- DirectorMartin BrestStarsAl PacinoChris O'DonnellJames RebhornA prep school student needing money agrees to "babysit" a blind man, but the job is not at all what he anticipated.Problems:
1) Al Pacino's intolerable character and antics
2) and the film's/boy's lack of stance against them.
3) Glorification of a douchebag. - DirectorGiuseppe TornatoreStarsMonica BellucciGiuseppe SulfaroLuciano FedericoAmidst the war climate, a teenage boy discovering himself becomes love-stricken by Malèna, a sensual woman living in a small, narrow-minded Italian town.Problems
- the perverse male gaze
- the disgustingly misogynistic way in which Malena's character is written
- the deplorable way in which other female characters are portrayed.
- DirectorDenis VilleneuveStarsEmily BluntJosh BrolinBenicio Del ToroAn idealistic FBI agent is enlisted by a government task force to aid in the escalating war against drugs at the border area between the U.S. and Mexico.Problems: the film's glorification of ...
1) the theme of revenge and
2) Benecio Del Toro's vengeful character who murders 2 children without a blink - CreatorMark GatissSteven MoffatStarsBenedict CumberbatchMartin FreemanUna StubbsThe quirky spin on Conan Doyle's iconic sleuth pitches him as a "high-functioning sociopath" in modern-day London. Assisting him in his investigations: Afghanistan War vet John Watson, who's introduced to Holmes by a mutual acquaintance.Problems:
- the sidelining of female characters (who are rather dumb)
- the pompous and pretentious style in which Sherlock is displayed. I mean, why can't shows present female characters like that?
- the whole pretentious "hmmph-he's-smarter-than-you" aura.
- CreatorDavid ShoreStarsHugh LaurieOmar EppsRobert Sean LeonardUsing a crack team of doctors and his wits, an antisocial maverick doctor specializing in diagnostic medicine does whatever it takes to solve puzzling cases that come his way.Problems:
- the sidelining of female characters (who are rather dumb, over-emotional, a sex object, or 'punished')
- the way House is always glorified no matter how racist/sexist/homophobic/anti theistic the guy's comments are. (Why are there no female characters in film and TV like him?)
- the whole pretentious "hmmph-he's-smarter-than-you" aura.
- DirectorMorten TyldumStarsBenedict CumberbatchKeira KnightleyMatthew GoodeDuring World War II, the English mathematical genius Alan Turing tries to crack the German Enigma code with help from fellow mathematicians while attempting to come to terms with his troubled private life.Problems:
- historical inaccuracy (about communism, Joan Clarke's true role, Turing's "suicide", everything actually)
- presenting the subject like the LONE HERO while downplaying other mathematicians' roles in the code-breaking mission
- tendency to present British society/govt. as overtly strict and cold, lacking any nuance
- the whole pretentious "hmmph-he's-smarter-than-you" aura.
- DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsDaniel Day-LewisSally FieldDavid StrathairnAs the Civil War rages on, U.S President Abraham Lincoln struggles with continuing carnage on the battlefield as he fights with many inside his own cabinet on his decision to emancipate the slaves.Problems:
- the sidelining of women and minorities (all scenes don't HAVE to take place in the Parliament)
- presenting African-American slaves to be largely passive even though this film is supposed to be about their emancipation.
- ignoring the fact that the Amendment so persistently championed by the title character had a loophole which has been exploited to this very day
- DirectorChristian PetzoldStarsNina HossRonald ZehrfeldRainer BockA doctor working in 1980s East Germany finds herself banished to a small country hospital.Problem: the film promises to be about the woman's life and political struggles in communist East Germany, but ends up being a mere love story about her and a doctor.
And i don't feel the chemistry between the two at all. - DirectorCary Joji FukunagaStarsMia WasikowskaMichael FassbenderJamie BellA mousy governess who softens the heart of her employer soon discovers that he's hiding a terrible secret.Problems:
1) The frustrating non-chronological order
2) Tendency to emphasize on "Christian terror" - DirectorLone ScherfigStarsCarey MulliganPeter SarsgaardAlfred MolinaA coming-of-age story about a teenage girl in 1960s suburban London, and how her life changes with the arrival of a playboy nearly twice her age.Problems:
- Tendency to present an overwhelmingly strict and cold British society in the 60s
- caricaturing/simplifying the protagonist's conservative parents but presenting their daughter as "complex and strong"
- never judging the stupid things the heroine does but being quick to pounce on other characters for their faults.
- If Jenny is so intelligent (considering the highly quotable lines she spits at the Headmistress regarding the education system), why did she never try to dig up on the backstory of her mysterious lover? She knows he's a con man stealing old women's paintings, why didn't it ever occur to her that he may be conning HER too?
- DirectorRon HowardStarsRussell CroweEd HarrisJennifer ConnellyA mathematical genius, John Nash made an astonishing discovery early in his career and stood on the brink of international acclaim. But the handsome and arrogant Nash soon found himself on a harrowing journey of self-discovery.1) Presenting the wife character as an object to look at and her having no subplot or scenes to show her mathematical skills (she also studied math in college).
- DirectorJohn CassavetesStarsBen GazzaraTimothy CareySeymour CasselA proud strip club owner is forced to come to terms with himself as a man when his gambling addiction gets him in hot water with the mob, who offer him only one alternative.Problem:
1) Filming women's bodies through the Male Gaze (so many tits!!!), while not doing the same for men's bodies. - DirectorGreta GerwigStarsSaoirse RonanLaurie MetcalfTracy LettsIn 2002, an artistically inclined 17-year-old girl comes of age in Sacramento, California.A painfully average film elevated to 'excellent' status by the media because of the director's gender.
- DirectorKore-eda HirokazuStarsHaruka AyaseMasami NagasawaKahoThree sisters who live in their grandmother's home invite their thirteen-year-old half sister, whom they have just met, to join them.
- Sentimental (and yet considered unsentimental by other critics),
- too stoic and mild-mannered (as emotionally stagnant as its main characters)
- too eager to put on a veil of dignity on its main 2 heroines (as if being odd or passionate or weird will blemish them).
- DirectorKrzysztof KieslowskiStarsJuliette BinocheZbigniew ZamachowskiJulie DelpyA woman struggles to find a way to live her life after the death of her husband and child.morally confusing: so much dignity and pride has been put on the face and stature of a character who slept with a married man with a kid. She is now pregnant with his child and wears a crucifix around her neck and holds her head high as if she has done a saintly thing (there is no hint of guilt or shame for what she has done).
- CreatorBruce MillerStarsElisabeth MossYvonne StrahovskiAnn DowdSet in a dystopian future, a woman is forced to live as a concubine under a fundamentalist theocratic dictatorship.
- So all the villains are religious Christians?
- Where are the true Christians who oppose the regime? Why do we not see through their perspectives?
- So calling someone a "pious little shit" is cool but calling someone a "slutty little shit" won't be right? Can we please not take the word pious and make it a bad thing?
- So basically all pro-lifers are rapists? Is that why we see pro-choice demonstrations having activists dressed in handmaid costumes?
- DirectorEdgar WrightStarsMichael CeraMary Elizabeth WinsteadKieran CulkinIn a magically realistic version of Toronto, a young man must defeat his new girlfriend's seven evil exes one by one in order to win her heart.
- Why, oh why, oh why, would Ramona Flowers, Natalie and ALSO Knives Chau fall for HIM?? He is a mousy, inconfident, weak little twerp with insecurities and issues and a coward.
- I don't feel the chemistry between him and Ramona AT ALL.
- I wish I could know about Ramona Flowers not just through her ex-es and Scott. But through her own perspective.
- Scott and her should not have ended up together.
- DirectorLouis MalleStarsLea MassariBenoît FerreuxDaniel GélinAs France is nearing the end of the first Indochina War, an open-minded teenage boy finds himself torn between a rebellious urge to discover love, and the ever-present, almost dominating affection of his beloved mother.
- People actually find this relatable? It's not realistic! It's ridiculous.
- Everyone is such an obnoxious, snobby slut.
- And let me say it again, you can't throw yourself into the room of a pretty girl at night, all drunk, and expect her to sleep with you. It doesn't happen.
- Also infidelity, thievery and lying have their consequences. Life is more than just some fun game. The film doesn't acknowledge this truth.
- DirectorJacques DemyStarsDominique SandaDanielle DarrieuxRichard BerryAmid an ongoing workers' strike, a steelworker falls in love with the daughter of his baroness landlady, even though both are already in relationships.Stupid characters, clichéd situations, soapy aesthetic, can't take it seriously.
- DirectorJean-Luc GodardStarsBrigitte BardotJack PalanceMichel PiccoliA French writer's marriage deteriorates while working on Fritz Lang's version of "The Odyssey", as his wife accuses him of using her to court favor with the film's brash American producer.mALE GAZE, EXPLOITATION/OVERT SEXUALIZATION OF THE FEMALE BODY, STEREOTYPICAL GENDERED ROLES
