- DirectorJared BushByron HowardCharise Castro SmithStarsStephanie BeatrizMaría Cecilia BoteroJohn LeguizamoA Colombian teenage girl has to face the frustration of being the only member of her family without magical powers.First movie of the year!!! Really good movie. Gorgeous animation and art direction, good representation from what I've heard, and one of the best stories about family I've seen in a movie for kids the metaphor is very well utilized. I wish that they hadn't treated Bruno as comic relief, though, because it was super fucked up what they did to him. If I was trapped in the walls for 10 years because of my family, personally, I would become like the joker.
- DirectorHarold RamisStarsBrendan FraserElizabeth HurleyFrances O'ConnorHopeless dweeb Elliot Richards is granted seven wishes by the Devil to snare Allison, the girl of his dreams, in exchange for his soul. This movie is like, not very good all things considering, but its fun I enjoyed it something about Brendan Fraser selling his soul to the devil was getting to me. I'm also obsessed with the portrayal of the devil in it, though, there's smth wrong with her and it's neat that God is just kind of some guy. one of the scenes is like extremely homophobic it caught me so off guard its so funny there's this scene where he wishes to be smart and articulate and attractive but when brendan fraser brings his girl back to his bed there's a man in there and he finds out he's gay after he kisses her and he isn't into it and takes his wish back and its SO FUNNY that this guy would rather not have any money or speaking skills than be gay like the catch of the wish isn't anything clever its literally just that he's gay noW
- DirectorBlake EdwardsStarsBruce WillisJames GarnerMalcolm McDowellTom Mix and Wyatt Earp team up to solve a murder at the Academy Awards in 1929 Hollywood.Pretty movie. Entertaining, the "vibes" or whatever are immaculate. They turned Bruce Willis into Fruit Willis, which was the gender envy I never expected to get from any character played by him. It was a pretty good period piece, too.I like the way that the stunts are done when someone punches Bruce Willis and it makes a cartoonish sound effect and then cuts to him getting launched across the room it's really funny. I'm not really sure about the treatment of women in it, but unfortunately that is not uncommon in movies made in the 80s. It was pretty girlboss of them to have lesbians, though, and for it not to be fetishized or demonized. Overall, movie's a bit cheesy, nothing deep, but that's ok, I enjoyed it. I'm probably not going to rewatch it anytime, though, because I think this is one of those movies that on second watch I won't like nearly as much.
- DirectorPenelope SpheerisStarsMike MyersDana CarveyRob LoweTwo slacker friends try to promote their public-access cable show. This movie is extremely funny I can't believe it took me so long to watch it. I'm going to make all my friends watch it with me, too, eventually (though Peter PLEASE REMEMEBER that there is a scene with a snake so that you can tell Christian to look away!!!! It's the part where Cassandra and Benjamin are in Chicago). This is definitely one I'm going to end up rewatching a bunch of times in the future lol. It also reminded me of my utter inability to recognize Michael Myer in anything everytime I see him in a different role he looks like a completely different person and I didn't realize that was him until the credits rolled.
- DirectorMartin McDonaghStarsFrances McDormandWoody HarrelsonSam RockwellA mother personally challenges the local authorities to solve her daughter's murder when they fail to catch the culprit.Visually, this movie was great. I was really not a fan of everything else, though. It was extremely heavyhanded and hamfisted in terms of its politics. It was way too much all the time it's just like yeah Yeah, I get it, god damn!! Definitely felt like Oscar bait as well. I also didn't like the way that it talked about certain topics at all though lol and the usage of the fslur, rslur, and nslur were unnecessary when it didn't take the time to address any of those subjects properly. The rslur especially was thrown around where it didn't belong even by the main character who we were supposed to feel sympathetic towards. The way it talked about racism was also bad. The only 2 black characters are the black best friend and the black police officer, neither who are given a real voice in the story. Any of the shallow takes about racism are given through the white characters and then brushed off. At the end of the movie we’re supposed to look at Sam Rockwell's character and be like “oh look this guy redeemed himself he's learned his lesson even though people don't forgive him” which like cool but also they completely did not address that he like was mentioned to have TORTURED black people when he was a cop??? They just mention that and it's never brought up again. It's beyond frustrating. I also did not appreciate the usage of dwarfism as a gag joke, which this director has done before in In Bruges. I did not like this movie.
- DirectorJohn WebbStarsDrew FullerAlexandra BreckenridgeTimothy Lee DePriestBased on the true story of the murder of a girl's parents in Eustis, FL (USA), five teens in a vampire cult on the run are captured by police in New Orleans, LA and tell their tale of how they got there. This movie was really fucking funny. Like don't get me wrong, it sucks that this is based off a true story and the actual movie is not good, but like it was bad in a so bad it's hilarious way. I kept wanting to take clips from it to send to people because of how many funny bad scenes there are. This is also one I'll be showing to people in the future because it's really funny the acting is horrendous. I especially want to watch it with apartment 2023 and Allison.
- DirectorTim BurtonMike JohnsonStarsJohnny DeppHelena Bonham CarterEmily WatsonWhen a shy groom practices his wedding vows in the inadvertent presence of a deceased young woman, she rises from the grave assuming he has married her.I finally got around to watching this with Dahlia! It was fun calling with Dahlia again and watching a movie since we haven't done that in a while and this is one of buns favorite movies. It's really pretty, which isn't news to anyone. It was fun.
I don't like Victor, though, if he were real we wouldn't be friends. Victoria and Emily should have ditched his wishywashy ass and gotten married to each other instead. - DirectorSidney HayersStarsAnton DiffringErika RembergYvonne MonlaurDr. Rossiter, a plastic surgeon wanted by the police, flees to France and under an assumed name acquires, by murder, a run-down circus. His first recruit is a woman criminal. He transforms her face by surgery and trains her. This movie provided me with something I didn't know I needed until now: video footage of a French man being chased by a Gorilla
It was okay lol I kept waiting for something extra scary or wacky to happen, but it never did. It was just this guy being a dick the entire movie. "Circus of Horrors" wasn't really horror-like, this guy's just abusive. I don't really know what I wanted out of this movie, though, so I'm not sure why I was disappointed. - DirectorDario ArgentoStarsJessica HarperStefania CasiniFlavio BucciAn American newcomer to a prestigious German ballet academy comes to realize that the school is a front for something sinister amid a series of grisly murders.Maybe I would have liked this movie more if I watched it in the original Italian, but Tubi only had the English dub and I was too lazy to go anywhere else. This movie visually goes crazy. It's beautiful, especially in terms of the set design and the coloring, Lord. The soundtrack is amazing, too. Goblin once again is one of my favorite soundtrack composers of all time. The blood effects, though, are some of the worst shit I've seen in my life. This didn't take away from the actual quality of the movie, but it is really funny. Before I'd seen this, I assumed that the original would be better than the remake, but after seeing this, I think I will like the remake better. It's pretty good, but it is extremely unpolished and I think it being remade into something with a higher production value, a bigger budget, and more runtime was a really good idea and I'm looking forward to watching it.
- DirectorLuca GuadagninoStarsChloë Grace MoretzTilda SwintonDoris HickA darkness swirls at the center of a world-renowned dance company, one that will engulf the artistic director, an ambitious young dancer, and a grieving psychotherapist. Some will succumb to the nightmare. Others will finally wake up.I liked certain things in this movie better than the original and certain things worse. The soundtrack in this was significantly less good because rather than the iconic Goblin soundtrack the soundtrack was composed by Thom Yorke's sweaty ass so it was like Radiohead but bad. It also ditched the really beautiful and extravagant and interesting set pieces and colors, which I kept waiting to appear again at some point in the movie, but it never did, which was unfortunate because with a bigger budget and production team it could have been really cool. It definitely benefited from a remake, though, it was very different and more interesting in my opinion story and characterwise. The choices they took with it were bold and in my opinion well executed. Sometimes it definitely felt like they were doing a little bit too much with the shock value stuff, but overall it was good. The way that body horror was used with dance was really unique I thought it was cool. I also thought it was interesting the way that the story changed so much to fit the setting of a split Germany, which I was at first skeptical about as a choice but after seeing the way that it's used as a historical piece and a critique on authoritative structures, I respect it a lot. Susie is a lot more interesting of a character in this. Personality wise, she's still a bit bland, but the way it's used here is it makes her a perfect puppet for the coven to use, and she gradually gives into it. In the original, her character is static throughout the entire film. Basically, good movie, even though the music was bad and it made me feel a bit squeamish at times (particularly the broken bones parts... yuck). If the story of this movie was combined with the aesthetic and sound of the original, that shit would go crazy.
edit: i just found out this shit is by the director who made call me by your name and another movie sexualizing minors (melissa p). no thank you!!!!! - DirectorJoel CoenEthan CoenStarsJeff BridgesJohn GoodmanJulianne MooreJeff "The Dude" Lebowski, mistaken for a millionaire of the same name, seeks restitution for his ruined rug and enlists his bowling buddies to help get it.First rewatch of the year! Me and Katie watched this together for the first time since her 18th birthday 2 years ago because a couple days ago we were talking about a Big Lebowski au of Naoki Urusawa's Monster and it was fresh on my mind. This movie is really funny and I like it a lot. Very few movies make me LOL (Laugh Out Loud), but this one does. My only real complaint is that the treatment of Asian people is extremely questionable.
I also remembered the horrendous Big Lebowski reference that was in My Little Pony where they're there in the bowling alley as horses. Donny looks terrible they should have never made Steve Buscemi horse ever. - DirectorTim BurtonStarsJohnny DeppWinona RyderDianne WiestThe solitary life of an artificial man - who was incompletely constructed and has scissors for hands - is upended when he is taken in by a suburban family.Ah, yes, the classic non-human ostracized creature Autism metaphor. They weren't even subtle about it, either, he straight up gets called the r slur by an antagonist.
I watched this with Dahlia and Azure and it was fun. The scenery is really well done and beautiful as well as the colors, which is unsurprising from a Tim Burton movie. The plot was only like okay in my opinion and I didn't like the random sexual assault scene that was put in there, but overall it was fine. I was really in it for the visuals and quality time with my good friends Dahlia and Azure. I won't tell Dahlia that, though, because it's one of their favorite movies (unfortunately they'll probably see this on the list at some point if they look at it, and if that's the case, hi future Dahlia!!! from Cicero in the past) - DirectorSam RaimiStarsTobey MaguireKirsten DunstAlfred MolinaPeter Parker is beset with troubles in his failing personal life as he battles a former brilliant scientist named Otto Octavius.Otto Octavius just like me fr except instead of wife I have Elliott and Elliott is alive and not dead.
Rewatched this with Katie, Christian, Chee, Azure, Jacob, Natalie, and Crystal for the first time since I was like 5 or some shit. We rewatched the first one in the trilogy about a month ago (during last year lol) so we are slowly trekking through them. The effects and story are cheesy in a super fun way and they do a good job at making Peter Parker a total dorkazoid. The movie tries to do a lot of things at once, but I don't really care because it's kind of funny. Also, Doc Oc isn't like Green Goblin in that he has like some sort of world ending scheme going on in the works he just kind of shows up sometimes and destroys shit and then kidnaps Peter's girl and it's very funny. In terms of cinematography, most of it is pretty standard, but there are a few shots that were very detailed and interesting that I was like woah!!! Also the editing is super funny like when there's a transition where Jameson starts warping for whatever reason? And the one shot where Peter is jogging and there are 2 reflected versions of him on either sides of him? And the shot where it goes from his eyes and up the track to show where the train just ends really fast? I'm obsessed. I like this movie.
Also, the scene where Harry is standing over Spider-man with the silver dagger about to stab him and he takes off his mask to realize, devastated, that his best friend was the one who killed his father tickled my funny bone it was almost Shakespearean in the type of dramatic it was I love it.
I do wish MJ and Peter would please choose better times to make out, though. At their best friend's dad's funeral and right before MJ gets married to another man are not good times for them to have their only romantic interactions. In fact, they're quite possibly 2 of the worst times. - DirectorPenelope SpheerisStarsMaxwell CaulfieldCharlie SheenPatti D'ArbanvilleRoy and Bo leave their small California town the weekend after graduation for a short road trip to Los Angeles. Soon, they find themselves lashing out and leaving a trail of bodies behind them. The violence escalates throughout. This movie was extremely fruity and I mean that in the rudest and most scathing way possible.
I genuinely have no fucking clue how I feel about this movie. It reminded me of Falling Down but with slightly more nuance and also with teenagers instead of a middle aged man. It was extremely concerning that the 2 people that were targeted first were the Iranian man (who was called a slur before he was severely beat up) and a gay man (who was called many slurs before and after his death), however they were still like... portrayed humanely if that makes sense? Like I feel like it did an okay job at not glorifying/justifying it because neither of these things are played for comedy there aren't gay jokes or race jokes made about either of these characters they're just violently (it's really upsetting to watch, especially the scene with the gay dude because it truly was malicious and precalculated) hatecrimed. I think that Bo and Roy are both decently interesting characters, as well. Like they suck! They're both terrible, and it does a pretty good job at like the portrayal of the kind of killers who think they were "made by society" but are really just misogynistic and strange. Like they address that Roy has a history of being neglected and whatnot, but they don't use it as any sort of justification, nor do they even try to use it to explain it actually, it's just there. Bo is the one who is supposed to be the less bad one of the pair, but I think that it was written well enough that you can tell that he isn't actually the "less bad one," especially because he is indifferent and complacent in the deaths of and beatings of these various men and only gives a shit when a woman he finds attractive is killed. Like, I'm not saying he would have killed anyone without Roy's influence, but he isn't a saint, either. There also is subtle critique of the way that capitalism (the constant dread of having to work a deadend job at the factory that keeps being brought up and the hopelessness of being trapped in that system) misogyny, toxic masculinity, and whiteness influences violence culturally. Basically, what I'm saying is I have mixed thoughts because on one hand I hated it but on the other hand I have lots of thoughts.
tldr if bo and roy had gay sex the movie would be an hour shorter because it would solve both their problems - CreatorNaoki UrasawaStarsHidenobu KiuchiLiam O'BrienEiji HanawaTenma, a brilliant neurosurgeon with a promising future, risks his career to save the life of a critically wounded young boy. The boy, now a charismatic young man, reappears 9 years later in the midst of a string of unusual serial murders. This is one of my favorite shows in general now. It isn't perfect, but I love it. Visually and characterwise (for the most part) and plotwise (for the most part) it's extremely good and refreshing, especially for anime. The political themes and the themes of humanity, ethics, and emotion are so interesting and well done this show is dear 2 me. I wish that Nina and Tenma were given more character growth, but I still like them. They did Eva's character arc the best, in my opinion. I wouldn't have changed anything about it. I have a lot of thoughts on this show that I am not going to write down in my IMDB list notes
I think Tenma should have been able to call someone a cunt if I went through what he did I would become the american psycho - DirectorDrew GoddardStarsKristen ConnollyChris HemsworthAnna HutchisonA group of kids go to a remote cabin in the woods where their fate is unknowingly controlled by technicians as part of a world-wide conspiracy where all horror movie clichés are revealed to be part of an elaborate sacrifice ritual.first movie of the year that i did not fucking like at all
I hate "horror" "comedies" that parody horror tropes without actually doing anything with them. Especially this movie when it tries to do some shit with making a statement about humanity and religion or whatever and just makes itself look stupid I don't like this movie!!! It's annoying. I know the objectification of women and boiling down of them to their sexuality was also parodying the horror genre, but once again I don't CARE if nothing is done with it. It tries too hard to be funny and did not amuse me even once it just made me roll my eyes. Stupid ass movie that gave me nothing. I watched it because when Lily described it to me it sounded interesting, but it was not good it was dumb and annoying. - DirectorDuwayne DunhamStarsMichael J. FoxSally FieldDon AmecheA fun-loving American bulldog pup, a hilarious Himalayan cat, and a wise old golden retriever embark on a long trek through the rugged wilderness of the Sierra Nevada mountains in a quest to reach home and their beloved owners.Watched this for the first time with Crystal and the part where the kid reunited with his dog made me tear up. Fun movie, very heartfelt, albeit a bit cheesy in the 90s animal movie way. I'm really surprised I had never heard of it before.
Something that concerns me though is the treatment of animals in the movie. I'm not sure how much of it was done with props and how much used real animals, but I really hope they were nice to the animals because it was apparently not really monitored, which is why there is little to no infallible information online about it. - DirectorDarren Lynn BousmanStarsTobin BellScott PattersonLouis FerreiraDespite Jigsaw's death, and in order to save the lives of two of his colleagues, Lieutenant Rigg is forced to take part in a new game, which promises to test him to the limit. This movie is really bad. I didn't remember anything after watching it the first time and I don't remember anything about it after having rewatched it again. Literally what happened in this movie I don't remember. It was fun rewatching it with Ned and Eric, though. Allison and Crystal and Lily were going to join us, but them and Piper went back to Crystal's room and watched Homeward Bound again, which is fine.
- DirectorJustin KurzelStarsGeorge MacKayEssie DavisNicholas HoultAustralian bushranger Ned Kelly and his gang flee from authorities during the 1870s.This movie is long and incredibly boring but George Mackay is in it so me, Katie, and Chee keep rewatching it every once in a while for whatever reason. This time we watched it with Ned because he hadn't seen it. Movie's mostly just people standing around talking and then occasionally something a little odd or a little fruity happens or there's a funny bit of dialogue that makes you cock an eyebrow slightly. I like some of the visuals, too, even if overall the movie isn't anything stunning.
- DirectorGregg ArakiStarsAnna FarisJohn KrasinskiAdam BrodyAfter a young actress unknowingly eats her roommate's marijuana cupcakes, her day becomes a series of misadventures.
- DirectorDavid HacklStarsScott PattersonCostas MandylorTobin BellFollowing Jigsaw's grisly demise, Mark Hoffman is commended as a hero, but Agent Strahm is suspicious, and delves into Hoffman's past. Meanwhile, another group of people are put through a series of gruesome tests.me and my friends would kill jigsaw with hammers ill tell you that much
This movie is really bad, but I love it so much, it is so funny to me. There's something inexplicably hilarious to me about every part of Mark Hoffman as a character he sucks so much. They went from having Jigsaw have some sort of shitty moral reason about him like "oh no i dont kill them they kill themselves also most of them are terrible people or dont appreciate their lives!!" to Hoffman as Jigsaw who doesn't have a moral reason for it he's just a fucking asshole. Strahm is also really funny as a character to me he just sucks so badly at his job and gets beat up relentlessly in this movie like a stress ball. Also, the glass coffin scene is so funny to me specifically I find it hilarious. This movie is so bad. I love it. I could tell Lily, Ned, and Eric didn't find it quite as funny as I do but that's ok I jingle around my funny little bells and amuse myself just fine. - DirectorKevin GreutertStarsCostas MandylorMark RolstonBetsy RussellAgent Strahm is dead, and FBI agent Erickson draws nearer to Hoffman. Meanwhile, a pair of insurance executives find themselves in another game set by Jigsaw. This was my first time watching this movie (when I watched Saw 2-5 in succession of each other the first time I got to the end of V and went "yeah no im satisfied with that ending" and didn't watch any of the others) and I remember essentially nothing that happened in it (though to be fair I had a bit of a moment during it) just like I did with Saw IV. The only things I remember happening are this guy got fucked up because he didn't want to hear about John Kramer's cure for cancer and some intern got hung for no reason by barbed wire and also Hoffman got his face ripped off? Whatever. It was fun watching with Lily, Ned, and Eric, though, we watched it immediately after watching Saw V.
- DirectorJulien TempleStarsGeena DavisJeff GoldblumJim CarreyA Southern California girl befriends three furry aliens after their spaceship lands in her swimming pool.rewatched this movie for the first time since i watched it a couple years ago and its just as funny as i remember it being. it was fun to watch it with elliott, lily, allison, eric, abby, ned, and piper :3 its like the epitome of camp
- DirectorStanley KubrickStarsKeir DulleaGary LockwoodWilliam SylvesterWhen a mysterious artifact is uncovered on the Moon, a spacecraft manned by two humans and one supercomputer is sent to Jupiter to find its origins. The way that the cinematography in this movie is and the way that the set design interacts with the characters and story is insane I love this movie. Like I know that's something everyone knows and it's expected because I'm pretentious, but still. Great movie lol. I like Hal, too, he's autism pilled they really got the most autistic sounding bloke they could to voice his evil robot ass. I also managed to avoid how boring this movie supposedly is on first watch because I was watching it with Ned, Piper, and Lily so it was fun
- DirectorRobert HiltzikStarsFelissa RoseJonathan TierstenKaren FieldsBunks and showers are a mad stabber's beat at a summer camp strictly for teens. This is not a good movie. Some of it is bad in a fun way, but the end is comedically transphobic and makes the rest of the movie retrospectively ableist as well. Angela/Peter (they don't elaborate on what gender identity they most resonate with) acts a ridiculous amount like how I did in middle school it's like looking at a reflection of my middle school self which is both good and bad because they are mistreated and patronized the entire movie by their peers in a similar way that I was. The transphobic "twist" at the end is really odd not only because of the inherent transphobia of it and the strange execution, it was just comedically abrupt. The movie just fucking ends there. I was like. Shocked. It was like what they did with Johan's character in Monster but bad and horrible and terrible.
I want to make a version of this movie where it's a horror movie but Angela is written respectfully and isn't the bad guy she's just a trans protag with autism who's caught up in this mess.
