Westerns I've watched: from best to worst
I have included some movies that usually (if ever) are not labeled as a Western, but that I think that they could be. In my opinion, there is no sense to consider a genre label only applies to films which stories happen in the United States of the XIXth century or during Mexican Revolution.
A smaller list about "political Westerns" can be seen here.

- DirectorClint EastwoodStarsClint EastwoodGene HackmanMorgan FreemanRetired Old West gunslinger William Munny reluctantly takes on one last job, with the help of his old partner Ned Logan and a young man, The "Schofield Kid."One of the the masterpieces made by Clint Eastwood as a director. A mature review of his own history as a star of Western. There was no perfect unbeatable superhero in Old West...
- DirectorSergio LeoneStarsClint EastwoodEli WallachLee Van CleefA bounty hunting scam joins two men in an uneasy alliance against a third in a race to find a fortune in gold buried in a remote cemetery.Iconic. The best duel (truel?) ever. The paragon spaghetti Western.
- DirectorSergio LeoneStarsHenry FondaCharles BronsonClaudia CardinaleA mysterious stranger with a harmonica joins forces with a notorious desperado to protect a beautiful widow from a ruthless assassin working for the railroad.Amazing review of the history of the genre, perfect control of every aspect of moviemaking.
- DirectorSergio LeoneStarsRod SteigerJames CoburnRomolo ValliA low-life bandit and an I.R.A. explosives expert rebel against the government and become heroes of the Mexican Revolution. What a Zapata Western! Sergio Leone is a genius directing Westerns. This underrated movie is even better than the two first films of the dollars trilogy.
- DirectorSergio CorbucciStarsFranco NeroTomas MilianFernando ReyA Swedish arms dealer and a Mexican peon team up to rescue the intellectual leader of the Revolutionary cause, while taking part in numerous misadventures along the way.Very nice Zapata Western! Tomas Milian is very good as "El Vasco", but Franco Nero is amazing, probably in his best role, perhaps slighly better than Il Polaco in "Il Mercenario" and much better than Django. There is something of Blondie-Tuco in Petersen-Vasco relationship. In my opinion, "Compañeros" is better than "Il mercenario" most of the time, but the end of the latter is better than the way the former finishes.
- DirectorKevin CostnerStarsKevin CostnerMary McDonnellGraham GreeneLieutenant John Dunbar, assigned to a remote western Civil War outpost, finds himself engaging with a neighbouring Sioux settlement, causing him to question his own purpose.Beautiful movie! It proves that a Western may show who were the assassins in Old West.
- DirectorArthur PennStarsDustin HoffmanFaye DunawayChief Dan GeorgeJack Crabb, looking back from extreme old age, tells of his life being raised by Native Americans and fighting with General Custer.A movie that is part funny, part tragic. A character who is part an adopted Cheyenne, part a white man doing the most different things to survive. Besides Dustin Hoffman's "Little Big Man" Jack Crabb, the other characters are also amazing, both the fictious (Mrs. Pendrake, Chief Old Lodge Skins, Mr. Merriweather, Olga, Younger Bear etc.) and the historical ones (such as Wild Bill Hickok and General Custer).
- DirectorWalter SallesStarsJosé DumontRodrigo SantoroRita AssemanyWhen ordered by his father to avenge the death of his older brother, a young man questions the tradition of violence between two rival families.A great movie that does not use to be called Western, but it shares the traits of the genre (if you consider, as I think that is the correct, that it is not limited to the West of the United States in the second half of XIXth century), perhaps except for the relatively small number of murders.
- DirectorEthan CoenJoel CoenStarsJeff BridgesMatt DamonHailee SteinfeldA stubborn teenager enlists the help of a tough U.S. Marshal to track down her father's murderer.Great. Even better than the original one. The noises of the horse are amazing!
- DirectorAlejandro G. IñárrituStarsLeonardo DiCaprioTom HardyWill PoulterA frontiersman on a fur trading expedition in the 1820s fights for survival after being mauled by a bear and left for dead by members of his own hunting team. What a great production! Cinematography is amazing, showing all the beauty and the danger of nature. Camera movements and editing are also very skillful. Leonardo DiCaprio in the main role, a trekker who knows both nature and Indians deeply, and Tom Hardy as despicable Fitzgerald lead the great cast. The brutal story has the same spirit of another snowy Western that depicts the fight for surviving, Sydney Pollack and Robert Redford's "Jeremiah Johnson", but with some very realistic scenes that probably could not be made in the 70's. The spectator feels suffocated. The only drawback of the fabulous production is that the unrealistic recovery of DiCaprio's character does not fit to the harsh and much more realistic tone of the movie.
- DirectorRobert HosseinStarsMichèle MercierRobert HosseinGuido LollobrigidaA melancholic gunfighter is drawn into a vengeful and tragic kidnapping plot by his widowed ex-lover.Very stylish French-spoken Spaghetti Western. You can hear all the noises, filmmaking tries different angles, everything makes this movie very special, though following the spaghetti tradition of typical soundtrack, close-caption on the faces, dusty environment, and a revenge story. There is a scene, directed by Sergio Leone, which is fantastic.
- DirectorTed PostStarsClint EastwoodInger StevensPat HingleWhen an innocent man barely survives a lynching, he returns as a lawman determined to bring the vigilantes to justice.Excellent Western on problems of Justice, due process, vigilantism and revenge. Beautiful soundtrack, good acting.
- DirectorCarlos CoimbraStarsMilton RodríguezVanja OricoMaurício do VallePedro Boiadeiro goes after a gang of cangaceiros to avenge the brutal rape and death of his newly-wed wife.
- DirectorPaul Thomas AndersonStarsDaniel Day-LewisPaul DanoCiarán HindsA story of family, religion, hatred, oil and madness, focusing on a turn-of-the-century prospector in the early days of the business.I had never thought about this excellent movie as a Western until I saw it included in a "favorite Wersterns" list in IMDB. The story happens in the beginning of XXth century and not in the XIXth, but I agree that it makes sense to include it (indeed, the stories in the Zapata Westerns also happen in the XXth century, but in Mexico and not in USA). It is harsh and rural enough.
- DirectorEnzo G. CastellariStarsFranco NeroWilliam BergerOlga KarlatosA half-breed ex-Union gunfighter attempts to protect his plague-ridden hometown from being overridden by his racist half-brothers and a Confederate tyrant. The present meets the past in the dustiest Western ever.
- DirectorFred ZinnemannStarsGary CooperGrace KellyThomas MitchellA town Marshal, despite the disagreements of his newlywed bride and the townspeople around him, must face a gang of deadly killers alone at "high noon" when the gang leader, an outlaw he "sent up" years ago, arrives on the noon train. The best of the old Westerns from the United States.
- DirectorWilliam A. WellmanStarsHenry FondaDana AndrewsMary Beth HughesWhen a posse captures three men suspected of killing a local farmer, they become strongly divided over whether or not to lynch the men.Excellent movie about an illegal judgment in old West. Hatred is enemy of justice, even if you have majority. This message makes this Western from 1943 a timeless film.
- DirectorSergio CorbucciStarsFranco NeroTony MusanteFranco GiacobiniA greedy Polish mercenary helps a mine worker and a peasant girl lead a revolution against the Mexican Government, all while being pursued by an American rival. This funny, colorful and violent Zapata Western is by far the best film by Corbucci I have watched besides "Compañeros". Best story, best characters and best scenes than other famous movies from this spaghetti Western diretor, such as "The Great Silence" and "Django".
- DirectorSergio LeoneStarsClint EastwoodGian Maria VolontèMarianne KochA wandering gunfighter plays two rival families against each other in a town torn apart by greed, pride, and revenge.
- DirectorJuliano DornellesKleber Mendonça FilhoStarsBárbara ColenThomas AquinoSilvero PereiraAfter the death of her grandmother, Teresa comes home to her matriarchal village in a near-future Brazil to find a succession of sinister events that mobilizes all of its residents. Not a typical Western, as it happens in Northeastern Brazil and in the future, and not in US in the past.
- DirectorJohn SturgesDuilio ColettiStarsCharles BronsonJill IrelandMarcel BozzuffiA runaway teenager and a mixed-race horse breeder strike an unlikely friendship in the context of common hardships.Great dialogs, sensible film, amazing horse footage, good acting, exciting action.
- DirectorDon SiegelStarsJohn WayneLauren BacallRon HowardA dying gunfighter spends his last days looking for a way to die with a minimum of pain and a maximum of dignity. The best of all John Wayne's movies I have watched. Great casting, indeed. A movie on expectations and feelings, besides good action.
- DirectorEthan CoenJoel CoenStarsTim Blake NelsonWillie WatsonClancy BrownSix tales of life and violence in the Old West, following a singing gunslinger, a bank robber, a traveling impresario, an elderly prospector, a wagon train, and a perverse pair of bounty hunters.
- DirectorGiulio PetroniStarsLee Van CleefJohn Phillip LawMario BregaA young gunfighter forms a tenuous alliance with an aging ex-outlaw to track down and eliminate the bandits who killed his family, till the surprising end.
- DirectorClint EastwoodStarsClint EastwoodSondra LockeChief Dan GeorgeMissouri farmer Josey Wales joins a Confederate guerrilla unit and winds up on the run from the Union soldiers who murdered his family.
- DirectorClint EastwoodStarsClint EastwoodMichael MoriartyCarrie SnodgressA mysterious preacher protects a humble prospector village from a greedy mining company trying to encroach on their land.
- DirectorClint EastwoodStarsClint EastwoodSondra LockeGeoffrey LewisAn idealistic, modern-day cowboy struggles to keep his Wild West show afloat in the face of hard luck and waning interest.Great film. Is it a Western?
- DirectorSydney PollackStarsRobert RedfordWill GeerDelle BoltonA mountain man who wishes to live the life of a hermit becomes the unwilling object of a long vendetta by the Crow tribe and proves to be a match for their warriors in single combat on the early frontier.Astonishing photography, nice characters, beautiful "family" relationship, great challenges from the mountains represented by cold, beasts and Indians. A very good film.
- DirectorTonino ValeriiStarsTerence HillHenry FondaJean MartinA young, easy-going gunman worships and competes with a famed gunfighter, insisting that he must face down a gang of 150 outlaws before he can retire.Humour is often present in spaghetti Westerns. In this movie the comedy side reaches its highest point. Nobody reminds a lot Trinity, except for the dirt.
- DirectorGregor JordanStarsHeath LedgerOrlando BloomGeoffrey RushAn innocent man becomes one of the most wanted criminals the world has ever known.Great Australian Western movie. Showing the agression Australian people suffered, it reminds politically some excellent films about Irish resistance against British opression, such as "Michael Collins", "The Boxer", and "The Wind That Shakes the Barley".
- DirectorTom GriesStarsCharlton HestonJoan HackettDonald PleasenceAging cowboy Will Penny gets a line camp job on a large cattle spread and finds his isolated cabin is already occupied by an abandoned woman traveler and her young son.
- DirectorSidney J. FurieStarsMarlon BrandoAnjanette ComerJohn SaxonMan tries to recover a horse stolen from him by a Mexican bandit.Very well done movie, very well filmed. In spite of being a movie from US, "The Appaloosa" reminds a lot the spaghetti Westerns from those 60's, much more than the classic Westerns from the USA from previous decades.
- DirectorMartin RittStarsPaul NewmanFredric MarchRichard BooneJohn Russell, disdained by his "respectable" fellow stagecoach passengers because he was raised by Native Americans, becomes their only hope for survival when they are set upon by outlaws. The first part of the film, from the very beginning until the trip starts, is simply perfect. My favorite scenes are the one in which the main character is in the bar with two Apache fellows and the one in which intimidating Grimes gets his ticket for the stagecoach. If the movie had kept in the same path this would be one of the best Westerns ever made. It did not, though it is still a good Western. Both Paul Newman and Richard Boone did a very good job. Filmmaking is also remarkable, a very careful work.
- DirectorJohn FordStarsJames StewartJohn WayneVera MilesA senator returns to a Western town for the funeral of an old friend and tells the story of his origins.Politics and the Press in violent old West.
- DirectorEnzo BarboniStarsTerence HillBud SpencerSteffen ZachariasA lazy, unorthodox gunfighter and his portly, horse-thieving brother defend a Mormon settlement from a land-grabbing Major, a Mexican bandit, and their henchmen. The dirty, lazy and supernaturally fast gunslinger and glutton called Trinità is a very charismatic character. His half-brother Bambino, who reminds Popeye's Brutus, is also nice. Funny spaghetti Western.
- DirectorSergio LeoneStarsClint EastwoodLee Van CleefGian Maria VolontèTwo bounty hunters with the same intentions team up to track down a gang of outlaws led by a psychotic Mexican bandit, who is plotting an audacious bank robbery. In my opinion, it is the worst Western directed by Sergio Leone. Still, it is a very nice film!
- DirectorElliot SilversteinStarsJane FondaLee MarvinMichael CallanA young schoolteacher turns into an outlaw to avenge her murdered father.Very funny and cute, with Nat King Cole singing!
- DirectorMel BrooksStarsCleavon LittleGene WilderSlim PickensIn order to ruin a western town, a corrupt politician appoints a black Sheriff, who promptly becomes his most formidable adversary.Hilarious parody, also important because of the racial question. The first black sheriff ever and the fastest guslinger in the history of Western genre of films form a terrific pair, don't they?
- DirectorGeorge P. CosmatosKevin JarreStarsKurt RussellVal KilmerSam ElliottA successful lawman's plans to retire anonymously in Tombstone, Arizona are disrupted by the kind of outlaws he was famous for eliminating.Another formidable pair: Kurt Russell's bad-ass sheriff and the amazing gunman and bohemian gambler portrayed by Val Kilmer. Who else would challenge the "Cowboys"? What a nice movie: intense and very well made.
- DirectorJohn MacleanStarsKodi Smit-McPheeCaren PistoriusAorere PakiA young Scottish man travels across America in pursuit of the woman he loves, attracting the attention of an outlaw who is willing to serve as a guide.Well done and original western, with beautiful colors, modern and classical at once.
- DirectorJames HuthStarsJean DujardinMichaël YounSylvie TestudFearless gunslinger Lucky Luke is ordered by the President to bring peace to Daisy Town.Good movie. Funny, well made, beautiful photography, nice story, cool costumes, great adaptation of the famous character, excellent parody of spaghetti Westerns.
- DirectorGore VerbinskiStarsJohnny DeppArmie HammerWilliam FichtnerNative American warrior Tonto recounts the untold tales that transformed John Reid, a man of the law, into a legend of justice.Very funny, great action, it is strange that a great Disney movie with Johnny Depp has had so little success. It is an excellent reboot for the classical character, much better than the original one (from TV; indeed the first version was on radio). Depp's Tonto, particularly, is shown as a much stronger character than the version of the native American from more than a half century ago. Besides the good story and nice characters, this movie is also visualy impressive. The film shows nearly the same plot of the 1949 first TV episode "Enter the Lone Ranger": the origin of the Lone Ranger and of his relationship with Tonto. This version from 2013 is by far better, with no possible comparison.
- DirectorHoward HawksArthur RossonStarsJohn WayneMontgomery CliftJoanne DruDunson leads a cattle drive, the culmination of over 14 years of work, to its destination in Missouri. But his tyrannical behavior along the way causes a mutiny, led by his adopted son.An archetypical Western. Trust depends on a peculiar game of bravery and intimidation. Taking risks is always part of this game of men and cattle. Fear and punishment are the law. John Wayne is an authoritarian and stubborn cowboy and gunman. There are quite nice characters - besides Wayne's Tom Dunson we may mention three others, each one representing one archetype: good handsome gunman Matt, funny elder Groot and arrogant dangerous Cherry Balance. It is very well filmed too, with impressive cattle footage.
- DirectorCharles ChaplinStarsCharles ChaplinMack SwainTom MurrayA prospector goes to the Klondike during the 1890s gold rush in hopes of making his fortune, and is smitten with a girl he sees in a dance hall. This classic movie has many traits of a Western despite usually not being thought as one. Though, if it were a more typical film fitting this genre it could be better placed in this list.
- DirectorHeitor DhaliaStarsWagner MouraSophie CharlotteMatheus NachtergaeleA journey to the biggest open mining of the contemporary age. It's 1978 and friends Juliano and Joaquim leave Rio de Janeiro in search of their dream of striking it rich. Like thousands of other men, both get to the Amazon Rainforest full of hope and illusion. But routine in the mines changes everything and the obsession of wealth and power destroys them. Juliano becomes a gangster. Joaquim leaves all his values behind. This is a story about golden fever, greed and violence, a great friendship and its end.It can be seen as a contemporary Western about recent Brazilian history. It could be better placed in this list, but I avoided it because it is far from a typical film of this genre.
- DirectorSergio RezendeStarsJosé WilkerMarieta SeveroJonas BlochBiography of Brazilian congressman Tenório Cavalcanti, who used to appear in public carrying a machine-gun, and wearing a black cloak.Another very nice Brazilian film which can be seen as a contemporary Western, although not a typical one. The very beginning fits fully the label, except for happening in dusty Northeast Brazil and not in USA or México. Afterwards, near Rio de Janeiro but in violent and also dusty town Duque de Caxias, major part of the story happens. Not only the political revenge and murder story is similar to recurrent ones in Westerns, but also filmmaking shares some traits of spaghetti Western, such as the zoom in the angry face of protagonist Tenório Cavalcanti, brilliantly portrayed by José Wilker.
- DirectorGore VerbinskiStarsJohnny DeppIsla FisherTimothy OlyphantRango is an ordinary chameleon who accidentally winds up in the town of Dirt, a lawless outpost in the Wild West in desperate need of a new sheriff.Fantastic animation, excellent parody of both elements and stories present in Westerns. There are some really brilliant instants along the film, and also very funny references to classical movies of the genre. It is not perfect only because the pace does not sustain itself in its best all the time.
- DirectorAng LeeStarsJake GyllenhaalHeath LedgerMichelle WilliamsEnnis and Jack are two shepherds who develop a sexual and emotional relationship. Their relationship becomes complicated when both of them get married to their respective girlfriends.I am not sure if this excellent film could be labeled as a (contemporary) Western. It would possibly be better ranked in this list if it fit more cleary in the genre.
- DirectorDon SiegelStarsClint EastwoodShirley MacLaineManolo FábregasWhen a former Civil War soldier saves a nun from a gang of bandits, they team up to help the Mexicans in their war against the French.Very nice Zapata Western set in the second French intervention in Mexico. One of the five films of the partnership Don Siegel-Clint Eastwood, the only Western of them.
- DirectorJ. Lee ThompsonStarsCharles BronsonJack WardenWill SampsonAt the closing of 1874 a haunted, dying Wild Bill Hickok teams up with a grieving Crazy Horse to hunt a murderous albino buffalo.Imagine something like "Jaws" but in the Old West. That is "The White Buffalo", a very interesting Western in which a famous historical character, Wild Bill Hickok, has the leading role, searching for the resolution of his quest together with also not fictional Crazy Horse and funny elder Charlie Zane. Nice scenario, costumes, acting, action, horror feeling, nightmare scenes. There is a variety of interesting sets: muddy, crowded, rocky, snowy...
- DirectorHal RoachStarsHarold LloydMildred DavisNoah YoungBlase eastern boy is shipped off to a ranch in the 'wild west ' by his father.Hilarious silent short film.
- DirectorSidney PoitierJoseph SargentStarsSidney PoitierHarry BelafonteRuby DeeA wagon master and a con-man preacher help freed slaves dogged by cheap-labor agents out West.Great political Western on the black question, with a charismatic duo in the leading roles.
- DirectorHenry HathawayStarsDean MartinRobert MitchumInger StevensThe players in an ongoing poker game are being mysteriously killed off, one by one.
- DirectorRichard DonnerStarsMel GibsonJodie FosterJames GarnerBret Maverick, needing money for a poker tournament, faces various comic mishaps and challenges, including a charming woman thief.Mel Gibson plays an amazing Maverick, Jodie Foster is wonderful in her role, there are many interesting cameos with stars from old Westerns and actors from previous Richard Donner's films, the story is entertaining and full of twists, and cinematography is also beautiful.
- DirectorRon HowardStarsAlden EhrenreichWoody HarrelsonEmilia ClarkeDuring an adventure in the criminal underworld, Han Solo meets his future co-pilot Chewbacca and Lando Calrissian years before joining the Rebel Alliance. It is like a space Western. It would be better placed in this list if it were a "true" Western.
- DirectorMarcelo GalvãoStarsMaria de MedeirosThaila AyalaDiogo MorgadoA Brazilian western about Cabeleira, a feared killer living in the countryside of Pernambuco State in the 40's.Brazilian Western which is held in Brazilian Northeast and has all the traits of the genre. Very nice!
- DirectorNikita MikhalkovStarsYuriy BogatyryovAnatoliy SolonitsynSergey ShakurovSet during the Civil War between the Reds and the Whites that followed the 1917 revolution in RussiaNice and important Soviet Ostern. The reds fight the whites who robbed the train. Excelent cinematography. Brylov is a quite nice character, who reminds me spaghetti Western best ones. The only problem is that the interesting story gests confusing in some moments.
- DirectorGiorgio FerroniStarsGiuliano GemmaIda GalliPierre CressoyAfter the Civil War, ex-Confederate officer returns home where he gets embroiled in local feuds involving an unscrupulous strongman and his hired henchmen.Banks are banks, today or in the Old West. A good spaghetti with red sauce.
- DirectorTonino ValeriiStarsGiuliano GemmaWarren VandersMaría CuadraIn Dallas, an ex-Union soldier attempts to expose a conspiracy of Southerners who murdered his father, his friend and the President. The blacks' question in the United States and the assassination of president Garfield presented as the way president Kennedy has been murdered. Excellent soundtrack.
- DirectorTonino ValeriiStarsLee Van CleefGiuliano GemmaWalter RillaA scruffy garbage boy becomes the pupil of a famed gunfighter, and the stage for confrontation is set when the gunman overruns the boy's town through violence and corruption.Three stories in one Western: an underdog, the transformation of a worker into a gunman, and the master/apprentice relationship.
- DirectorMichael MannStarsDaniel Day-LewisMadeleine StoweRussell MeansThree trappers protect the daughters of a British Colonel in the midst of the French and Indian War.Not always mentioned among Western movies. Perhaps it is in halfway between a Western and a war film, besides being a love epic.
- DirectorGeorge Roy HillStarsPaul NewmanRobert RedfordKatharine RossIn 1890s Wyoming, Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid lead a band of outlaws. When a train robbery goes wrong, they find themselves on the run with a posse hard on their heels. After considering their options, they escape to South America.A nice mix of humour and action ressembles the best spaghetti Westerns.
- DirectorJayme MonjardimStarsFernanda MontenegroThiago LacerdaMarjorie EstianoThe history of Brazil's southern occupation and the Anna Terra descendants. If the label "Western" may be applied to a film which story happens outside the United States and Mexico, this movie is ouviously of that genre. It is a Western that is held in Southern Brazil and is based in a classic Brazilian novel. The photography is amazing! On the other hand, the worse problems are some actors (such as Fernanda Montenegro) who do not talk as Southern people (both in accent and expressions) and a partially inappropriate casting: part of the actors were phisically not the most appropriate (such as blond characters decending from only brunette and indigenous people).
- DirectorEdward ZwickStarsBrad PittAnthony HopkinsAidan QuinnIn the early 1900s, three brothers and their father living in the remote wilderness of Montana are affected by betrayal, history, love, nature, and war.Sometimes this film seems to be a Western (only when it comes to Tristan), in many other moments it doesn't. There are also some parts in which we watch a war movie, or a mob film, or a rural drama.
- DirectorEd HarrisStarsEd HarrisViggo MortensenRenée ZellwegerTwo friends hired to police a small town that is suffering under the rule of a rancher find their job complicated by the arrival of a young widow.
- DirectorJohn SturgesStarsKirk DouglasAnthony QuinnCarolyn JonesA marshal tries to bring the son of an old friend, an autocratic cattle baron, to justice for his role in the rape and murder of the marshal's Native American wife.
- DirectorJames MangoldStarsRussell CroweChristian BaleBen FosterA small-time rancher agrees to hold a captured outlaw who's awaiting a train to go to court in Yuma. A battle of wills ensues as the outlaw tries to psych out the rancher.Like "True Grit", "3:10 to Yuma" is a movie that shows how people may conquer the respect from each other and, therefore, change the character of their relationship. Also like "True Grit", "3:10 to Yuma" has a remake made in the first decade of XXIst century which is much better than the already nice original film.
- DirectorRobert AltmanStarsWarren BeattyJulie ChristieRene AuberjonoisA gambler and a prostitute become business partners in a remote Old West mining town, and their enterprise thrives until a large corporation arrives on the scene.Perhaps too much slow in the beginning, the movie gets better, and better. It is very unusual for a Western, and in the end I understood why: it is really human, there are real human beings over there. Oh, that's also compulsory to mention: it is really beautiful how the relation between Mr. McCabe and Mrs. Miller is built. P.S.: Why the hell in Brazil the movie was given the ridiculous name "Where men are men"?!
- DirectorHenry HathawayStarsJohn WayneKim DarbyGlen CampbellA drunken, hard-nosed U.S. Marshal and a Texas Ranger help a stubborn teenager track down her father's murderer in Indian Territory.Really nice story, beautifully filmed. Though, the remake is even better.
- DirectorKieran Darcy-SmithStarsWoody HarrelsonLiam HemsworthAlice BragaA Texas Ranger investigates a series of unexplained deaths in a town called Helena.
- DirectorNicholas RayStarsJoan CrawfordSterling HaydenMercedes McCambridgeAfter helping a wounded gang member, a strong-willed female saloon owner is wrongly suspected of murder and bank robbery by a lynch mob.
- DirectorRené SampaioStarsFabrício BoliveiraIsis ValverdeFelipe AbibJoão do Santo Cristo leaves his hometown and moves to Brasília in search of a better life. There, he encounters misery and crime, but also discovers love in the arms of Maria Lúcia.Kinda modern Western (not only in the name), isn' it? In contemporary Brazilian dusty Center-West, a man seeks revenge. The film also flirts aesthetically with the genre. It could be better placed in this list if it were a more typical western.
- DirectorJoachim RønningEspen SandbergStarsPenélope CruzSalma HayekSteve ZahnIn turn-of-the-century Mexico, two very different women become a bank-robbing duo in an effort to combat a ruthless enforcer terrorizing their town.A funny and unpretentious modern Zapata Western comedy film.
- DirectorQuentin TarantinoStarsJamie FoxxChristoph WaltzLeonardo DiCaprioWith the help of a German bounty-hunter, a freed slave sets out to rescue his wife from a brutal plantation owner in Mississippi.Despite serious problems such as happy slaves and the anachronic sunglasses, it is a nice movie (particularly because of Christoph Waltz).
- DirectorSam RaimiStarsSharon StoneGene HackmanRussell CroweA female gunfighter returns to a frontier town where a dueling tournament is being held, which she enters in an effort to avenge her father's death.Very nice cinematography and camera in a feminist revival of spaghetti Western. P.S.: What the hell are those ridiculous sunglasses wore by Sharon Stone?! I thought "Django Unchained" had been the only film to think that Old West cowboys and sunglasses fit to each other.
- DirectorBaz LuhrmannStarsNicole KidmanHugh JackmanShea AdamsIn 1939, an Englishwoman inherits a sprawling ranch in northern Australia and reluctantly makes a pact with a stockman to drive 2000 head of cattle over unforgiving landscape.Beautifully filmed. A Western held neither in 1800's United States, nor during Mexican Revolution, but in 1940's Australian outback.
- DirectorYoon Jong-binStarsHa Jung-wooGang Dong-wonLee Sung-minA period action film centered on a militia group who turn against an unjust nobility. There are strong reasons to consider this Eastern film fitting the genre "Western", as it flirts with Spaghetti Western many times, as in the soundtrack, in the way of presenting characters, in the Zapata-style story, in the dusty scenes, etc.
- DirectorDelmer DavesStarsGlenn FordVan HeflinFelicia FarrBroke small-time rancher Dan Evans is hired by the stagecoach line to put big-time captured outlaw leader Ben Wade on the 3:10 train to Yuma but Wade's gang tries to free him.A nice film, one of the best classical Westerns from the United States. Though it is hard to deny that it was improved in the remake from 2007, which had better action scenes (the final chase, for example) and a much stronger acting. There are many funny quotes and it is very well filmed.
- 1973–1979TV-PG7.8 (15)TV EpisodeStarsRoberto Gómez BolañosRamón ValdésCarlos VillagránHilarious spoof.
- 1973–1979TV-PG7.5 (14)TV EpisodeDirectorRoberto Gómez BolañosStarsRoberto Gómez BolañosRamón ValdésCarlos VillagránExtremely funny parody.
- DirectorRichard BrooksStarsBurt LancasterLee MarvinRobert RyanAn arrogant Texas millionaire hires four adventurers to rescue his kidnapped wife from a notorious Mexican bandit.Kind of Zapata Western version of "Magnificet Seven", better than the latter, and also with a quite famous casting. In spite of being a Zapata Western, it is not very political and much more action-oriented. A quote, from the character Bill Dolworth, deserves to be highlighted: "Maybe there's only one revolution, since the beginning: the good guys against the bad guys. Question is: who are the good guys?"
- DirectorAntoine FuquaStarsDenzel WashingtonChris PrattEthan HawkeSeven gunmen from a variety of backgrounds are brought together by a vengeful young widow to protect her town from the private army of a destructive industrialist.Excellent remake, better than original classic. Background is better developped in the recent film, which follows the very same idea.
- DirectorTommy Lee JonesStarsTommy Lee JonesBarry PepperDwight YoakamRanch foreman Pete Perkins looks to fulfill the promise to his recently deceased best friend by burying him in his hometown in Mexico. This nice film directed and starred by Tommy Lee Jones uses to be considered as a "neo-Western". It is not a typical Western for sure: very few shots and murders. Though, the harsh USA/Mexico frontier is shown in contemporary times and a theme explored in many good films from the genre appears here: two enemies change themselves and their relationship in a quest they face together.
- DirectorKelly AsburyLorna CookStarsMatt DamonJames CromwellDaniel StudiA captured mustang remains determined to return to his herd no matter what.I have seen Westerns under the point of view of Indians, blacks, soldiers, outlaws, lawmen, cowboys... however, this is the very first time I see one on the horse's perspective, for sure. It is nice to see the horses talking to each other without saying a single word (although some thoughts come as narration). It is both a cute animation and a nice revisionist Western. Unfortunately soundtrack is quite bad and seriously damages the movie. Espectator watches a good film but feels that it was a great wasted opportunity: without Matt Damon's narration (which is ok but is not really necessary) and with a great soundtrack from Ennio morricone or something else in that level, it would have been a top-level animation with few dialogs like Wall-E; instead of a good enough movie it would have been a masterpiece!
- StarsJack O'ConnellMichelle DockeryScoot McNairyIn the 1880s American West, murderous outlaw gang leader Frank Griffin hunts for ex-protege Roy Goode. Frank's chase leads him to La Belle, New Mexico--a town inhabited, after a mining disaster, almost entirely by women.
- StarsKevin CostnerBill PaxtonMatt BarrDramatization of the bitter blood feud between the two families on the West Virginia/Kentucky border in the years after the Civil War.1863-1888: decades of family bigotry in old West (not true... the feud was held in old East).
- DirectorRobert ZemeckisStarsMichael J. FoxChristopher LloydMary SteenburgenStranded in 1955, Marty McFly learns about the death of Doc Brown in 1885 and must travel back in time to save him. With no fuel readily available for the DeLorean, the two must figure how to escape the Old West before Emmett is murdered.Very funny sci-fi with Western flavour.
- DirectorMichael CrichtonStarsYul BrynnerRichard BenjaminJames BrolinA robot malfunction creates havoc and terror for unsuspecting vacationers at a futuristic, adult-themed amusement park. Two decades before "Jurassic Park" and 23 years after Asimov's novel "I, Robot". A very nice sci-fi film with a flavor of Wetern, although not really a movie of this genre. It could be better placed in this list if it were.
- DirectorGiorgio FerroniStarsGiuliano GemmaDan VadisJosé CalvoCaptured Confederate raider Gary Diamond agrees to work with the Yankees to prevent any further bloodshed by warning a Confederate regiment against attacking heavily defended Yankee Fort Yuma.It is not an innovative movie, for sure, as many of the usual clichés are there in this highly conventional spaghetti Western (in reality, it is a co-production Italy-France-Spain) without deepening the characters: saloon brawl, piano-playing, shoot-out inside the mine, torture under the sun, honored Southern soldier... Though, it is an unpretentious nice Western, with good film making, good soundtrack, good action, and even good (although not special) acting. Far from achieving the high quality of Leone's movies, this spaghetti Western with a similar name is still above average, anyway.
- DirectorAlbert HughesAllen HughesStarsDenzel WashingtonMila KunisRay StevensonA drifter fights his way across a ravaged, post-apocalyptic America while protecting a sacred book that holds the secrets to humanity's salvation. At a first sight, it may seem nonsense to label this film as a Western. Though, it is impressive how many elements it shares with the genre: people kill each other for anything, and there is a harsh desert, a tiny dusty town with a violent bar, a greedy evil businessman, a stranger going to the West, and even a machine gun. Therefore, "The book of Eli" can be viewed as a modern futuristic and post-apocalyptic Western. It could be better placed if it were a more typical Western.
