Born in Haifa in 1950, as the second son of architect Munio Weinraub and former Sionist activist Efratia Margalit. On the year of his birth, his parents changed the family name to "Gitai", which is the Hebrew translation of the German name "Weinraub". While he was a student in architecture, Amos Gitai joined the Yom Kippur war in 1973 as a reserve duty officer, and served as part of a helicopter rescue team. While serving during the war, he started filming with a 8mm camera his mother gave him as his birthday present. On his 23rd birthday, October 11th 1973, his helicopter was shot down by a Syrian missile. Among the 7 crews on board, 6 of them survived, including Gitai himself, who was inspired by this traumatic experience to quit architecture and move to filmmaking. He made a documentary on this incident and his fellow survivors, "Kippur: War Memories" in 1993, then a fictional recreation of it "Kippur" in 2000.
in 1979, Gitai directed his first feature-length documentary "House", commissioned by Israel's public television. The television rejected the film, and the film (originally shot in 16mm) only exists today copied from a VHS tape he managed to secure. The tape traveled on few international festivals and quickly earned a reputation for him. His third documentary, "Field Diary" shot in 1983 was also rejected by the Israeli Television who originally commissioned it. This time, Gitai moved to France with the negative of the film and completed it in France. For the next 10 years, he based himself in Europe.
1n 1986, he directed his first feature fictional film "Esther", based on the Biblical story of the book of Esther.
In 1993, following prime minister Ytzhak Rabin starting the peace process with Palestine, Gitai and his family moved back to live in his native town of Haifa.- Writer

Born in Beershaba in 1964, Ronit was an awkward child who felt she was different from others, but when she became an actress (more or less by chance at the age of 26) with a star role in Daniel Wachsmann's 'Hameyu'ad' ['The Appointed (1990)'], this complex became an asset. This beautiful brunette realized she could relate to the rest of the world by expressing her inner emotions. Since then she has made few films, but many of major importance such as Late Marriage (2001) (by Dover Koshashvili), Alila (2003) (by Amos Gitai and Or (My Treasure) (2004) (by Keren Yedaya), in which she embodies wives, prostitutes or dope fiends marked by life. She has even co-scripted and co-directed the excellent 'Ve'lakahta Lekha Isha' ['To Take a Wife (2004)'] with her brother Schlomi. Both are preparing the second part due to be filmed in 2008, 'Seven Days' [Shiva (2008)]. She was wonderful in the recent The Band's Visit (2007) ('The Band's Visit') as a kind-hearted lonely heart refusing to wilt in her desert town.- Writer

His father was the director of a bank. After graduating from high school, Hoffmann began studying art history and sculpture in Budapest. During the Nazi occupation of Hungary he was deported to Poland. From there he managed to escape and return to his homeland in an adventurous way before the end of the war in 1945. In 1949 he fled again, this time from Hungary to Israel. There he initially lived in a kibbutz, where he became familiar with the new language and developed his first literary activities, some of which already appeared in the daily press. Following the kibbutz experience, Kishon moved to Tel Aviv, where he continued writing and running a cabaret.
Kishon moved to Switzerland in the spring of 1981, where he lived for a short time in the canton of Appenzell and wrote his autobiography there. The writer's work consists primarily of satires that have been translated worldwide and have found an audience of millions in Germany since the beginning of the 1960s. His satirical plays "Der Blaumilchkanal" (1974) and "Es war die Lerche" (1977) were outstanding. Kishon also wrote the scripts for popular radio and television plays and occasionally directed them. In 1992, the German premiere of his comedy "Kein Wort zu Morgenstern" took place in St. Pölten under his direction. He also wrote and directed the comedy series "Sarah and Ephraim - Kishon's best family stories", which was shown on the private broadcaster Super-RTL in 1998. Kishon's other films included "Ervinka" and "Sleep Well, Sergeant".
There are also numerous film adaptations of the satirist's literary works. In political terms, Kishon repeatedly spoke out against anti-Israel campaigns and also against communism, which he took issue with in 1990 in "Ingratitude is the World's Wages". In 1997, his satirical novel "My Comb" conquered the international bestseller lists. After Kishon's second wife Sara Lipovitz died in 2002, he married the Austrian Lisa Witasek a year later for his third marriage. The writer had three children from his marriage to Sara. Kishon's literary life's work consisted of over 50 books that were translated into 37 languages. The worldwide circulation of his writings has already reached 43 million copies, with the German-language editions taking a top spot at 32 million.
The "Family Stories" are now considered the best-selling Hebrew book in the world - next to the Bible. Kishon was honored with numerous prizes such as the Order Against Animal Seriousness (1978), the Nobel Prize for Humor (1981) and the Karl Valentin Order (1984). In 1985 he received the Golden Camera. He went on to win three Golden Globes. A collection of political satires followed under the title Whoever believes it will be blessed (2000). In 2002, the State of Israel honored the writer with the Israel Prize, the country's highest honor, for his life's work. In the summer of 2004, on the occasion of Kishon's 80th birthday, the German publisher Langen Müller published the anniversary edition "All Novels", which includes Kishon's prose works.

Avi Nesher's award-winning films have played a major part in Israeli cinema's rise to prominence during the last decade. During that period, remarkably enough, four Israeli movies were nominated for Best Foreign Picture. During that era, Nesher was singled out and honored several times as one of Israel's all-time greatest filmmakers.
In 2018 Avi Nesher won a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Israeli Ministry of Culture and Sports.
Also in 2018 Nesher released The Other Story. The film premiered at the 2018 Toronto Film Festival "The Other Story", which is based on a true story and was written by Nesher and his co-writer and known psychologist Noam Shpancer, was the most viewed Israeli film of 2018 and granted Nesher the Best Director Award from The Israeli Film Critic Association.
In 2016, Nesher wrote, directed and produced the post-war family drama "Past Life", which is set in Israel's revolutionary year of 1977 and is based on true events (inspired by Dr. Baruch Milch's autobiography "Can Heaven Be Void?")."Past Life" was an official selection at Toronto International Film Festival 16' ("Profoundly moving, suspenseful, gripping character-driven drama with hauntingly beautiful music" - Variety), and also the closing night at the Haifa International Film Festival ("An explosion of sheer emotional and cinematic virtuosity" - Cinemascope). In its long theatrical run in Israel, "Past Life" was a resounding success, receiving excellent reviews and close to 200,000 spectators. It was nominated for 5 Ophir Awards (the Israeli Oscars) including Best Actress and Original Score. Internationally the film was bought and distributed by the Samuel Goldwyn Company and by MGM/Orion.
In 2013, Nesher's film The Wonders was praised by film critic Yair Raveh (Cinemascope) who called it the best Israeli movie of the year. It premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and was selected as one of five exceptional films featured in the Contemporary World Speakers program. Variety film critic Alissa Simon hailed it a "smart, stylish, and sophisticated dramedy."
In 2008, Nesher received the Outstanding Achievement Award at the Jerusalem Film Festival. In 2009, he received the Cinematic Excellence Award at the Haifa Film Festival and a star on the Avenue of the Stars, an honor rarely bestowed on directors. In 2010 Nesher received the prestigious Landau Award for Excellence in the Arts.
That year, Nesher's "The Matchmaker", which premiered as an official selection at the Toronto Film Festival and later on that year won the Silver Plaque at the Chicago International Film Festival. "The Matchmaker" was nominated for nine Israeli Academy Awards (including Best Picture) and won three, including Best Actor and Best Actress. It will open in U.S. theaters later this fall.
In 2007, Nesher's "The Secrets" also premiered as an official selection at the Toronto Film Festival. It was hailed by the Hollywood Reporter as "...witty and wise, sensual and emotionally overpowering - one of the best Israeli movies in recent years". Legendary movie critic Andrew Sarris declared "The Matchmaker" "One of the most remarkable movies of the year". It was nominated for seven Israeli Academy Awards, and won two.
In 2005, Nesher directed the highly experimental political documentary "Oriental", which won the Spirit of Freedom Award at the Jerusalem Film Festival. "Brilliant and original" raved the Jerusalem Post. "Avi Nesher is clearly Israel's most innovative filmmaker".
In 2004, Nesher wrote and directed "Turn Left at the End of the World", -- a surreal deconstruction of Israel's immigration mythology. "Turn Left" became Israel's biggest box office success, as well as becoming one of the best-reviewed films of the era. It was nominated for eight Israeli Academy Awards and won three.
Nesher's earlier credits also include many films of note. His very first film, "The Troupe" was a controversial hit that shocked the Israeli establishment by ridiculing the IDF; it has gone on to become an Israeli cult classic and most recently was adapted as a very successful stage play by the Israeli National Theater.
Following his auspicious debut, Nesher wrote and directed "Rage and Glory", which tells the controversial story of a Jewish terror organization during the 1940s. "Rage and Glory" caused a political storm, was lauded by international critics, and in 2001 was selected by the Lincoln Center Film Society as one of the most important films in 50 years of Israeli cinema.
After seeing "Rage and Glory", producer Dino De Laurentis convinced Nesher to come to Hollywood. Consequently, Nesher wrote and directed the sci-fi mystery "Timebomb" for MGM (produced by Rafaella De Laurentiis) and the sensual, supernatural mystery "Doppelganger" for 20th Century Fox, starring Drew Barrymore, both of which won prizes at the Avoriaz Science Fiction and Fantasy Festival.
Nesher's American success allowed him to produce, write, and direct the independent feature "The Taxman" which opened to extraordinary reviews: The New York Times called it "A delight...a charmer of a mystery" and Jeffrey Lyons of NBC hailed it as "A cinematic gem...not to be missed!"- Writer
