Best Horror Films of 2012 (so far)1 of 5
#1: Scary, a little too gory, funny, and clever The Cabin in the Woods is by far my favorite horror film of the year. Co-written by Joss Whedon and director Drew Goddard (who also wrote
Cloverfield and the episodes for many of Whedon's TV shows) the two clearly know and love the genre. Cabin was actually shot in 2009 but legal and financial issues with the rights holder, MGM, prevented it from truly arriving until its debut at SXSW this year (for Whedon this must be like being three years out of college only to find out that he got an "A" on a final that he didn't need to graduate). Five students go through the paces of heading to a place with no cell phone service and end up awakening a...well, you'll have to see the movie. The film was in cold storage for so long that one of the leads, Chris Hemsworth, became a star as Thor and then played him again (in The Avengers ) before the movie was finally widely released in April. It was worth the wait.
