- DirectorRichard FleischerStarsOrson WellesDean StockwellDiane VarsiTwo wealthy law-school students go on trial for murder in this version of the Leopold-Loeb case.Orson Welles sure got fat as he got older. Old and tired looking too.
The two perpetrators of the crime were totally unlikable. This movie became more about should we hang them or sentence them to life in prison. Once the glasses hung the two (left at the scene). 6-1-2017 - DirectorDerek CianfranceStarsRyan GoslingBradley CooperEva MendesTwo men and their sons must deal with the unforeseen consequences of their actions.First things first. The Ryan Gossling character reminded me of that blonde *beep* from Fargo. I'm thinking, age has been kind to him, hehe.
I really liked the concept of a three part play. And those critics that said the last two were too long? Well, I disagree with that. - DirectorDan GilroyStarsJake GyllenhaalRene RussoBill PaxtonWhen Louis Bloom, a con man desperate for work, muscles into the world of L.A. crime journalism, he blurs the line between observer and participant to become the star of his own story.I had read some of the reviews that stated Lou was one of the most hated major characters in a film.
He is in every take by the way.
I didn't agree at first. He just seemed to be a persistent, aggressive, initiative taking guy who let NOTHING bother him.
However, by the end, after he sacrifices everything for some lousy film to sell to a news station.....I agreed totally with the review. - DirectorShea SizemoreStarsDavid KeithCoby Ryan McLaughlinKeean JohnsonThree generations of totally opposite men go on a weekend 'retreat' at Heritage Falls and, in the process, are forced to get over their longstanding differences. It was admittedly full of those father/son cliches....but still entirely watchable.
Just proves that sometimes you just gotta do what you think you hate doing because there is some real life happiness on the other side.
Can't believe though that kids actually talk to their parents this way. I know I never got away with any of that. - DirectorMinhal BaigStarsAnna CampJustin ChatwinIsabelle FuhrmanPast and present collide when two couples explore love over the course of one night at a hotel.I kept thinking the 30 something y.o woman was attractive enough to play the younger star-crossed lover.
I didn't think the movie worked as a whole, and the bit at the end about wormwholes and disappearing in seven seconds was supposed to make it thought provoking. - DirectorJay ShapiroA love letter to the game of baseball from the place you'd least expect.Reminded me a lot of that last movie I ever saw with Shasha...the one about finding cricket players in India to pitch in major league baseball. One of the things that came to light was how little attention Uganda pays to things like birth certificates. They don't really even celebrate birthdays there.
Cameo appearance from Rollins. - DirectorKelly ReichardtStarsMichelle WilliamsBruce GreenwoodPaul DanoSettlers traveling through the Oregon desert in 1845 find themselves stranded in harsh conditions. It was bleak. The absence of water, and the crackling dryness of the terrain they were crossing makes this film pretty grim.
My favorite scene was when they tried to lower the wagons down a grade with a rope. The rope broke, the covered wagon overturned, broke, and all the water drained out.
Nobody said a single cuss word. - DirectorHenry HathawayStarsSteve McQueenKarl MaldenBrian KeithA half-American Indian and half-white teenager evolves into a hardened killer as he tracks down his parents' murderers.Quite an impressive cast.
Hard to think of Steve McQueen as a "boy", everyone in the cast kept referring to him that way.
Great to see old husky voiced Suzanne Pleshette with a role here.
Brian Keith's character was very likeable. Would have been good to see these two link up at film's end. Keith looked like he could've used a helper in his gun business. - DirectorShane Van DykeStarsBarry Van DykeSage MearsGreg EviganA young woman enlists the aid of a bounty hunter to teach her to be a gunfighter so she can hunt down the men who killed her family. The acting was like nails on a chalkboard. Can't really put a finger on it as to why. I guess when your budget is cheap, so is the acting. I didn't think the lone bounty hunter looked at all like his father Dick Van Dyke. I also didn't like the way the movie ended, with him conveniently stating: he has family back home. Was hoping he'd end up with the widow. 6-18-2917
- DirectorAnthony O'BrienStarsJames RansoneJosh PeckElisa LasowskiIn the wild, snow covered gold fields of Alaska, two brothers embark on a journey to collect a bounty in a desperate attempt to save their home: but what they find along the way is more than they bargained for.Two characters are left living at the end of this rather somber, cold, and bleak story of two bounty hunter sons after their own father. 6-25-2017
- DirectorOren UzielStarsBenjamin WalkerRainn WilsonStephanie SigmanAn inventive crime thriller told backwards reversing day by day through a week following a local sheriff's quest to unlock the mystery of three small-town criminals and a bank heist gone wrong.Took me a while to figure out it is only from the chapter heads that this movie played backwards. Within the context of the chapter heads though, it was all forward moving.
- DirectorDavid FincherStarsJake GyllenhaalRobert Downey Jr.Mark RuffaloBetween 1968 and 1983, a San Francisco cartoonist becomes an amateur detective obsessed with tracking down the Zodiac Killer, an unidentified individual who terrorizes Northern California with a killing spree.Obsession almost more on the part of his pursuers, as his killing spree pretty much ended at the end of the movie with the taxi cab driver.
Makes you wonder how Leigh/Arthur managed to escape prosecution. THe evidence seemed pretty clear cut. - DirectorJared HessStarsZach GalifianakisOwen WilsonKristen WiigA guard at an armored car company in the Southern U.S. organizes one of the biggest bank heists in American history. Based on the October 1997 Loomis Fargo robbery. Is Zach Galifianakis typecast into a little pigeon hole? Nah, whatever would give anyone that idea?
Having said that, his quirky humor still plays well with me. Although him just waltzing off with 17 million in a van like that when it took him all night just to load it seems far-fetched. - DirectorMorten TyldumStarsBenedict CumberbatchKeira KnightleyMatthew GoodeDuring World War II, the English mathematical genius Alan Turing tries to crack the German Enigma code with help from fellow mathematicians while attempting to come to terms with his troubled private life.Enigma cut two years off the war against the Germans. Gay people got forced hormonal treatment in the 50's. This guy that made the machine ended his life because of that.
He was arrogant. - DirectorDenise Di NoviStarsRosario DawsonKatherine HeiglGeoff StultsA woman sets out to make life a living hell for her ex-husband's new fiancée.I had thought the David lead character was the guy from Six Feet Under. Wrong! I guess if K Heigl is truly a bitch in real life, she might as well play one on film. I knew that the actress who played the mother looked familiar. Turns out, she was Cheryl Ladd!
The ending, with the mother "taking the place" of the daughter was contrived and forced. - DirectorOren MovermanStarsMichael ChernusTaylor Rae Almonte-RomanSteve CooganTwo sets of wealthy parents meet for dinner to decide what to do about a crime their sons have committed.I felt absolutely no sympathy for the millennial aged boy,,,the protagonist of the evil. Seeing him light up that homeless person in the ATM lobby, and film it with his phone,,,well,
that's just about evrything wrong with self absorbed kids these days. - DirectorEleanor CoppolaStarsDiane LaneArnaud ViardAlec BaldwinThe wife of a successful movie producer takes a car trip from the south of France to Paris with one of her husband's associates.I didn't realize that Eleanor Coppola was 80 directing this. I thought she was like Sofia's sister or something, turns out she is married to Francis Ford, and Sofia is her daughter. There was one director older than her, directing a film at 90, but a fantastic accomplishment for someone her age. I agree with some of the criticism, we needed to see more of Alec Baldwin.
- DirectorRand RavichStarsCharlize TheronJohnny DeppJoe MortonAfter an explosion in space and subsequent two-minute radio-out period, two astronauts return home to their wives. Slightly it's revealed that they're not the same as they were.Any movie that takes me more than a month to slog through on Netflix....well, you know it just can't be very good.
It boils down to a simple possession story, and not a well crafted one at that.
What is the deal with the electrocution motiff? Never caught on to that.
Would never have guessed that was Johnny Depp in the lead role. - DirectorRyûhei KitamuraStarsVinnie JonesBradley CooperLeslie BibbA photographer's obsessive pursuit of dark subject matter leads him into the path of a serial killer who stalks late night commuters, ultimately butchering them in the most gruesome ways.Great opening, wth the guy slipping and everyone not realizing he slipped in liters of blood on the subway floor. Kind of a lame premise, though, with the abandoned subway terminal, and viscious flesh eaters who are given slabs of meat, much like the butcher. And that the butcher would later be replaced by the guy who took him out?? See the movie before for lame endings.
- DirectorRichard TrankStarsBen KingsleyBryan McArdleDoron AvrahamWinston Churchill: Walking With Destiny highlights Churchill's years in the political wilderness, his early opposition to Adolf Hitler and Nazism, and his support for Jews under threat by the Nazi regime.I didn't know that the French Premiere at the time of France falling was Reynaud. I didn't know that his mistress was the one who talked him into capitulating. Churchill first met FDR on an island off Canada. Churchill suffered a mild heart attack at the White House that was kept quiet. His doctor ordered him to Florida. The aerial bombing of London between August 1940 and into 1941 was known as the Blitz.
- DirectorAsger LethStarsSam WorthingtonElizabeth BanksJamie BellAs a police psychologist works to talk down an ex-con who is threatening to jump from a Manhattan hotel rooftop, the biggest diamond heist ever committed is in motion.Thought the idea was rather tired and wouldn't play well. Man fakes suicide on a ledge while his brother pulls off a heist in the building across the street. Truth is, they really didn't need the diversion to pull off the heist, and the guy looking for justice could have just as easily guided his brother in from the woods somewhere. But I still really liked it.
- DirectorQuentin TarantinoStarsSamuel L. JacksonKurt RussellJennifer Jason LeighIn the dead of a Wyoming winter, a bounty hunter and his prisoner find shelter in a cabin currently inhabited by a collection of nefarious characters.Seeing this movie makes me seriously wonder why I haven't rushed to see EVERYTHING Quentin has ever done,,,,like twice.
- DirectorJonathan TeplitzkyStarsBrian CoxMiranda RichardsonJohn SlatteryNinety-six hours before the World War II invasion of Normandy, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill struggles with his severe reservations with Operation Overlord and his increasingly marginalized role in the war effort.Paul banged on me for months to see this one. Saw it with Edwinna in my apt. Churchill had his bouts of depression, but could put on a leader face when he needed his people to believe in him. Cracked up at the name of his companion/adviser....Smutz,,,,haha,,,kept calling him Schmuck.
- DirectorStephen DaldryStarsKate WinsletRalph FiennesBruno GanzPost-WWII Germany: Nearly a decade after his affair with an older woman came to a mysterious end, law student Michael Berg re-encounters his former lover as she defends herself in a war-crime trial.I think this touched me a bit when it came out that Michael made cassette tapes for Hannah to listen to while in prison. I couldn't help but wonder if Shasha ever got that way about listening to stuff I read to her through the years.
- DirectorJoe LynchStarsSalma HayekHiroyuki WatanabeLaura CepedaA kidnapped woman faces down hitmen sent by a mob boss/her captor while trying to protect her family from his wrath. This was basically a one woman against a whole building full of bad guys, shoot em up until she meets the main antagonist sort of story.
The sadist part was played very well. He met his end with the send-off "CHeers Motherf#cker" as Everly poured sulfuric acid down his throat. I also liked the role of the Japanese/half dead guy on the couch. He died too early though.
