- DirectorBernard RoseStarsVirginia MadsenXander BerkeleyTony ToddThe Candyman, a murderous soul with a hook for a hand, is accidentally summoned to reality by a skeptic grad student researching the monster's myth.[Horror] - Candyman is a fantastic and beautifully crafted film about a terrifying entity. Tony Todd's Candyman is a beautiful villain who could make the straightest of men erect. The score, by the uber-talented Philip Glass makes the film better than it ever should have been.
- DirectorAlfred HitchcockStarsJames StewartGrace KellyWendell CoreyA wheelchair-bound photographer spies on his neighbors from his Greenwich Village courtyard apartment window and, despite the skepticism of his fashion-model girlfriend, becomes convinced one of them has committed murder.[Horror/Comedy/Mystery] - Oh, Alfred Hitchcock. Your sense of humor gets me every time. Rear Window's impeccable murder mystery is amazingly shot through the eyes of a man with broken legs, unable to leave his rear window.
- DirectorJoel AndersonStarsRosie TraynorDavid PledgerMartin SharpeStrange things start happening after a girl is found drowned in a lake.[Horror] - Lake Mungo is a depressing look at a family who loses their daughter. There isn't much for me to say without spoiling it, so I won't say much. Just please watch it.
- DirectorBarry SonnenfeldStarsAnjelica HustonRaul JuliaChristopher LloydThe Addams Family try to rescue their beloved Uncle Fester from his gold-digging new love, a black widow named Debbie.[Comedy] - Not every movie I adore has to be a deep movie. Addams Family Values is one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. The pitch-black comedy is absolutely fun. The Thanksgiving play scene is a tradition at our house at thanksgiving.
- DirectorJacques AudiardStarsJohn C. ReillyJoaquin PhoenixJake GyllenhaalEli and Charlie Sisters, an infamous duo of gunslinging assassins, chase a gold prospector and his unexpected ally in 1850s Oregon.[Western] - The Sisters Brothers is a western with very few shootouts. The big fight you wait all movie to happen never does. Instead, we see a beautiful bond between two brothers who want nothing more than to hit it big and protect each other.
- DirectorEdgar WrightStarsMichael CeraMary Elizabeth WinsteadKieran CulkinIn a magically realistic version of Toronto, a young man must defeat his new girlfriend's seven evil exes one by one in order to win her heart.[Comedy/Action/Romance] - Scott Pilgrim's live action adaptation is the best comic book adaptation of all time. Fight me. The chemistry between Michael Cera and Marie Elizabeth Winstead is impeccable. The two play Scott and Ramona so amazingly. The fight scenes are some of the best choreographed fights I've seen.
- DirectorRichard LinklaterStarsEthan HawkeJulie DelpyAndrea EckertA young man and woman meet on a train in Europe, and wind up spending one evening together in Vienna. Unfortunately, both know that this will probably be their only night together.[Romance] - Before Sunrise is an awesome romance movie. The chemistry the two leads have is so great, you'd swear they were dating in real life. It's just a tender film that makes me feel so good to watch.
- DirectorPark Chan-wookStarsChoi Min-sikYoo Ji-taeKang Hye-jeongAfter being kidnapped and imprisoned for fifteen years, Oh Dae-Su is released, only to find that he must track down his captor in five days.[Action/Horror] - And in a completely opposite movie, Oldboy is one of the most brutal movies I have ever seen. It's about Oh Dae-su, a drunken oaf who's kidnapped and held hostage for 15 years. He loses all his weight, and sets out to kill those who held him hostage.
- DirectorBen CoccioStarsCal RobertsonAndre KeuckSerataren AdragnaTwo troubled adolescents chronicle the events that ultimately lead up to a terrifying assault on their school.[Drama] - Zero Day is very much about Columbine. It chilled me to my core. It's about two teenagers who are talking with each other about a vile plan to end the lives of their classmates. It's easily one of the most disturbing movies I have ever seen.
- DirectorKim Jee-woonStarsLee Byung-hunChoi Min-sikJeon Gook-hwanA secret agent exacts revenge on a serial killer through a series of captures and releases.[Horror] - I Saw the Devil showcases even further that South Korea is better than us. The film is about a government agent's wife being murdered. The agent finds the murderer and beats the shit out of him. When he's done, he lets the murderer free to recuperate, only to beat him again. The movie's dark and sleazy atmosphere helps the movie become one of the best horror movies ever.
- DirectorRyûhei KitamuraKoji HashimotoShûsuke KanekoStarsMasahiro MatsuokaRei KikukawaDon FryeGodzilla's fiftieth Anniversary project, in which Godzilla travels around the world to fight his old foes and his allies plus a new, mysterious monster named Monster X.[Monster] - As a celebration of Godzilla's 50th birthday, Toho released Final Wars, an awesome movie where Godzilla must fight against his former friends and worst enemies. Everyone is here! It's like Smash Ultimate before Smash Ultimate. The best fights are Godzilla VS. Anguirus, King Caesar, and Mothra, Godzilla VS. Zilla, and Godzilla VS. Gigan. I hope my 50th birthday is this good.
- DirectorKazuki ÔmoriKoji HashimotoKenjirô OhmoriStarsKunihiko MitamuraYoshiko TanakaMasanobu TakashimaDesolate by the loss of his daughter, a geneticist creates a monstrous new mutation.[Monster] - The best Godzilla movie that isn't Final Wars is Godzilla vs. Biollante, a movie where Godzilla must fight a gigantic plant creature known as Biollante. Biollante is the best female antagonist in film, fight me.
- DirectorLars von TrierStarsWillem DafoeCharlotte GainsbourgStorm Acheche SahlstrømA grieving couple retreat to their cabin in the woods, hoping to repair their broken hearts and troubled marriage, but nature takes its course and things go from bad to worse.[Horror/Art] - Antichrist is a deeply disturbed horror that is provocative in everything it does. The movie is about a grieving couple who loses their child while they passionately made love. They try to spend the month in a cabin to escape reality, but the wife starts to lose her mind.
- DirectorLucio FulciStarsCatriona MacCollDavid WarbeckCinzia MonrealeA young woman inherits an old hotel in Louisiana where, following a series of supernatural "accidents", she learns that the building was built over one of the entrances to Hell.[Horror] - The Beyond rocks hard. It's about a woman who buys a hotel, that just so happens to sit above one of the 7 gates of hell. What follows is some of the goriest scenes ever put to film.
- DirectorMichael MannStarsWilliam PetersenKim GreistJoan AllenFormer FBI profiler Will Graham returns to service to pursue a deranged serial killer dubbed "the Tooth Fairy" by the media.[Horror/Mystery] - The first time Dr. Hannibal Lecter appeared on screen was also one of the most amazing. It's an atypical slasher film, where officer Will Graham searches for the Red Dragon killer Francis Dolarhyde in a fantastic game of cat and mouse.
- DirectorGaspar NoéStarsAomi MuyockKarl GlusmanKlara KristinMurphy is an American living in Paris who enters a highly sexually and emotionally charged relationship with Electra. Unaware of the effect it will have on their relationship, they invite their pretty neighbor into their bed.[Erotic/Romance] - Love is a film I watched for the cover, and stayed for the emotionally raw story. A tale about a couple that tries to spice up their love by having a threesome that falls into obsession is one of the best tales ever put to film. It made me sad, and that was something I genuinely didn't expect.
- DirectorFranck KhalfounStarsElijah WoodNora ArnezederAmerica OlivoAs he helps a young artist with her upcoming exhibition, the owner of a mannequin shop's deadly, suppressed desires come to the surface.[Horror] - Horror gets the remake treatment a lot, something you'll see a lot of. The brutality of Maniac's remake is unmatched: the scalping scene is one of the most brutal things in horror. The performance Elijah Wood gives as the troubled Frank Zito is a definite career highlight in a career full of them.
- DirectorDario ArgentoStarsJessica HarperStefania CasiniFlavio BucciAn American newcomer to a prestigious German ballet academy comes to realize that the school is a front for something sinister amid a series of grisly murders.[Horror] - The cinematography in Suspiria ascends it beyond anything I expected it to be. Suspiria is fantastic, and I heard the remake is equally good. I haven't seen it yet, but if it is, expect it on this list.
- DirectorWes CravenStarsHeather LangenkampJohnny DeppRobert EnglundTeenager Nancy Thompson must uncover the dark truth concealed by her parents after she and her friends become targets of the spirit of a serial killer with a bladed glove in their dreams, in which if they die, it kills them in real life.[Horror] - A classic horror! Nightmare on Elm Street saved horror, and clawed its way into my heart. Robert Englund was fantastic as Freddy, and Heather Langenkamp was amazing as Nancy. Everyone was great!
- DirectorTony RandelStarsDoug BradleyAshley LaurenceClare HigginsKirsty is brought to an institution after the horrible events of Hellraiser (1987), where the occult-obsessive head doctor resurrects Julia and unleashes the Cenobites and their demonic underworld.[Horror] - Hellbound is a sequel to Hellraiser. The sequel takes a lot of the best parts of the original and improves upon it in its own twisted fashion. Frank Cotton's Reincarnation is one of the best bits of gore in film history!
- DirectorRoxanne BenjaminMatt Bettinelli-OlpinDavid BrucknerStarsChad VillellaMatt Bettinelli-OlpinKristina PesicFive interlocking tales of terror follow the fates of a group of weary travellers who confront their worst nightmares - and darkest secrets - over one long night on a desolate stretch of desert highway.[Horror/Anthology] - Southbound is an anthology that weaves 5 very unique and very well made tales. The 3rd tale, "The Accident", is easily the best of the bunch.
- DirectorRuggero DeodatoStarsRobert KermanFrancesca CiardiPerry PirkanenDuring a rescue mission into the Amazon rainforest, a professor stumbles across lost film shot by a missing documentary crew.[Exploitation] - Cannibal Holocaust was the first found footage film. The abhorrent violence and innovative film style helped make the movie better than it ever deserved to be.
- DirectorJoel CoenEthan CoenStarsGeorge ClooneyJohn TurturroTim Blake NelsonIn the deep south during the 1930s, three escaped convicts search for hidden treasure while a relentless lawman pursues them.[Comedy/Epic] - A fantastic retelling of the Odyssey, O Brother, Where Art Thou? introduces us to Ulysses Everrett McGill, one of the best roles of George Clooney's career. The soundtrack is fantastic, as is the cinematography.
- DirectorSam RaimiStarsBruce CampbellEllen SandweissRichard DeManincorFive friends travel to a cabin in the woods, where they unknowingly release flesh-possessing demons.[Horror] - Evil Dead is very, very different from the unstoppable locomotive of Evil Dead 2. Evil Dead is certainly more horrifying, but what's absolutely surprising is just how unforgivingly gory it is. It's a truly enjoyable watch.
- DirectorQuentin TarantinoStarsLeonardo DiCaprioBrad PittMargot RobbieA faded television actor and his stunt double strive to achieve fame and success in the final years of Hollywood's Golden Age in 1969 Los Angeles.[Comedy/Revisionist History] - Sharon Tate's death is one of the most disturbing murders of that era. So Once Upon a Time in Hollywood's choice of showcasing her life and then killing the murderers instead of her is one of the most powerful decisions in 2019's films. Beyond that, Leonardo Dicaprio and Brad Pitt are absolutely stellar in this movie. The movie is probably my favorite movie of the year.
- DirectorDavid CronenbergStarsJeff GoldblumGeena DavisJohn GetzA brilliant but eccentric scientist begins to transform into a giant man/fly hybrid after one of his experiments goes horribly wrong.[Horror/Science Fiction] - The Fly is one of the best horror remakes of all time. It keeps the eeriness of the original, but adds something the movie desperately needed: David Cronenberg. Cronenberg's typical gore and disgusting mutations told a fantastic story that was very obviously about AIDS. It's a bit on the nose, but it's still a fantastic allegory.
- DirectorJohn HughesStarsSteve MartinJohn CandyLaila RobinsA Chicago advertising man must struggle to travel home from New York for Thanksgiving, with a lovable oaf of a shower-curtain-ring salesman as his only companion.[Comedy] - Planes, Trains & Automobiles makes me cry of laughter and then just cry. The movie's infectious comedy is something that's painful to watch. Not because it's bad, but because it's so funny that my sides genuinely hurt for 4 days after. And the fantastic twist and the sweet act of kindness at the end made me genuinely cry. A truly beautiful and hilarious movie.
- DirectorJ.A. BayonaStarsLewis MacDougallSigourney WeaverFelicity JonesConor, a twelve-year-old boy, encounters an ancient tree monster who proceeds to help him cope with his mother's terminal illness and being bullied in school.[Coming of Age] - A Monster Calls is a movie that cut me deeply. My mom recently passed away with breast cancer, and so just watching this makes me cry. I can empathize with the main character: I took comfort in movies, because I knew she was going. It hurts. A Monster Calls is painfully realistic.
- DirectorPete DocterBob PetersonStarsEdward AsnerJordan NagaiJohn Ratzenberger78-year-old Carl Fredricksen travels to Paradise Falls in his house equipped with balloons, inadvertently taking a young stowaway.[Animation/Adventure/Coming of Age] - Both the 9 year old and the 88 year old come of age in this movie that I consider to be Pixar's best movie. The tale of loss that it tells is heartbreaking, where the house is the last memory of Carl's wife. The opening scene is easily one of the most tragic openings in movie history.
- DirectorAbdellatif KechicheStarsLéa SeydouxAdèle ExarchopoulosSalim KechioucheAdèle's life is changed when she meets Emma, a young woman with blue hair, who will allow her to discover desire and to assert herself as a woman and as an adult. In front of others, Adèle grows, seeks herself, loses herself, and ultimately finds herself through love and loss.[Erotic/Romance/LGBT] - Blue Is the Warmest Color is a movie that will make your heart feel warm. It's an emotional watch, with some genuinely heartbreaking scenes. There is a LOT of sex in it, but it never feels pornographic. The sex is more or less there to show the relation between Adele and Emma, and show just how deep their relationship is.
- DirectorChristopher NolanStarsMatthew McConaugheyAnne HathawayJessica ChastainWhen Earth becomes uninhabitable in the future, a farmer and ex-NASA pilot, Joseph Cooper, is tasked to pilot a spacecraft, along with a team of researchers, to find a new planet for humans.[Science Fiction] - Interstellar's trippy and overwhelming visuals are great, but Hans Zimmer's dominating soundtrack is one of the amazing highlights. The entirety of Interstellar is so, so beautiful.
- DirectorSatoshi KonStarsJunko IwaoRica MatsumotoShinpachi TsujiA pop singer gives up her career to become an actress, but she slowly goes insane when she starts being stalked by an obsessed fan and what seems to be a ghost of her past.[Anime/Horror] - Perfect Blue is a hauntingly beautiful and gorgeously disturbed movie. Mima's stalker and descent into madness is a truly depressing sight to behold.
- DirectorDavid FincherStarsMorgan FreemanBrad PittKevin SpaceyTwo detectives, a rookie and a veteran, hunt a serial killer who uses the seven deadly sins as his motives.[Horror/Crime] - Se7en is best known for its horrifying plot twist ("What's in the box?!") but it should be known for so much more than that. Se7en's horrifying serial killer, John Doe, kills people in such forsaken fashion. The whole mystery is twisted.
- DirectorStuart GordonStarsJeffrey CombsBruce AbbottBarbara CramptonAfter an odd new medical student arrives on campus, a dedicated local and his girlfriend become involved in bizarre experiments centering around the re-animation of dead tissue.[Horror/Comedy] - This is my favorite movie. I know it's strange to have on the list at such a random place, but I just wanted to talk about it here. Re-Animator's excels in its campy dialogue, disgusting gore, dance-inducing soundtracks, and career-defining performances.
- DirectorRichard KellyStarsJake GyllenhaalJena MaloneMary McDonnellAfter narrowly escaping a bizarre accident, a troubled teenager is plagued by visions of a man in a large rabbit suit who manipulates him to commit a series of crimes.[Art] - Donnie Darko's awesome story and spacey cinematography makes it a very impossible film to watch just once.
- DirectorJohn CarpenterStarsKurt RussellWilford BrimleyKeith DavidA research team in Antarctica is hunted by a shape-shifting alien that assumes the appearance of its victims.[Horror] - Another excellent horror remake, The Thing's grotesque body horror and paranoid whodunnit make it easily John Carpenter's best work.
- DirectorTommy Lee WallaceStarsTom AtkinsStacey NelkinDan O'HerlihyKids all over America want Silver Shamrock masks for Halloween. Doctor Daniel Challis seeks to uncover a plot by Silver Shamrock owner Conal Cochran.[Horror] - The low rating that Halloween 3 has makes me sad. Halloween 3 is a fantastical and brutal Halloween that quintuples the body count of the original. The movie's original villain and bonkers plot is the Halloween that I remember so damn fondly.
- DirectorPhilip KaufmanStarsDonald SutherlandBrooke AdamsJeff GoldblumWhen strange seeds drift to earth from space, mysterious pods begin to grow and invade San Francisco, replicating the city's residents one body at a time.[Horror] - Yet another excellent horror remake (that makes four) that surpasses the original. Invasion of the Body Snatchers is a quiet and nightmarish horror that makes my skin crawl just watching it. Fair warning, even though it's PG, there is some nudity at the end.
- DirectorJordan PeeleStarsDaniel KaluuyaAllison WilliamsBradley WhitfordA young African-American visits his white girlfriend's parents for the weekend, where his simmering uneasiness about their reception of him eventually reaches a boiling point.[Horror] - Get Out's tackling of race in a time where the president is a bigot was very obviously planned. The movie's horror comes from not only the racism, but the fear of losing yourself.
- DirectorJohn CarpenterStarsSam NeillJürgen ProchnowJulie CarmenAn insurance investigator begins discovering that the impact a horror writer's books have on his fans is more than inspirational.[Horror] - John Carpenter's second best work is In the Mouth of Madness: a ghastly movie where the world is obsessed with the famed horror author Sutter Cane. Sam Niell's Johnathan Trent is a fantastic character.
- DirectorMary HarronStarsChristian BaleJustin TherouxJosh LucasA wealthy New York City investment banking executive, Patrick Bateman, hides his alternate psychopathic ego from his co-workers and friends as he delves deeper into his violent, hedonistic fantasies.[Horror/Comedy] - Welcome to the twisted world of Patrick Bateman. The immaculate and vile world. Patrick is a Wall Street wolf: wakes up, follows his routine, goes to work, films some pornography, and dissects people. The darkly comedic world of American Psycho is so damn horrifying.
- DirectorGeorge A. RomeroStarsDavid EmgeKen ForeeScott H. ReinigerDuring an escalating zombie epidemic, two Philadelphia SWAT team members, a traffic reporter and his TV executive girlfriend seek refuge in a secluded shopping mall.[Horror/Comedy] - You may have noticed I labeled this as a "comedy". Well it is. It's hilarious. The people just living in the mall is one of the funniest scenes in horror. To counteract this, the movie is genuinely horrifying in the ways it builds its claustrophobic atmosphere.
- DirectorPatrick BriceStarsKatie AseltonPatrick BriceMark DuplassA young videographer answers an online ad for a one-day job in a remote town to record the last messages of a dying man. When he notices the man's odd behavior, he starts to question his intentions.[Horror] - It's hard for me to describe why I love Creep so goddamn much, so lemme try. Creep is a found footage film about a videographer who films a video diary for a terminally ill man's unborn son. It is suddenly realized that the terminally ill man isn't all he appears to be.
- DirectorJulia DucournauStarsGarance MarillierElla RumpfRabah Nait OufellaA young woman, studying to be a vet, develops a craving for human flesh.[French Extremity/Horror] - Raw's crushing violence makes it a sight to behold. The brutality of Juliette's cannibalistic desires become something grotesque and real.
- DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsTom CruiseColin FarrellSamantha MortonJohn works with the PreCrime police which stop crimes before they take place, with the help of three 'PreCogs' who can foresee crimes. Events ensue when John finds himself framed for a future murder.[Action] - Minority Report is one of those movies that you watch because the trailer looks dumb, but it ends up being really really good. This man on the run story is one for the ages, with so many twists that it eclipses M. Night Shamalyn's entire filmography.
- DirectorE.L. KatzStarsPat HealyEthan EmbrySara PaxtonA scheming couple put a struggling family man and his old friend through a series of increasingly twisted dares over the course of an evening at a local bar.[Comedy/Horror] - This excessive comedy of a game of dares that goes way too far is a funny and brutal ride.
- DirectorTom HanksStarsTom HanksLiv TylerCharlize TheronA local Pennsylvania band scores a one-hit wonder in 1964 and rides the star-making machinery as long as they can, with lots of help from their manager.[Comedy/"Musical"] - That Thing You Do is easily one of my favorites. The movie is about a band called the Wonders who's only song gets their band into the big times, so they ride the hype train until the band starts to pull apart. It's a very funny and heart-filled movie with one song that happens to be catchy as hell.
- DirectorPascal LaugierStarsMorjana AlaouiMylène JampanoïCatherine BéginA young woman's quest for revenge against the people who kidnapped and tormented her as a child leads her and a friend, who is also a victim of child abuse, on a terrifying journey into a living hell of depravity.[French Extremity/Horror] - Martyrs is a brutal view into the lives of 2 french teens who were raised in captivity and are tortured. It's fucking brutal.
- DirectorGeorge A. RomeroStarsJohn AmplasLincoln MaazelChristine ForrestA young man, who believes himself to be a vampire, goes to live with his elderly and hostile cousin in a Pennsylvania small town where he tries to redeem his blood-craving urges.[Horror] - In a very different twist, Martin is about Martin, a man who believes he is a vampire, yet isn't. What follows is some very brutal scenes of Martin trying to sink his teeth into people.
- DirectorPeter JacksonStarsElijah WoodViggo MortensenIan McKellenGandalf and Aragorn lead the World of Men against Sauron's army to draw his gaze from Frodo and Sam as they approach Mount Doom with the One Ring.[Fantasy/Adventure] - Return of the King is the perfect culmination of everything that came before it. Its following of the ending tales of the heroes is every bit as epic as you can expect.
- DirectorRobert RedfordStarsRalph FiennesJohn TurturroRob MorrowA young lawyer, Richard Goodwin, investigates a potentially fixed game show. Charles Van Doren, a big time show winner, is under Goodwin's investigation.[Drama] - Quiz Show is a very informative and intriguing look into the controversy surrounding the infamous game show Twenty-One.
- DirectorTakashi MiikeStarsKen'ichi EndôShungiku UchidaKazushi WatanabeA troubled and perverted family find their lives intruded by a mysterious stranger who seems to help find a balance in their disturbing natures.[Comedy/Horror] - Visitor Q is a very funny and very disturbing look into the life of a family that's in tatters that gets turned around when a visitor shows up. It's very funny, but also very warped.
- DirectorRobert HiltzikStarsFelissa RoseJonathan TierstenKaren FieldsBunks and showers are a mad stabber's beat at a summer camp strictly for teens.[Comedy/Horror] - Sleepaway Camp is one of those unintentionally funny movies that manages to be hilarious for all the right reasons. And let's not forget the horrifying twist ending.
- DirectorAndrey IskanovStarsAlexandra BatrumovaSvyatoslav IliyasovAndrey IskanovA haunted hitman whose violent career has taken a toll on his mental health turns to trepanning as a means of relieving his growing anxiety.[Crime/Psychedelic] - A little known Russian crime thriller, Gvozdi (Or Nails, as it's better known) is a psychotic movie about a man doing accupuncture and breaking his mind.
- DirectorWes AndersonStarsRalph FiennesF. Murray AbrahamMathieu AmalricA writer encounters the owner of an aging high-class hotel, who tells him of his early years serving as a lobby boy in the hotel's glorious years under an exceptional concierge.[Comedy/Art] - The Grand Budapest Hotel is a hotel I wanna stay at forever. A fantastic comedy from the God of Quirkiness, Wes Anderson, that is as funny as it is emotional.
- DirectorStanley KubrickStarsJames MasonShelley WintersSue LyonA middle-aged college professor becomes infatuated with a 14-year-old girl.[Crime] - Lolita is such a creepy and gross movie that's well worth a watch if you're a fan of crime and grime.
- DirectorJohn McPhailStarsElla HuntMalcolm CummingSarah SwireA zombie apocalypse threatens the sleepy town of Little Haven - at Christmas - forcing Anna and her friends to fight, slash and sing their way to survival, facing the undead in a desperate race to reach their loved ones.
