- DirectorJ. Stuart BlacktonStarsPat HartiganJulia ArthurWilliam HumphreyThe persecution of the children of Israel by the Egyptians. Now there arose up a new king in Egypt. And he said unto his people. Behold, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we. Let us set over them taskmasters to afflict them with their burdens. (Exodus, chapter I.) The first scenes show the Egyptian court and King Pharaoh commanding the slave drivers to beat the Hebrew toilers who show signs of rebellion. Pharaoh notices this and, calling his scribes, orders that a decree be published that every man-child born to the Hebrews be killed. The parchment is prepared and is read in Pharaohs court in the presence of Pharaohs daughter, who hears and pleads in vain for his clemency. Pharaohs Decree: Every male child that is born to the Hebrews shall be cast into the river. The Egyptians ruthlessly proceed to carry out the decree and seize the male children from the arms of the Hebrew mothers. Here we are shown the interior of a Hebrew dwelling. The child Moses is in a cradle and his mother is bending over him, utterly unconscious of the cruel edict of King Pharaoh. The sister of Moses is shown attending to household duties and she takes a pitcher and goes to the well to draw water. There she learns of the slaughter of the innocents and hastens back and tells the mother of the cruel scenes she has witnessed. They decide to hide the child Moses by the river, and the cradle or ark is covered and carried between them to a marsh, where they plaster the outside with soft mud to keep out the water, and placing the child therein, his sister remains nearby to watch what will become of him. And the daughter of Pharaoh came down to wash herself at the river; and her maidens walked along by the rivers edge; and when she saw the ark among the flags she sent her maid to fetch it. And when she had opened it she saw the child; and, behold, the babe wept, and she had compassion on him. Pharaohs daughter fondles and pets the crying child and decides that she will keep him for her own. The sister of Moses approaches and suggests that she call a nurse of the Hebrew women and she, of course, called the childs mother. And Pharaohs daughter said unto her, Take this child away and nurse it for me and I will give thee thy wages. And the woman took the child and nursed it. Pharaoh is informed of his daughters caprice and demands to see the child. He orders it away, but his daughter embraces him and pleads so hard for the life of the child that he consents and gives it his protection and blessing. A fitting ending is a picture of the mother and sister of Moses again fondling their own and giving thanks to God for their unexpected good fortune. The first reel of this series ended with the child Moses being adopted by Pharaohs daughter. The Hebrews are still under bondage, and we see them laboring in the brick fields, beaten by the taskmasters, as they build those gigantic specimens of Egyptian architecture, many of which stand to this day. Moses has been reared and educated in the Egyptian court, and is now in the prime of life, but he does not forget that he is of Hebrew blood, and, as he watches his brethren in their slavery, his blood boils at the outrages and he looks toward Heaven and cries, How long, oh Lord, how long? A number of Hebrews are digging clay, which is filled into baskets. The load is too heavy for one of the laborers, and the taskmaster beats him unmercifully. Moses sees this and kills the taskmaster. T The other Hebrew slaves, horrified at the enormity of the act, run away, and Moses, afraid of the consequences, hastily buries the body in the clay pit. Two days after this, Moses seeks to separate two of his brethren who are quarreling, and one of them says: Wilt thou kill me as thou didst the Egyptian? Moses is terrified when he knows that his crime is known, and decides to flee from the country. He seeks refuge in the home of a Hebrew laborer and bargains for a suit of the laborers garments, with which he disguises himself; he also purchases provisions and a water bottle, and departs. Moses is seen crossing the desert. Tired and dusty, he rests and drinks from his water flask. Still toiling on through the arid desert, he reaches an eminence and looks hack to see if he is being followed, and, seeing no one, he gives thanks for his deliverance. Moses has at last reached the land of Midian. He discovers a well and refreshes and rests himself. While he is resting seven daughters of Jethro, a Midianite, come to the well to draw water for their sheep and cattle. Other herdsmen also come to the well and ungallantly drive away the maidens, but Moses comes to their aid, and draws the water for them. The home of Jethro, the priest of Midian, father of the seven maidens. They enter and tell of the encounter at the well, and how they were aided by a Hebrew traveler. He says the man must be his guest, and hastens to the well and greets Moses and invites him to the shelter of his house, which offer is accepted. Moses enters the home of the priest of Midian, where he is effusively greeted by the whole household, and we see him seated and enjoying a meal with the family. (And Moses was content to dwell with the manand he gave Moses his daughter, Zipporah, to wife.) (Forty years later). Moses is now a shepherd, and, while tending his flocks in the land of Midian. The voice of God speaks to him out of a burning bush and commands him to return to Egypt and deliver his brethren out of the bondage of the Egyptians. Moses bids farewell to Jethro, his father-in-law, and, with his family, journeys to Egypt. On the way he meets Aaron, who had been, commanded by the Lord to meet Moses, and together they arrive at the Egyptian court. The court of Pharaoh, a young man, the elder Pharaoh having died while Moses was in Midian. The officials announce the new arrivals, and Moses and Aaron are ushered in and demand, in the name of the Lord, that the Children of Israel be set free. The Egyptian king refuses, and Moses tells him that if he does not consent the wrath of God will come on all the Egyptians. Moses prays to the Lord for advice, and is commanded to work a miracle before the Egyptian monarch to convince him that it is the Lord, the God of the Israelites, who demands the deliverance of His people. Moses and Aaron appear before Pharaoh again. Aaron casts his rod upon the ground and it becomes a serpent. Pharaoh is amazed, but he still refuses to free the Children of Israel. Pharaohs continued refusal brings upon Egypt the ten plagues. Moses finds Pharaoh near the rivers edge and again asks that his people be allowed to go free. When Pharaoh denies again. Aaron smites the water of the river with his rod and the waters are turned into blood. Again Moses appears before Pharaoh and again Pharaoh refuses his request. As God had commanded, Moses stretches his hand toward heaven and immediately a great storm of hail and lightning, such as they had never seen, descends on Egypt, killing man and beast and striking terror to the heart of Pharaoh. Pharaohs heart was again hardened and he still refuses to free the Hebrew children. Again Moses stretches his hand toward heaven, and a thick darkness, a darkness that might be felt, covered the land for three days, so that no one was able to rise from his place. The last and most terrible plague visited on Egypt for Pharaohs continued refusal is the death of all the Egyptian first born. The Feast of the Passover is instituted at this time. Moses directing all the Hebrew people to observe the Feast by killing and preparing a lamb. Moses commands the Children of Israel to sprinkle the door posts on both sides and on top with the blood of the lamb and on every house where they are to eat the Feast of the Passover, and to prepare the Feast. The Feast of the Passover is observed, according to the instructions of Moses, by every Jewish family in Egypt, the Feast consisting of roast lamb with unleavened bread and herbs. The same night that the Feast of the Passover is being observed by the Israelites, the Angel of Death passes over the land of Egypt in the last plague, the death of the first born. The Angel of Death enters every Egyptian home where there is no blood on the doorposts, and the first born of every Egyptian family is slain, from the first born in Pharaohs household to the first born of the captive in the dungeons. The Angel of Death, however, passes by every Jewish home, as God had promised to Moses that where He saw the blood on the doorposts He would pass them over and the plague should not be upon them. In Pharaohs palace Pharaoh and his court are feasting, when the Angel of Death enters and Pharaohs own first born is slain. Pharaoh is overcome with grief at this terrible visitation and sends for Moses and Aaron immediately. The death of his first born softens the heart of Pharaoh and when Moses and Aaron now appear before him he commands them to take the Children of Israel and to depart out of the land of Egypt. Moses and Aaron give the command to the Hebrew people, who immediately gather together their possessions and prepare to leave the land of their bondage with reverent and thankful hearts. With Moses and Aaron as leaders, the Israelites begin their exodus from Egypt, the land of the Pharaohs, where they had been slaves for so many years.

- DirectorHanns Heinz EwersStellan RyeStarsPaul WegenerGrete BergerLyda SalmonovaBalduin, a student of Prague, leaves his roystering companions in the beer garden, when he finds he has reached the end of his resources. He is scarcely seated in a quiet corner when a hideous, shriveled-up old man taps him upon the shoulder and whispers vaguely of a big inheritance for Prague's finest swordsman and wildest student if he will enter into a certain agreement. Balduin rebuffs him, satirically asking his weird companion to procure him "the luckiest ticket in a lottery or a doweried wife." The old man goes off chuckling and thence onward persistently shadows Balduin, exerting a sinister influence over him, while Balduin is still disconsolate under the frowns of fortune. The Countess Margit Schwarzenberg, hunting with her cousin, to whom her father has betrothed her, meets with an accident. She is thrown over her horse's head into a river, but Balduin, who has been directed to the spot by his evil genius, plunges in and rescues her. Subsequently Balduin calls to inquire as to her condition at the castle of her father, the count, but be makes a hurried departure when Baron Waldis arrives, the contrast in their appearance discrediting him. His desire to win the countess and to humiliate the baron becomes so pronounced that he readily accedes to the compact suggested by Scapinelli, the old man, who has so pertinaciously dogged his footsteps, particularly when he learns that untold wealth and power will be his when he assigns to the other the right to take from his room whatever he chooses for his own use as he desires. The agreement is signed. Balduin receives a shower of gold and notes as his portion; Scapinelli takes Balduin's soul exposed in concrete form by his shadow. Balduin prosecutes his love affair assiduously and with apparent success, till the baron is informed of it by a jealous gypsy girl. He challenges Balduin to a duel, and the latter, assured of his superiority as a fencer, readily agrees. Count Schwarzenberg learns of the impending duel and appeals to Balduin not to kill "my sister's child, my daughter's future husband, and my heir." Balduin gives his promise, but when he goes to the venue of the duel he meets, his own counterpart stalking away derisively wiping his gory sword on his cloak. Balduin turns and in the far distance sees the dying victim of the deed he swore he would not do. He rushes from the spot horror-stricken. When he regains sufficient composure he makes his way to the castle of the count, but is refused admission. Determined to explain that he had no complicity in the death of the baron, Balduin climbs into a room in which the countess is seated. She receives him coldly, but soon succumbs to his ardent wooing. Just as he seeks to leave her she notices he has no shadow and that the mirror gives no reflection of him; and she drops back affrighted, the ghastly apparition of himself which takes shape in the corner of the room sends Balduin scuttling away from the castle in a paroxysm of terror. He makes a frenzied flight through a woodland estate and the streets of Prague, but wherever he stops to recover his breath he is haunted by the counterpart of himself. He reaches his rooms and draws a murderous looking fire-arm from its case. As the phantasmagorical figure strides towards him with a sinister grin, he fires, and in a few minutes the blood gushes from his own side from a fatal wound.
- DirectorGeorge MelfordStarsEdward ClisbeeJane WolfeMarin SaisThe Lamberts give a charity ball for the benefit of the Widows' and Orphans' Fund. Captain Doane is among the guests. The young officer is in love with Jane, the general's daughter. During the affair, he secures her consent to be his wife. Jane's parents both favor Doane's suit. General Lambert places the box containing the receipts of the ball on his library tale. A moment later he is called away. At the same time, Jack, his son, loses heavily at cards to a professional sharp. The man holds several I.O.U.'s for which he demands payment. Desperate, Jack promises to let him have the money at once. The boy hastens home. Entering the library, he sees the cash box. Abstracting the money. Jack gives it to the gambler, who waits outside. General Lambert receives a telegram, stating that war has been declared between Great Britain and the Boers. He spreads the news. The general relates an incident of the first Boer campaign, telling how one of his comrades had been treacherously slain by the Boers. Turning to Jack, the father bids him avenge the man's death in the coming fray. Jack, however, confronts the knowledge that he is a thief. Entering the library he desperately searches for a way out. He decides upon the course he must follow. Writing a confession of his guilt, the boy places the note where it can be found and then picks up a revolver. Doane enters the room and views the proceedings in amazed silence. He grasps Jack's hand, just as the boy is about to shoot himself. Jack breaks down. The note tells Doane the whole miserable story. He promises Jack to find a way to clear him. General Lambert and the board of trustees enter the room after Jack leaves. They are about to look for the money, when Doane announces that he has stolen it. Shocked, the general calls in the guests and tells them the story. Jane is brokenhearted at her lover's supposed dishonesty. Disgraced, Captain Doane returns home where he receives a note, demanding his resignation. He complies with the order. The next day, he sees his beloved regiment leave for the front. Another officer marches past, in command of the company that was his. His health undermined by the strain, Doane is stricken with brain fever. When her recovers, a few weeks later, the man enlists under an assumed name and is sent to the Transvaal. By rare good fortune, Doane meets Jack. The young officer recognizes in the private, the man who had saved him from disgrace. Jack succeeds in securing Doane as his orderly. The two armies meet in a terrific battle. The Boers, under General Jaubert, successfully hold the British in check. Lieutenant Lambert is sent to one of the British commanders with dispatches. He is accompanied by Doane. On their way they discover a Boer force creeping upon the British flank. Their warning saves the English troops from destruction. From the top of a hill, the Boers under Jaubert are inflicting terrible punishment upon the British by means of heavy siege guns. A charge gradually drives the Boers back. The British succeed in dislodging their foe from shelter by means of the hail of death from rapid-fire guns. With a superb rush, the English gain the ton of the hill and capture the battery that has inflicted the most damage. Jack and Doane are foremost in the fray. The battery is blown skyward. Jack and Doane's unusual valor win them the commendation of the general in command. Doane wearily returns to his tent. His mind goes back to the night of the ball. His hand wanders to the pocket over his heart and brings to view the picture of Jane. Sadly he gazes upon the face of the girl whose love he had surrendered. With a sigh, the man replaces the picture in its resting place. In another tent, a totally different scene is transpiring. Torn by his conscience, Jack is penning a confession which exonerates Doane, whom he has grown to idolize. Leaving his tent, he hands the letter to Doane, requesting him to keep it in event of his death. He informs his savior that should death overtake him on the field, he wishes to die with the knowledge that he had made reparation. Doane watches the boy depart. He slowly tears the letter to pieces. That day another attack is made upon the Boers. The hills are covered with the heavy smoke of artillery and thousands of rifles. The Lancers sweep the enemy before them in a heroic charge. Jack, leading a bayonet charge against a Boer battery, is struck by a bullet and falls. Fighting like fury, Doane rescues the boy and carries him off the field. Immediately afterward, Doane wires the Lamberts, telling them of Jack's injury. Upon receipt of the message, Jane immediately announces her determination to go to her brother's side. Her father's influence enables her to go to the front as a Red Cross nurse. She reaches Jack's force and is assigned to his hospital tent. As she enters the tent, she sees Doane bending over her brother. Doane is electrified at the sight of his sweetheart. Remembering the offense with which he was charged, the girl draws back in contempt. Jack sees the movement and realizes what caused it. With tears streaming down his face, and despite Doane's efforts to stop him. the boy confesses his story. Thunderstruck, Jane stares at Doane. The man turns away in distress. The next moment. Jane's hand is on his arm. She pleads with him for forgiveness. Surrounded, and facing defeat, the Boers fight with the desperation born of despair. Again and again their fire sweeps the charging British, mowing them down like grass. From the overlooking hills the batteries of the English hurl their deadly missiles in the midst of the shelters which cover the Boers. Doane, assigned to one of the batteries, imbues his comrades with heroic spirit. Time and again the Boers strive to capture the battery, their rifle fire brings the men down one by one. Doane finally remains the sole survivor, but the battery still belches forth the shots placed in it by the men who had manned them. A Boer shell lands next to Doane's gun and explodes. When the smoke lifts, the hero strives in vain to arise. Blood gushes from his eyes. Jane is by her brother's bedside when Doane is brought in on a stretcher. She anxiously hovers over the doctor as he examines the man. The surgeon finally declares that while Doane will recover, he will be blind for life. The girl nurses her sweetheart and brings him back to health. Jack tells his story to the commanding officer. He reveals Doane's nobility and the sacrifice he had made. When Doane recovers the story of his heroism has been spread broadcast. The War Office reinstates him to his former rank and in addition Doane receives a medal of valor. Jane is by her hero's side when the emblem is placed upon his breast.

As they become older, their sorrow increases until one day the old wife calls upon the Lord and prays that they may have a child to gladden their declining years. An angel appears in answer to her prayer and prophecies that she shall have a son but that his hair must never be cut. The angel also declares that the son shall begin to deliver Israel out of the hands of the Philistines. In due time Manoah's wife has a son and names him Samson. As he grows to manhood, his extraordinary strength is the marvel of his parents and the community. When he has attained a man's estate he goes to Timmath, where he meets and learns to love Zorah, a Philistine's beautiful daughter. Samson overcomes his father's objections to his marrying a Philistine maiden, and he conducts his parents to Timmath that they may see his bride. While they are nearing the Vineyard of Timmath a young lion roars at Samson. He becomes imbued with the spirit of the Lord, and after struggling with the beast he breaks its jaws. Arrived at Timmath with his parents the nuptial feast is arranged for and the betrothal is announced. During the interim before his marriage, Samson returns to the spot where he slew the lion and finds that bees have gathered there and have deposited honey in the carcass, Thus at his wedding feast he proposes to his guests the riddle, "Out of the eater came forth meat and out of the strong came forth sweetness," and he offers to give to him who solves the riddle 30 sheets and 30 changes of garments. Unable to answer the riddle, the Philistines go to Zorah, and threaten her with death unless she draws Samson out and obtains for them the answer. She fights against their threats and persuasions but she finally weakens and after obtaining the answer from Samson she tells the Philistines. When the final day arrives and they answer the riddle Samson is deeply wrought up against his wife because he realizes her deceit. In his anger he renounces her and leaves her with her father. However, when his anger cools he returns and wishes to become reconciled. But in the meantime Zorah's father has given her to another. Samson's anger knows no bounds and he goes into the cornfields of the Philistines' and applies the fire brand. Driven to despair, the Philistines blame Zorah's father as the author of their misfortunes and they burn his house consuming Zorah and her father. Weary of the world, Samson seeks a cave on the top of the rock of Etan and dwells there. But the Philistines cannot rest in their hatred for Samson. They gather an army together and go to take their revenge on their enemy and upon the field of Ramath-Lehi, Samson meets the army of the Philistines and single-handed, with the jawbone of an ass he gives them battle, slaying a thousand soldiers in putting the remainder to flight. Samson then goes to the city of Gaze and strikes terror into the hearts of the people by his feats of strength. Sihon, the ruler of the Philistines, plots to take Samson prisoner, and he has the gates of the city locked against him. But when Samson is ready to leave, he wrenches the huge gates from their hinges and carries them away. Samson now meets the beautiful Delilah and is fascinated by her charms. Neither is she blind to the beauty or his strength and she receives him with favor. Making capital of their love Sihon entices Delilah to ascertain from Samson wherein his great strength lies. She refuses but Sihon convinces her that it is a matter of loyalty to her religion and people and she consents. She leads him to her home and employs her charms to fascinate him and she soothes and coaxes him as only a woman can until he is overcome and tells her: "There hath not come a razor upon mine head. If I be shaven then my strength will go from me." Then a prey to her seductions, he falls asleep and she cuts off his locks and summons Sihon and the soldiers. Then Samson is bound and thrown into prison where his eyes are put out with hot irons. He is then made to grind in the prison house and he is whipped as he works like an animal. When Samson's strength is gone he is for the moment forgotten and as the time passes his hair begins to grow out again. And when Samson's hair is again grown out the Philistines gather in the Temple and make merry and call for Samson that he may make sport for them. Samson is taken from the prison and led into the temple by a small boy. He is jeered and hooted at by the Philistines and is made to bow and do homage to Dagon the fishguard. Then Samson whispers to his boy guide to lead him to the sustaining pillars of the temple that he may lean upon them. Samson now calls upon the Lord for strength that he may be avenged for the loss of his eyes. The populace are wild with insane joy as they behold the once mighty man now their clown. As they rail and jeer him he places his mighty shoulders to the huge pillars. The frenzied mocking is frozen upon their lips and there is an awful silence. Then the massive pillars totter and crumble before his touch, the magnificent temple curves, collapses and tumbles upon the multitude. In that hour of death, the old, blind, dying Samson totters and crawls over the ruins until he finds a certain form, Delilah, and he falls upon the body of the faithless one he loved.

To do this, she goes to Lander's office that night and unable to open the safe, because Landers has anticipated some such move on her part and changed the combination, she telephones to police headquarters and asks them to send up an expert to open the safe. This is done and while Harriet and the expert are still in the office (Harriet with the negatives in her hand) Landers enters and snatches the negatives from her. He has drawn his pistol and as he stands there talking with the safe expert, Harriet snatches the pistol from his hand and shoots the negatives to pieces as they lay on Lander's desk. The next day she sends them to Jim with a note telling him that all the evidence the lobby had against him is enclosed and asking him in future to try to live up to his mother's belief in him.

Henry King and Ruth Roland starred in each episode, playing different roles each time, with a variety of supporting players who varied from one episode to another. Each episode told a complete and individual story, but they were all inter-related by a uniform theme. Although there were no cliff-hanger endings, each episode did, in fact, end with a challenge to the audience: Who was responsible for the misfortune of the principal characters? The titles of the twelve episodes were: #1: The Price of Fame; #2: The Pursuit of Pleasure; #3: When Justice Sleeps; #4: The Love Liar; #5: Unto Herself Alone; #6: Houses of Glass; #7: Blue Blood and Yellow; #8: Today and Tomorrow; #9: For the Commonwealth; #10: Pomp of Earth; #11: The Fruit of Folly; #12: Toil and Tyranny.

FrenchDenton rides into Yellow Ridge with a money-belt filled after years of toil in the mines beyond the desert. The local gamblers covet the fortune but fail to get Steve to try the roulette table until the enticer, Trixie, comes to exercise her charms on him. He blindly follows her lead and is watching the wheel with stern stare when a telegram is received. He asks the woman to read it. She lies when she says it contains good news, for it tells of his mother's critical illness. In the morning Steve awakes to find his belt is empty. In his feverish search through his pockets, he comes upon the telegram. As the truth dawns he goes to the telegraph office to send home a wire. The operator hands him the news that his mother has died. Wild with rage, he shoots up the town and drives away with Trixie lying limp over his horse before him. His heart is now filled with hate for all women and Trixie becomes his slave in a community where he tolerates only the scum of the section. Across the desert comes a pack train of Mississippi farmers who have left their fertile valleys to hunt for gold. Their water is all but gone and their stock is fagged. Their leaders plead with Steve for aid, but the white race may expect nothing from him. Back to the wailing women and children go the despondent leaders. Mary Jane, a waif among them, is not cowed by the story they tell, and by night she goes to repeat their please to the harsh white man. He looks upon her as another victim to share Trixie's lot, but her innocent, fearless attitude toward him makes him hesitate. Meanwhile, his men have carried off the women of the train. As the men pursue and bloodshed is in the air, Steve yields to the little girl and trades the safety of those people for his rich mine, leaves his wealth to his followers and guides the strangers out of the desert.

- DirectorMarshall NeilanStarsWill MachinEdith JohnsonBessie EytonAaron Strong is a seafaring man. Not only has he won an honest living as the captain of a sailing vessel, but he is unusually happy in the love of his young wife, Maybelle. When Aaron Strong embarks on his voyages, Sandy Hodge, his wife's father, an old sea salt of Scottish descent, cares for Maybelle. A terrific storm occurs at sea and Aaron's frail craft is smashed to pieces. He tries to save himself by escaping in a dory, but he finally succumbs after scrawling a note to his wife. Later the little boat is washed ashore with his lifeless body. It is found by some fisherman, and when Maybelle is informed of her husband's death she falls unconscious to the floor knocking a lamp over which burns her hand. Months following when her two children are born, a boy and a girl, each bears a red mark on his hand, similar to the one on their mother's hand which was caused by the falling lamp. Maybelle never recovers from the shock of her husband's death, and she soon dies. The two children are left to the care of old Sandy. Although he secretly loves the little chap who so resembles Sandy's beloved daughter, yet when the boy runs away from home, old Sandy is not at all conscience stricken. The boy falls in with a gang of toughs and has become known as "Red Hand" leader of a gang of crooks. Fourteen years later, Maybelle Strong, Joe's twin sister, teaches a little school in Oceancove. Old Sandy never talks to her of her brother, whom she has almost forgotten, but the old Scotch grandfather insists that Maybelle bring home to him her pay envelope, for Sandy is thrifty. In the city there is a rivalry among the "gun men" and Sid Aldrich, gang leader, gambler and crook, flees the city. He arrives at Oceancove seeking seclusion. There he meets Maybelle Strong, who learns to love the stranger. Aldrich plots to entice Maybelle to the city. Chided by the irate Sandy because she has expended a small amount of her earnings for a new hat, Maybelle promises to go with Aldrich upon his agreement to marry her when they reach the city. "Boss" Kipper, a ward politician, is introduced to Maybelle by Aldrich, who poses as Kipper's nephew. Kipper is immediately attracted to the girl. Summoned hurriedly from the room, through the instrumentality of Fate, Kipper places the now unconscious Maybelle into the keeping of Joe Strong, alias "Red Hand," who is one of "Boss" Kipper's strongest followers. While watching over the girl, "Red Hand" espies the birthmark on her hand; he also glances at the birthmark on his own hand. He has a vague memory of a little sister, marked like himself through a mother's suffering. His better nature comes to the front, and he resolves to save the girl at any cost. "Boss" Kipper returns to the room. He finds the door locked and barred. He orders his henchmen to shatter it. In the meantime Joe Strong runs to the telephone, summons the police and the girl is rescued just in time. The "Boss" vows revenge on Joe Strong. Strong has been endeavoring to live straight since he rescued Maybelle, and his girl friend, Mame of the tenements, in ill health, has received all of Joe's attention. He is informed that the girl must be sent to a sanitarium for treatment if her life would be saved. Kipper plots with Aldrich, the gambler. Joe is tempted to rob a home. He finds there Aldrich confronting Maybelle, whom Joe had so recently saved. Joe takes the life of the unscrupulous gambler, and tells Maybelle to claim that she shot the man in self-defense. Joe escapes the house and joins the girl of the tenements whom he loves, and who is awaiting him at the boat landing. As he buys his transportation, Joe comes face to face with Detective Treem. Joe believes all is lost. The detective, however, believing that the death of Aldrich was for the good of mankind, and appreciating that Joe has been the victim of a frame-up, tells him to "beat it," and Joe Strong and his girl sail away from the city and all its wickedness.

Ben Merrill, an unscrupulous contractor, meets Jim's wife in Natchez, her home town, and induces her to go with him to New Orleans. She deserts her baby and goes. In New Orleans a levee contractor comes to Merrill with the proposition that they take the contract for a new levee to be built at Gilgal. Merrill accepts and leaves New Orleans without telling the woman where he is going, and she is left to take care of herself. After the war Jim returns to Natchez and finds that his wife has deserted their little boy, and no one knows where she is. He takes the boy, Little Breeches, and Banty Tim, a negro, who has saved his life during the war, and returns to Gilgal. He is welcomed by Kate Taggart, the daughter of the village storekeeper. Jim's wife yearns for her baby and returns. Jim forgives her for the child's sake. The high waters are coming on and Merrill is afraid that the levee will not hold. He plans to lay the blame on Jim and the negro. He arouses the suspicion of the townspeople against the negro and Jim is forced to fight for Banty Tim on several occasions. Merrill meets Jim's wife and induces her to loosen the sandbags and leave the water into the village. She escapes in a boat, the bottom of which has been cut by Merrill. In the middle of the stream the boat begins to sink and Banty Tim goes to her rescue. The negro is accused of breaking the levee and then escaping. Jim offers his life as a forfeit if the negro does not return by sunrise. The next day the village people are at Indian Mound, and the men are about to hang Jim because Banty Tim has not come back. Just then he comes on with Little Breeches, who tells of his rescue by the negro. A year later Jim is again engineer of the "Prairie Belle." In a race with another boat the engines become overheated. Merrill is aboard and Jim has him locked in the oil room. When the boat takes fire Jim goes and opens the door of the oil room and finds his son there with Merrill. While they are trying to escape the boilers explode. Jim is rescued from the debris by Banty Tim. Some time later Jim's wife having died, he and Little Breeches and Kate and Banty Tim are united in a happy family.

At the fashion show, Céleste appears and declares Lola an impostor, but the latter is declared "the best dressed woman" by the judges. Raoul, realizing that Lola has been faithful, returns to her at the cafe and they are happily reunited.
