Dialect Coaches

Among the many unsung heroes of moviedom who make the implausible a little bit more plausible are the professionals who try to teach actors to sound as if they belong to the milieu of the character they are playing. More will be added.

1. Robert Easton

Actor | Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country

Robert Easton was born on November 23, 1930 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA. He was an actor and writer, known for Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991), Working Girl (1988) and The Giant Spider Invasion (1975). He was married to June Bettine Grimstead. He died on December 16, 2011 in Toluca ...

Once gave a lesson to Johnny Carson on "The Tonight Show", asking him to read the following words: stack, stock, stalk, stark, and stork. He declared Carson's accent a good Nebraska accent, and then he asked Carson to read them again, but this time followed by the word "naked". He explained that each of these terms is "stark naked" in a different American accent: "stack naked" is a Boston accent, "stock naked" is a New York accent, "stalk naked" is an eastern Southern accent, "stark naked" is a Midwestern accent, and "stork naked" is a Texas-Oklahoma accent, especially if you pronounce it "stork necked". Dialect coach on more than fifty films.

2. Francie Brown

The Fighter

Francie Brown is known for The Fighter (2010), Inception (2010) and The Blind Side (2009).

First noticed her as the dialect coach of Anna Friel in the TV series "Pushing Daisies". Friel, who is British, maintained what, as far I am concerned, is a flawless American accent throughout the 22 episodes of the series. This is due in no small part to Friel's talent, but Brown cannot be accused of falling down on her job, either. Brown has been a dialect coach to many other actors in more than 100 movies, including "The Fighter" (2010) in which virtually the whole cast maintained authentic Boston-area accents.
