- DirectorMarc WebbStarsZooey DeschanelJoseph Gordon-LevittGeoffrey ArendAfter being dumped by the girl he believes to be his soulmate, hopeless romantic Tom Hansen reflects on their relationship to try and figure out where things went wrong and how he can win her back.Because I'm a hopeless romantic and have had my heart broken more times than I can count.
- DirectorSofia CoppolaStarsKirsten DunstJosh HartnettJames WoodsA group of male friends become obsessed with five mysterious sisters who are sheltered by their strict, religious parents in suburban Detroit in the mid 1970s.It's moody, the soundtrack and dreamy filters are everything, the narration is beautiful, it has Kirsten Dunst, and it has the iconic line: "Obviously, Doctor, you've never been a thirteen-year-old girl." Well done, Sofia Coppola!
- DirectorSam MendesStarsKevin SpaceyAnnette BeningThora BirchA sexually frustrated suburban father has a mid-life crisis after becoming infatuated with his daughter's best friend.
- DirectorRyan MurphyStarsJoseph CrossAnnette BeningBrian CoxA teenage boy comes of age in the 1970's, sent by his neurotic, pretentious mother to live with a jolly, vulgar psychiatrist and his eccentric extended family.
- DirectorJonathan GlazerStarsScarlett JohanssonJeremy McWilliamsLynsey Taylor MackayA mysterious young woman seduces lonely men in the evening hours in Scotland. However, events lead her to begin a process of self-discovery.Super weird and super cerebral but with a message. Plus I'll watch anything with ScarJo.
- DirectorRobert EggersStarsAnya Taylor-JoyRalph InesonKate DickieA family in 1630s New England is torn apart by the forces of witchcraft, black magic and possession.MUST WATCH WITH SUBTITLES. One of the most original and terrifying horror films I've ever seen. The ending still gives me chills every time.
- DirectorAri AsterStarsFlorence PughJack ReynorVilhelm BlomgrenA couple travels to Northern Europe to visit a rural hometown's fabled Swedish mid-summer festival. What begins as an idyllic retreat quickly devolves into an increasingly violent and bizarre competition at the hands of a pagan cult.Hard to watch, but impossible to look away. The cinematography is perfect and so is the acting.
- DirectorDavid Robert MitchellStarsMaika MonroeKeir GilchristOlivia LuccardiA young woman is followed by an unknown supernatural force after a sexual encounter. When I saw this in a vintage theatre, my friends and I were terrified. It's very unique and there are some scenes that still give me chills--HINT: tall man. And the soundtrack is epic!
- DirectorSofia CoppolaStarsKatie ChangIsrael BroussardEmma WatsonInspired by actual events, a group of fame-obsessed teenagers use the internet to track celebrities' whereabouts in order to rob their homes.Maybe it's because I like watching Hermione Granger do bad things like smoking heroin/oxy, breaking and entering celebrity homes, stealing, and talking about how Jude Law will not stop texting her, but I fell in love with this movie the first time, and the fact that it is a true story blows me away every time. The acting is perfect, and it shows how vapid and vain our youth have become. Also "The Secret" being brought up is so hilarious and great. My two favorite lines: "Let's go to Paris's. I wanna rob." and before Nicki (Emma Watson) is going to trial, she asks, "Mom, can I have a 5mg Adderall?"
- DirectorAlfonso Gomez-RejonStarsThomas MannRJ CylerOlivia CookeHigh schooler Greg, who spends most of his time making parodies of classic movies with his co-worker Earl, finds his outlook forever altered after befriending a classmate who has just been diagnosed with cancer. It breaks your heart, but is so beautifully done. Also I love anything with Olivia Cooke.
- DirectorMarco KreuzpaintnerStarsRobert StadloberKostja UllmannMiriam MorgensternA close friendship between two crew teammates is tested when one slowly discovers he's gay and attracted to the other.Broke my heart in high school. Very relatable film for young gay/bi/curious guys.
- DirectorLuca GuadagninoStarsTimothée ChalametArmie HammerMichael StuhlbargIn 1980s Italy, romance blossoms between a seventeen-year-old student and the older man hired as his father's research assistant.Rips my heart out every time, but it's so masterfully shot, and the performances from Chalamet and Hammer, the cinematography, taking us back in time in Italy, and the angst and longing is so familiar. Also Elio's father's monologue near the ending is one of the best in any LGBT film ever. MUST WATCH.
- DirectorJames McTeigueStarsHugo WeavingNatalie PortmanRupert GravesIn a future British dystopian society, a shadowy freedom fighter, known only by the alias of "V", plots to overthrow the tyrannical government - with the help of a young woman.
- DirectorSam LevinsonStarsOdessa YoungAbraSuki WaterhouseAfter a malicious data hack exposes the secrets of the perpetually American town of Salem, chaos descends and four girls must fight to survive, while coping with the hack themselves.Bad-ass bitches with a loud and clear message. One of the craziest films I've ever seen. Redolent of The Purge films.
- DirectorChristopher NolanStarsChristian BaleHeath LedgerAaron EckhartWhen the menace known as the Joker wreaks havoc and chaos on the people of Gotham, Batman must accept one of the greatest psychological and physical tests of his ability to fight injustice. The best Batman movie yet. Heath Ledger made the movie.
- DirectorTodd PhillipsStarsJoaquin PhoenixRobert De NiroZazie BeetzDuring the 1980s, a failed stand-up comedian is driven insane and turns to a life of crime and chaos in Gotham City while becoming an infamous psychopathic crime figure.Saw it a few times in theatres. Sad but amazing film.
- DirectorBong Joon HoStarsSong Kang-hoLee Sun-kyunCho Yeo-jeongGreed and class discrimination threaten the newly-formed symbiotic relationship between the wealthy Park family and the destitute Kim clan. One of the best films I have ever seen. I love black comedy and adding in the thriller aspect makes this movie perfect. I've seen it at least 4-5 times and am still always blown away.
- DirectorNeil ArmfieldStarsHeath LedgerAbbie CornishGeoffrey RushA poet falls in love with an art student who gravitates to his bohemian lifestyle -- and his love of heroin. Hooked as much on one another as they are on the drug, their relationship alternates between states of oblivion, self-destruction, and despair."When you can stop, you don't want to. When you want to stop, you can't." Beautiful love story depicting the honeymoon phase of heroin use and the hell of getting off. Both Cornish and Ledger kill it in this one.
- DirectorDarren AronofskyStarsEllen BurstynJared LetoJennifer ConnellyThe drug-induced utopias of four Coney Island people are shattered when their addictions run deep..Hard to watch, but worth it.
- DirectorWes AndersonStarsJared GilmanKara HaywardBruce WillisTwo 12-year-olds, who live on an island, fall in love with each other and elope into the wilderness. While people set out on a search mission, a violent storm approaching them catches their attention.Adorable movie with beautiful cinematography that will have you feeling like a kid again.
