- CreatorEiichiro OdaStarsMayumi TanakaAkemi OkamuraLaurent VerninMonkey D. Luffy sets off on an adventure with his pirate crew in hopes of finding the greatest treasure ever, known as the "One Piece."Although the animation quality and pacing can suffer periodically, the pure heart of this anime shines like a monolith. I have never laughed so hard, been brought to tears, and literally cheered as much as I have with anything else. Eiichiro Oda has created one of the most vibrant and mysterious cartoon worlds I have ever had the pleasure of experiencing. It almost seems like he's pulling things out of his ass but often times plot points you might think are unimportant are actually extremely important. There is a deep lore just waiting to be uncovered in this anime and at the same time it's simply lots of fun. Stars a diverse and charming set of characters all voiced by legends in the industry. It might not be for everyone considering length but once it sets its anchors into you it will never let go. If you want to experience the grandest action packed, emotional, hilarious adventure ever created in anime history, you have to watch this legendary series. If you don't have the time I recommend reading the manga and watching the highlights of your favorite parts of the manga on youtube. You can blaze through the manga in bathroom breaks and it'll only take like 2 months of dedicated toilet reading.
- CreatorHideaki AnnoStarsMegumi OgataMegumi HayashibaraKotono MitsuishiA teenage boy finds himself recruited as a member of an elite team of pilots by his father.Do you hate yourself, wish you were dead, feel unending, crippling loneliness and wanted to watch an anime with that vibe? Look no further! Literally Sigmund Freud the anime, featuring the most pathetic protagonist in anime history to hate and self-insert at the same time! Great 90s animation, psycho-sexual imagery, existentialism, nihilism, the angst of adolescence, religious imagery, Euclidian and non-Euclidian beings, slight Jewish mysticism, mental illness, this anime has everything! The anime that actively HATES anime, a deconstruction of anime itself. If you plan to watch it, make sure to also watch The End of Evangelion movie to make sense of the ending of the anime because the studio ran out of money by the end of the show. A must watch for any anime fan and an anime I feel a huge personal connection with. Started so many tropes and copycats, some that I even liked. It's only 26 episodes + the movie so you can finish it rather quickly.
- CreatorNaoki UrasawaStarsHidenobu KiuchiLiam O'BrienMamiko NotoTenma, a brilliant neurosurgeon with a promising future, risks his career to save the life of a critically wounded young boy. The boy, now a charismatic young man, reappears 9 years later in the midst of a string of unusual serial murders. What makes a man evil? What is true evil? What is justice? What would you do? This anime is a case study of morality while at the same time an AMAZING murder mystery. The animation may not be spectacular and the characters might look somewhat dull or normal but the writing is the best I have ever seen in an anime in my life. This is a series that stays in your head and forces you to think. The characters are so fully formed and real. The mystery is so dark and unnerving that perhaps you don't want to know but you keep going because you MUST. Some moments in this show have creeped me out to my core to the point where the "name" makes my skin crawl. I recommend the english dub since the anime takes place in Europe and the voice actors are spectacular. This is one of those anime you see turn into an award winning live action series 20 years later, it's just begging for it. Watch the opening of the anime as a litmus test and if it captures you I implore you to watch the series. Clocks in at 64(?) episodes so it's not super long like some others but it is a slow burn, keep in mind that even the episodes that seem like they're veering off the main plot NEVER actually do, pay attention and soak up every last detail. A murder mystery for the AGES. One Piece and NGE maybe my personal favorites but this anime is objectively one of the best if not the best anime ever made.
- CreatorShin'ichirô WatanabeStarsKazuya NakaiGinpei SatoAyako KawasumiFuu, a waitress who works in a teahouse, rescues two master swordsmen, Mugen and Jin, from their execution to help her find the "samurai who smells of sunflowers."A great tale of reluctant friendship blossoming into true comradery. This series has slick animation, great action scenes, silly comedy and heart-wrenching stories. It's about growing as a person and learning things. Becoming stronger and always moving forward no matter what. Also contains an AMAZING trip-hop soundtrack. I teared up a couple of times with this one. Also not very long at about 25 episodes.
- CreatorShin'ichirô WatanabeHajime YatateStarsKôichi YamaderaUnshô IshizukaMegumi HayashibaraThe futuristic misadventures and tragedies of an easygoing bounty hunter and his partners.By the same director of Samurai Champloo. Whereas Samurai Champloo is about overcoming your past and growing, Cowboy Bebop is more about your past catching up with you. While it is technically a more somber tale from the get go, it's still a lot of fun. Really good animation and lovable characters. Great action scenes too of course. A space western about scraping by and trying to live the best you can before you have to right all the wrongs in your life. One day those sins are gonna come looking for you space cowboy. Another short one at 25 episodes.
- StarsTakahiro SakuraiSetsuo ItoChris NiosiA psychic middle school boy tries to live a normal life and keep his growing powers under control, even though he constantly gets into trouble. An extremely emotionally mature anime that shatters tropes left and right. Mainly focused on self improvement and handling your emotions instead of repressing them. Also completely hilarious and action packed. There are fight scenes with almost Akira like animation and destruction. Made by the creator of One Punch Man and contains similar themes but is more laser focused on growing as a person whereas One Punch Man can feel a bit aimless. I consider this series the magnum opus of the creator, I love One Punch man but a lot more heart and care is put into this series. There's a reason why they funneled more resources towards this series for its second season as opposed to One Punch Man.
- CreatorGorô TaniguchiIchirô ÔkouchiStarsJun FukuyamaTakahiro SakuraiJohnny Yong BoschAfter being given a mysterious power to control others, an outcast prince becomes the masked leader of the rebellion against an all-powerful empire.A borderline absurd war/political melodrama with a break neck pace and twists and turns you never see coming. It's sort of the Death Note of mecha anime in the sense that the protagonist is awarded a power that he uses to strategize crazy plans the way Light does in Death Note. The mecha in this show take a back seat to the insane plans and strategies the main character plays out. lots of cliffhanger episodes to keep you hooked and a splash of romance to spice things up. Was on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. 50 episodes long, enough to not overstay its welcome.
- CreatorYoshiyuki TominoStarsNobuo TobitaShûichi IkedaHirotaka SuzuokiEight years after the One Year War, the Earth Federation creates an elite force called the Titans to hunt Zeon remnants. When Titans proves to be no better than Zeon, the Anti Earth Union Group (AEUG) is formed to restore peace in space. One of the best anime series sequels, takes the original and expands on the universe adding mechs and more political intrigue and romance. Don't let the cool robots fool you, what matters in Gundam stories are the characters and their struggle in defending what they believe in. New protagonist is very angsty but likable. New mobile suits are really cool, some of the best designs in the series. A personal favorite that might not appeal to everyone, if you want to get into Gundam I recommend it along with the original series first of course. Animation is an improvement across the board from the original.
- StarsDaiki YamashitaJustin BrinerNobuhiko OkamotoA superhero-admiring boy enrolls in a prestigious hero academy and learns what it really means to be a hero, after the strongest superhero grants him his own powers.I like to call this show "HYPE the anime", a very exciting and fresh experience that will please any anime fan. Very western and super hero inspired anime that bared its chops at the height of the super hero craze effectively catapulting it to its current popularity. Stars a cast of colorful/fantastically designed characters with very entertaining and zany powers beating the crap out of each other. Fantastic animation and action and some insanely hype moments. There was one moment that genuinely got me and my brother all caps screaming with excitement to the point of sore-throatedness. While not necessarily very emotionally mature, it is an extremely fun and compelling series.
- CreatorKazuki NakashimaStarsTetsuya KakiharaShizuka ItouYuri LowenthalTwo friends, Simon and Kamina, become the symbols of rebellion against the powerful Spiral King, who forced mankind into subterranean villages.I would probably also call this "HYPE the anime" as it has similar themes but is a bit more focused on masculinity and what it means to be a man. The drill phallic symbol obviously representing the male ego crashing through obstacles with sheer confidence despite not knowing what is actually going on. The show starts out a bit shallow and matures as it goes along. Has a lot of metaphorical aspects that are really inspiring. Great animation throughout and very charming characters. Filled with jaw dropping hyperbolic moments.
- StarsMakoto FurukawaKaito IshikawaMax MittelmanThe story of Saitama, a hero that does it just for fun & can defeat his enemies with a single punch.A series in which the main character can defeat everything in one punch, that's the entire show and it's one of the funniest anime out there. You'd think the punchline would get old but they always manage to make it funnier every episode. Slick animation and great action, though they change animation studios in the second season and the quality suffers for it, recommend reading the manga after season 1 as the artwork of Yusuke Murata is legendary. To assuage any confusion the original manga creator is the author called ONE and he's terrible at drawing but the web comic was so funny and well written that they had Yusuke Murata translate the artwork from ONE's original drawings and they publish both now side by side. Then they made the anime based on Murata's artwork (and a sprinkle of ONE's for some funny reactions). You can read ONE's webcomic if you want the latest development in the story or you can wait for Murata to work from ONE's scribbles and redraw it spinning thread into gold.
- StarsVic MignognaAaron DismukeRomi ParkWhen a failed alchemical ritual leaves brothers Edward and Alphonse Elric with severely damaged bodies, they begin searching for the one thing that can save them: the fabled philosopher's stone.A heart wrenching, action packed tale of two brothers trying to become whole again. A legendary series though this version veers from the manga as it was created before the manga was finished. One of the reasons I love this anime is the world building and the way alchemy works is very tight. It always obeys its own rules. I actually enjoy both versions of the anime for different reasons that I won't spoil.
- CreatorHiromu ArakawaStarsKent WilliamsIemasa KayumiMatthew LeonhartTwo brothers search for a Philosopher's Stone after an attempt to revive their deceased mother goes awry and leaves them in damaged physical forms. The same heart wrenching, action packed tale except it's a direct adaptation of the manga in its entirety. Follows the manga 1:1 and is the authors original vision. A lot of people prefer this version of events but I like both and I think that both series demand watching. Both are animated by the same studio and the work is top notch. English voice cast is the same for both series and highly recommended over the Japanese dub. The series start to diverge around the middle. If you want to watch both series I'd recommend the earlier one first for reasons I can't explain without spoiling but ultimately it's up to you.
- CreatorDai SatôKazuhiko ShimamotoStarsYûko SanpeiKeiji FujiwaraKaori Nazuka14-year-old Renton joins the rebel GekkoState ship, co-pilots the TypeZero with the mysterious Eureka, and unknowingly becomes part of a grand scheme.Sort of a ripoff of evangelion but still great. A series about teen angst and young love amidst domestic terrorism, environmentalism, religious persecution, civil war, and weird alien things. Great animation and action throughout featuring wind surfing robots. Lore is convoluted but basically understandable, characters shine through. Amazing openings and endings are a nice treat as well.
- StarsAya HiranoNobunaga ShimazakiRinka H.B.B.17-year-old Shinichi Izumi is partially infected by a Parasyte, monsters that butcher and consume humans. He must learn to co-exist with the creature if he is to survive both the life of a Parasyte and a human as part monster, part person.Great alien invasion/impostor anime about symbiotic aliens taking over human bodies. A very strange anime with some violent horror mixed in. Amidst all that is a heartwarming story of friendship. Sort of like ET except there's people getting eaten and horribly mutilated.
- StarsTomokazu SugitaDaisuke SakaguchiRie KugimiyaIn an era where aliens have invaded and taken over feudal Tokyo, an unemployed samurai finds work however he can.A legendary comedy/action anime with a big heart. Has some of the best gags I've ever seen and some tear jerker episodes that come out of nowhere. Constant fourth wall break insanity. Some arcs get pretty serious and can be engaging though I prefer it when the show is at its most stupid. TONS of pop culture references as well that will probably fly over your head unless you're Japanese, subtitles do well to explain jokes like this which helps. If you have a passing interest in anime though you'll probably get most of them.
- CreatorYoshio SawaiStarsTakehito KoyasuAi NonakaMasaya OnosakaThe impossible adventures of Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo, a warrior who fights using his nose hairs to defeat an evil empire that wants to turn the human race bald.Tim and Eric if it were an anime, a non stop surrealist parody that is 0-100 from the first damn episode. Nonsensical insanity from start to finish. Both the dub and the sub are great, the dub is funny because the Japanese puns or gags that can't be translated are instead replaced by new jokes entirely that are actually really funny and self aware. Highly recommend watching both versions.
- StarsDavid VincentMatthew MercerDaisuke OnoThe story of the Joestar family, who are possessed with intense psychic strength, and the adventures each member encounters throughout their lives.A crazy weird ass anime involving immortal vampires, hamon energy, manifestations of your psyche that can fight for you in insane ways. It's a borderline indescribable show but things to keep in mind would be that it is action focused with a light comedic tone. Also everyone is RIPPED beyond belief.
- StarsYûsuke KobayashiSean ChiplockKayli MillsAfter being suddenly transported to another world, Subaru Natsuki and his new female partner are brutally murdered. However, Subaru awakens to a familiar scene, meeting the same girl again. The day begins to mysteriously repeat itself. One of the best Isekai anime out there, focuses on strong characters and world building and tugs on the heart strings. Is also slightly frustrating at times. Some action but it's mainly a drama.
- StarsJun FukushimaSora AmamiyaRie TakahashiIt was a happy day for Kazuma - right up to the moment he died. A goddess intervenes and offers him a second chance in a magical land.An amazing parody of Isekai anime that is extremely funny. Characters are very vibrant and likable, world is tropey and generic but what really matters is the comedy. There is a bit of heart in it that you want to see the protagonists succeed but even when it gets serious the show still manages to hit you with the jokes. Also pretty fan servicey so if that bothers you it's probably not going to be your thing, I feel it's not overwhelmingly so.
- StarsMamoru MiyanoAsami ImaiKana HanazawaAfter discovering time travel, a university student and his colleagues must use their knowledge of it to stop an evil organization and their diabolical plans.GET READY TO WHIP OUT THE TISSUES BOYS. A tear jerker romantic time travel anime based on the award winning visual novel. Fantastic characters and well written drama, I recommend it to anyone who wants a heart boner. Time Travel shenanigans are well done also. Some comedic elements as well.
- CreatorYoshiyuki TominoHajime YatateStarsHirotaka SuzuokiTôru FuruyaToshio FurukawaIn the war between the Earth Federation and Zeon, a young and inexperienced crew find themselves on a new spaceship. Their best hope of making it through the conflict is the Gundam, a giant humanoid robot, and its gifted teenage pilot. The phenomenon that started it all, the big boy of all mech anime. Rather than try a Saturday morning cartoon plot much like a lot of other mech anime at the time, Yoshiyuki Tomino wanted to make something more based in reality and show the horror of war. The show has a grim tone throughout and tackles many subjects about war and what it does to people. The animation does not hold up to today's standards but it's serviceable in my opinion because the story it's trying to tell is timeless and heart breaking. I can't recommend it to everybody but if you can stomach the old animation please give it a shot.
- CreatorYoshiyuki TominoStarsDaisuke NamikawaKôji TsujitaniMegumi HayashibaraIn a space colony, a young boy discovers a cadre of terrorists and innocently decides to help them. One of the many spin off series that takes place during the original One Year War from the first series, stakes place in one of the neutral space colonies. Deals with how a child sees war and how precious friendships can be. A very emotional tale that will exhaust you. Only a handful of episodes long.
- StarsSteve StaleySteve KramerDebra RogersDuring a one-year war, a young lieutenant leads a mobile suit team against a secret Zeon weapon, meeting its pilot who questions the morality of the war.Another spin off series, this one has spectacular animation and takes place on earth with land based mobile suits. Great action and wonderful characters. Anchored by a captivating love story. I usually tell people to start here with Gundam as this is just a mini series that gives a taste of what the series is all about.
- CreatorShûichi AsôStarsHiroshi KamiyaDaisuke OnoNobunaga ShimazakiSaiki Kusuo is a powerful psychic who hates attracting attention, yet he is surrounded by colorful characters who always find a way to remove him from his everyday life.Another gut busting hilarious series about an overpowered psychic. Character is so absurdly powerful that he is a borderline god but really he just wants a normal life and to be left alone. Lots of really funny episodes in which his friends are trying to hang out with him or get Saiki's attention and he does Death Note tier planning just to avoid a social situation. Episodes consist of 2-3 stories that vary in length, sometimes a story will take up an entire episode. Starts out mildly funny but by the second episode it will absolutely piss your pants laughing and it only gets funnier from there. A personal favorite of mine and my brother's.
