Angélica María is perhaps the only Mexican actress who has successfully made the transition from child star to living legend. Her career began when she was only four-years-old. She was barely a teenager when she played the leading role in the Mexican version of the play The Bad Seed. She was awarded for her outstanding performance, playing a cute serial-killer girl. After that, she began a successful career as pop singer. From 1962 to her marriage, in 1975, she was know as "The girlfriend of the youth" and "The girlfriend of America" (the continent, not the country). She made a lot of rock n' roll films with costars Enrique Guzmán, César Costa and Alberto Vázquez, becoming a sort of Mexican Doris Day, Suzanne Pleshette and Sandra Dee, together in the same virginal body. On 1967, she went psychedelic and made a film which may be her best: Cinco de chocolate y uno de fresa (1967). Playing a sweet nun who eats mushrooms and becomes a sort of subversive wonder-woman, Angélica came on age and became hype without betraying her popsicle image. The 70s were the years of the telenovelas (Mexican soap operas) and Angélica María changed again. She was the young lady in numberless love stories and conquered the hearts of a generation of housewives who became faithful fans of her. She switched easily between TV and musical theater (she was Gigi and Woman of the Year) but practically retired from movie acting. She returned to the screen on mid 80s but nothing happened. She closely watched her daughter's career in show business (as her own mother closely watched hers) and returned to TV in mid 90s, portraying mothers and other mature roles. Nowadays, she combines TV acting with musical theater performing. Angélica María's only marriage, to singer Raúl Vale, ended in divorce after some years. She hasn't married again. Maybe she wants to be the eternal girlfriend of a generation of Mexicans.- Actress

A self-assured and stylish actress, Barbara Murray was born into a showbusiness family, the daughter of actors and granddaughter of professional ballroom dancers. She was first thrust into the limelight as a six-year-old, dancing in the family variety act. Murray and her mother were evacuated to Wales upon the outbreak of World War II.
In the immediate aftermath of the war, she found work on stage scarce and instead made ends meet as a photographic model. However, at seventeen, she successfully auditioned with the Rank Company of Youth (famously dubbed the "Charm School"). She was offered a five-year contract at a salary of £10 a week to be groomed for B-movie stardom at a converted church hall next to Rank's two-stage Highbury Studio, under the tutelage of a formidable martinet named Mollie Terraine. Her fellow Charm School graduates included Christopher Lee and Diana Dors. Murray's theatrical and film debuts eventually coincided in 1949, the former in regional repertory at the Newcastle Playhouse, the latter in a bit part in Alexander Korda's Anna Karenina (1948). Higher-profile roles were soon to follow, first as Stanley Holloway's daughter in Ealing's seminal comedy Passport to Pimlico (1949), next as female lead in the crime drama Mystery Junction (1951).
Most of her professional life in the 1950s and 1960s was spent as a star of the stage, acting with the Royal Shakespeare Company and at the West End in classic plays, comedies and thrillers, opposite the likes of Peter O'Toole and John Mills. Having spurned an offer from Rank to renew her contract in 1952, she appeared less often in films, a noted exception being as Dirk Bogarde's romantic interest in Campbell's Kingdom (1957). Her television career, however, blossomed. Aside from guest roles in such varied popular series as Danger Man (1960), Department S (1969), The Rivals of Sherlock Holmes (1971), The Pallisers (1974) and Doctor Who (1963), she made TV history as the glamorous, fur-clad Lady Pamela Wilder in the high-octane boardroom drama The Power Game (1965).
Her last role of note was as the bitchy matriarch of The Bretts (1987), a dynasty of actors in 1920s London. Murray retired from acting in 2001 and lived the last years of her life in Spain.- Actor

Part of the motley crew commandeered by Ernest Borgnine on the popular 1960s TV series McHale's Navy (1962), tall, gangly, beady-eyed, bulb-nosed comic actor Carl Ballantine was better known in other ports as the ultimate "magician". Billed as "The Amazing Ballantine," "The Great Ballantine" and "Ballantine: The World's Greatest Magician" during his long career, Carl made a comedy career out of being inept -- the magician who could never finish a trick or get the trick right in the first place. So successful was he, in fact, that in 2007 actor/magician Steve Martin presented Carl with the Lifetime Achievement Fellowship from the Magic Castle in Hollywood.
The Chicago native was born Meyer Kessler in Chicago on September 27, 1917, and became fascinated by the magic tricks his barber use to show him at a young age. He immediately began studying the art. Deciding to legit as a magician, he gradually realized that his potential as a comic was much better than as a magician so he decided to spoof his magic act -- pulling up laughs instead of rabbits out of a hat. Changing his name to the more agreeable marquee moniker ("Ballantine") in the early 1940s, it took Carl some time to refine his act as a "bad" magician but eventually he found a successful formula. He later went on to perform at such top establishments as the Palace Theatre in New York, as well as a number of Las Vegas niteries (the first "magician" to do so). The act also made its way to the small screen, becoming a popular time-filler on the TV variety circuit during the 1950s and 1960s.
Carl began showing up as an actor in the early 1960s, appearing on such comedy shows as "Car 54, Where Are You?" (recurring role) before hitting the big time with McHale's Navy (1962), which was similarly styled to Phil Silvers' service comedy "Sergeant Bilko". He played crewmen Lester Gruber for four seasons. Carl also was featured in such film comedies as The Shakiest Gun in the West (1968) with Don Knotts, The World's Greatest Lover (1977) with Gene Wilder, Just You and Me, Kid (1979) with George Burns and Mr. Saturday Night (1992) with Billy Crystal. His last film was a bit part in Aimee Semple McPherson (2006) (aka "Sister Aimee"). Carl also was part of the regular cast on the sitcoms The Queen and I (1969) and One in a Million (1980). Every now and then his magician alter ego would reappear on such shows as "Fantasy Island," "Night Court" and "The Cosby Show".
In later years Carl made a strong dent in the cartoon voice-over field and lent his voice to hundreds of regular commercials, including one for the California Raisins. Long married to actress Ceil Cabot, their 45 year marriage ended with her passing on January 27, 2000. They had two daughters, Molly, and actress/voice artist Sara Ballantine. Working practically to the very end, Carl succumbed to age-related problems on November 3, 2009, at age 92.- Writer

Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa got his first big break as an actor when he was cast in Bernardo Bertolucci's The Last Emperor (1987). A US Army brat, he was born in Tokyo and lived in various cities while growing up. His father was in the army, stationed at Ft. Bragg (NC), Ft. Polk (LA) and Ft. Hood (TX). His mother was an actress from Tokyo. The family finally settled in Southern California, where Tagawa began acting in high school. He was an exchange student in Japan while studying at the University of Southern California. He has recently been involved off-screen in addressing student groups (at SFSU and Stanford). He has also been coaching the martial artist portraying Shang Tsung in the Mortal Kombat Live Tour, and in his free time developing his new form of martial arts, called "Chun Shin."- Charlie Lynn Spradling was born and raised in Forth Worth, Texas. Spradling began her show business career acting in plays in and around her home town for nine years after joining a local children's theater group. Charlie eventually left Texas and moved to Hollywood, Los Angeles, California in the mid-1980's. In the wake of getting her SAG card in 1987, Spradling embarked on an acting career in both films and TV shows alike that lasted for about fifteen years. Charlie had co-starring roles in several low-budget horror movies that were made and released by Charles Band's Full Moon Entertainment (Charlie was also a spokes model for Full Moon in the early 1990's). Moreover, Spradling had a rare lead role as troubled stripper Nina in To Sleep with a Vampire (1992). Charlie went into the publishing field after calling it quits as an actress: She helped design and launch the luxury direct mail publication The Arroyo Monthly as well as was a senior executive at Pasadena Magazine. In addition, Spradling also co-founded the salad company Stacked Sally, LLC.
- Christopher Cousins has carved a career by portraying outstanding, diverse characters. This talented, theatrically trained actor has an intriguing, dark and captivating screen presence. The depth and soul that Christopher brings to his characters may have its roots in his birthplace, New York City, or perhaps in the secrets of Oklahoma, where he was raised. Regardless, since his first professional role fresh out of Boston University, Christopher has found within himself the ability to morph into the essence of whatever character he portrays. He perfected his chameleon skills as a contract player on One Life to Live (1968) as Cane Rogan, a con man who pretended to be different people (German film director, Spanish lothario, Irish horse trainer, Arab prince).
Christopher is gaining favorable notices as a quality actor from producers, directors and audiences across the country. In his most recent feature film, Wicker Park (2004), an intense psychological romantic thriller, Christopher is part of an all-star cast including Josh Hartnett, Diane Kruger, Rose Byrne and Matthew Lillard. Christopher stars as Daniel, the provocative and mysterious villain.
Christopher has many diverse roles to his credit: a sophisticated British businessman in For Love of the Game (1999); a dedicated, rural veterinarian in _Long Shot, The (2004)_; an amoral and dangerous hero in Earth vs. the Spider (2001); a clueless father in The Opposite of Sex (1998); a dark, disturbed character in Dead Dog (2001); a loving, grieving father in ER (1994). Recurring credits include Joan of Arcadia (2003); Stargate SG-1 (1997) and American Dreams (2002). Additional starring roles include The O.C. (2003) and The West Wing (1999).
Christopher's dream role is Odysseus, Greek hero of the Trojan War. "I've dreamed of playing Odysseus since I was a boy." His favorite movie is Ran (1985), directed by Akira Kurosawa. Jeff Bridges has inspired him as an actor. Like Bridges, Christopher is selecting quality projects in his own career.
Christopher donates his time to several community organizations, The Carter Center on Hunger Relief and Housing, The Southern Poverty Law Center, Human Rights Watch and Actor's Fund. In his spare time he paints, fences, reads and enjoys doing crosswords. - Actor

Born in Nashville, Tennessee, Claude was the son of a railroad accountant. With no intentions of becoming a screen actor at the time, 12-year-old Claude Jarman, Jr. was discovered during an MGM nationwide talent search for their upcoming film, The Yearling (1946), and won the coveted role of Jody Baxter in Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings' classic story. The critics raved over Claude's tremendously moving debut, and the boy was awarded a miniature Oscar on Academy Awards night.
His family moved to California permanently, and Claude studied at the MGM studio school while being built up as a child star. Sad to say, his film success would not last all that long. He seemed to lack the requisite good looks and natural boyish appeal necessary to forge on ahead. His follow-up films were mediocre, however, including High Barbaree (1947) with Van Johnson, The Sun Comes Up (1949) with Jeanette MacDonald, and Roughshod (1949) starring Robert Sterling. His next best role would be in Intruder in the Dust (1949) with David Brian and Juano Hernandez, but it wasn't enough to sustain his career.
By the early 1950s, MGM was loaning him out to Republic Studios in minor programmers and the now-awkward teen lost ground rapidly. Discouraged, Claude returned to Nashville to complete high school and then attended Vanderbilt University where he took a pre-law course. Following his studies, he served three years in the Navy. By the time he returned to Hollywood in 1959, he found no film work at all but did manage to guest on a few TV shows. He later moved to behind-the-scenes work and made minor strides as a producer and film-festival executive director. He once served as director of Cultural Affairs for the City of San Francisco.- Buxom, beautiful and charismatic brunette stunner Corinne Alphen was born on September 27, 1954 in Lynn, Massachusetts. She's the oldest of five children. Her father William was a Deputy Chief of Police in Lynn, Massachusetts, and her mother Marjorie worked as a secretary in the Commonwealth's Registry of Motor Vehicles. Alphen attended the parochial educational institutions St. John the Evangelist grammar school and Ste. Chrétienne Academy in Salem (she was the president of the drama club in this latter all-girls high school). Corrine moved to Los Angeles, California at age seventeen and studied acting at Santa Monica City College. She made her television debut as a contestant on the local Boston, Massachusetts game-show "Race to Riches." Alphen first gained major public recognition as a Pet of the Month in the June 1978 issue of Penthouse Magazine. Corrine did a follow-up nude pictorial in the August 1981 issue of Penthouse. Alphen was subsequently named the Pet of the Year in 1982; she both graced the cover of and did a nude pictorial in the November 1982 issue of Penthouse Magazine. Corinne went on to act in a handful of movies and TV shows. She gave an especially radiant and delightful performance as fiery rock singer Joan in the amusingly lowbrow teen sex comedy romp Spring Break (1983). Alphen was likewise lively and impressive as the feisty Karen in the cruddy post-nuke sci-fi/action clinker Equalizer 2000 (1987). She made guest appearances on the TV shows The New Mike Hammer (1984), The A-Team (1983), Booker (1989), Mancuso, FBI (1989), and Night Court (1984). Outside of her work in films and TV series, Corrine not only has acted in both TV commercials and in a few stage plays (said plays include portraying Flora in a New York City theater production of Tennessee Williams' "Baby Doll"), but also has worked as a model in numerous magazine print ads. She was married to actor Ken Wahl for several years and had one son Raymond (born 1984) with Wahl prior to their divorce in 1991. Corinne Alphen now works as a certified professional Tarot card reader.

Welsh's books have made him a cult figure within the writing world since the 1990s. Several of his books have become best sellers and all have a mixture of comedy, drama and hard-hitting issues...the best-known being Trainspotting (1996) which was made into a box-office smash worldwide at the movies in 1996. Of his other works, one other has been brought to screen, The Acid House (1998)..a trilogy of stories and though not as successful as Trainspotting commercially, became a cult success in his homeland of Scotland and the UK. At time of writing, Welsh is currently on a project writing the sequel to Trainspotting called 'Porn', which given the success of the first film, should make him even more famous when released as a film within the next year or so.- Actor

One of four children (two older brothers, one younger sister) born to American missionaries, Jayne Meadows (née Jane Cotter) was born September 27, 1919, in China. The family returned to the US in the early 1930s wherein Jayne was forced to learn the English language, speaking Chinese and other foreign languages at the time before learning English. She settled in Sharon, Connecticut with her parents, Rev. Francis James Meadows Cotter (who was appointed rector of the town's Christ Church), and Ida Miller (Taylor) Cotter.
She developed an early interest in acting and studied at the Stella Adler Studio of Acting. She made her Broadway debut with the comedy "Spring Again" (1941), followed by "Another Love Story" (1943), "The Odds on Mrs. Oakley" (1944), "Many Happy Returns" and "Kiss Them for Me" (1945). This led to a post-WWII, MGM contract in which her icy glare and imposing stance frequently made her the perfect manipulating "other woman" in such "B" heavy drama as Undercurrent (1946), Lady in the Lake (1946), Dark Delusion (1947), Enchantment (1948), The Fat Man (1951) and as Michal in the biblical film David and Bathsheba (1951). She occasionally was featured in lighter feature film fare as well, including Song of the Thin Man (1947) and The Luck of the Irish (1948).
Not satisfactorily moving up the credits ladder in films as she hoped, she sought work elsewhere in the early 1950's, especially in the new medium of TV. She became one of Hollywood's more glittery personalities on TV and variety programs, and a sparkling guest panelist on such popular TV game shows as "The Name's the Same, "Masquerade Party, "What's My Line," "To Tell the Truth" and "Password." At one point, she was a regular member of the celebrity panel on I've Got a Secret (1952).
Divorced from film and TV writer Milton Krims after six years, Jayne met her witty match when she married actor/comedian Steve Allen in 1954. They formed an extremely strong personal and professional relationship which would encompass stage ("Love Letters", in which they co-starred on and off for 11 years), film (College Confidential (1960), and especially TV (Meeting of Minds (1977)). Jayne supported Steve as a regular/guest on many of his comedy series ventures, including The Steve Allen Plymouth Show (1956), The New Steve Allen Show (1961), The Steve Allen Playhouse (1962) and The Steve Allen Comedy Hour (1967). They appeared as themselves in the film The Player (1992) they did not appear as themselves in the amusing TV movie Now You See It, Now You Don't (1968) and the all-star TV version of Alice in Wonderland (1985).
Jayne's solo work took a deliberate back seat. Usually playing elegant sophisticates, she cameoed in such films as the ribald comedy Norman... Is That You? (1976); the crime thriller Murder by Numbers (1989); as Billy Crystal's mother in the comedies City Slickers (1991) and City Slickers II: The Legend of Curly's Gold (1994); and made an appearance in what would become her last feature film The Story of Us (1999).
Over a three-decade period, Jayne appeared in a number of TV movies, including James Dean (1976), Sex and the Married Woman (1977), Miss All-American Beauty (1982), A Masterpiece of Murder (1986) and Parent Trap: Hawaiian Honeymoon (1989). She also guested on numerous established programs as well -- "Here Comes the Bride," "Here's Lucy," "Adam-12," "Switch," "Hawaii 5-O," "Matt Houston," "Fantasy Island," "Murder, She Wrote," "The Love Boat," "St. Elsewhere," "The Bold and the Beautiful," "The Nanny" and "Diagnosis Murder." Steady roles on prime-time TV series would include a recurring part as Nurse Chambers on the medical program Medical Center (1969), as well as regular roles on the sitcoms It's Not Easy (1982) and High Society (1995), the latter for which she earned an Emmy nomination for "Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy."
Known for her infectious laugh and joie de vivre, Jayne's confidence grew to include writing stage plays, teleplays, books, and columns. For the most part, however, she was Allen's creative and dedicated business partner for 46 years until his death in 2000. Younger sister Audrey Meadows, of The Honeymooners (1955) TV fame, died in 1996.
Jayne Meadows Allen lived the rest of her life quietly, occasionally granting interviews, until her death on April 26, 2015 in Los Angeles, aged 95.- Actor

Jovanotti, pseudonym of Lorenzo Cherubini (Rome, 27 September 1966), is an Italian singer-songwriter, rapper and disc jockey.
It became famous in the late eighties, launched by Claudio Cecchetto. Jovanotti soon departs from the hip hop mix of the first hits, gradually approaching the model of world music (always interpreted in a hip hop and funky key). The musical evolution corresponds to a change in the texts of his songs, which, over the years, tends to touch more and more personal themes, more typical of the Italian songwriting style, returning to combine hip-hop, funky and songwriting in a style of its own. .
At the same time, his social and political commitment is also increasing. Active pacifist, he has frequently collaborated with associations such as Emergency Amnesty International, Anti-vivisection League, Nigrizia and DATA, he contributed to the demonstrations in favor of debt cancellation in the nineties [6] and following the No excuses and Make Poverty History, participating in Live 8- Actress

Leonard Barr was a comic and eccentric dancer who was famous for truly being Dean Martin's uncle, as he was the brother of Dino's mother, Angela Crocetti (née Barra). They were Italians of mixed Neapolitan and Sicilian ancestry.
Born Leonard Barra on September 27, 1903 in West Virginia, he became a stand-up comic who delivered one-liners dead-pan, in the style of Henny Youngman. He first appeared on TV in 1950 as a comic dancer, thanks to his nephew Dino, when Martin was hosting the The Colgate Comedy Hour (1950), with his then-partner Jerry Lewis.
Barr didn't appear again, until 1964, when he next appeared as a comic dancer, this time on The Hollywood Palace (1964).
He continued to appear on TV, sporadically during the 1960s until his career as a TV comic and an actor took off starting in 1970. He appeared in the hit film, Diamonds Are Forever (1971), (which was Sean Connery's return to the role of Bond) as 'Shady Tree', and then appearing in the Oscar-winning film, The Sting (1973) - both times as a comic. Spunky actress, singer and comedienne all rolled up into one, Puerto Rican-American Liz Torres was born on September 27, 1947, a native of the Bronx. She began her stand-up/singing career as a regular performing in various small NYC niteries. It wasn't until she received an invite to appear on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson (1962) that her comic career started blooming on TV and in film.
Liz has been a broadly familiar ethnic face on the sitcom circuit, having had regular or recurring parts in numerous series. In addition to regular roles on 70s TV variety shows for Melba Moore, Clifton Davis and Ben Vereen, she replaced the late Barbara Colby in the Mary Tyler Moore spinoff Phyllis (1975) starring Cloris Leachman following Colby's tragic murder. A year later she joined the All in the Family (1971) cast for a season. Liz co-starred in a number of short-lived series such as Checking In (1981), The New Odd Couple (1982) and City (1990) before hitting paydirt and scoring multiple Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for her prime role of Mahalia on The John Larroquette Show (1993). She has continued to make the guest rounds on such popular series as Ally McBeal (1997), The Nanny (1993), Quantum Leap (1989), The Wonder Years (1988) and L.A. Law (1986), often providing some necessary comedy relief amid the drama, and she is a veteran of many mini-movies, both comedic and dramatic.
On Broadway, Torres replaced Tony-winning Rita Moreno as men's bathhouse entertainer Googie Gomez in the wacky comedy "The Ritz" and portrayed the bizarre character of Bunny in "House of Blue Leaves." The musical part of her has recorded for RCA and appeared in a number of stage roles that have ranged from Aldonza/Dulcinea in "Man of La Mancha" to lightweight roles in "Bye Bye Birdie" and "See Saw."
She has provided amusing vignettes in such film comedies as The Odd Couple II (1998) starring the late Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau, Sunset (1988) with Bruce Willis and Permanent Midnight (1998) showcasing Ben Stiller. She was nominated for her the
Although comedy has been Liz's primary career outlet, her millennium film credits have leaned toward heavier material with featured parts in the romantic drama Gabriela (2001), the urban drama King Rikki (2002), the social drama Taylor (2005) and the dramedy West of Brooklyn (2008). Outside the recurring roles on the law series First Monday (2002) and the Latino family drama American Family (2002), TV has proven a different story where she is best remembered for her series role as "Miss Patty" in the long-running sitcom Gilmore Girls (2000), and made numerous amusing appearances on such regular comedies as "The Fighting Fitzgeralds," "The Brothers Garcia," "Ugly Betty," "Desperate Housewives," "Devious Maids" and the Cuban-American sitcom "One Day at a Time."

Meat Loaf was born Marvin Lee Aday in Dallas, Texas, to Wilma Artie (Hukel), a teacher and gospel singer, and Orvis Wesley Aday, a police officer. He moved to Los Angeles in 1967 to play in local bands. In 1970, he moved to New York and appeared in the Broadway musicals "Hair", "Rockabye Hamlet" and "The Rocky Horror Show," and Off Broadway in "Rainbow", "More Than You Deserve", "National Lampoon Show" and the New York Shakespeare Festival's production of "As You Like it;" as well as other productions at the famed New York Public Theatre. He made his film debut with a memorable role in the cult film The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975).
In 1977, he and lyricist Jim Steinman released an operatic rock album called "Bat Out Of Hell"; the record was huge and has sold 50,000,000 copies worldwide and is tied with AC/DC for the 2nd best selling record of all time. The tour and promoting the album took a toll on Meat Loaf's voice and left him unable to sing for 2 years, but with months of rehabilitation, he was able to get back in the studio and record the album "Dead Ringer". Meat Loaf stayed in the dark through the 1980s in the US, recording 4 records which got very little airplay or high chart positions in the US but continued to have major chart success in Europe and Australia. The 1981 Single "Dead Ringer for Love", a duet with Cher, was a top 10 single in many countries outside the US, but which American radio refused to play.
Meat Loaf had many film and TV roles, including the lead character Travis Redfish in Roadie (1980); a pilot in Out of Bounds (1986); in The Squeeze (1987) with Michael Keaton; and Fred in Focus (2001) (based on the Arthur Miller book by the same name), with Laura Dern and William H. Macy. When Meat Loaf and Steinman got back together in 1993, they delivered a powerful sequel, "Bat Out Of Hell II", which went to #1 in the US and UK and 26 other countries. Bat II sold over 22,000,000 copies.
He appeared in many films, including Crazy in Alabama (1999), Formula 51 (2001) (with Samuel L. Jackson), and Fight Club (1999) (with Brad Pitt). TV credits included guest starring roles as a soldier being held prisoner in Vietnam in Lightning Force (1991), a newspaper reporter in the hit series Glee (2009), a slick landlord of a restaurant who ends up on the menu in HBO series Tales from the Crypt (1989) a blacksmith on Showtime's Dead Man's Gun (1997), as fur trader Jake in Masters of Horror (2005) episode Pelts (2006), in House (2004) as caring husband Eddie, and, most recently, in the supporting role of Doug in the SYFY series Ghost Wars (2017). Hugh Laurie (star of "House") played piano on the song "If I Can't Have You" on Meat Loaf's album "Hang Cool Teddy Bear", which was produced by award-winning music producer Rob Cavallo. (Jack Black also sang on the album.)

Miklos Jancsó was born in 1921 in Vac, Hungary. His mother Angela Poparada was Romanian and his father Sandor Jancsó Hungarian. Jancsó received a degree in Law from the University of Cluj-Napoca in 1944. After fighting in WWII and a brief period as a POW, he chose to join the Film and Theater Academy in Budapest, and graduated with a diploma in Film Directing in 1950. His fifth feature film The Round-Up (1966) was a huge hit domestically and internationally and is often considered a significant work of world cinema. Hungarian film critic Zoltan Fabri called it "perhaps the best Hungarian film ever made." Film critic Derek Malcolm included the film in his list of the 100 greatest films ever made. In Hungary, it was seen by over a million people (in a country with a population of 10 million). His next film The Red and the White (1967) became Jancsó's biggest success internationally. It won for example the 'Best Foreign Film' award from the French Syndicate of Cinema Critics. In his following films he developed a personal style of historical analysis using complex camera movements, dance and popular songs, creating his own cinematic style he called "political musical". The long takes became a trademark of Jancsó, so for example the 80-minute long Winter Wind (1969) consists of only 12 shots. Jancsó received the 'Best Director' award at the Cannes Film Festival 1972 for the film Red Psalm (1972). During the 1970s, Jancsó divided his time between Italy and Hungary and made a number of films in Italy, the best known of which is Private Vices, Public Virtues (1976). At that time, his films Hungarian Rhapsody (1979) and Allegro barbaro (1979) were the most expensive to have been produced in Hungary, but the critical reaction was muted. Jancsó was awarded the Career Golden Lion at the Venice Film festival in 1990. After little success and a long break Jancsó returned with The Lord's Lantern in Budapest (1998), which proved to a be a surprising comeback for the director. This success led to a succession of 5 more Pepe (Zoltán Mucsi) and Kapa (Péter Scherer) films, the last in 2006. Jancsó also cemented his reputation by making appearances in a number of films, for example as himself in his Pepe and Kapa films and in guest roles in works by up-and-coming Hungarian directors. Jancsó died of lung cancer on 31 January 2014, aged 92. Fellow Hungarian director Béla Tarr called Jancsó "the greatest Hungarian film director of all time" and acknowledged Jancsó's influence on his own work.- Mónica Puig was born on 27 September 1993 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Phil Tippett is the founder and namesake of Tippett Studio. His varied career in visual effects has spanned more than 30 years and includes two Academy Awards; and six nominations, one BAFTA award and four nominations, two Emmys and the advent of modern digital effects in motion pictures.
As a child of seven, Phil was profoundly inspired by Ray Harryhausen's stop-motion classic, The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad and Willis O'Brien's classic character King Kong. His subsequent devotion to the creation of the fantastic creatures in film has become his raison d'etre. As a kid, and then as a student always drawing, sculpting and making animations, he developed his skills in a broader context first with a Fine Arts degree from University of California at Irvine, then as an animator at the commercial house, Cascade Pictures in Los Angeles. As a young adult Phil sought out teachers and mentors establishing connections and friendships with Ray Harryhausen and Ray Bradbury.
A huge turning point came in 1975 when George Lucas hired Phil and Jon Berg to create a stop motion miniature chess scene for Star Wars: A New Hope. Phil also had a hand in many other aspects of the Star Wars films, including modeling and casting alien heads and limbs for the busy Cantina scene in the first film. By 1978 Phil lead the animation team at Industrial Light and Magic that would launch his career bringing life to the sinister Imperial Walkers and the alien hybrid Tauntaun for The Empire Strikes Back.
In 1982, building upon insights from 'Empire', the same ILM team developed a stop-motion process that they comically christened as 'Go Motion' that produced a startlingly realistic beast for Dragonslayer and won Phil an Academy Award; nomination. And in 1983, as head of the ILM creature shop, he began work on Return of the Jedi, designing Jabba The Hut and the Rancor Pit Monster as well as animating the two legged Walker and later winning the Oscar; for Best Visual Effects.
In 1984 Phil left ILM to create a 10-minute short film, Prehistoric Beast. The newly formed Tippett Studio, then operating out of Phil's garage, drew upon Phil's wealth of experience with stop motion and his expertise in anatomical modeling and rigging. He and Tippett Studio went on to create top-notch stop motion animations for various television and film projects including Dinosaur!, Willow, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, and the Robocop trilogy.
In 1991, Steven Spielberg, learning of Phil's expertise in dinosaur movement and behavior, selected him to supervise the dinosaur animation for Jurassic Park. When Phil learned of the choice to go with the computer generated dinosaurs, instead of stop motion, his initial reaction was, "I think I'm extinct!" It was this project that was responsible for Tippett Studio's transition from stop-motion to computer generated animation and for which Phil was awarded his second Oscar®.
Phil's next major challenge came in 1995 when Paul Verhoeven, again with producer Jon Davison, asked Tippett Studio to create the swarms of deadly arachnids for the sci-fi extravaganza, Starship Troopers. Leading a team of 150 computer artists and technicians, earned Phil a sixth Academy Award; nomination in 1997. Starship Troopers firmly planted Tippett Studio (and Phil) into the digital age of filmmaking.
In the following years Phil has been a guide and mentor for the Tippett Studio VFX supervisors and crew as they create monsters, aliens and appealing creatures for the numerous films that wind their way through the Tippett pipeline.
Partnering with associate, writer Ed Neumeier (Starship Troopers and Robocop scribe), the two created the story for Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation, which Phil went on to direct in 2004 for Screengems.
Recently, Phil oversaw the design and creation of the wolf pack in Summit Entertainment's New Moon and Eclipse, the second and third film installments based on the Twilight series of novels by Stephanie Meyer.
Phil's roots in stop motion, modeling and practical effects and his ability to use this foundation in conjunction with developing technologies has made him one of a handful of artists whose careers have spanned the transition of visual effects from largely practical to digital. In this way he is a great teacher and mentor to the crew passing on the tradition of mentorship given to him in the early part of his career.- Music Department
