- DirectorMichelle MacLarenStarsBryan CranstonAnna GunnAaron PaulJesse ends up in the hospital after getting beaten up by Hank. Now he is threatening to press charges against the DEA. To stop him, Walt decides to bring Jesse on as his partner, once again. An exceptional episode from the start, but that final scene is jaw-dropping.
- DirectorRian JohnsonStarsBryan CranstonAnna GunnAaron PaulThere is a fly loose in the lab. Walt and Jesse must do whatever they can to kill it before it contaminates the meth.Controversial I know, but Fly is so unlike any other episode that it's hard to evaluate it by the same metrics. However, as far as writing mastery goes, I think you'd be hard pressed to find a cleverer hour of TV so I thought it best go near the top.
- DirectorMichelle MacLarenStarsBryan CranstonAnna GunnAaron PaulJesse and Hank come up with an idea to take Walt down. Walt hires Todd's uncle to kill Jesse. The back half of To'hajilee is a masterclass of sustained tension. It's Breaking Bad at its most wild western and leaves you staring with your jaw agape before it dumps you into the credits in the middle of a gunfight.

Ted still won't pay the IRS so Skyler asks Saul for help, and Saul sends in his A-Team. Gus and Jesse return from Mexico, and Walt fears he is in trouble with Gus.I'm pretty sure most of us will agree that the sequence at the end of this episode did things to us that we'd never felt before.
- DirectorMichelle MacLarenStarsBryan CranstonAnna GunnAaron PaulJesse, Gus, and Mike fly down to Mexico, and Jesse cooks the blue meth for the cartel. Walt misses his son's 16th birthday after his fight with Jesse.
- DirectorPeter GouldStarsBryan CranstonAnna GunnAaron PaulWalt struggles as he adapts to aspects of his new identity. Jesse plans an escape against Jack and his crew. Some reviews have called Granite State a piece moving episode which simply bridges the gap between the horror of Ozymandias and the finale, but I never got that. It shows us Walt at his lowest ebb, and how bad things have got for everyone left in Albequerque, which is all excellent stuff in my mind. But then Walt goes down to the bar for one of the most iconic sequences in all of Breaking Bad. My advice to any other shows: give me a shot of a glass of whisky as the theme tune kicks in and I'll love you forever.

- DirectorTricia BrockStarsBryan CranstonAnna GunnAaron PaulWalt rejects everyone who tries to help him with the cancer. Jesse tries his best to create Walt's meth, with the help of an old friend. An underapreciated episode. Fo me this is where Breaking Bad got really interesting. Walt is given an out, but he choses not to take it. This is the first time that it's made clear that there's something more going on with this guy than simple concern for the future of his family's wellbeing. Amazing that the writers make that clear to us from episode 5, and yet most people reach season 5 and still believe Walt to be some kind of patriachal hero. Also, the talking pillow scene is just wonderful writing.
