- DirectorTomas AlfredsonStarsKåre HedebrantLina LeanderssonPer RagnarOskar, an overlooked and bullied boy, finds love and revenge through Eli, a beautiful but peculiar girl. This is the original Swedish version of this already perfect film. Simply one of the best movies ever made, I find it absurd that Hollywood felt the need to remake a far subpar version for American audiences. The children in this film are actually believable, unlike most American child actors... If you haven't seen the original, then do yourself a favor and watch it asap.
- DirectorTom TykwerStarsBen WhishawDustin HoffmanAlan RickmanJean-Baptiste Grenouille, born with a superior olfactory sense, creates the world's finest perfume. His work, however, takes a dark turn as he searches for the ultimate scent. If it were up to me, I would not classify this movie as a horror movie at all. But it seems to be listed as such on every movie website, so I'll acquiesce. I see it more as a drama, but I'll agree it is disturbing. What a beautiful movie. This is simply one of the best movies ever made in any genre in my opinion. Acting, cinematography, plot, dialogue. Ben Whishaw, Alan Rickman, and Dustin Hoffman are the perfect crew to pilot this perfect script.
- DirectorMary HarronStarsChristian BaleJustin TherouxJosh LucasA wealthy New York City investment banking executive, Patrick Bateman, hides his alternate psychopathic ego from his co-workers and friends as he delves deeper into his violent, hedonistic fantasies.Whether this should actually be classified under horror has always been somewhat controversial, but regardless - I love this film. Christian Bale's best performance, arguably. Great adaptation (and improvement) upon the original novel. Disturbing, confusing, ambiguous, 80's witty, and completely satisfying.
- DirectorStanley KubrickStarsJack NicholsonShelley DuvallDanny LloydA family heads to an isolated hotel for the winter where a sinister presence influences the father into violence, while his psychic son sees horrific forebodings from both past and future.Kubrick is one of my all-time favorite directors and this is one of his very best films. The cast is absolutely incredible, from Duvall to Nicholson to Scrothers to the little boy.... all brilliant performances. Eerie, wonderfully slow build, perfect climax. Many rate this movie as the best horror movie ever. Understandably.
- DirectorJonathan DemmeStarsJodie FosterAnthony HopkinsScott GlennA young F.B.I. cadet must receive the help of an incarcerated and manipulative cannibal killer to help catch another serial killer, a madman who skins his victims.Prompting thousands of movie lovers mimicking lines for decades.... "oh wait.... is she a big fat person"
"I ate his live with some fava beans and a nice chianti"
"I can smell..." etc....
Aside from that, what a tremendous movie. Some of the creepiest ultimate-darkness scenes ever. Raised the bar very high for movie murderers to come after. - DirectorAdrian LyneStarsTim RobbinsElizabeth PeñaDanny AielloMourning his dead child, a haunted Vietnam War veteran attempts to uncover his past while suffering from a severe case of dissociation. To do so, he must decipher reality and life from his own dreams, delusions, and perceptions of death. An incredibly well-done anti-chemical warfare movie with Tim Robbins and Danny Aiello. Still aged reasonably well after 20+ years, it is a shining example of how a great horror movie can be eerie, creepy, and downright disturbing without the gratuitous use of special effect or CGI. Your own mind creates far more disturbing imagery than the director can muster. The trick is creating the perfect ambiance. That's what this movie does.
- DirectorDanny BoyleStarsCillian MurphyNaomie HarrisChristopher EcclestonFour weeks after a mysterious, incurable virus spreads throughout the UK, a handful of survivors try to find sanctuary.Arguably the best zombie movie ever made. Now that hordes and hordes of copied zombie movies, TV Series, etc... are being churned out - the movie still stands out as my favorite. The others still haven't achieved the same sense of dread and isolation that this movie created. It stands alone.
- DirectorJohn LandisStarsDavid NaughtonJenny AgutterJoe BelcherTwo American college students on a walking tour of Britain are attacked by a werewolf that none of the locals will admit exists.I love this movie. Partly probably because I am a child of the 80's, and partly because the combination of disturbing scenarios with humor haven't been paralleled since. Plus, how many horror movies have Frank Oz of the muppets in them? Rick Baker was the cream of the crop of special effects at the time, and it's still some great work even today. Probably the only werewolf movie I would even consider adding to this list. Most are horrible.
- DirectorDon CoscarelliStarsBruce CampbellOssie DavisBob IvyWhen residents of their nursing home start dying of dubious causes, an aged Elvis and an African-American senior who claims to be President John F. Kennedy discover that the perpetrator is an Egyptian mummy with murderous intentions. You are one of two types of people. You either love Bruce Campbell or you don't really care about him. Although the Evil Dead series was terrific - Bubba Ho-Tep will always reign supreme in my favorites of the Bruce Campbell horror films. Humor, Aussie Davis, Bruce Campbell as an aging Elvis Presley, a hillbilly zombie Egyptian Pharoah, what else could you ask for in a humor-horror film?
- DirectorDrew GoddardStarsKristen ConnollyChris HemsworthAnna HutchisonFive college friends head out to a remote cabin for a getaway, but things don't go as planned when they start getting killed. They soon discover that there is more to the cabin than it seems. This was a tough one for me. I generally abhor movies made for the teenage crowd and I also generally abhor movies that star teenagers (or aging actors pretending to be teenagers). However, this one is different. It's a tongue-in-cheek look at horrible teen horror flicks with a pretty brilliant twist. It's got a lot of black humor for those who hate the standard slasher movies (of which you'll find none on this list). Nice work indeed.
- DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsRobert De NiroNick NolteJessica LangeA convicted rapist, released from prison after serving a fourteen-year sentence, stalks the family of the lawyer who originally defended him. Here's another movie that sort of dangles between genres, but generally you can find it under 'horror'. Although the original movie is terrific, I find that this remake is absolutely incredible. Mostly due to De Niro and Nolte's performances, this movie is one of the best stalker movies ever. The suspense mounts throughout, always keeping you on the edge of your seat.
- DirectorStuart GordonStarsEzra GoddenFrancisco RabalRaquel MeroñoA boating accident runs a young man and woman ashore in a decrepit Spanish fishing town which they discover is in the grips of an ancient sea god and its monstrous half human offspring. It's hard for me to have a 'best of' horror list without adding at least one H.P. Lovecraft adaptation. Well, Dagon was directing by Lovecraft afficianado Stuart Gordon. Having made a handful of Lovecraft films, this one is his best (so far!). Ezra Godden makes an incredible nerdy lead role and fits the Lovecraft element perfectly. One of my favorite aspects of this film is actress Macarena Gomez, creating the most bizarre combination of grotesqueness and beauty that can be imagined. It maintains a campy B-Movie vibe throughout, fully aware if its absurdity. I loved it.
- DirectorDavid LynchStarsJack NanceCharlotte StewartAllen JosephHenry Spencer tries to survive his industrial environment, his angry girlfriend, and the unbearable screams of his newly born mutant child. For me, David Lynch is not perfect. He makes a fair amount of nonsense, in my opinion. I'm not always a fan of his stream-of-consciousness approach to script writing and often making a movie without a script at all.... But this one. This one is different. This movie was brilliant. I am a huge fan of the art of creating an incredibly disturbing atmosphere slowly, deliberately building the dread. This movie accomplishes that in spades. Wonderful example of atmospheric hopelessness.
- DirectorJohn CarpenterStarsKurt RussellWilford BrimleyKeith DavidA research team in Antarctica is hunted by a shape-shifting alien that assumes the appearance of its victims. Why Hollywood constantly feels the need to remake great classics with new horrible renditions is beyond me.... John Carpenter's original movie The Thing is a building mass of terrific terror. The special effects of the time are still perfectly good even to today's standards. Grotesque it is; however, that doesn't diminish the wonderful plot and its ability to bring you along this slow ride to insanity and isolation. Kurt Russell and Wilford Brimley are both great in this as well.
- DirectorWilliam Peter BlattyStarsGeorge C. ScottEd FlandersBrad DourifA police lieutenant uncovers more than he bargained for as his investigation of a series of murders, which have all the hallmarks of the deceased Gemini serial killer, leads him to question the patients of a psychiatric ward.I know this one will confuse some folks. The first Exorcist, sure it was a classic. It's good. It didn't age very well over the years, but sure - it's a classic and will remain so. Then the second Exorcist was obviously horrible. Most people forgot it existed right after release. Then. THEN! Original director Blatty retook the directing role and released Exorcist 3, with powerhouse George C. Scott and horror superstar Brad Dourif. Dialogue has been the wicked crux of horror movies throughout the decades and usually is the worst dialogue ever written. Well this movie changes that. Both the mentioned actors provide some of the absolutely best monologues ever spoken in a horror movie. Wonderful dialogue! Wonderfully creepy movie that indeed stands up to the passage of time, much better than the original. If you haven't seen it, you will be pleasantly surprised.
- DirectorTakashi ShimizuStarsMegumi OkinaMisaki ItôMisa UeharaA mysterious and vengeful spirit marks and pursues anybody who dares enter the house in which it resides.Forget the American remakes, forget the sequels, for the prequels, forget most everything else that came from this movie.... and just see the original. It has an incredibly spooky low-budget charm that is completely lost in all the copies, remakes, and sequels. It is confusing. It is bizarre. It is hard to follow the time sequencing. And all of that makes it wonderful. Great Asian horror movie that deserves the worldwide attention it eventually received.
- DirectorAndy MuschiettiStarsVictoria HarrisBerta RosIrma MonroigA young girl wakes up and tells her sister that their mother has returned home. This is a short film that Guillermo del Toro saw and declared as "the scariest film I have ever seen". In fact, it prompted him to create a full-length feature film also titled Mama which is absolutely a horrible piece of trash that never should have been filmed.... BUT! The original short film, even only about 3 minutes, is full of wonderfully disturbing darkness that your mind will not soon forget.
- DirectorRoman PolanskiStarsJohnny DeppFrank LangellaLena OlinA book broker discovers his latest find may summon Satan. This horror movie is beautifully constructed. Frank Langella and Johnny Depp are both perfect in their roles. Very believable. The slow build-up in this movie is a PERFECT example of how horror movies can build the absolute best ambiance for terror without CGI and gore. Believable enough to be creepy and holds back enough to keep you guessing. Very nice. The ending was pretty poor and should have been re-written but the rest of the movie is worth being on this list on its own merit...
- DirectorPark Chan-wookStarsChoi Min-sikYoo Ji-taeKang Hye-jeongAfter being kidnapped and imprisoned for fifteen years, Oh Dae-Su is released, only to find that he must track down his captor in five days. The original Korean movie Oldboy is another genre straddler. Is it horror? Suspense? Mystery? I don't know, but it's generally in the horror section so I've added this wonderful tale of terrifying revenge. The fact that Spike Lee felt like he needed to remake this already great piece of art for American audiences reeks of Hollywood narcissism. Please forget Spike, and see this original slate of uncomfortable brilliance.
- DirectorAlejandro AmenábarStarsNicole KidmanChristopher EcclestonFionnula FlanaganIn 1945, immediately following the end of Second World War, a woman who lives with her two photosensitive children on her darkened old family estate in the Channel Islands becomes convinced that the home is haunted.Probably the best haunted house flick ever made, The Others provides a terrific plot and enough twists to keep even the hard core satisfied. Kidman's performance is truly great and is matched by almost every other actor involved. Again, the slow build into madness and anxiety is a very hard feat that this movie accomplishes beautifully.
- DirectorTobe HooperStarsJoBeth WilliamsHeather O'RourkeCraig T. NelsonA family's home is haunted by a host of demonic ghosts.I had to add this one. Partly because I grew up with it. I still remember how disturbing the imagery was to me as a child. I watched it several times as an adult, fully expecting to be underwhelmed as often happens when we see films from our youth, but on the contrary was fascinated and just as entertained as my younger days. What a great ghost movie. Very suspenseful and frightening, aging the decades reasonably well!
- DirectorRoman PolanskiStarsMia FarrowJohn CassavetesRuth GordonA young couple trying for a baby moves into an aging, ornate apartment building on Central Park West, where they find themselves surrounded by peculiar neighbors.Another classic that simply cannot be ignored. How can one forget this movie, spawning so many future films/stories/television programs? With 2 films on this list, Polanski seems to have made at least 2 horror gems deserving of high status over almost half a century. This one ages the years gracefully. The acting is certainly of the era, satirizing other Doris Day-style films of the time and then slowly degrading into madness and horror.
- DirectorMiguel MartíStarsMacarena GómezAlejo SaurasCésar CaminoA femme fatale fashionista at a trendy design school embarks on a brutal and bloody killing spree, while gleefully evading the hapless cops assigned to the murder cases.Macarena Gomez (Dagon) has made so many wonderful Spanish horror movies that it's hard to not put even more on this list.... but this one is one of her best. It's bizarre to be certain. It's tongue-in-cheek. It's gorey in an early Peter Jackson sort of way. It's definitely not predictable. She often breaks the aesthetic distance between the audience as she narrates her own story to the screen. I found it wonderful, in a "Spanish" Sam Raimi fashion.
- DirectorChristophe GansStarsRadha MitchellLaurie HoldenSean BeanA woman, Rose, goes in search for her adopted daughter within the confines of a strange, desolate town called Silent Hill. This one takes a little explaining. Let me just start by saying - the acting is horrendous. Yes very true. The dialogue is horrible as well. Yes, check. So why is this on the list, you ask? Because of the imagery. Watch this movie for the imagery alone. Based off the popular video game, somehow they manage to create one of the most disturbing atmospheres and creepy imagery every captured on film. Amazing. Maybe turn the volume down and watch with subtitles to escape the poor dialogue and acting..... Ha!
- DirectorAndré ØvredalStarsOtto JespersenRobert StoltenbergKnut NærumA group of students investigates a series of mysterious bear killings, but learns that there are much more dangerous things going on. They start to follow a mysterious hunter, learning that he is actually a troll hunter.Norway's best horror movie, Trolljegeren is my favorite 'found-footage' horror movie. I find this genre to be a little tiresome now with so many bad attempts, but this one is brilliant. Low-key enough to be realistic and the acting is perfectly believable. Special effects are so great! They aren't over-the-top or low-budget looking. I love the connection between Norway/Swedish mythology and this documentary style footage. I'm a sucker for that if it's done well.
- DirectorRandy MooreStarsRoy AbramsohnElena SchuberKatelynn RodriguezIn a world of fake castles and anthropomorphic rodents, an epic battle begins when an unemployed father's sanity is challenged by a chance encounter with two underage girls on holiday.Oh my, this is right up my alley. Shot guerrilla-style at Disney World with their scripts on their smart phones (to avoid Disney throwing them in jail), this totally bizarre horror film is a slow-building acid trip to terror. Very strange in all the right ways. A very low-budget affair done just right to be weird.
- DirectorÁlex de la IglesiaStarsJavier GutiérrezLeonor WatlingSancho GraciaIn Spain, the sports journalist Juan has a perfect life with his wife Sonia: they have just had a baby and moved to an old house that needs to be repaired in a fancy neighborhood. When Juan's sister and her husband visit the couple, they give them an electronic nanny to monitor the baby's room. During the night, Juan and Sonia hear voices in the room but they do not find anybody. On the next day, Juan hires an alarm system for the house and a monitor to observe the baby's room. When Juan sees a man in the room, he gets a knife to protect his son. However, Sonia believes her husband is insane and moves to her mother's house. Juan investigates the happening with the former journalist Domingo, who explains him the paradoxical experiment Schrodinger's Cat and the existence of parallel worlds. Further, he advises the obsessed Juan to leave the house otherwise could be trapped in another world.I love the Spanish take on horror. They have created so many interesting and well written scenarios. This one is sufficiently creepy and very well-acted. Part of a 6 part television series in Spain.
- DirectorJaume BalagueróStarsMacarena GómezNuria GonzálezAdrià ColladoMario and his pregnant girlfriend Clara are trying to find in a short period a new apartment to live since they have sold their apartment and they need to move in fifteen days. When Mario finds an attractive advertisement in his mailbox, he convinces Clara to visit the place with him. He drives to a far area in the periphery and meets the real estate agent in front of an old building in an abandoned neighborhood. When the couple sees the apartment, they do not like it but they are forced to stay.Another Spanish part of this television series, Macarena Gomez again stars in yet another very good horror feature - this one about an insane experience in finding a good apartment...
- DirectorMateo GilStarsJuan José BallestaNatalia MillánJordi DauderAn elderly writer visits the small village where he grew up and as he walks through he catches a glimpse of the same woman he fell in love with in his youth but she has not aged at all! He follows her, but is not ready for what he findsMy third and final addition from the Spanish television series "Films to Keep You Awake", Spectre reminds me of the American movie "Haunted" starring Aidan Quinn, but much better execution. I love this type of story and was waiting for a worthy version to surface. It finally did in 2006. Sad, eerie, and wistful.... nice story and acting.
- DirectorRobert FuestStarsVincent PriceJoseph CottenVirginia NorthDoctor, scientist, organist, and biblical scholar Anton Phibes seeks revenge on the nine doctors he considers responsible for the death of his wife.Vincent Price has been a long favorite of mine and I love and appreciate so many of his movies. This one holds a special place in my heart (along with the sequel). The purposely campy style is wonderfully endearing. If you let yourself go with it without reservation, you'll find it to be a great journey in classic horror.
- DirectorRobert FuestStarsVincent PriceRobert QuarryValli KempThe vengeful doctor rises again, seeking the Scrolls of Life in an attempt to resurrect his deceased wife. It's hard for me to separate this great sequel from it's predecessor above, and so I won't. I almost view them as one classic piece of horror art. Watch them together on a Saturday night. Give in to the classic Vincent Price horror nostalgia. If you can let yourself go, you shouldn't be disappointed.
- DirectorDavid PriorStarsEric LangeJohn BillingsleyRay WiseHaunted by recent events and on the run, a man finds himself the unwitting pawn of a possessed evangelical radio station and like his unfortunate predecessor must ask himself whether it is better to reign in hell than serve in heaven.Terrific short film, with Lovecraft inspiration! It's hard enough to find Lovecraft inspired work that is any good, so when I do I am especially excited. Great acting! Nice buildup and suspense in unexpected places.
- DirectorTakashi MiikeStarsRyo IshibashiEihi ShiinaTetsu SawakiA widower takes an offer to screen girls at a special audition, arranged for him by a friend to find him a new wife. The one he fancies is not who she appears to be after all.Yet another Asian bizarre movie with confusing time sequencing and nonsensical dream sequences. But this one is good! Very good. Is it horror? Mmmmm, arguably yes. It's another great revenge tale, of epic proportions. Very grotesque, but maintains the necessity of it through the plot to be very necessary. Very good.
- DirectorAdrián CardonaRafa DengráDavid MuñozStarsJosé María AngorrillaPep SaisMayka DengráMr Olivares has already recovered, but now he needs a vacation. To go to some heavenly place where he can relax and blithely enjoy himself.Spain arguably puts out one of the highest amount of quality horror films of any country. This short is yet another example. Their horror-comedy films are also arguably THE best of any country. This one is one of my current favorites. Try to find it. Very funny.
- DirectorÁlex de la IglesiaStarsHugo SilvaMario CasasPepón NietoA gang of armed robbers finds a safe haven in a secluded village crammed with witches--only to encounter the bizarre, the unexpected, and the occult. Can they save themselves, and the rest of the world from the next witch apocalypse?I have so many Spanish horror films on this list, but I have to add one more. This one is yet another triumph of Spanish comedy-horror. They must have loved the evil dead trilogy over there. This one is really great stuff, actually suspenseful, great acting, great effects, Macarena Gomez, weird cults, who could ask for more?
- DirectorAndrew LemanStarsMatt FoyerJohn BolenRalph LucasWhile sorting the affairs of his late Uncle, a man accidentally stumbles across a series of dark secrets connected to an ancient horror waiting to be freed.Very nice homage to the silent film era of the 1920's... this adaptation of the Lovecraft story is very faithful to the original written word. Nice score to this silent short film. I love when Lovecraft adaptations are actually good (very rare)!
- DirectorGuillermo del ToroStarsMarisa ParedesEduardo NoriegaFederico LuppiAfter Carlos - a 12-year-old whose father has died in the Spanish Civil War - arrives at an ominous boys' orphanage, he discovers the school is haunted and has many dark secrets which he must uncover. To me, this is Guillermo del Toro's best horror movie. Most of his movies are not deserving of this list. I think most of his stuff is overrated. This movie, however, is a very nice ambiance-heavy war drama that happens to have some horror elements. The child acting is VERY good here, which is rare in the United States... You don't have kids whispering I SEE DEAD PEOPLE incredibly loudly as if they just got out of acting class.... ;)
- DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsRoy ScheiderRobert ShawRichard DreyfussWhen a killer shark unleashes chaos on a beach community off Cape Cod, it's up to a local sheriff, a marine biologist, and an old seafarer to hunt the beast down.Who doesn't find this movie creepy at times? It's a horror classic. Can't deny it.
- DirectorDavid CronenbergStarsOliver ReedSamantha EggarArt HindleA man tries to uncover an unconventional psychologist's therapy techniques on his institutionalized wife, amidst a series of brutal murders. In the 80's, horror movies started getting admittedly campy. This one was right on the cusp - but it escaped! I love Oliver Reed. He's an immediate draw for me to any film. This one is simply put a great piece of classic horror cinema. Weird, disturbing, and it ages very well through the years if you know what you're getting into.
- DirectorQuentin LawrenceStarsForrest TuckerLaurence PayneJennifer JayneA series of decapitations on a Swiss mountainside appear to be connected to a mysterious radioactive cloud.Oh boy, this one is simply a guilty pleasure of mine. I watch a lot of the 1950's horror flicks and enjoy all of them. Most of them don't make my 'favorites' list but I still really love them all. This one, though, I don't know - I love it for some reason. Super cheesy and you REALLY have to let go of your expectations for this one. Maybe it's the addition of Janet Munro (Darby O'Gill and the Little People) but something about it is super endearing.
- DirectorPeter MedakStarsGeorge C. ScottTrish Van DevereMelvyn DouglasAfter experiencing tragic personal losses, a music professor rents a Seattle mansion, haunted by a slain boy.George C. Scott leads this acting tour de force of classic horror/mystery. It's part supernatural, party mystery. Creepy ambiance abounds in this tale of deceit and sleuthing.
- DirectorZoe BerriatúaStarsOna CasamiquelaMacarena GómezPablo TuréganoThere seems to be no end to the great horror shorts and movies from Spain. Macarena Gomez stars in this terrific little piece of cinema combining pained relationships with murder.
- DirectorDan GildarkStarsJason CottleCasey CurranEthan AtkinsonA Seattle history professor, drawn back to his estranged family on the Oregon coast to execute his late mother's estate, is reaquainted with his best friend from childhood, with whom he has a long-awaited tryst. Caught in an accelerating series of events, he discovers aspects of his father's New Age cult which take on a dangerous and apocalyptic significance. If you've read this list, you already know I'm a sucker for good Lovecraft adaptations. This one is VERY far removed from faithful, but an interesting rendition nonetheless. It's basically a homosexual version of Dagon/Shadow Over Innsmouth. The acting is very good, with a couple of over-acting exceptions. Low-budget nice work here.
- DirectorJack ArnoldStarsRichard CarlsonJulie AdamsRichard DenningA strange prehistoric beast lurks in the depths of the Amazonian jungle. A group of scientists try to capture the animal and bring it back to civilization for study.Really cool nostalgic 3D movie from the 50's. Even better than Vincent Price's House of Wax 2 years earlier in 3D, in my opinion. Still holds up as great 3D work even today. Find it on blu-ray!
- DirectorGuillermo del ToroStarsFederico LuppiRon PerlmanClaudio BrookA mysterious device designed to provide its owner with eternal life resurfaces after four hundred years, leaving a trail of destruction in its path.Very nice subdued take on vampirism from a younger Guillermo del Toro. I like the slow build and the delayed onset of terror in this young Ron Perlman horror flick. No gore necessary in this one.
- DirectorSteve DanielsStarsSean BlueKdawn BranhamJane BruttoIn this dark, whimsical fantasy, a man travels deep into the forest to stop a creature from creating cursed silverware that brings unhappiness to the world. What a nice short film! Humorous. Very well done for an amateur filmmaker. Looking forward to the next venture.
- DirectorSam RaimiStarsAlison LohmanJustin LongRuth LivierA loan officer who evicts an old woman from her home finds herself the recipient of a supernatural curse. Desperate, she turns to a seer to try and save her soul, while evil forces work to push her to a breaking point. If you didn't already know the history of Sam Raimi, this movie might seem horrible to you. But if you realize his style of sarcasm and satire, then you'll see the brilliance in this over-the-top horror-comedy. Gorey, of course! What else would befit Raimi?
- DirectorRob ZombieStarsSid HaigKaren BlackBill MoseleyTwo young couples traveling across the backwoods of Texas searching for urban legends of murder end up as prisoners of a bizarre and sadistic backwater family of serial killers.Considering how horrible Rob Zombie's other efforts have been, I almost didn't want to include this on this list. However, I do enjoy the self-satire of this movie and the ending's descent into absurdity is hard to ignore and dislike. I admit it, I really enjoy it!
- DirectorIvan RadovicStarsNathalie Ukkola BloomEngulfed by dark thoughts, a woman is forced into a tunnel to confront the creature who is waiting for her in the dark.Beauty meets grotesqueness in this short film of wistful regret and horror. I love the vibe of this and hope to see more from this director.
- DirectorKim Jee-woonStarsLim Soo-jungYum Jung-ahKim Kap-suAfter being institutionalized in a mental hospital, Su-mi reunites with her sister, Su-yeon, and they return to live at their country home. But strange events plague the house, leading to surprising revelations and a shocking conclusion.Japanese horror film, which was remade by Hollywood into a horrible piece of trash. This original movie is very well-acted and (like many other Asian horror films) ambiguous in its meaning, time sequencing, and ending. But I admit that's part of the reason I love them - they leave you unhinged and unpredicting.
- DirectorPaul CampionStarsJulia RoseEuan DempsyRobyn PatersonIn a secure military laboratory, a Scientist has become obsessed with the strange half-eel, half-human creature he's studying. When she beckons him to her, it's the call of a siren...Short film with fishy people being studied by laboratory scientists? Sold.
- DirectorDavid CronenbergStarsJeff GoldblumGeena DavisJohn GetzA brilliant but eccentric scientist begins to transform into a giant man/fly hybrid after one of his experiments goes horribly wrong.Remake a great Vincent Price flick and expect me to like it? Fat chance! Except in this case, that is. I couldn't deny that Jeff Goldblum did a terrific acting job in this recreation of The Fly.
- DirectorKarl FreundStarsBoris KarloffZita JohannDavid MannersA resurrected Egyptian mummy searches Cairo for the girl he believes to be his long-lost princess.Probably my favorite Boris Karloff film. I generally find myself enjoying the horror movies where lots of research into an ancient discovery is effectually portrayed. Well, this is where it started. Great classic!
- DirectorKôji ShiraishiStarsJin MurakiRio KannoTomono KugaA documentary filmmaker explores seemingly unrelated paranormal incidents connected by the legend of an ancient demon called the "kagutaba."Very good Asian horror movie in classic early 2000's style. This one is a very good rendition of the classic 'supernatural curse' premise. Great idea and some really creepy disturbing scenes. If they could have just written out the mentally retarded character (played pretty poorly), then it could have been truly great.
- DirectorRobin HardyStarsEdward WoodwardChristopher LeeDiane CilentoA puritan police sergeant arrives in a Scottish island village in search of a missing girl, who the pagan locals claim never existed. Most remakes are awful, and the remake to this classic is no exception; however, you should watch both. This one because it's a great classic example of getting the rug of reality pulled out from your feet and feeling the awkward sense of dread from your surroundings. The new one because Nicholas Cage acts so horrifically in it and the dialogue is so unbelievably bad that it can provide a couple of hours of hilarity. But no really, this one is good.
- DirectorSam RaimiStarsBruce CampbellEmbeth DavidtzMarcus GilbertWhen Ash Williams is accidentally transported to 1300 A.D., he must retrieve the Necronomicon and battle an army of the dead in order to return home. Here it is, Bruce Campbell again. Sam Raimi again. In there final addition to the forever cult-classic Evil Dead Trilogy. This one is probably my favorite of the 3. It's not for everyone. It's very silly. I enjoyed it. If you haven't already seen this and know all about it, I'm not sure it's for you. Ha!
- DirectorSam RaimiStarsBruce CampbellSarah BerryDan HicksAsh Williams, the lone survivor of an earlier onslaught of flesh-possessing spirits, holes up in a cabin with a group of strangers while the demons continue their attack.I must add a couple of the Evil Dead trilogy movies onto this list. Granted, they aren't for everybody. Are they funny? Well, it's an acquired test admittedly. This is often cited as the best, although I tend to favor the 3rd effort a little more.
- DirectorWolf RillaStarsGeorge SandersBarbara ShelleyMartin StephensIn the English village of Midwich, the blonde-haired, glowing-eyed children of uncertain paternity prove to have frightening powers.Surprisingly creepy for a 1960 horror flick. I enjoy this movie. The children acted brilliantly. I wish child actors had this ability today, but over-acting seems to be the wave of the future.
- DirectorDerek LeeClif ProwseStarsClif ProwseDerek LeeMichael GillTwo best friends see their trip of a lifetime take a dark turn when one of them is struck by a mysterious affliction. Now, in a foreign land, they race to uncover the source before it consumes him completely.I like this movie. It's an amateur production of a modern interesting take on vampirism. It's not yet another cheesy teen love-vampire drama. It does at times border on the type of teenage dialogue I despise, but just barely restrains enough to keep me from disliking it. The premise is original and intriguing enough for me to include it. Could have been better certainly, but very good amateur effort!
