Thriller/Horror/Suspense Movies I've Rated SIX & Above [ ONGOING ]
Unlike my other lists, this one is devoted to movies I've personally rated/viewed as anything 6-10. To give a bit of reasoning behind my rating system in my lists, anything below 5, I consider unwatchable/not a movie someone should pay money for in any way. Anything at a 5 is something with potential, but it may not have reached the high bar I mentally set for horror movies. Anything above 5 is a movie I would either recommend to someone, or it's a movie I would gladly watch again.
If anyone has any suggestions on a movie I should check out, let me know, and if there are any movies anyone viewing liked more or less than I did, let me know why: you might just change my mind!

Both I and my boyfriend were impressed with this movie. Not only was it decently factual in certain areas, but the minor twists and turns, atop the religious garb I normally would s**t upon for being applied so heavily in a movie of this fashion, honestly had both of us captured through the entirety of this film. Not to mention, Anthony Hopkins plays a wonderful role through and through. - DirectorJoel EdgertonStarsJason BatemanRebecca HallJoel EdgertonA married couple, Simon and Robyn, run into Gordo, an old classmate. Things take a turn when Gordo begins to drop in unannounced at their house and inundates them with mysterious gifts.
- DirectorMike FlanaganStarsElizabeth ReaserLulu WilsonAnnalise BassoIn 1967 Los Angeles, a widowed mother and her daughters add a new stunt to bolster their seance scam business by inviting an evil presence into their home, not realizing how dangerous it is.{ 7/10 }
Personally, I did not like the first OUIJA, and I quite despise sequels lest they are deemed necessary by the end of the first movie (Example: HALLOWEEN & HALLOWEEN 2; the originals, the news ones are abominations.) but I can wholeheartedly admit that this sequel had be enamored until the last 20-30 minutes. Only around that time did I start to get frustrated with how cliched it became, not to mention that horrendous ending that had no bearing on the story whatsoever. Either way, for the majority of this paid watch, I was impressed. - DirectorPaul LeydenStarsJon AbrahamsAndrew BeckhamJeanette BranchSarah and Josh are married suburbanites. After a car accident, Sarah suffers blackouts. As her life spirals she hides a camera in her home and unlocks a horrific secret with far-reaching consequences.

My boyfriend adored this movie. I, however, still do not see the wonderment so many others shared with it. I did have intentions to watch this movie in theaters, but with a hectic schedule, and prices being so high currently, I opted to finding it online. While I wouldn't have particularly wanted to spend money to be immersed in a theater, I was shellshocked at how interesting the story was, despite the minor kinks and plot-holes here and there, and all-in-all, I would likely watch it once more. Paying for it is another story. - StarsRichard ThomasTim ReidAnnette O'TooleIn 1960, seven pre-teen outcasts fight an evil demon who poses as a child-killing clown. Thirty years later, they reunite to stop the demon once and for all when it returns to their hometown.{ 9/10 }
IT holds a special place in my heart. Not because it was a movie my brother nearly forbad me from watching when I was younger due to how graphic certain scenes were (I WAS only 8 when I first sat down and watched it, after all), but because it was the first Stephen King flick I ever viewed. Because of IT, Stephen King became a decent reading staple in my life, where he still sits to this day as a writer I would gladly buy a book from, and this movie became the reason, ironically, that I found clowns so interesting. Unlike so many other people I've spoken to, who say that IT was the reason they feared clowns, I was the odd one out who could proudly (and still do so today) boast that clowns didn't frighten me; hell, they were cool, to me!
No matter how much of an impact this movie had on me, I will be fair in my review. There were minor plot-holes in this movie, but they were, to a young me, so minimal that I never noticed them until I was much older. And even then, they still didn't measure up enough to the high weight of wonderful acting, disturbing subjects, interesting stories, and the all-around confusion I still feel until the near end when everything is, more or less, resolved.
So, yes, it is probably because this movie had captured my heart when I was little that makes me adore it so much, but I still believe it's just a fantastic movie, with a perfect villain.
Au revoir, Pennywise. - DirectorRob ReinerStarsJames CaanKathy BatesRichard FarnsworthAfter a famous author is rescued from a car crash by a fan of his novels, he comes to realize that the care he is receiving is only the beginning of a nightmare of captivity and abuse.{ 8/10 }
Another wonderful Stephen King flick, with such a visceral feel and occasionally uncomfortable moments, that stole my heart when I was young. While it can't rise to the love I will always feel for Pennywise, our terrifying ''heroin'', to which I use ever so loosely, will always give me chills and remind me why I find Kathy Bates such a wonderful actress back then, and even now.
There have been parts in this movie that, when I watched over again, stood out to me as incorrect, or just plain unrealistic, but they were few and far between, keeping this gem at a solid 8, steadying on a 9. - DirectorKaare AndrewsAngela BettisHélène CattetStarsIngrid Bolsø BerdalIván GonzálezKyra ZagorskyA 26-chapter anthology that showcases death in all its vicious wonder and brutal beauty.{ 7/10 }
No, there is no story, and yes, that's important to me in a horror movie, but with something so...ridiculous and well planned like this film, my pickiness goes out the window when it comes to story and such. It honestly reminded me of watching Creepshow when I was very young; they had no real plot, they didn't have a connecting story other than the magazine, and I still think that was what made it so fun as a kid. - DirectorRodney AscherJulian BarrattRobert BoocheckStarsEric JacobusAndy NymanSimon BarrettAnother 26-chapter anthology that showcases death in all its vicious wonder and brutal beauty.{ 7/10 }
Quite honestly a bit better than the first. (But, do check that review for a full run-down on why I enjoyed it.) - DirectorMichael DoughertyStarsAdam ScottToni ColletteDavid KoechnerA boy who has a bad Christmas accidentally summons a festive demon to his family home.{ 7/10 }
Though my boyfriend adored this movie as well, I merely enjoyed watching it. Nothing more, nothing less. The ending proved to be the best scene to me, as it wasn't happy, and was left for those watching to interpret as they wished, but the overall movie was a bit cliched, a tiny bit unorthodox, and certainly minorly confusing. - DirectorJon CassarStarsMorris ChestnutRegina HallRomany MalcoA surrogate mom for a couple becomes dangerously obsessed with the soon-to-be father.{ 8/10 }
It isn't truly a horror movie, and though it plays like a more fu**ed LMN movie, I loved this movie. Maybe it's my adoration for things of this nature (crazy woman/man; surrogacy gone wrong; cheating implied but no cheating; etc, etc) and for LMN movies (older ones, rather) in general, but the overall story had me captured through the entirety of it, and the ending proved to be what I was expecting, plus some. I'm quite glad I paid to see it in theaters. - DirectorDavid F. SandbergStarsLotta LostenWhen you are all alone in a small dark room, what do you fear the most? Is it the temporary blindness or is it the uneasy deep feeling that someone, or rather something, is observing your every move?{ 6/10 }
Yes, it's less than 10 minutes, and yes, it's a little short film that inspired a movie, but why, I'm sure someone is asking, wouldn't I have the full film here instead of it's predecessor? Simple! I despised the feature film. It ruined a perfectly executed concept, and did everything in it's power to monopolize on something simple and sweet. The fact that I paid to see the film, and merely found this sitting in Youtube one afternoon, should say a lot for why it's here.
Simple, sweet, and to the point isn't always a bad way to go about a movie. This needed no theater release, and it didn't require a terrible addition to it's plot-less tale. - DirectorJames DeMonacoStarsFrank GrilloElizabeth MitchellMykelti WilliamsonFormer Police Sergeant Barnes becomes head of security for Senator Charlie Roan, a Presidential candidate targeted for death on Purge night due to her vow to eliminate the Purge.{ 6/10 }
Another movie my boyfriend adored, and I merely enjoyed. The film overall was quite interesting, and rather cleverly written...until the remaining 30-40 minutes...which is nearly a quarter of the movie. From that point, when terrible action quips are spoken, and awful acting, alongside stupid deaths and pointless side-plots, I nearly lost interest. Not enough to walk out of the theater, nor enough to wish I had never paid to see something that ended as terribly as I had hoped it wouldn't, but it got damn close. - DirectorPerry BlackshearStarsMacLeod AndrewsEvan DumouchelMargaret Ying DrakeSuspecting that people around him are turning into evil creatures, a troubled man questions whether to protect his only friend from an impending war, or from himself.{ 8/10 }
Though They Look Like People hasn't gained anything higher than an 8 from me, don't take that as me not adoring this movie. With minor annoyances in writing, and in scene-play, I had to personally score it what I did. Does that mean I didn't like it? Of course not. Does that mean I would actively go out and watch it religiously? Still no.
I will, however, recommend this movie to any and everyone asking for a good suspense movie, or even a psychological thriller, because, in those aspects, it does deliver pretty well. In horror, however, it really didn't reach the bar I was hoping for. It wasn't necessarily scary, nor was it really...unsettling. Rather, it merely made me curious, as well as a bit saddened for our ''protagonist''.
Though it plays out more like a psychological thriller, and a good one at that, it does have a rather important message, making it all-in-all a rather impressive movie. - DirectorJohannes RobertsStarsSarah Wayne CalliesJeremy SistoSofia RosinskyAfter her young son is killed in a tragic accident, a woman learns of a ritual which will bring him back to say goodbye, but when she disobeys a sacred warning, she upsets the balance between life and death.{ 6/10 }
Would this be worth paying money for? Not really. Would it be worth searching for an hour to find a decent copy? Maybe. Would it be worth watching? Eh.
I didn't really fawn over this movie, and when it first started up, I was a bit skeptical. The oddities of it were interesting, what with the ritual and the singular rule given to her, but with the weird inconsistencies and the slightly illogical cuts to different locations, it didn't really ring that true on the ''magnificent-meter'' for me.
The concept was rather solid, but the story was pretty lacking. - DirectorDavid FarrStarsClémence PoésyDavid MorrisseyStephen Campbell MooreA couple expecting their first child discover an unnerving difference between themselves and the couple living in the flat below them who are also having a baby.
- DirectorWilliam Brent BellStarsLauren CohanRupert EvansJames RussellAn American nanny is shocked that her new English family's boy is actually a life-sized doll. After she violates a list of strict rules, disturbing events make her believe that the doll is really alive.{ 6/10 }
This movie was predictable, and not worth the 10 bucks I would have spent on it had I seen it theaters like a good little egg. It wasn't that cliched or expectable until the halfway mark, when things started getting weird, and she started experiencing violent mood-swings by the doll. The twist was seeable from 100 feet away, and the entirety of it from there was rather lackluster and confusing, not to mention a little creepy (that was honestly the only benefit at that point). But! Until that halfway mark, it was a decently creepy movie, with moments here and there that had me quirking an eyebrow. If only it followed the beginning's lead. - DirectorDavid SladeStarsPatrick WilsonElliot PageSandra OhHayley's a smart, charming teenage girl. Jeff's a handsome, smooth fashion photographer. An Internet chat, a coffee shop meet-up, an impromptu fashion shoot back at Jeff's place. Jeff thinks it's his lucky night. He's in for a surprise.{ 7/10 }
Not only was I impressed with this movie, but I adored the acting, the story, the twist at the end, the entire reasoning behind the protagonist's actions, and especially the wink at an unsettling addition to Ellen Page's acting list. Bravo to both actors, and bravo to the unexpected violence brought on by someone as young as she. - DirectorMike FlanaganStarsJohn Gallagher Jr.Kate SiegelMichael TruccoA deaf and mute writer who retreated into the woods to live a solitary life must fight for her life in silence when a masked killer appears at her window.{ 8/10 }
I cannot count how many times I have recommended this movie to friends and family, now that it's boring knock-off DON'T BREATHE has come out. Don't worry, I won't complain about that trash on this review more than what I already have.
HUSH was written rather brilliantly, and though there were a few annoyances here and there, I was rather impressed overall with how it played, how it ended, how it was acted, and how it was developed story-wise. Maybe it was just me, but pretty quickly, you develop an adoration for the protagonist, and you hope above everything that she makes it out alive; she was a very relatable and human character, and that certainly gave the movie some love from me. - DirectorKevin GreutertStarsIsla FisherAnson MountGillian JacobsAfter moving to a vineyard to start a new life with her husband, a pregnant woman begins to experience terrifying visions.
- DirectorKaryn KusamaStarsLogan Marshall-GreenEmayatzy CorinealdiMichiel HuismanWhen a man accepts an invitation to a dinner party hosted by his ex-wife, the unsettling past reopens old wounds and creates new tensions.{ 8/10 }
Yes, the ending was lackluster, cliche, and all-around silly, but the remainder of the movie lacking the last 15 minutes was fantastic. Kudos to this movie for proving that horror isn't dead in this generation. With visceral scenery and a rather unsettling death near the end (which was the only scene in any movie since I was younger to make me shudder and need to look away; extra kudos!) this movie captured my attention from the very first scene, despite it's rather uncomfortable subject. The twist was a little silly, but as it developed through the movie, and you found yourself tied into the story, as if you were sitting at that dinner table, watching each breakdown and awkward silence, chiming in occasionally to try and end the continuous conflicts with our protagonist, it truly brought home how a fantastic horror movie should be.
I would gladly pay to see this movie again. - DirectorDan TrachtenbergStarsJohn GoodmanMary Elizabeth WinsteadJohn Gallagher Jr.A young woman is held in an underground bunker by a man who insists that a hostile event has left the surface of the Earth uninhabitable.{ 7/10 }
I honestly disliked the movie heavily once it became an open-world adventure, but while our protagonist is trapped and being tormented by a very crazy, very talented John Goodman, this movie had be enamored for the long-run. From kidnapping to murder, there isn't a single moment of lacking in the creep-factor, nor is there a situation where I could predict what was happening.
Though I also dislike that this is what the sequel to a very adored movie of mine ended up being, I was rather impressed with everything they did, from seeing the first glimpse beyond the ''forbidden door'', to seeing the world through the tiny window of said door.
If only it had followed the majority of the movie's lead into the world of spooky. - DirectorM. Night ShyamalanStarsOlivia DeJongeEd OxenbouldDeanna DunaganTwo siblings become increasingly frightened by their grandparents' disturbing behavior while visiting them on vacation.{ 6/10 }
I will give M. Night Shyamalan credit, I was impressed with this movie when it first began. Normally, I would refuse to watch something by the twist-King himself, but with the creepiness of certain scenes, and the raving love from friends who had watched it before I could, I will admit that I was intrigued. And boy, did it pay off...for most of the movie.
There were scenes that I wish hadn't been present, and moments that could have been executed better, but all-in-all, I rather enjoyed the suspense they had built up. If the twist hadn't been so predictable from the moment the movie started, with only one piece missing from that prediction, I think I would have gladly rated this movie higher.
Regardless, I will definitely be looking at more M. Night horrors in the future. - DirectorPatrick BriceStarsKatie AseltonPatrick BriceMark DuplassA young videographer answers an online ad for a one-day job in a remote town to record the last messages of a dying man. When he notices the man's odd behavior, he starts to question his intentions.{ 8/10 }
The very last scene with our protagonist is the reason this movie doesn't have a 9, but that is the only scene, honestly and truly, that had me altering my decision to give this movie the score it deserved.
From the first creepy moment, to the near-end when freedom is in our protagonist's hands, this movie was a roller-coaster of creep and unsettle. There wasn't a single moment that I could find that disappointed me (until the very end, in the park) in this entire movie, and for that, I give it a large amount of love and kudos.
This is definitely a recommended watch to anyone who wants a nightmare here or there.
