- DirectorVishal BhardwajStarsAjay DevgnKareena KapoorSaif Ali KhanA politically-minded enforcer's misguided trust in his lieutenant leads him to suspect his wife of infidelity in this adaptation of Shakespeare's 'Othello'.Based on "Othello" from William Shakespeare
Excellent work done by Vishal Bhardwaj. Othello is shown in rural UP/MP. Shows how the fear and insecurities are universal and can be transferred to different time and country. Saif Ali gave the most awesome performance and stole the show in my opinion. - DirectorVishal BhardwajStarsIrrfan KhanTabuPankaj KapurThe intrigue of the Shakespearean tragedy 'Macbeth' is transposed to the Mumbai underworld.Based on "Macbeth" from William Shakespeare
Again an excellent movie made by Vishal Bhardwaj. It felt that Bard himself came and adapted his play to modern day Bombay. - DirectorGulzarStarsSanjeev KumarMoushumi ChatterjeeDeven VermaBased on Shakespeare's 'A Comedy of Errors', this is a story of identical twins (2 pairs) and mistaken identities.Based on "Comedy of Errors" from William Shakespeare
One of my all time favorite comedies. I think the movie was only loosely adapted. I read original work long time ago so can't be too sure. Both the original and adaptation were great! - DirectorDebu SenStarsKishore KumarAsit Kumar SenSurekhaA man and his assistant go on a business trip, which results in a comedy of errors.Based on "Comedy of Errors" from William Shakespeare
This is older and lesser know movie based on "Comedy of Errors" I had seen this movie on doordarshan and remember it to be fun. This is not as well known as Angoor made later by Gulzaar. - DirectorAnurag KashyapStarsAbhay DeolMahie GillKalki KoechlinAfter breaking up with his childhood sweetheart, a young man finds solace in drugs. Meanwhile, a teenage girl is caught in the world of prostitution. Will they be destroyed, or will they find redemption?Based on Bengali Romance novel "Devdas" by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay
Sarat Babu apparently wrote this novel when he was only seventeen. I haven't read the original novel but have what a work! Atleast four Hindi movies have been made on this and IMHO "Dev D" is the best. Anurag Kashyap transformed Bengal into Punjab and Calcutta into Delhi. Excellent work done by Abhay Deol, Mahi Gill and Kalki Koechlin. - DirectorSanjay Leela BhansaliStarsShah Rukh KhanAishwarya Rai BachchanMadhuri DixitAfter his wealthy family prohibits him from marrying the woman he is in love with, Devdas Mukherjee's life spirals further and further out of control as he takes up alcohol and a life of vice to numb the pain.Based on Bengali Romance novel "Devdas" by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay
This was the mega strarrer movie based on Devdas. Movie did well for Aishwarya Rai who acted as Paro and did that with aplomb. Shahrukh Khan didn't do justice to Devdas and Madhuri didn't really sparkle as Chandramukhi. Overall I was disappointed by this version. - DirectorBimal RoyStarsDilip KumarSuchitra SenVyjayanthimalaThe scion of a wealthy landowner family turns to alcohol and self-pity and slowly self-destructs after class differences force him to break off his relationship with his childhood sweetheart.Based on Bengali Romance novel "Devdas" by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay
This was the Dilip Kumar starrer. I have only seen snippets of it. This movie in some ways cemented Dilip Kumar as the tragedy king. Before my time so can't comment much on this. - DirectorP.C. BaruaStarsK.L. SaigalA.H. ShorePahadi SanyalDevdas (Saigal/Barua), son of a zamindar, and Parvati (aka Paro)(Jamuna), his poor neighbour's daughter, are childhood sweethearts. Status and caste differences prevent their marriage and Devdas is sent to Calcutta while Paro is married off to an aged but rich widower. In Calcutta the hero meets the prostitute Chandramukhi (Rajkumari/Chandrabati Devi) but remorse drives him to alcohol and (after a long train journey in which he attempts to run away from himself) he comes to die in front of his true love's house.Based on Bengali Romance novel "Devdas" by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay
This was the original Hindi movie based on the novel. Starring K L Saigal and Jamuna. I haven't seen this movie but mentioning it here to complete the saga. - DirectorRam Gopal VarmaStarsAmitabh BachchanAbhishek BachchanKay Kay MenonSubhash Nagre runs a parallel government in the city where he has a cult following. When his enemies plot to murder him, his son takes charge and stands up against them.Based on "Godfather" by Mario Puzo.
Somewhat loosely adapted on Godfather. Very well done by Amitabh as the Godfather and Abhishek as the young Michael in making. Much better than some of the other films made on this novel. - DirectorFeroz KhanStarsVinod KhannaFeroz KhanAmala AkkineniThe story of Dayavan, a benevolent gangster who dedicates his life to helping those less fortunate than himself.Based on "Godfather" by Mario Puzo.
This movie was a pathetic remake of Tamil hit movie "Nayakan" which in itself was adaptation of Godfather. I don't have much good to say about Dayavan as it was a poorly made remake by Feroz Khan where he lifted scene by scene including a song. - DirectorRajkumar HiraniStarsAamir KhanMadhavanMona SinghTwo friends are searching for their long lost companion. They revisit their college days and recall the memories of their friend who inspired them to think differently, even as the rest of the world called them "idiots".Based on "Five Point Someone" by Chetan Bhagat
Must admit that I find very little common between the movie and the book. There was a controversy where movie folks including Aamir refused to give Chetan Bhagat his due. Movie was a big hit and enjoyable in my opinion. Book was just ok. - DirectorAbhishek KapoorStarsAmit SadhSushant Singh RajputRajkummar RaoThree friends growing up in India at the turn of the millennium set out to open a training academy to produce the country's next cricket stars.Based on "The 3 mistakes of my life" by Chetan Bhagat
Read the book and also watched the movie. Book was nice read but nothing major. Movie didn't do justice to the book. Cricket angle was totally muted in the movie. Love story between Vidhya and the hero was also not done properly. Even though novel was not good movie was worse. - DirectorAbhishek VarmanStarsArjun KapoorAlia BhattAmrita SinghThis movie chronicles how Chetan met his wife and the difficulties they faced due to their cultural differences.A movie based on "2 States - The story of my marriage" by Chetan Bhagat.
Kind of an autobiography by Chetan about his time in IIM A. I haven't read the book but have seen the movie. Movie was kind of ok. I loved the role played by Amrita Singh as the Punjabi mother-in-law. Several of my wife's friends who are Punjabi could see their mother in laws in her. I won't name names! - DirectorVijay AnandStarsDev AnandWaheeda RehmanLeela ChitnisWhen mistaken to be a sage by some villagers, an ex-tour guide reflects on his past and lost love to search for spiritual wisdom to guide the villagers.Based on "The Guide" by R K Narayan
Movie was based on this excellent novel By R K Narayan. It was good but it didn't do justice to the original novel which in my opinion was much better with each character having a shade of grey. - DirectorAbdul Rashid KardarDilip KumarStarsDilip KumarWaheeda RehmanPran SikandA kind-hearted, widowed landlord, Thakur, lives a wealthy lifestyle with his son, Ramesh; daughter, Roopa; and an adopted child, Shankar. Ramesh hates Shankar and often abuses him. Years pass by, Thakur has passed away, and all three children have grown up. While Ramesh visits a stunningly attractive Courtesan, Tara, drinks alcohol, and continues to abuse and mercilessly beat Shankar, who bears this in silence as he and Roopa are in love with each other. When Ramesh finds out that Roopa wants to wed Shankar, he has him severely beaten and thrown off a cliff. He then arranges Roopa's marriage with another wealthy man, Satish, while he continues to romance Tara and even signs over his entire estate and home to her name. Then a few years later, Shankar returns - this time as the wealthy Raja of Belapur - and he all set to compromise with Ramesh and propose to Roopa. He finds out that nothing has changed, Ramesh, though rendered penniless by Tara, still hates him; and Satish is wooing Roopa, is engaged to her and a marriage date has been fixed. Shankar's love is now replaced by vengeance and hate, and all he can think of is destroying the lives of Ramesh, Roopa, Satish and his sister, Mala, and he has several plans which he intends to put to use one by one.Based very loosely on "Wuthering Heights" by Emily Bronte
This novel was recommended to me by Pinky after we go engaged. I enjoyed the novel but same cannot be said about this Dilip Kumar and Waheeda Rehman starrer. - DirectorGurinder ChadhaStarsMartin HendersonAishwarya Rai BachchanNadira BabbarA modern adaptation of Jane Austen's classic novel, Pride and Prejudice, that features the lives of four unmarried daughters in an Indian family.Based on "Pride and Prejudice" by Jane Austen.
Have to admit that I haven't read the novel and the movie was forgettable too. - DirectorPradeep SarkarStarsVidya BalanSaif Ali KhanSanjay DuttThe lifelong romance between Lolita (Balan) and Shekar (Khan) is upset by the arrival of another man.Based on Bengali novel "Porinita" by Sharat Babu
Haven't read the original novel but did enjoy this movie. Vidhya provided an excellent performance. I believe this was her first hindi movie. - DirectorAnil GangulyStarsJeetendraSulakshana PanditVikram MakandarShekar (Jeetendra) and Lalita (Sulakshana Pandit) are neighboring childhood friends. Shekar belongs to rich family whereas Lalita is middle-class girl both of them love each other but hesitated to convey. The remaining story is how the couples childhood dream come true.Based on Bengali novel "Porinita" by Sharat Babu
This movie had Jeetender and Sulakshna Pandit and my first encounter with this subject. I liked this version too. This was more muted than Saif Ali Khan starrer Parineeta. - DirectorMansoor KhanStarsAamir KhanJuhi ChawlaGoga KapoorDespite knowing that their respective families are bitter enemies, Raj and Rashmi fall in love with each other and decide to elope.Based very loosely on "Romeo and Juliet" by William Shakespeare
Not sure if you all will agree with this one. Pinky suggested this and I agree with her. - DirectorChandra Prakash DwivediStarsUrmila MatondkarManoj BajpayeeSanjay SuriIn the days leading up to Partition, a Hindu woman is abducted by a Muslim man. Soon, she finds herself not only forced into marriage, but living in a new country as the borders between India and Pakistan are drawn.Based on novel "Pinjar" from Amrita Pritam.
Haven't seen the movie or read the book. Didn't watch the movie because the topic of partition is very personal to me. Looking forward to doing both now. - DirectorDeepa MehtaStarsAamir KhanNandita DasRahul KhannaIt's 1947 and the borderlines between India and Pakistan are being drawn. A young girl witnesses tragedy as her ayah (nanny) is caught between the love of two men and the rising tide of political and religious violence.Based upon Bapsi Sidhwa's novel, "Cracking India"
Was too scared to watch this movie as the topic of partition is very personal. Will gather courage and watch this movie and read the book too. - DirectorDeepa MehtaStarsLisa RayJohn AbrahamSeema BiswasSet in colonial India against Gandhi's rise to power, it's the story of 8-year-old Chuyia, who is widowed and sent to a home to live in penitence; once there, Chuyia's feisty presence deeply affects the lives of the other residents.Author Bapsi Sidhwa wrote the 2006 novel based upon the film! So this is reverse of what we are doing.
I have only seen the movie and it is an excellent movie to watch. Lisa Ray and Seema Biswas have acted beautifully. - DirectorSanjay Leela BhansaliStarsRanbir KapoorSonam KapoorSalman KhanTwo souls arrive in a small town, one on vacation, the other to meet a lover. They spend the most magical dream-like days of their lives in that town... with each other.Based on Fyodor Dostoevsky's short story "White Nights"
Haven't read the book but could make out that movie was slow and painful because it was trying to adapt to a story. Not a good effort by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. In my opinion Vishal Bhardwaj and Anurag Kashyap are the leaders of adapting literature to movies. - DirectorSudhendu RoyStarsSwarup DuttJaya BachchanSuresh ChatwalAnoop marries Minoo, a childish girl who doesn't understand her relationship with Anoop. While returning back to Calcutta, he is compelled to leave her with her mother.Based on the short story named 'Samapti' (The End) by Rabindranath Tagore
Didn't read the original story but saw the movie on Doordarshan long ago and was impressed by it. - DirectorRituparno GhoshStarsAishwarya Rai BachchanPrasenjit ChatterjeeRaima SenBinodini is a young widow who lives with a woman and her son, Mahendra, who had once refused to marry her. Their lives are thrown into disarray when there is deceit and adultery between Binodini, Mahendra, his wife and his friend.based on the novel "Chokher Bali" by Rabindranath Tagore
Saw only the movie and was extremely impressed by Aishwarya Rai. She emoted pain and sensuality equally well. Good movie if you haven't seen it.
