North American Actors Who Do British Accents

by Miles-10 | created - 10 Sep 2013 | updated - 23 Jul 2022 | Public

Sometimes, TV, movie and stage actors are called on to use accents other than their native accents. British actors have a reputation for doing American accents better (or with more confidence/hubris) than American actors do British ones, but some North American actors have been accused of doing serviceable British accents. There are always going to be differences of opinion about whether an actor’s accent works, and some audiences just don’t like accent switching under any circumstances. Here are some North American actors who have attempted a sustained British Isles dialect (or two):

1. Gillian Anderson

Actress | The X Files

Gillian Anderson was born in Chicago, Illinois, to Rosemary Alyce (Lane), a computer analyst, and Homer Edward Anderson III, who owned a film post-production company. Gillian started her career as a member of an amateur actor group while at high school. In 1987, her love of the theatre took her to ...

Gillian Anderson was born in Chicago, Illinois, USA but lived in London from 1970 to 1979. Her accent skills are on display in the BBC productions of such Charles Dickens classics as “Bleak House” as well as in “The Fall”, which is set in Northern Ireland. More recently, she played a sex therapist in the Netflix series "Sex Education", which was filmed in Wales.

2. Marlon Brando

Actor | Apocalypse Now

Marlon Brando is widely considered the greatest movie actor of all time, rivaled only by the more theatrically oriented Laurence Olivier in terms of esteem. Unlike Olivier, who preferred the stage to the screen, Brando concentrated his talents on movies after bidding the Broadway stage adieu in ...

Marlon Brando was born in Omaha, Nebraska, USA but lived in New York, California and the South Pacific. He has played Englishmen in such films as “Mutiny on the Bounty” (1962).

3. Bette Davis

Actress | All About Eve

Ruth Elizabeth Davis was born April 5, 1908, in Lowell, Massachusetts, to Ruth Augusta (Favor) and Harlow Morrell Davis, a patent attorney. Her parents divorced when she was 10. She and her sister were raised by their mother. Her early interest was dance. To Bette, dancers led a glamorous life, but...

I am generally listing actors who are alive or who only passed away recently, but I must make an exception for Ms. Davis. Born in Massachusetts, she generally aimed for an accent somewhere in between America and the British Isles, but she played Brits in at least two movies: "The Virgin Queen" (1955) and "The Nanny" (1965).

4. Alexis Denisof

Actor | Guardians of the Galaxy

Alexis Denisof was born on February 25, 1966 in Salisbury, Maryland, USA. He is an actor, known for Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), The Avengers (2012) and Angel (1999). He has been married to Alyson Hannigan since October 11, 2003. They have two children.

Alexis Denisof was born in Salisbury, Maryland, USA and might not be a very well-known actor, but when he portrayed a British vampire hunter on the “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” TV series and its spin-off, “Angel,” his accent received high praise. As often seems to be the case with Americans who do a good British accent, Denisof lived and studied in the UK for several years.

5. Johnny Depp

Actor | Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

John Christopher "Johnny" Depp II was born on June 9, 1963 in Owensboro, Kentucky, to Betty Sue Palmer (née Wells), a waitress, and John Christopher Depp, a civil engineer. He was raised in Florida. He dropped out of school when he was 15, and fronted a series of music-garage bands, including one ...

Johnny Depp was definitely born in the USA, in Owensboro, Kentucky, and he was raised in Florida. His “Pirates of the Caribbean” accent may not be everyone’s cup of tea since he certainly hams it up, but that seems to have been his intention.

6. Peter Dinklage

Actor | Game of Thrones

Peter Dinklage is an American actor. Since his breakout role in The Station Agent (2003), he has appeared in numerous films and theatre plays. Since 2011, Dinklage has portrayed Tyrion Lannister in the HBO series Game of Thrones (2011) . For this he won an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a...

"In the eyes of his father, every dwarf is a bastard." So says Tyrion Lannister, played by Peter Dinklage in "Game of Thrones". Dinklage was also in both the British and American versions of "Death at a Funeral" in neither of which did he use a British accent, as did his American co-star Alan Tudyk in the British version (see below). Dinklage proves in "Thrones" that he could have.

7. Robert Downey Jr.

Actor | Iron Man

Robert Downey Jr. has evolved into one of the most respected actors in Hollywood. With an amazing list of credits to his name, he has managed to stay new and fresh even after over four decades in the business.

Downey was born April 4, 1965 in Manhattan, New York, the son of writer, director and ...

Robert Downey Jr., was born in New York, New York, USA the son of a film director. (I’ll let you guess his name.) His portrayal of Sherlock Holmes is so upper-class that, in a different way from Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow character, Downey seems to be deliberately having fun with it.

8. Enver Gjokaj

Actor | Stone

Enver Leif Gjokaj is an American film and television actor. He is known for his roles as Victor in Joss Whedon's science fiction television series Dollhouse and as Agent Daniel Sousa on Agent Carter (2015). Gjokaj was born in Orange County, California. His father is Albanian, and his mother is ...

An actor who can do just about anything, Mr. Gjokaj has often been called upon to do accents. In the series "Dollhouse" (2009) he played characters of various nationalities including a Brit with a serviceable accent.

9. Bruce Greenwood

Actor | Star Trek

Bruce Greenwood was born on August 12, 1956 in Noranda, Québec, Canada. He is an actor and producer, known for Star Trek (2009), Thirteen Days (2000) and I, Robot (2004). He has been married to Susan Devlin since 1985. They have one child.

Bruce Greenwood was born in Noranda, Quebec, Canada but has lived extensively in the United States as well as Switzerland. He played a Brit in “Being Julia” (2004).

10. Michael C. Hall

Actor | Dexter

Michael C. Hall was born in Raleigh, North Carolina, to Janice (Styons), a guidance counselor, and William Carlyle Hall, who worked for IBM. Michael is a graduate of NYU's Master of Fine Arts program in acting. He is known for the titular character "Dexter" in Dexter (2006) and as mortician "David ...

"The Guardian" writes of Hall's accent in the drama, "Safe", "If you heard it out of context and were asked where it was from you would say Britain. Where in Britain, though – geographically, in the social hierarchy – would be tougher to pinpoint. It’s like a generic British accent that Hall... has produced. Technically sound but synthetic, rather than living-breathing real." This seems harsh, although, despite being an American, I think I can tell that it sounds like it belongs to at least a slightly lower class than the character should be. Otherwise, it is a convincing British accent to most Americans and - perhaps without saying much - better than the "British accents" of some of the other actors on this list. At least Hall's accent in "Safe" seems to be consistent.

11. Angelina Jolie

Actress | Maleficent

Angelina Jolie is an Academy Award-winning actress who rose to fame after her role in Girl, Interrupted (1999), playing the title role in the "Lara Croft" blockbuster movies, as well as Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005), Wanted (2008), Salt (2010) and Maleficent (2014). Off-screen, Jolie has become ...

Angelina Jolie was born in Los Angeles, California, USA, but her British accent in the role of the adventurous Lara Croft (“Lara Croft: Tomb Raider”) has its admirers. Then again, she had been married to British actor Jonny Lee Miller.

12. Stana Katic

Actress | Castle

Stana Katic recently starred in the TV series, Absentia, streaming on Amazon. It's a thriller-drama produced by Sony Pictures Television. Upon debut it was one of Amazon's top-ten most popular programs.

Stana's feature film work includes, CBGB, Big Sur, The Spirit, Feast of Love, The Double and Bond...

She played real-life, World War Two, British spy master Vera Atkins in "A Call to Spy" (2019). She does several other accents including Irish. She was born in Ontario, Canada of Serbian parents.

13. John Malkovich

Actor | Being John Malkovich

John Gavin Malkovich was born in Christopher, Illinois, to Joe Anne (Choisser), who owned a local newspaper, and Daniel Leon Malkovich, a state conservation director. His paternal grandparents were Croatian. In 1976, Malkovich joined Chicago's Steppenwolf Theatre, newly founded by his friend Gary ...

In his TV series "Crossbones" he uses a pretty stagey British accent that I doubt the historical Blackbeard whom he portrays would have used, but he maintains it consistently.

14. James Marsters

Actor | Buffy the Vampire Slayer

James graduated from Davis High School and attended Juilliard, the Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts, and the American Conservatory Theatre. After spending ten years doing stage work he finally moved to L.A. to pursue a career in film and television. After appearing in several guest roles...

James Marsters was born in Greenville, California, USA but aside from studying British accents on his own, he says his accent as a British vampire on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” was influenced by co-starring British actor Anthony Head.

15. Tatiana Maslany

Actress | Orphan Black

Tatiana Gabrielle Maslany was born September 22, 1985 in Regina, Saskatchewan, to Renate, a translator, and Dan, a woodworker. She graduated from Dr. Martin LeBoldus High school in 2003. She was a well respected student, and participated as often as possible in school productions. She is well known...

Most of the actors on this list are U.S. citizens, but I have labeled it "North American", and, so, the breath-takingly talented Ms. Maslany definitely belongs on it. British accents – from several different regions – are just a few of her many, many accents.

16. James Maxwell

Actor | An Enemy of the State

James Maxwell was born on March 23, 1929 in Worcester, Massachusetts, USA. He was an actor and writer, known for An Enemy of the State (1965), The Portrait of a Lady (1968) and World Theatre (1959). He was married to Avril Elgar. He died on August 18, 1995 in London, England, UK.

This would be too obvious if Maxwell were not so (too) little-known. Born in my hometown of Worcester, Massachusetts, USA, and educated for a time in Pennsylvania, he transplanted himself to the UK as a young man and studied the theater arts there. (See Trivia under his IMDb listing.) So, naturally, long before the time of his death in 1995, he could sound like an Englishman because he had become one.

17. Gwyneth Paltrow

Actress | Shakespeare in Love

Gwyneth Kate Paltrow was born in Los Angeles, the daughter of noted producer and director Bruce Paltrow and Tony Award-winning actress Blythe Danner. Her father was from a Jewish family, while her mother is of mostly German descent. When Gwyneth was eleven, the family moved to Massachusetts, where ...

18. Natalie Portman

Actress | Black Swan

Natalie Portman is the first person born in the 1980s to have won the Academy Award for Best Actress (for Black Swan (2010)).

She was born in Israel and raised in the U.S. state of New York. She learned the English accent that she used to play Evey in "V for Vendetta" from Barbara Berkery and practiced it with Gwyneth Paltrow.

19. Chloë Sevigny

Actress | We Are Who We Are

Chloë Sevigny is an Academy Award-nominated and Golden Globe-winning actress and director who is known for her groundbreaking work across film, television and theatre. Sevigny has spent her career working with innovative and revolutionary filmmakers and artists including Lars von Trier, Jim ...

Chloe Sevigny was born in Massachusetts, USA raised in Connecticut and New York, and visited Europe late in her youth, none of which seems to be enough to explain her accent in the role of British assassin, Mia, in the British series, "Hit & Miss".

20. Meryl Streep

Actress | Out of Africa

Considered by many critics to be the greatest living actress, Meryl Streep has been nominated for the Academy Award an astonishing 21 times, and has won it three times. Meryl was born Mary Louise Streep in 1949 in Summit, New Jersey, to Mary Wolf (Wilkinson), a commercial artist, and Harry William ...

Meryl Streep was born in Summit, New Jersey, USA and received critical accolades for her role as Lady Margaret Thatcher in “Iron Lady”.

21. Alan Tudyk

Actor | Rogue One

Alan Tudyk was born in El Paso, Texas, but grew up in Plano, where he attended Plano Sr. High. In 1990, he went on to study drama at Lon Morris Jr. College. While there, he was awarded the Academic Excellence Award for Drama. He was also named Most Likely to Succeed and Sophomore Beau. During this ...

In "Death at a Funeral" (2007), American-born actor Alan Tudyk does a very good middle-of-the-road English accent. He sounds as if he comes from the same social background as the characters played by most of his native-British co-stars. I believe that Tudyk can do almost anything. He is that good.

22. Liv Tyler

Actress | Armageddon

Liv Tyler is an actress of international renown and has been a familiar face on our screens for over two decades and counting. She began modelling at the age of fourteen before pursuing a career in acting. After making her film debut in Bruce Beresford's Silent Fall, she was cast by fledgling ...

Though born in New York City, she played Anne Vaux in the 2017 BBC production "Gunpowder", which is about the 1605 terrorist plot to blow up King James I and most of Parliament. Anne Vaux was a cousin of one of the conspirators, Robin Catesby.

23. Forest Whitaker

Actor | The Last King of Scotland

Forest Steven Whitaker has packaged a king-size talent into his hulking 6' 2", 220 lb. frame. He won an Academy Award for his performance as Ugandan dictator Idi Amin in the film The Last King of Scotland (2006), and has also won a Golden Globe and a BAFTA. He is the fourth African-American male to...

Forest Whitaker was born in Longview, Texas, USA. His role as a British soldier in “The Crying Game” led many British viewers to be stunned when they later learned that he is thoroughly American.

24. Philip Winchester

Actor | Strike Back

Philip Winchester was born on March 24, 1981 in Montana, USA. He is an actor and producer, known for Strike Back (2010), The Player (2015) and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (1999). He has been married to Megan Coughlin since 2008. They have two children.

On stage he has acted with Ian McKellen in a Royal Shakespeare Company production of "King Lear". He has played British military intelligence operative Sgt. Michael Stonebridge on the series "Strike Back".

Actress | Chicago

Renée Kathleen Zellweger was born on April 25, 1969, in Katy, Texas, Her mother, Kjellfrid Irene (Andreassen), is a Norwegian-born former nurse and midwife, of Norwegian, Kven (Finnish), and Swedish descent. Her father, Emil Erich Zellweger, is a Swiss-born engineer. The two married in 1963. Renée ...

Renee Zellwegger was born in Katy, Texas, USA but played a Brit in “Bridget Jones's Diary” in which, it has been suggested, if her accent sounded fake, those of many of the British-born actors in the film did, too. Was this deliberate, then?
