Favourite sitcoms (British and US)
Instead of doing two separate lists, I thought I'd mash together both British and American sitcoms. Mostly because there aren't a lot of US sitcoms that I enjoy.

Better than "The Big Bang Theory", better than "How I Met Your Mother", definitely better than "Friends". (I don't find "Friends" funny. Shots are now fired.)
It's not entirely odd to say that a television show or a movie can be special to us. "Frasier" is special to me. A year before he died, my Grandpa introduced me to it. And I instantly thought it was hilarious.
I've seen almost every episode at least dozens of times. It's repeated in the mornings on Channel 4. But I still get a laugh from the episodes.
It's one of those sitcoms that has that balance though: It can be very funny, but it can also have its serious moments, and it can be quite emotional. The line that always gets me is the final words of Niles in the finale: "I'll miss the coffees."
So yes. Great performances, memorable characters, good writing, even if it kind of lost its way part way through, but then managed to pick itself back up.
It's just an excellent show. - CreatorJames L. BrooksMatt GroeningSam SimonStarsDan CastellanetaNancy CartwrightHarry ShearerThe satiric half-hour adventures of a working-class family in the misfit city of Springfield. It might be animated, but it's still a sitcom.
Now, I want to establish that I'm adding this to the list because of the first 9 seasons of the programme. They were the best of the series, and then after that... it becomes hit and miss. Sometimes, there is an episode or two that stand out in the later seasons.
But if you truly want comedy gold, stick with the first nine seasons. - StarsRowan AtkinsonTony RobinsonStephen FryStuck in the middle of World War I, Captain Edmund Blackadder does his best to escape the banality of the war.Of the four series of "Blackadder", this one is the best. Even more so than "Blackadder II", which is second best.
It's laugh-out-loud funny, the characters are loveable and memorable. The premise of it being set in WW1 is also great, and yet is also handled quite respectfully well.
It also has the best episode of the entire "Blackadder" series, "Goodbyeee", which as the name suggests is the finale. A perfect ending to a brilliant television show. But I can never watch it. It's just too emotional. I have to stop the DVD before it plays the episode anytime I watch the series. - StarsRonnie BarkerBrian WildeFulton MackayThe prison life of Fletcher, a criminal serving a five-year sentence, as he strives to bide his time, keep his record clean, and refuses to be ground down by the prison system.

It also shares similar aspects with "The Simpsons" asides from the fact that it's animated, and that Peter Griffin is just a poor man's Homer Simpson :P
No, the similarity is that... the earlier seasons are good, and the later ones are hit and miss. There are still some stand out episodes, but it's just beginning to get tiring, especially since it's been relying on non-stop offensive humour these days.
It's controversial, but it's funny. Most of the time :P
