- DirectorBenjamin RossStarsHugh O'ConorAntony SherTobias ArnoldThis film is based on a true story about a British teenager who allegedly poisoned family, friends, and co-workers. Graham is highly intelligent, but completely amoral. He becomes interested in science, especially chemistry, and begins to read avidly. Something of a social misfit, he is fascinated by morbid subjects such as poisons and murder. His family environment is intolerable to him and, in particular, his stepmother torments him. He decides to poison those who annoy him, first with antimony and later with thallium. He smugly thinks himself cleverer than all those around him, but nevertheless he is caught and sentenced to 'rehabilitation' at a psychiatric institution. Once there, he undertakes to deceive the new eminent psychiatrist sent there to 'cure' him, thereby securing his release.
- DirectorTed FayeStarsDawn AldenOto BrezinaJack E. CurentonThis documentary looks at two journeys; the first being a group of pioneers who set out from the settlement at Salt Lake, Utah in 1849 on their way to California. They were a mix of gold-seekers, Mormon missionaries, and those simply looking for a better life. Some of them made the unwise choice to take a "shortcut" through a place they subsequently named Death Valley. They escaped with just the clothes on their back, leaving behind a trail of animal bones, wagon remains and all their earthly possessions. In December of 1998, a small group of Death Valley enthusiasts decided to retrace the route of those lost pioneers. In a cave along the trail they made an unexpected discovery: a trunk containing valuables and a letter seemingly signed by one of the 1849 pioneers. For days, national and international media were drawn to this Death Valley discovery, but then doubt began to grow about the authenticity of the trunk. Not to mention the fact that it was removed illegally from National Park lands! Filmmaker Ted Faye's documentary recreates interviews with the survivors of the 1849 pioneers in their own words from their journals and memoirs, as well as interviewing the man who filmed the trunk discovery and the skeptical historians who now doubt its authenticity. The viewer is left to decide by him or herself if the trunk is indeed "bunk," or a legitimate artifact now languishing in storage.
- DirectorFrank HurleyPhillip Garth LawStarsFrank HurleyJohn WestOne of Australia's most famous photographers and explorers, Frank Hurley, presents this absorbing film on the history of Australia's first expeditions to the Antarctic continent between 1911 and 1954. In the summer of 1911, a group of pioneers set off from Hobart on the tall ship Aurora to an unknown land. Their send-off was captured by Hurley in remarkable, archival footage. Buffeted by blizzards, and with the ever-present threat of crevasses, they made Cape Dennison in Commonwealth Bay their base for one year. Hurley describes his subsequent expeditions to the region with Shackleton, Wilkins and Campbell. Campbell's expedition in 1947 saw the establishment of scientific stations at Heard and Macquarie Islands. In 1954, Hurley joined the expedition led by Phillip Law on the Danish ice-breaker, the Kista Dan. Hurley's original footage shows the ship edging its way across the pack ice to the safety of the harbour where the first permanent Australian post in the Antarctic, Mawson Station was established. A rare film which reveals the true hardship and courage of these early pioneers.
- DirectorFred J. BalshoferA party of pioneers decide upon a site for their new home and unpack their belongings. Some months later they are visited by an Indian chief and two of his companions. The pioneer sits in friendly confab with the Indian until he learns his errand. The chief has come to propose for the hand of the pioneer's daughter. This proposition is listened to with horror and the Indian's gift refused. The other settlers are called and they all drive the intruders away. The Indians resent the repulse and a reward is offered for the capture of the white girl. At a time when the men folks leave the settlement to go for provisions the Indians steal upon the women, overcome their guard and, after burning the cabin, make the girl captive. The settlers reach their home in time to save the women and learn of the disaster and all start in pursuit. They are led through hazardous passes but are successful in fighting down most of the Indians. The one bearing the girl, however, reaches the summit of a steep rock and threatens to end her life if the followers come nearer. He is captured from the rear and the girl restored to her father.
