- DirectorChristopher GuestStarsKevin BaconJennifer Jason LeighEmily LongstrethFilm school grad Nick Chapman thought his career was made after his award winning short film, but discovered Hollywood wasn't as easy as it seems.A mostly forgotten flick, which actually manages to portray Hollywood's hypocrisy, arrogance and stupidity quite realistically. Kevin Bacon is excellent in this one!
- DirectorMike NicholsStarsMeryl StreepShirley MacLaineDennis QuaidA substance-addicted actress tries to look on the bright side even as she is forced to move back in with her mother to avoid unemployment. This movie is in fact much, much better than it's current IMDb rating would suggest. Filled with continuous, highly memorable one liners, hilarious sight gags, and even a little bit of slapstick. Highly recommended as a "must see". Verified proof of how great writer Carrie Fisher was.
- DirectorBarry LevinsonStarsRobert De NiroJohn TurturroStanley TucciTwo weeks in the life of a fading Hollywood producer who's having a rough time trying to get his new picture made. This was a nice surprise. This film is also much better than its current IMDb rating. For some reason, I really would want to see a sequel, as De Niro makes his character that much interesting, that you would want to see what might or could happen next to poor Ben: is he able to climb back up and exact revenge on those who betrayed him?
- DirectorBen StillerStarsBen StillerJack BlackRobert Downey Jr.Through a series of freak occurrences, a group of actors shooting a big-budget war movie are forced to become the soldiers they are portraying. If this movie doesn't make you laugh, I don't know what will! When actors are making fun of themselves, producers and directors, it can only be funny. Tom Cruise's small role is nothing short of stunningly hilarious! Also, this movies funniest detail is the actor played by Robert Downey Jr. who undergoes skin pigmentation exchange surgery in order to portray an African-American character! This gives a whole new aspect to extreme method acting. - I wonder what would Lee Strasberg say?
- DirectorRichard AttenboroughStarsRobert Downey Jr.Geraldine ChaplinPaul RhysAn elderly Charlie Chaplin discusses his autobiography with his editor, recounting his amazing journey from his poverty-stricken childhood to world-wide success after the ingenious invention of the Little Tramp. One of the better biographical movies ever made, however fictional some parts of it are. Robert Downey Jr. is brilliant in this. This film can stand practically unlimited viewing times, without getting dull at any point.
- DirectorJay RoachStarsBryan CranstonDiane LaneHelen MirrenIn 1947, Dalton Trumbo was Hollywood's top screenwriter, until he and other artists were jailed and blacklisted for their political beliefs.Well acted film and an interesting story of how Hollywood turned American public and its own people into despicable informers and persecutors on behalf of ignorant fascists like McCarthy and Cohen.
- DirectorRobert AltmanStarsTim RobbinsGreta ScacchiFred WardA Hollywood studio executive is being sent death threats by a writer whose script he rejected, but which one?Altman's superb and clever inside satire of Hollywood's inner workings. Pure eye candy on film.
- DirectorJohn Lee HancockStarsEmma ThompsonTom HanksAnnie Rose BuckleyAuthor P.L. Travers reflects on her childhood after reluctantly meeting with Walt Disney, who seeks to adapt her Mary Poppins books for the big screen. The birth complications of Disney's "Mary Poppins".
- DirectorTim BurtonStarsJohnny DeppMartin LandauSarah Jessica ParkerAmbitious but troubled movie director Edward D. Wood Jr. tries his best to fulfill his dreams despite his lack of talent.Sheds some sort of light mostly on Ed Wood's obsessions with uninhibited film making, cross-dressing and Bela Lugosi. Martin Landau does a a fantastic role as Bela Lugosi.
- DirectorSacha GervasiStarsAnthony HopkinsHelen MirrenScarlett JohanssonThe relationship between Alfred Hitchcock and his wife Alma Reville during the filming of Psycho (1960) in 1959 is explored.Concentrates mainly on Hitchcock making "Psycho". Anthony Hopkins clearly wasn't the best possible choice to play Hitchcock, but this movie isn't a total 'bomb' either.
- DirectorBenjamin RossStarsLiev SchreiberJames CromwellMelanie GriffithOrson Welles produces his greatest film, Citizen Kane (1941), despite the opposition of the film's de facto subject, William Randolph Hearst.Orson Welles's purgatory. A very good for a TV movie, Liev Schreiber manages to create a very convincing young Orson Welles.
- DirectorStephen HopkinsStarsGeoffrey RushCharlize TheronEmily WatsonThe feature adaptation of Roger Lewis' book about the actor best remembered as Inspector Clouseau in the Pink Panther movies.Geoffrey Rush overacting as Peter Sellers, slightly confused story telling, leaving huge and unexplained time gaps in the story it really struggles to tell fluently. Does not really do any justice to the Great Peter Sellers!
- DirectorEthan CoenJoel CoenStarsJosh BrolinGeorge ClooneyAlden EhrenreichA Hollywood fixer in the 1950s works to keep the studio's stars in line.Satirical pastiche of Hollywood insiders, which has absolutely nothing to do with reality. One of Coen Brothers' best drama-comedy films. A-Must-See!
- DirectorKen OchiaiStarsSeizô FukumotoChihiro YamamotoMasashi GôdaSeizo Fukumoto has reportedly died 50,000 times in a career that has spanned half a century. His work catches the eye of Satsuki, who requests that he mentor her into becoming as good a fighter as he.A Fantastic film, a truly surprisingly good film, which shows to us an aspect found only in Japanese movie industry. The way the film borrows most of the main plot and theme from Chaplin's "Limelight" is brilliant, however it stands more than well on its own. Truly RECOMMENDED to SEE - you won't be disappointed!
IMPORTANT NOTE: Ignore the poor ratings for this movie, they have been manipulated to show poor ratings, by a former employee of the production company. - DirectorJoseph PevneyStarsJames CagneyDorothy MaloneJane GreerThe life and career of vaudevillian and silent-screen horror star Lon Chaney, including his contentious relationship with his neurotic wife and his premature death.Really good film, which unfortunately feels a bit short. One of Cagney's top 5 performances.
- DirectorE. Elias MerhigeStarsJohn MalkovichWillem DafoeUdo KierThe filming of Nosferatu (1922) is hampered by the fact that its star Max Schreck is taking the role of a vampire far more seriously than seems humanly possible.Fictionalized film history, which includes some of the known conspiracy theories related to making Murnau's "über-classic" "Nosferatu, Eine Symphonie des Grauens" (1922).
- DirectorKinji FukasakuStarsKeiko MatsuzakaMorio KazamaMitsuru HirataA lowly obsequious member of a movie star's entourage agrees to marry his boss's pregnant mistress so he can continue his feckless lifestyle. He then takes up dangerous work as a stunt man to support his new family. Duty and loyalty turn into something deeper.Hilarious description of a stunt man in Japanese film industry. This film is possibly best remembered for it's theme song, a Japanese version of 1920s operetta song "King of Vagabonds".
- DirectorAllen CoulterStarsAdrien BrodyBen AffleckDiane LaneA detective examines the mysterious death of George Reeves, the star of the television series Adventures of Superman (1952).Not really a great classic, the plot is way too predictable, and the writing could have been much better, still isn't actually a stinker either. Lots of too obvious wasted opportunities.
- DirectorDavid MametStarsPhilip Seymour HoffmanWilliam H. MacyRebecca PidgeonA movie crew invades a small town whose residents are all too ready to give up their values for showbiz glitz.A typical ensemble cast comedy, that thinks its smarter than it actually is. The plot development is to put in one word, confused. None of the plot devices are explored through to any sort of an ending, including the main plot. Meaning that at the end of the movie, every single event happening in this movie has NO solution or a real ending, leaving the over all feeling of unfinished, hurried and possibly severely cut and edited film.
- DirectorJoe DanteStarsJohn GoodmanCathy MoriartySimon FentonThe teenage son of a navy sailor newly stationed in Key West gets some excitement with his friends when a small-time film producer comes to town to premiere a kitschy horror film during the Cuban Missile Crisis.Made in early 90s, but has the overwhelming feeling of a typical 80s comedy flick. Not really entertaining or interesting on any level. The one good thing in this movie is John Goodman's performance as a carefree movie mogul who has "visions".
- DirectorSimon CurtisStarsMichelle WilliamsEddie RedmayneKenneth BranaghColin Clark, an employee of Sir Laurence Olivier, documents the tense interactions between Olivier and Marilyn Monroe during the production of The Prince and the Showgirl (1957).Concentrates on Marilyn's troubled life while trying to make "The Prince and the Showgirl". Fails to impress in almost every imaginable way!
- DirectorKôki MitaniStarsKôichi SatôSatoshi TsumabukiEri FukatsuA hustler who gets in trouble with a gang boss in the port town of Sukago agrees to make good with the don by putting him in contact with a mysterious hitman -- an assassin the hustler has no idea how to contact. Instead, he hires an actor to play the role, though the thespian has no idea what he's getting into.Surprisingly good! Strange how much comedy one can stretch from one simple idea.
- DirectorIrwin WinklerStarsRobert De NiroAnnette BeningGeorge WendtReturning to Hollywood 1951 after working in France, a movie director meets McCarthyism head-on.Considering the subject matter, this movie is painfully too obvious at avoiding the real issues and protecting the guilty of these ridiculous witch hunts organized by US government. Still manages to capture the insanity and illegality of the blacklisting during the fascist era of McCarthyism.
- DirectorDoug EllinStarsAdrian GrenierKevin ConnollyJerry FerraraMovie star Vincent Chase, together with his boys Eric, Turtle, and Johnny, are back - and back in business with super agent-turned-studio head Ari Gold on a risky project that will serve as Vince's directorial debut.Pretty much what you would expect. Film making is mainly concentrated around producers tribulations, but this actually manages to be funny at times.
- DirectorStanley DonenGene KellyStarsGene KellyDonald O'ConnorDebbie ReynoldsA silent film star falls for a chorus girl just as he and his delusionally jealous screen partner are trying to make the difficult transition to talking pictures in 1920s Hollywood. As far as musicals go, there aren't many as classic as this. Some of the gags related to the realistic mishaps of the early days of 'talkies' are really honestly funny.
