending was also weird and rushed.
6/10 - DirectorNed FarrStarsDreya WeberParis P. PickardAnthony Michael JonesAn ex-marine returns to her hometown after Iraq and helps a 20 year old woman, who is otherwise facing prison, prepare for military boot camp.
- DirectorLéa PoolStarsPiper PeraboJessica ParéMischa BartonAfter starting at an upmarket boarding school, a teenage girl forms close friendships with her two older roommates. However, when she discovers that her new friends are lovers she finds herself caught in a complicated situation.I remember really not liking this and thinking it was so overhyped when I first watched it years ago. Maybe I'll rewatch it some day and see if I still feel this way.
- DirectorCéline SciammaStarsPauline AcquartLouise BlachèreAdèle HaenelAfter meeting at a local pool over their summer break, a love triangle forms between three adolescent girls, which proves difficult to sustain as they each desire the love of another.I remember really disliking this movie but that was years ago now and I can't recall anything specific so I might rewatch it at some point and reevaluate.
- DirectorJacob ChaseStarsDaniel CarlisleTodd KubrakEmily PeckTwo couples in their twenties, who are struggling to find substance and meaning in their lives and relationships, meet by happenstance in a New York City Irish tavern called The Four-Faced Liar.Pretty good. Enjoyed the relationship between the two women which had good build-up but found both the male lead characters really appalling and the fact that their behavior was never properly addressed and condemned in the narrative kinda irks me.
7/10 - DirectorTodd HaynesStarsCate BlanchettRooney MaraSarah PaulsonAn aspiring photographer develops an intimate relationship with an older woman in 1950s New York. This is such an iconic lesbian movie. I used to really love this movie but upon rewatching I just found myself not as invested as previously, maybe it's because I just read the book which is more in-depth and the romance develops over a longer amount of time (I really recommend it!) but something just didn't click for me. Don't get me wrong, it is still an excellent movie I just didn't find it quite as perfect as I did in the past.
9/10 - DirectorShamim SarifStarsLisa RaySheetal ShethParvin DabasA drama centered on two women who engage in a dangerous relationship during South Africa's apartheid era.
- DirectorKelli HerdStarsKeri Jo ChapmanTeresa GarrettDerrick SandersResidents of the fictional town of Azalea Springs, Texas go into a panic after a gay local says the town's water supply is what made him gay. This movie is kinda stupid but I just love it so much. It is fun and campy and I love the main romance.
8/10 - DirectorLee RoseStarsLeslie HopeWendy CrewsonD.W. MoffettAn unhappily married housewife and mother of two children (Leslie Hope) seperates from her husband and gets a new job where she developes a mutual attraction to her female boss (Wendy Crewson).Pretty okay but I found the love story lacked some of the build-up in the beginning as their romantic connection felt like it was more so told to the audience than showed. Also, some things just kinda resolved too easily in the end.
6/10 - DirectorMary Agnes DonoghueStarsKatherine HeiglTom WilkinsonLinda EmondJenny's parents and siblings are always trying to set her up with a man when she visits them. What they don't know is that she's already met the right person, her "roommate" Kitty, 5 years ago and she wants to marry her and start a family.5/10
- DirectorMika KaurismäkiStarsMalin BuskaSarah GadonMichael NyqvistTHE GIRL KING paints a portrait of the brilliant, extravagant Kristina of Sweden, queen from age six, who fights the conservative forces that are against her ideas to modernize Sweden and who have no tolerance for her awakening sexuality.
- DirectorRainer KaufmannStarsIna WeisseErika MarozsánUlrich NoethenSuccessful designer Marie has a loving husband and two children. But fate offers more. When she meets the fiancée of their friend Dom, the two women fall for each other. This comes out and life gets out of control. Can there be a long-term solution?

- DirectorPeter SollettStarsJulianne MooreElliot PageSteve CarellNew Jersey police lieutenant Laurel Hester and her registered domestic partner Stacie Andree battle to secure Hester's pension benefits when she is diagnosed with terminal cancer.
- DirectorLee FriedlanderStarsDesi LydicMike FarrellReginald VelJohnsonEver have an identity crisis? Tell a little white lie here and there, just to make everyone happy? Well, Alex Houston has got you beat, hands down. After telling her fiancé, Dana, that her entire family is dead, Manhattanite Alex whisks off to her childhood home in South Carolina to serve as bridesmaid at her high-maintenance, estranged sister Jeannie's wedding. As she tries not to steal Jeannie's thunder by telling her family that a) she's engaged, and b) the man she's going to marry is a Jewish African American, things get a little mixed up. For starters, Alex's sharp-tongued, mischievous best friend Jonathan unwittingly starts a rumor at the wedding that Alex is gay and Dana is a woman. When her family reacts in a surprisingly supportive way, Alex decides to go with it. It's easier than telling the truth, right? But when Alex and Jonathan decide to hire sexy lesbian Risa to act as her lover when Jeannie comes to visit Alex in New York, things really start to get out of hand. Director Lee Friedlander follows up her award-winning 2004 film "Girl Play" with this witty, farcical romp that explores the sometimes comically bumbling way in which we come out to the people we love - whether we're gay or straight. As she becomes increasingly entangled in her web of lies, Alex struggles to come to terms with her fiancé, her family and most of all herself along the way.
- DirectorKate JohnstonShauna MacDonaldStarsKate TrotterChristine HorneShauna MacDonaldA lesbian with commitment issues befriends a widowed mother who is visiting her workaholic daughter.

- DirectorEric SchaefferStarsMichael WelchMichelle HendleyAlexandra TurshenBoy Meets Girl is a funny, tender, sex positive romantic comedy that explores what it means to be a real man or woman, and how important it is to live a courageous life not letting fear stand in the way of going after your dreams.Trans rep.
Not really a lesbian movie. Has lesbian elements but main romance is girl/boy. - DirectorAngela RobinsonStarsSara FosterJordana BrewsterDevon AokiPlaid-skirted schoolgirls are groomed by a secret government agency to become the newest members of the elite national-defense group, D.E.B.S.One of my favorite movies of all time. It is super corny but so fun and charming.
10/10 - DirectorDonna DeitchStarsHelen ShaverPatricia CharbonneauAudra LindleyWhile waiting for her divorce papers, a repressed professor of literature is unexpectedly seduced by a carefree, spirited young lesbian.Beautiful movie and a real classic as this is probably the first movie of its kind. Not necessarily the first lesbian movie but probably the first pure lesbian romance with high production value.
9/10 - DirectorLucky McKeeChris SivertsonStarsSidney AllisonCharon R. ArnoldShay AstarA rebel girl signs up a group of cheerleaders to help her take down the captain of their high school football team, but a supernatural turn of events thrusts the girls into a different battle. So stupid and so flawed but I kinda love it.
7/10 - DirectorAlexandra KondrackeStarsLisa RieffelErin KellyMichelle LombardoThe story of five girls and one epic night. The girls will find love, lust, girl-fights, rock and roll, and a whole lot of stoned sorority girls.6/10
- DirectorAlice WuStarsJoan ChenMichelle KrusiecLynn ChenA gay Chinese-American and her traditionalist mother are reluctant to go public with secret loves that clash against cultural expectations.
- DirectorKerem SangaStarsDylan GelulaBrianna HildebrandMateo AriasSeventeen-year-old Anne just fell in love with Sasha, the most popular girl at her LA public high school. But when Anne tells her best friend Clifton - who has always harbored a secret crush - he does his best to get in the way.
- DirectorNicole ConnStarsTrisha ToddKaren TrumboFaith McDevittSet in the lush Pacific Northwest, Claire of the Moon tells a timeless story of a woman's struggle as she awakens to new possibilities for love and intimacy.Slow and mostly boring. The lack of story could be fine if the characters were more interesting but I find them pretty bland and basic with nothing out of the ordinary under the surface.
4/10 - DirectorLana WachowskiLilly WachowskiStarsJennifer TillyGina GershonJoe PantolianoTough ex-con Corky and her lover Violet concoct a scheme to steal millions of stashed mob money and pin the blame on Violet's crooked boyfriend Caesar.I freaking LOVE this movie. Part of what's so great about it is that it is not really ABOUT lesbians but the two main characters' lesbian relationship is still very prominent and essential to the story. It just strikes this balance perfectly. Although I love a good lesbian romance movie, it is just something nice about getting to watch another genre that still centers queer characters and queer identity (is this what it's like for straight people???). The lesbian rep aside, this is just a super well-made movie that manages to keep tensions high from start to finish.
10/10 - DirectorMaria MaggentiStarsLaurel HollomanNicole Ari ParkerMaggie MooreAn adventurous love story between two young women of different social and economic backgrounds who find themselves going through all the typical struggles of a new romance.
- DirectorAndy KirshnerDebbie WilliamsStarsJaclene WilkCara AnnMarieAlfrelynn J. RobertsThe squeaky-clean daughter of a "family values" preacher becomes a national political sensation and falls in love with her spin doctor -- another woman.Sweet and charming. It is fun and full of satire, not taking itself too seriously. My biggest complaint is that I think some more time should have been dedicated to fleshing out certain story moments and the ending felt kinda rushed.
7/10 - DirectorApril MullenStarsErika LinderNatalie KrillSebastian PigottAn unexpected affair quickly escalates into a heart-stopping reality for two women whose passionate connection changes their lives forever.I remember really not liking this but was too long ago to say for certain what I think now. I do remember there being a lot of sex though so if that's your thing this is a movie for you.
- DirectorJames KentStarsMaxine PeakeAnna MadeleySusan LynchA look at the life of 19th-century Yorkshire landowner Anne Lister (1791-1840), who lived openly as a lesbian and kept diaries chronicling the details of her daily life.
- DirectorAlex SichelStarsAlison FollandTara SubkoffCole HauserClaude and Ellen are best friends who live in a not-so-nice area of New York. They're involved in the subculture of '90s youth, complete with drugs, live music, and homophobia. All is changed one night when a violent, meaningless death rocks their lives.

- DirectorMarina Rice BaderDreya WeberStarsDreya WeberThunderbird DinwiddieDavid HaywardA lesbian love story about loss, nature, and healing.
- DirectorSebastián LelioStarsRachel WeiszRachel McAdamsAlessandro NivolaA woman returns to her Orthodox Jewish community that shunned her for her attraction to a female childhood friend. Once back, their passions reignite as they explore the boundaries of faith and sexuality.

- DirectorAngela RobinsonStarsLuke EvansRebecca HallBella HeathcoteThe story of psychologist William Moulton Marston, and his polyamorous relationship with his wife and their mistress who would inspire his creation of the superheroine, Wonder Woman.Polyamory including a man. Based on the true story of the creator of Wonder Woman.
9/10 - DirectorSpencer MaybeeStarsElise BaumanNatasha NegovanlisAnnie Briggs5 years after they vanquished the apocalypse and Carmilla became human, Laura is a journalist. Then Carmilla begins to show signs of "re-vamping" while Laura has started having bizarre dreams. Sounds like a new supernatural threat.
- DirectorYorgos LanthimosStarsOlivia ColmanEmma StoneRachel WeiszIn early 18th-century England, the status quo at the court is upset when a new servant arrives and endears herself to a frail Queen Anne.
- DirectorClea DuVallStarsKristen StewartMackenzie DavisMary SteenburgenA holiday romantic comedy that captures the range of emotions tied to wanting your family's acceptance, being true to yourself, and trying not to ruin Christmas.I find this movie very over-hyped and even though I am glad we finally have a big-budget lesbian Rom-Com, I found the plot contrived and the way one of the leads acts and lies makes it hard to like her or rout for the relationship. For a good lesbian Rom-Com, I would rather watch Imagine Me and You.
5/10 - DirectorAlice WuStarsLeah LewisDaniel DiemerAlexxis LemireWhen smart but cash-strapped teen Ellie Chu agrees to write a love letter for a jock, she doesn't expect to become his friend - or fall for his crush.
- DirectorRyan MurphyStarsMeryl StreepJames CordenNicole KidmanA troupe of hilariously self-obsessed theater stars swarm into a small conservative Indiana town in support of a high-school girl who wants to take her girlfriend to the prom.
- DirectorJ BlakesonStarsRosamund PikePeter DinklageEiza GonzálezA crooked legal guardian who drains the savings of her elderly wards meets her match when a woman she tries to swindle turns out to be more than she first appears. Not really lesbian-focused. Features main lesbian character with girlfriend but the story is not about sexuality or romance.
- DirectorFrancis LeeStarsKate WinsletSaoirse RonanGemma Jones1840s England, acclaimed but overlooked fossil hunter Mary Anning and a young woman sent to convalesce by the sea develop an intense relationship, altering both of their lives forever. The slow pace makes it feel like almost nothing happens and some story elements like her former lover and sick mother felt underdeveloped and just kinda there for no reason. The ending was ambiguous in way that didn't really do it for me.
5/10 - DirectorTrish DoolanStarsMaria CinaTrish DoolanFrank GrilloAlex is throwing a wedding shower for April. What's revealed at this wacky party, though, is that the two women have a history that goes beyond mere friendship.Completely bonkers comedy. Pretty fun and light-hearted but also filled with problems. The part that really irks me is one of the women has an obsessive stalker who although his behavior is initially condemned (but not treated seriously enough) in the end she gets together with him for no real reason, excusing his honestly terrifying behavior.
6/10 - DirectorPeter JacksonStarsMelanie LynskeyKate WinsletSarah PeirseTwo teenage girls share a unique bond; their parents, concerned that the friendship is too intense, separate them, and the girls take revenge. It is a fine movie but wouldn't really recommend it to anyone looking for a lesbian film as it is dark and kind of accidentally plays into the "psycho lesbians" trope. It is based on the real 1954 Parker–Hulme murder case and centers the two girls involved and their theorized lesbian relationship.
5/10 - DirectorJohn SaylesStarsLinda GriffithsJane HallarenJon DeVriesA happily married woman comes to realize herself of being a repressed lesbian after she has an affair with a female college professor, and then tries to come to terms with her newfound lifestyle.I don't see this movie mentioned much so I wanted to put a spotlight on it here. What I love about this movie is how real it feels and the way it doesn't overdramatize things. Sure, Lianna's sexuality is portrayed as being a struggle and people in her life have a hard time with it but it is not this great overdramatic tragedy, it just feels real. I find it especially great for a lesbian movie released in the early 80s.
10/10 - DirectorLeontine SaganCarl FroelichStarsDorothea WieckHertha ThieleEmilia UndaAt an all-girls boarding school, Manuela falls in love with a teacher, to terrific consequences.Iconic as it is the first lesbian movie but hard to get past the uncomfortable feeling of a teacher/student romance especially with Manuela only being 14. This is somewhat mitigated by it being mostly one-sided from Manuela's part but the subtext for her feelings being returned are nevertheless there.
- DirectorGéza von RadványiStarsLilli PalmerRomy SchneiderTherese GiehseIn a strict Prussian boarding school for girls, sensitive student Manuela von Meinhardis develops a forbidden love to one of her teachers, the compassionate Elisabeth von Bernburg. This is very similar to the 1931 movie but if anything makes von Bernburg's (the teacher) returned feelings for Manuela even less ambiguous. This does boost the movie somewhat as there's even more tension between the leads but doesn't help with the uncomfortable nature of their age gap. It is somewhat helped by Manuela's age not being right-out stated meaning you can imagine her at the very least older than 14 but is still extremely uncomfortable.
- DirectorAnnabel JankelStarsBilly BoydGregor SelkirkAnna PaquinIn 1950s small town Britain, a doctor develops a relationship with her young patient's mother.Beautiful movie, loved almost everything about it.
9/10 - DirectorChanya ButtonStarsGemma ArtertonElizabeth DebickiIsabella RosselliniThe fascinating true story of the love affair between socialite and popular author Vita Sackville-West and literary icon Virginia Woolf.Somewhat lackluster and underwhelming in my opinion.
5/10 - DirectorSteven WoodcockStarsBarbara MartenAndrina CarrollAndrew DunnSet in Northern England, this powerful tale of suppressed sexuality offers poignant and sharply observant social commentary, interlaced with a tender romance. Vetern actress Barbara Marten tugs at the heart as Ellen Hardy, a working-class mother unhappily married to Geoff and struggling with her feelings for another woman - her 10-year-old son's vivacious teacher, Kathy Thompson.Beautiful movie about the friendship between two women in the 50s developing into something more. Possibly a bit too subtle but still effective.
8/10 - DirectorNicole ConnStarsZoe VentouraKayla RadomskiCale FerrinA female FBI agent befriends a woman and her adorable, young, special needs son who live in the countryside. The women's friendship soon turns into romance but family secrets complicate things.I feel like this movie is trying to do too many things at the same time. It really would have been enough with Max getting away after the death of her mother whom she was really close to and Sam's struggles with taking care of her sick son. Adding in all the FBI stuff and the long-lost mother plot felt unnecessary and time-wasting. I also would have liked more time to sit with the new relationship before everything blew up. Overall, a sweet story and not a bad movie but with some problems.
6/10 - DirectorMikki del MonicoStarsAnnabella SciorraBilly WirthNatalie KneppTwo girls. One gun. The Mob. Because coming out to family is hard. But coming out to "family" is funny.Pretty underrated movie. Bonus: has some really good kissing.
8/10 - DirectorJulius SevcíkStarsCarice van HoutenHanna AlströmClaes BangLiesel Landauer and her friend Hana are linked by a lifelong relationship and an exceptional house built by the architect Von Abt for Liesel and her husband Viktor in Czechoslovakia in the early 1930s.Great movie. Found it a little bit slow in the middle where I think it could have benefited from switching between the two perspectives more in some instances as it felt a bit jarring that Liesel went from essentially the main character to being mostly absent for a long time. Still a good and effective movie.
8/10 - DirectorJerry ThorpeStarsGena RowlandsJane AlexanderNed BeattyA woman fights her ex-husband for custody of her children when he sues for custody after learning that she is living in a relationship with another woman.I am pretty amazed this movie was able to be made and aired on TV at the time it was and it is in many ways still a good movie. However, I found the pacing a bit off and at times I felt like some parts were just missing. I feel it would have benefitted from exploring some areas more. It did go by pretty quickly though which made it a pretty easy watch.
6/10 - DirectorStacey N. HardingStarsMelora HardinArienne MandiKatherine McNamaraEmilia, a romance novelist, returns home after a long absence to reconnect with her children who are also finding their own paths to love.Pretty cute movie. It is pretty conventional and predictable but it is not like it pretends not to be. It is the exact thing you want and expect from a Hallmark Rom-Com and it is nice to finally have a movie like that featuring a lesbian romance.
7/10 - DirectorBruno BarretoStarsGlória PiresMiranda OttoTracy MiddendorfA chronicle of the tragic love affair between American poet Elizabeth Bishop and Brazilian architect Lota de Macedo Soares.Pretty good although I thought at times it moved a bit fast past certain events or glossed over stuff. In particular I found the start of the two leads' relationship a bit too quick and lacking of build-up but it is easy to look past as it is just a small part of a longer story.
8/10 - DirectorJane AndersonMartha CoolidgeAnne HecheStarsVanessa RedgraveMarian SeldesPaul GiamattiTrio of stories about lesbian couples in three different decades.Pretty good movie following three different storylines in three different times all featuring lesbians. The first one was really strong and outshines the others but they are all worth watching.
7/10 - DirectorAnne WheelerStarsWendy CrewsonKaryn DwyerChristina CoxMaggie, 19, works at a lesbian/LGBT bookstore. Her mom's getting divorced and has invited herself to stay with Maggie. Maggie hasn't told her, she's lesbian. Her new girlfriend moves in as well.Pretty cute movie although I found myself actually more invested in other characters than the two leads and their romance. Some things I did not like were the small subplot of an adult woman seducing a 17-year-old boy as well as the transgender character being played by a cis man.
6/10 - DirectorAdam RodgersStarsMelinda MullinsTamara TunieCaitlin DulanyNurse Toni is engaged to be married. However, she begins to confront her increasing desire for women and lack of desire for her OB/GYN fiancé Ralph. This is a really stupid movie but I really enjoyed it.
8/10 - DirectorJames IvoryStarsChristopher ReeveVanessa RedgraveJessica TandyA Boston feminist and a conservative Southern lawyer contend for the heart and mind of a beautiful and bright girl unsure of her future. Not only is this an awful movie to watch if you are looking for lesbian movies in particular but I could never really get into the movie regardless. I have a hard time articulating why I disliked it so much, I guess I just found the relationships lacking and the characters' motivations rather forced and unmotivated. Like, both Verena and Olive's connection and Verena's strong feelings for Mr. Ransom felt lacking of build-up or reason and only driven by the plot.
2/10 - DirectorLisa Rose SnowStarsElise BaumanTattiawna JonesWendy CrewsonAlma and Charlie cross paths with each other, when Charlie finds the perfect tree for the Maine Governor's Holiday Celebration right in Alma's back yard.Just a cute and typical Christmas-themed Rom-Com except the two leads are both women. It is cheesy and predictable but it is supposed to be that. I really liked that both are just out and sexuality is not at all an issue. Just the fact that the parents were completely in the know and supportive felt so refreshing, it made me realize how rare that is to see other movies.
7/10 - DirectorSuzanne GuacciStarsKristen RentonKaty SullivanKaren SillasA visiting home health aide and recovering alcoholic strives to rebuild her broken life, only to have it fall apart once again when she falls in love with her young, paraplegic patient, and betrays her trust.I am a bit split on this movie. Overall I enjoyed it and find the general rating way too low, but I do have some issues with it. I did find that while other parts of the story were well-done, the love story could have been a little more fleshed out, especially towards the end where it felt like it was just put on pause for a while whilst the rest of the story played out. I also think it could have focused more on Laura and fleshed out her character a bit more. The whole movie is named after her condition and yet she is basically a secondary character. I still liked it and in particular liked the portrayal of Kate and her past alcoholism which felt real without succumbing to the cliche melodrama of relapse.
7/10 - DirectorJulia DyerStarsConnie NelsonDee HenniganGary Mitchell CarterHigh School basketball coach, Dinah Groshardt, falls for the school secretary, Carly Lumpkin, and upsets the entire school in the process.I love this more so much! It is definitely not a technically perfect movie and has many flaws but I just found it super charming and fun and with a lot of heart. Also, one thing I really like about this movie is that the two women falling in love really seem like two ordinary women, not some supermodels. It helps making it feel more real and grounded even with some of the more bizarre elements of the story.
A really small detail that I really like is that during the PTA meeting not literally everyone is against the couple. That, even though the loud majority is against them, some people have different views makes it feel more real and less cartoonish even if it is dramatized.
9/10 - DirectorAndrew WilligStarsAlexandra VoicuNathalie J. CernyMichelle BrezinskiWhen a demanding lover inspires her to write, an idle woman must fake the relationship in order to complete her new book.Low budget but not letting it get in its way. This is a pretty unconventional movie which didn't really do it for me but I can see other people liking it.
4/10 - DirectorLiz GillStarsSean CampionFlora MontgomeryStuart GrahamA light-hearted look at the dangers and delights of dating in contemporary DublinI found it a very mediocre movie, falls into stereotypes a bit with the two bisexual characters being the only ones wanting open relationships. Features multiple couples of different sexualities, including four wlw characters.
4/10 - DirectorMadeleine OlnekStarsLisa HaasSusan ZieglerJackie MonahanThe adventures of lesbian space aliens on the planet Earth, and the story of the romance between Jane, a shy greeting card store employee, and Zoinx, the woman Jane does not realize is from outer-space. Meanwhile, two government agents, or 'Men In Black, ' are closely tracking Jane and the aliens while harboring their own secrets.A delightfully absurd and funny comedy. Well-made and acted and a spot-on parody of sci-fi movies with some really funny jokes, both spoken and visual. I could see how this movie wouldn't be for everyone but it is a fun light-hearted romp that is worth giving a shot if you find it.
7/10 - DirectorMonica ZanettiStarsMarta DusseldorpZoe TerakesSophie Hawkshaw17 year old Ellie is struggling to find the courage to ask her classmate, Abbie, to the formal. Luckily her Aunt Tara, a lesbian who died in the 80's has shown up as a "Fairy Godmother" to dish out advice, whether Ellie wants it or not.Really sweet and touching film. My one criticism is that I feel the connection between Ellie and her aunt was a little weak, like they hadn't really had time to bond before they fell out which weakened the impact of that somewhat.
7/10 - DirectorNouchka van BrakelStarsMonique van de VenMaria SchneiderMarijke MerckensYoung mother of two Eva is send on holiday to France by her husband to relief her stress. There she meets lesbian Liliane who lives in a commune.Enjoyable movie with a touching story that felt real. It is especially progressive for its time with its commentary on a homophobic society and a mother losing her children simply due to her sexuality. I always get a bit wary when watching older films with these subjects as they often are a product of their time and will sometimes take an overly sympathetic view of the homophobes or even right-out agree with them but the portrayal here was good and overall this movie has aged very well.
8/10 - DirectorCampbell XStarsT'Nia MillerKyle TresloveRobyn KerrJJ is a 'Stud' Lesbian. Together with her best friend Seb, a gay pretty boy, they work as wedding photographers. When JJ falls in love with a beautiful diva, JJ and Seb's friendship is tested. JJ is forced to chose between her hot new lover and her best friend.I wanted to like this movie but just struggled to care. I found the conflicts all very forced and therefore not engaging and didn't really care at all for the main romance especially since I found both characters' actions kinda unreasonable at times and they came across as unlikeable.
5/10 - DirectorAlbert ZugsmithStarsCarol YoungYvonne D'AngersAlyn DarnayA pretty young girl named Sappho is, despite her boyfriend's best efforts, determined to remain a virgin until she marries. One day she picks up a beautiful, busty hitchhiker named Brigitte, and finds herself attracted to the sexy young blonde.I don't know how to rate this movie. It is not good by any means but I guess it is interesting from a historical perspective as it is rare with lesbian-themed movies this old and as it is part of a pretty much dead genre. It is not listed as such anywhere but I am pretty sure this would be classed as a sexploitation movie which makes rating it slightly harder for me as most of what happens in the movie is there mostly to be shocking and sexually titulating. The story is not really the main concern. But yeah, the story is unengaging, the characters pretty bland and the acting is subpar.
3/10 - DirectorMichelle EhlenStarsJen McPhersonMichelle EhlenKeye ChenA self-proclaimed "ex-lesbian," Jill hunts down her ex-girlfriend Jamie to prove to herself that she is no longer attracted to her. "Heterosexual Jill" is a satire about sexuality where nothing is as it seems.(Actually kinda a sequel to Butch Jamie but works perfectly well as a stand-alone)
A cute and charming romantic comedy that doesn't take itself at all seriously, still has some issues though and felt a bit rushed in the ending. I was not a huge fan of the side characters' side plot though.
7/10 - DirectorMichelle EhlenStarsJen McPhersonMichelle EhlenShaela CookLesbian couple Jamie and Jill explore the underground world of S&M while their friends David and Lola compete to see who's cool enough to go through with a threesome.(Sequel to Heterosexual Jill. Also works fine as a stand-alone but helps to have some backstory on the central relationship to have watched Heterosexual Jill first. Also, gives you a better reason to care about the side characters)
As opposed to what the majority seem to think I didn't like this as much as the prior movie. I think it works as a sequel as it is good to have confirmed that Jill and Jamie got together after the last movie (although it was already heavily implied) and fun to continue following them although I don't see it holding as much value if you haven't seen Heterosexual Jill. Still a fun and charming comedy.
6/10 - DirectorChristoffer SandlerStarsNikki HansebladMelina Benett PaukkonenEmil AlgpeusWhile desperately trying to find ways to get her ADHD medication, 18-year-old Joanna is trying to figure out her newfound feelings towards her classmate Audrey, but also towards herself.Lovely movie with great performance from the lead actress. Especially loved seeing such a great portrayal of ADHD which managed to both show the struggles of the condition while not talking down to the people who have it or portray it as a 100% tragedy to live with. It was also conveyed really well using audio and visuals in the film to make it easier for the audience to put themselves in Joanna's shoes.
8/10 - DirectorNancy KissamStarsLaura HarringJill Marie JonesOded FehrAn abused wife's plan to escape her husband goes awry when she accidentally kills him, causing her to split on a cross-country drive with her best friend and his corpse in tow.I think categorizing this simply as a comedy is kinda wrong, I would rather call it satire or dark comedy. It has a certain type of humor that won't be everyone's thing but I actually really liked it. It was fun and even though it is extremely nonsensical it still felt like it had heart and it managed to make you care about the characters by the end.
7/10 - DirectorKaren WilkensSusan FlanneryStarsPaul BarberNadia BjorlinCrystal ChappellThe Grove tells the love story of Nico Moynahan (Crystal Chappell) and Ivy Rodriquez (Jessica Leccia). This is technically a pilot episode for a web show that was never made which means that a lot of things are left rather underdeveloped and I feel like there is a feeling of "why should I care about these characters" around a lot of the cast. This makes this hard to rank. And let's be honest here, this has pretty much only value as it starts Crystal Chappell and Jessica Leccia (from the Otalia storyline and Venice the Series) and although I love seeing them together as a huge Otalia fan, it is just not enough to carry the movie.
5/10 - DirectorEmma SeligmanStarsRachel SennottAyo EdebiriRuby CruzTwo unpopular queer high-school students start a fight club to have sex before graduation. This felt hard to rate for me. It is a satire of a teen movie and kinda subverts the classic concept of a couple of teen guys coming up with some morally dubious scheme to "trick" hot girls to date and usually sleep with them, by making the main characters two gay women. This is a concept I really like and a genre I usually enjoy but it just didn't go all the way for me for some reason. Maybe it was because the jokes mostly fell flat for me or because I never really connected with the characters. It was not bad but not as good as I wanted it to be either.
6/10 - DirectorSammi CohenStarsRowan BlanchardAuli'i CravalhoIsabella FerreiraAn aspiring young artist joins her high school track team and later discovers what real love feels like when she finds herself falling for an unexpected teammate.Cute movie and I like that we got a movie like this (kinda stereotypical teen comedy/romance) with a lesbian main character. For the genre that it is, it is great. There were some of the more comedic aspects (in particular the overly sex-positive mother and the school administartion in general comes to mind) that didn't really hit the mark for me but it's not a deal breaker. I think it was pretty perfect for what it was although I think that I've maybe grown out of these types of movies a bit but I few years ago I probably would have absolutely loved it.
