- DirectorD.W. GriffithStarsAnthony O'SullivanGertrude RobinsonCharles WestCharlie Lee, the poor chink, is the hero of this Biograph story. Having located at Golden Gulch as a laundryman, his old father is about to take his leave for his home in the Flowery Kingdom. Before going the old man warns his son to cherish his sacred queue, for should he lose that he would be an outcast and disbarred from returning to his country, which every Chinaman who leaves, looks forward to doing. His father gone, the chink feels very much alone and low spirited, for though a saffron-skinned Pagan, his soul is white and real red blood pulsates his heart. He takes up a basket of laundry work to deliver and on the road is made to feel the result of two thousand years of civilization, for while passing a gang of cowboys, they pull his pigtail, threaten to cut it off, and roughly handle him until rescued by Bud Miller and his sweetheart, Miss Dean. For this intervention the chink is deeply grateful, and when Gentleman Jack, the dandy, tries to cut Bud Miller out in Miss Mean's affection, Charlie, the chink, keeps his eyes open. Through this the Dandy and Bud come to blows, but are separated by the boys. However, the chink hears the dandy threaten to do Bud at first meeting. The chink resolves to save his friend at any cost. The excitement at the Gulch is the repeated hold-ups of the registered mail carrier, and the effectual evasion of capture of the robber. A reward of $5,000 for his capture is posted, and the attitude of the dandy towards the notice arouses the chink's suspicion, hence he follows him like a shadow. His efforts prove fruitful, for he is a witness to the dandy's operations, who, disguising himself, makes his way to a lonely spot in the road and holds up the mail carrier. At a distance he views the dandy change his disguise and lay out on the ground to rest and gloat over his success. Here stands the poor chink apparently helpless. He is unarmed and with nothing with which to secure his captive. There, lays the dandy with his hands clasped above his head. All that is needed is a hit of rope. A thought strikes the chink, but what a sacrifice it means. A sacrifice which will make him forever an outcast. There is no other way, so whipping out a knife, he with one slash cuts off the sacred queue and binds the dandy's hands so quickly that he is taken into the camp before he knows what has occurred. After the excitement of his deed is over, the poor Chinaman then realizes what his condition really is. The reward he receives is made use of in an unlooked-for way. When the sweethearts go to his shack they find a note which reads: "Missie Dean alsame Bud Miller too. Charlie Lee wishee much glad you two when alsame one. Hope take money for blidel plesent. Goodby. Charlie Lee went away." With the note is the bag containing the $5,000, but the chink could not be found.
- DirectorD.W. GriffithStarsArthur V. JohnsonLinda ArvidsonGladys EganIn this story set at a seaside fishing village and inspired by a Charles Kingsley poem, a young couple's happy life is turned about by an accident. The husband, although saved from drowning, loses his memory. A child is on the way, and soon a daughter is born to his wife. We watch the passage of time, as his daughter matures and his wife ages. The daughter becomes a lovely young woman, herself ready for marriage. One day on the beach, the familiarity of the sea and the surroundings triggers a return of her father's memory, and we are reminded that although people age and change, the sea and the ways of the fisherfolk remain eternal.

The charming miss strolls with him and he tells her of his undying love and vows to live for her alone. As he leaves her at her home and strolls away her former lover comes along and, seeing them together, remonstrates with the girl, but she coldly tells him that it is all over between them and that she loves another. The next day Frederick meets the girl again and proposes to her and she accepts him, and immediately he takes her to his home to introduce her to his parents, who are a trifle demure in receiving her, knowing his treatment to his former faithful little sweetheart. Everything bids fair for their happiness when the maiden's cast-off lover appears and sends in for Frederick, and upon meeting him presents him with a letter which he had received from her telling him that he was the only man she ever loved. Frederick takes the letter and when he confronts the girl with it she coolly admits her authorship of the missive, and immediately he becomes distracted and denounces her and orders her from the house. She leaves the place and returns to her former sweetheart, while poor Frederick's life is wrecked, for in his heart he loves her with a supernatural love and everywhere he goes he sees her beaming face before him.
- DirectorChristy CabanneD.W. GriffithStarsRobert HarronW. Chrystie MillerDorothy GishOftentime it has been proved that the own children of a family have proved less loving and considerate than those who have been adopted. And so it was in the case of the adopted brother of this family. He became the sole support, while the old gray-haired father sat by the fire, the young daughter looked after the house and the degenerate brother went off to the saloon with his questionable companions. The money for his debauches was often supplied by the adopted young brother. The brother has just left for the saloon, and the adopted son follows him to the village, just in time to see the drunken crowd throw a stranger out of the saloon. He is jestingly known as the "book-writer," and his drunken debauches are the talk of the good people and the abuse of those of his kind. The boy befriends the author by taking him to his cabin. Here while he sleeps off his drunken stupor, the boy reads some of the manuscripts lying on the table. When the author awakens the boy seeks to encourage him into a fresh start and begins to arouse new courage in the writer. Meanwhile back in the saloon there is another fight. A drunken farmer coming out is met by one of his former hands who demands the pay that is coming to him. The farmer underpaid the man. There is a struggle between the two and a large roll of bills is displayed. The degenerate brother and his friends coming out of the saloon see the money and decide to follow the man and rob him. They do this. The boy returning home from the author's cabin comes upon them and is an unwilling witness to their crime. They see him, and pursuing him into the nearby bushes they threaten and abuse him until he agrees to keep silent. As he is passing the sheriff's house he sees the man who had been robbed on the porch while the hand who had previously quarreled with him is also there and being accused of the crime. A strong sense of rebellion against his degenerate brother arises in the boy's mind. All his life the other man has made people suffer. The boy decides to stand by the truth and he goes to the sheriff and tells him the true story of the crime. Thus the degenerate brother and his friend are brought to justice. Some time later while they are working on the stone heap not far from the prison a fight arises between an unruly prisoner and a guard. It is an opportunity they have long been looking for and they make good their escape. Successful in evading the guards, they hide under a rocky cliff. Presently upon the height above they see two men fighting; one renders the other unconscious and the two convicts see in this a chance to cover their own tracks. They steal up behind the two men and rob them of their clothes. In their new garb their first thought is for vengeance on the adopted brother who had been the cause of all their suffering. They seek him at the home, but he is bidding goodbye to the author, who is leaving that locality, a changed man, due entirely to the boy's influence. They intimidate the girl into telling his whereabouts, but on their departure she goes to the house to find the boy. She meets him on the street returning from the author. The two convicts, however, had seen him from a distance, and jumping on two horses they find by the roadside they follow in quick pursuit. The girl runs for the sheriff and the chase continues. The author on the outside of the town, however, had stopped to rest. The boy, followed by the two convicts, pass by on their horses. He takes in the situation at a glance and following after the two he reaches them just as they are about to fall upon the boy. In the struggle he kills one and he himself is shot by another. The other convict falls into the hands of the sheriff. Thus the good done another returns to the boy and frustrates the evil design that was to be perpetrated against him for the price of a life.
