1. Close (I) (2019)

TV-MA | 94 min | Action, Drama, Thriller

51 Metascore

A female bodyguard is hired to protect an heiress on the run from assassins.

Director: Vicky Jewson | Stars: Noomi Rapace, Sophie Nélisse, Indira Varma, Eoin Macken

Votes: 27,154

January 18, 2019 5.5/10

“Close has some really good things going for it. Great visuals, solid lead actors and some really close fight scenes (arms bound fight being the best). However, it’s really held back by some terrible writing and bad dialogue. There’s a few scenes that are forced and felt out of place. Then some scenes that are just flat out bad. Close brings some good moments to the screen but unfortunately is drowned by the writing.”

2. Glass (2019)

PG-13 | 129 min | Drama, Horror, Sci-Fi

43 Metascore

Security guard David Dunn uses his supernatural abilities to track Kevin Wendell Crumb, a disturbed man who has twenty-four personalities.

Director: M. Night Shyamalan | Stars: James McAvoy, Bruce Willis, Samuel L. Jackson, Anya Taylor-Joy

Votes: 271,347 | Gross: $111.05M

January 18, 2019 6.5/10

“Starting the year off strong, Glass is a solid book end to a solid trilogy. While the first 2/3rds of the film is outstanding, the last third kind of shoots itself in the foot for the sake of a twist. Without the ending bringing the film down it could have been a strong contender already for the best of the year.”

3. IO (2019)

TV-14 | 96 min | Adventure, Drama, Sci-Fi

40 Metascore

As a young scientist searches for a way to save a dying Earth, she finds a connection with a man who's racing to catch the last shuttle off the planet.

Director: Jonathan Helpert | Stars: Margaret Qualley, Anthony Mackie, Danny Huston, Tom Payne

Votes: 36,367

January 18, 2019 4.5/10

“While IO has some solid visuals, this slow burn doesn’t really build to anything. The acting is bad for the most part and the story touches on some grand concepts but never develops anything. With only two leads I was hoping for some rich character development but the characters are one dimensional. The best the film had going for it was some great visuals and a nice score. While I was curious to see it through to the end, I don’t think I’ll be returning looking for more.”

4. The Kid Who Would Be King (2019)

PG | 120 min | Action, Adventure, Family

66 Metascore

Alex, a 12-year-old boy, and his friends fight an evil sorceress with the help of Excalibur, the sword of King Arthur, in a bid to save the world from her atrocities.

Director: Joe Cornish | Stars: Louis Ashbourne Serkis, Denise Gough, Dean Chaumoo, Tom Taylor

Votes: 18,715 | Gross: $16.79M

January 25, 2019 6/10

"The Kid Who Would Be King is a fun fantasy film that doesn't do anything too outstanding but does nothing offensive either. It's a safe movie for a young audience with a decent rendition of King Arthur. The fantasy elements are fun and enjoyable with with performances and pacing all over the place it's easy to feel the run time. Still I think it's overall a solid film for a younger audience just not an older one."

5. Polar (I) (2019)

TV-MA | 118 min | Action, Thriller

19 Metascore

A retiring assassin suddenly finds himself on the receiving end of a hit, contracted by none other than his own employer seeking to cash in on the pensions of aging employees.

Director: Jonas Åkerlund | Stars: Mads Mikkelsen, Vanessa Hudgens, Katheryn Winnick, Fei Ren

Votes: 98,943

January 25, 2019 8/10

“While Polar has some very glaring issues, what it does right it does very well. Mads Mikkelsn is poised to be the next Charles Bronson as he was phenomenal in the role. Visually the film had some interesting looks but the overall vibe of the film really feels like wild and fun. Never taking itself seriously while also not trying to be a comedy. It felt like a more tone downed version of Crank. While Polar has its issues, its still really fun and entertaining.”

6. Serenity (I) (2019)

R | 106 min | Drama, Mystery, Thriller

37 Metascore

A fishing boat captain juggles facing his mysterious past and finding himself ensnared in a reality where nothing is what it seems.

Director: Steven Knight | Stars: Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Diane Lane, Jason Clarke

Votes: 45,381 | Gross: $8.55M

January 25, 2019 2/10

"With an all-star cast consisting of Matthew McConaughey, Ann Hathaway, Diane Lane and Jason Clarke with Steven Knight behind it all, you'd think Serenity would be a solid thriller. Serenity however is just awful. Tonally all over the place with terrible writing and dialogue. Visually stale with moments of camera shifting that is just jarring and pointless. The plot to film doesn't work and the twist makes the film make even less sense than it did originally. The music is complete out of place, feeling like it would lay over some epic action fantasy film rather than a small thriller. The concept to the film is rather interesting and original but is not well thought out or written. The only real positive is that Matthew McConaughey was great while the rest of the cast was very weak feeling like the direction of the film make their acting seem bad. I went in to Serenity with little expectations after seeing the trailer, mainly wanting to see from the cast involved but was still surprised on just how bad and amateurish the film felt. Specially coming off the coattails of Locke (2013).

7. Arctic (2018)

PG-13 | 98 min | Adventure, Drama

71 Metascore

A man stranded in the Arctic after a plane crash must decide whether to remain in the relative safety of his makeshift camp or to embark on a deadly trek through the unknown.

Director: Joe Penna | Stars: Mads Mikkelsen, Maria Thelma Smáradóttir, Tintrinai Thikhasuk

Votes: 58,320 | Gross: $2.41M

February 1, 2019 8.5/10

“Arctic is a gripping and harrowing film with an outstanding performance from Mads. Beautifully shot and a strong sense of realism, the film is riveting from the beginning til the end.”

8. Piercing (2018)

R | 81 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller

63 Metascore

A man kisses his wife and baby goodbye and seemingly heads away on business, with a plan to check into a hotel, call an escort service, and kill an unsuspecting prostitute.

Director: Nicolas Pesce | Stars: Christopher Abbott, Laia Costa, Mia Wasikowska, Will Brill

Votes: 8,619 | Gross: $0.02M

February 1, 2019 6/10

“Pesce’s follow up to Eyes of My Mother (2016) leaves a lot to be desired. While some of the surrealist visuals are a treat and can be very unnerving, there feels like a lot of downtime in a film that’s only 81 minutes.”

9. Velvet Buzzsaw (2019)

R | 113 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller

61 Metascore

A thriller about the contemporary art scene of Los Angeles, where big money artists and mega-collectors pay a high price when art collides with commerce.

Director: Dan Gilroy | Stars: Jake Gyllenhaal, Rene Russo, Zawe Ashton, Tom Sturridge

Votes: 66,037

February 1, 2019 5/10

"Velvet Buzzsaw is one of those films where there was nothing that I hated about the film but nothing I really liked either. The characters are bland, the suspense is forced and the overall tone of the film is just bland overall and never really builds the suspense the films thinks it has. It's competently made with solid visuals but the story really holds the film back."

10. Cold Pursuit (2019)

R | 119 min | Action, Comedy, Crime

57 Metascore

A grieving snowplow driver seeks out revenge against the drug dealers who killed his son.

Director: Hans Petter Moland | Stars: Liam Neeson, Laura Dern, Micheál Neeson, Michael Eklund

Votes: 78,029 | Gross: $32.14M

February 8, 2019 6.5/10

"Cold Pursuit feels like a breath of fresh air in the long line of Liam Neeson films, it's well shot with a solid score and a solid performance by Liam Neeson. The film felt pretty well put together but suffers some flaws on the technical side of things. The villain was a solid villain but very one dimensional and did not really do anything to help the story along. Some scenes also felt very rushed or just weird with how it was performed. Also tonally this film is a little all over the place with some really dark and dramatic scenes and then random funny scenes thrown in the really felt out of place even though some scenes were genuinely funny. As for pacing, this film had some parts that really didn't feel like it fit and dragged on. Overall Cold Pursuit was a solid thriller that is one of the higher recommendations of Liam Neeson films even with its flaws."

11. The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part (2019)

PG | 107 min | Animation, Action, Adventure

65 Metascore

It's been five years since everything was awesome and the citizens are facing the huge new threat of Lego Duplo, invaders from outer space, wrecking everything faster than they can rebuild.

Director: Mike Mitchell | Stars: Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks, Will Arnett, Tiffany Haddish

Votes: 76,617 | Gross: $105.81M

February 8, 2019 7/10

"The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part has a lot to love, great humor, amazing animation and a good cast of characters with some good messages for younger kids. However, The Second Part doesn't capture that same magic that the first film had. While it has a lot going for it, it doesn't seem as epic or as creative as the first. The music also isn't as clever or fun in this film and for the most part felt like time filler more than anything else. While there's a lot to like here, it has some short comings but is still well worth your time."

12. The Man Who Killed Hitler and Then the Bigfoot (2018)

Not Rated | 98 min | Adventure, Drama, Sci-Fi

51 Metascore

A legendary American war veteran is recruited to hunt a mythical creature.

Director: Robert D. Krzykowski | Stars: Sam Elliott, Rocco Gioffre, Aidan Turner, Melissa Jalali

Votes: 13,788

February 8, 2019 4/10

"With a title like that and the killer synopsis, The Man Who Killed Hitler and Then The Bigfoot was yet another major let down for 2019. While the film has some great visual moments and Sam Elliot gives a great performance, the film takes itself way too seriously for its outlandish concept and title. Focusing on the more the forced romance and family angle rather than the more interesting War and Bigfoot hunt."

13. The Prodigy (2019)

R | 92 min | Fantasy, Horror, Mystery

45 Metascore

A mother concerned about her young son's disturbing behavior thinks something supernatural may be affecting him.

Director: Nicholas McCarthy | Stars: Taylor Schilling, Jackson Robert Scott, Peter Mooney, Colm Feore

Votes: 28,271 | Gross: $14.86M

February 8, 2019 4.5/10

“The Prodigy is full of terrible cinematography, acting and special effects but the last 20 minutes turned the film around that could have been a great ending if they didn’t play it safe to set up a sequel.”

14. Alita: Battle Angel (2019)

PG-13 | 122 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

53 Metascore

A deactivated cyborg's revived, but can't remember anything of her past and goes on a quest to find out who she is.

Director: Robert Rodriguez | Stars: Rosa Salazar, Christoph Waltz, Jennifer Connelly, Mahershala Ali

Votes: 293,586 | Gross: $85.71M

February 14, 2019 8/10

“Alita: Battle Angel is a lot better than I thought it would be. The action is a blast with a rich world and decent character development. The visuals such as CGI is outstanding even though the cinematography is just par for the course. Alita feels like a love action Anime done right and for that I love this film.”

15. How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019)

PG | 104 min | Animation, Action, Adventure

71 Metascore

When Hiccup discovers Toothless isn't the only Night Fury, he must seek the Hidden World, a secret Dragon Utopia before a hired tyrant named Grimmel finds it first.

Director: Dean DeBlois | Stars: Jay Baruchel, America Ferrera, F. Murray Abraham, Cate Blanchett

Votes: 150,454 | Gross: $160.80M

February 22, 2019 5/10

"I really like the first two How to Train Your Dragon movies so I was pretty disappointed with The Hidden World to say the least. While the animation is outstanding and the ending does a great job at closing the series, the rest of the film felt very underwhelming. A lot of the humor really didn't land for me and the writing felt really weak. Every line of dialogue was either exposition or foreshadowing, it's so predictable that I knew exactly every moment that was going to happen. Which isn't always a bad thing if you have something to root for but The Hidden World didn't have that epic tone that the other two did. The cast, while great to see again, doesn't feel developed any further and almost now feel one dimensional. I never felt like there was really any stakes or felt that Hiccup was ever really at a disadvantage. The first two films had great character development and high stakes but Hidden World felt like it had neither. I felt bored through most of the film and that was very disappointing because I loved the first two. While I feel like Hidden World has it's flaws, it has some strong points too, just wish it was as good as the others to give a proper send off to a great series."

16. Paddleton (2019)

TV-MA | 89 min | Comedy, Drama

70 Metascore

An unlikely friendship between two misfit neighbors becomes an unexpectedly emotional journey when the younger man is diagnosed with terminal cancer.

Director: Alex Lehmann | Stars: Christine Woods, Mark Duplass, Ray Romano, Jen Kuo Sung

Votes: 15,401

February 22, 2019 9/10

“Paddleton is a heart felt character study on two friends that is emotional and it is charming. With rich characters and by far the best performance I’ve ever seen from Ray, it was truly a great film.”

17. Climax (I) (2018)

R | 97 min | Drama, Horror, Music

69 Metascore

French dancers gather in a remote, empty school building to rehearse on a wintry night. The all-night celebration morphs into a hallucinatory nightmare when they learn their sangria is laced with LSD.

Director: Gaspar Noé | Stars: Sofia Boutella, Romain Guillermic, Souheila Yacoub, Kiddy Smile

Votes: 79,333 | Gross: $0.80M

March 1, 2019 8/10

“While Noe crafts a brutal nightmare, Climax is a film in masterful technical skill that can leave the viewer frustrated.”

18. Furie (2019)

TV-14 | 98 min | Action, Drama, Thriller

When her daughter is kidnapped, a desperate yet determined mother treks through her former gang's turf in Saigon to track down the abductors.

Director: Le-Van Kiet | Stars: Veronica Ngo, Mai Cát Vi, Thanh Nhien Phan, Pham Anh Khoa

Votes: 5,645 | Gross: $0.59M

March 1, 2019 7/10

“Even though Furie lacks the emotional pull it’s trying to build with it’s story, it makes up for in pure action masterclass. The action is masterfully done and visually the movie looks stunning. I just wish the story could have been as well handled.”

19. Greta (2018)

R | 98 min | Drama, Mystery, Thriller

54 Metascore

A young woman befriends a lonely widow who's harboring a dark and deadly agenda toward her.

Director: Neil Jordan | Stars: Isabelle Huppert, Chloë Grace Moretz, Maika Monroe, Jane Perry

Votes: 38,011 | Gross: $10.52M

March 1, 2019 5/10

“While Greta has some good moments, with good cinematography and a great use of the soundtrack, the film is heavily weighed down. The performances are up and down from the entire cast and the film tends to drag.”

20. Free Solo (2018)

PG-13 | 100 min | Documentary, Adventure, Sport

83 Metascore

Alex Honnold faces the biggest challenge of his career, climbing El Capitan in Yosemite National Park. He pursues it Free Solo, which means climbing without a rope and alone.

Directors: Jimmy Chin, Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi | Stars: Alex Honnold, Tommy Caldwell, Jimmy Chin, Cheyne Lempe

Votes: 77,305 | Gross: $17.54M

March 3, 2019 7/10

“Free Solo is a gripping look into someone’s determination to achieve happiness. With some absolutely amazing footage captured here, it’s hard not to feel the tension even if the subject material isn’t for you.”

21. An Elephant Sitting Still (2018)

230 min | Crime, Drama

86 Metascore

Four people in a Chinese city live through a complicated day as their lives intersect.

Director: Bo Hu | Stars: Yu Zhang, Yuchang Peng, Uvin Wang, Zi Xi

Votes: 7,986 | Gross: $0.03M

March 8, 2019 9.5/10

“An Elephant Sitting Still is a sprawling 4 hour masterpiece that is filled with interesting and rich characters. This film is so masterfully crafted that it’s sad that director Bo Hu tragically took his life. Gorgeous cinematography and outstanding performances with flawless pacing makes this depressing tale seem a lot shorter than it’s actual runtime. The only complaint I have is a weak performance by a child actor but at the same time that is the only issue I have with a near 4 hour movie that is without a doubt beautiful.”

22. Captain Marvel (2019)

PG-13 | 123 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

64 Metascore

Carol Danvers becomes one of the universe's most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races.

Directors: Anna Boden, Ryan Fleck | Stars: Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Jude Law

Votes: 610,439 | Gross: $426.83M

March 8, 2019 5/10

“Captain Marvel does nothing new to the Marvel formula and at this point fatigue is really starting to set in. Overall the film is still of some quality as Marvel has yet to but out a truly bad film but Captain Marvel leaves little to be desired. While the CGI was much improved from Black Panther or Ant-Man and the Wasp. The film just felt like the standard. When Infinity was a much improvement to the MCU, Captain Marvel feels like a step backwards.”

23. Triple Frontier (2019)

R | 125 min | Action, Thriller

61 Metascore

Loyalties are tested when five friends and former special forces operatives reunite to take down a South American drug lord, unleashing a chain of unintended consequences.

Director: J.C. Chandor | Stars: Ben Affleck, Oscar Isaac, Charlie Hunnam, Garrett Hedlund

Votes: 145,942

March 13, 2019 6.5/10

"Triple Frontier has some suspenseful moments with likable characters that is brought down by bad writing. Characters begin to make unreasonable decisions that don't fit with the characters at all and while the action was solid, the pacing is all over the place."

24. Jiang hu er nü (2018)

Not Rated | 136 min | Crime, Drama, Romance

85 Metascore

A story of violent love within a time frame spanning from 2001 to 2017.

Director: Zhangke Jia | Stars: Tao Zhao, Fan Liao, Zheng Xu, Casper Liang

Votes: 10,604 | Gross: $0.42M

March 15, 2019 6.5/10

"Ash is Purest White was a film I was really looking forward to and feel a let disappointed. The strong features here are definitely the performances. The pacing feels all over the place and the film takes place over about a 17 year period and the film never really feels like any time has passed. Overall though it's a solid film with good ideas and great characters, just was hoping for something a little more."

25. Captive State (2019)

PG-13 | 109 min | Action, Horror, Sci-Fi

54 Metascore

Set in a Chicago neighborhood nearly a decade after an occupation by an extraterrestrial force, 'Captive State' explores the lives on both sides of the conflict - the collaborators and dissidents.

Director: Rupert Wyatt | Stars: John Goodman, Ashton Sanders, Jonathan Majors, Vera Farmiga

Votes: 57,876 | Gross: $5.96M

March 15, 2019 4/10

"Captive State builds an interesting world that truly felt under control but drops the ball on building a captivating story. While there were things I enjoyed, like the soundtrack and the premise, there's a lot bad here as well. The written is weak and underdeveloped, the acting is bad from the entire cast, visuals one of the ugliest movies I've seen in a while and a build up to an abrupt end. The entire film spends the runtime build up to what seems to be a franchise and then backs out to wrap everything up very quick at the end."

26. Cold War (2018)

R | 89 min | Drama, Music, Romance

90 Metascore

In the 1950s, a music director falls in love with a singer and tries to persuade her to flee communist Poland for France.

Director: Pawel Pawlikowski | Stars: Joanna Kulig, Tomasz Kot, Borys Szyc, Agata Kulesza

Votes: 61,897 | Gross: $4.57M

March 22, 2019 8/10

“Beautifully put together with amazing cinematography and performances, Cold War tells a touching story of love from its ups and downs. While I didn’t get fully invested into the story, the film is still a great case study in filmmaking.”

27. The Dirt (2019)

TV-MA | 107 min | Biography, Comedy, Drama

39 Metascore

Based on the bestselling autobiography from Mötley Crüe, the film is an unflinching tale of success and excess as four misfits rise from the streets of Hollywood to the heights of international fame.

Director: Jeff Tremaine | Stars: Douglas Booth, Iwan Rheon, Colson Baker, Daniel Webber

Votes: 55,279

March 22, 2019 6/10

“As a massive Motley Crue fan I was looking forward to The Dirt even though I haven’t read the book and overall I felt it was a solid film. There was a lot I liked here, solid performances, lot of energy and obviously the music but it wasn’t perfect. Visually the movie looks and feels cheap and the breaking of the fourth wall really didn’t work for me. It didn’t feel like a movie about the band but rather a behind the music re-enactment. Still overall I enjoyed the film despite some of the technical short comings.”

28. Dragged Across Concrete (2018)

R | 159 min | Action, Crime, Drama

60 Metascore

Once two overzealous cops get suspended from the force, they must delve into the criminal underworld to get their proper compensation.

Director: S. Craig Zahler | Stars: Mel Gibson, Vince Vaughn, Tory Kittles, Michael Jai White

Votes: 55,232

March 22, 2019 7/10

“Dragged is a slow burn thriller with great characters that keeps you wondering what will happen next. While I don’t ever see myself revisiting, I did enjoy my time as the film is well crafted.”

29. Us (II) (2019)

R | 116 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller

81 Metascore

Adelaide Wilson and her family are attacked by mysterious figures dressed in red. Upon closer inspection, the Wilsons realize that the intruders are exact lookalikes of them.

Director: Jordan Peele | Stars: Lupita Nyong'o, Winston Duke, Elisabeth Moss, Tim Heidecker

Votes: 340,871 | Gross: $175.08M

March 22, 2019 7.5/10

"Us is a well made thriller that boosts some great ideas. With great visuals, a solid soundtrack and all around well preformed, Us pulls you in even if it isn't as gripping or thrilling as you'd hope for. I do think Us is better than Peele's first, Get Out, and caused a lot of discussion between me and my girlfriend."

30. The Burial of Kojo (2018)

80 min | Drama, Thriller

93 Metascore

A man is trapped in a mine shaft by his vengeful brother while his daughter embarks on a magical journey to rescue him.

Director: Blitz Bazawule | Stars: Joseph Otsiman, Mamley Djangmah, Kobina Amissah-Sam, Ama K. Abebrese

Votes: 808

March 29, 2019 7/10

"The Burial of Kojo isn't without its flaws but the good really out ways the bad. With some really interesting visuals and unique storytelling, it's hard not to find the charm Kojo has."

31. The Beach Bum (2019)

R | 95 min | Comedy

55 Metascore

A rebellious stoner named Moondog lives life by his own rules.

Director: Harmony Korine | Stars: Matthew McConaughey, Snoop Dogg, Isla Fisher, Stefania LaVie Owen

Votes: 24,812 | Gross: $3.49M

March 29, 2019 6.5/10

"The Beach Bum is exactly what I think Harmony Korine wants the film to be. There's very little on artistic vision and technical skills that you can fault The Beach Bum. It's a well shot film with a unique style and amazing performances from the entire cast. However, I still felt underwhelmed and rather uninterested for the most part. The story just seems underwhelming especially coming off the heels of Spring Breakers. I never really felt invested into the story until the later half of the movie and even then I wasn't very engaged. There's a lot to admire about the film when it comes down to the vision Korine was going for, but for a story, it had little to tell."

32. The Legend of Cocaine Island (2018)

TV-MA | 83 min | Documentary

44 Metascore

A desperate man goes on a buried treasure hunt for $2 million worth of cocaine.

Director: Theo Love | Stars: Bo Butterworth, Bri Bryant, Edward Craig, Andy Culpepper

Votes: 3,540

March 29, 2019 6/10

“While the story and characters are likable, Cocaine Island never really feels like a documentary. Brushing off character development to tell a story of he said instead of giving us any kind of resolve.”

33. Never Grow Old (2019)

R | 100 min | Drama, Western

65 Metascore

An Irish undertaker profits when outlaws take over a peaceful American frontier town, but his family comes under threat as the death toll rises.

Director: Ivan Kavanagh | Stars: Emile Hirsch, John Cusack, Déborah François, Molly McCann

Votes: 4,829

March 29, 2019 5/10

“Never Grow Old is a well shot western that doesn’t really stand out. Emile Hirsch gives a strong performance but John Cusack once again felt like he was there only for a paycheck.”

34. Unplanned (I) (2019)

R | 109 min | Biography, Drama

10 Metascore

All Abby Johnson ever wanted to do was help women. As one of the youngest Planned Parenthood clinic directors in the nation, she believed in a woman's right to choose. Until the day she saw something that changed everything.

Directors: Chuck Konzelman, Cary Solomon | Stars: Ashley Bratcher, Brooks Ryan, Robia Scott, Jared Lotz

Votes: 14,699 | Gross: $18.99M

March 29, 2019 3/10

“Even when you take away the films politics and views you’re still left with a poorly shot and acted film with a dull story. But it can be ironically funny.”

35. Mercy Black (2019)

TV-14 | 88 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller

48 Metascore

A woman is sent to a mental institution after stabbing her classmate in an attempt to conjure an evil spirit called, Mercy Black. Fifteen years later she's released, and must save her nephew, who has become obsessed with the phenomenon.

Director: Owen Egerton | Stars: Daniella Pineda, Austin Amelio, Elle LaMont, Lee Eddy

Votes: 4,057

March 30, 2019 3/10

“Lame is a great way to describe this one. No levels of horror, all tense falls flat from bad acting, poor development and bland visuals. There’s nothing this one does above just bland and for the most part it falls below average.”

36. The Head Hunter (2018)

72 min | Fantasy, Horror

A medieval warrior's gruesome collection of heads is missing only one - the monster that killed his daughter years ago.

Director: Jordan Downey | Stars: Christopher Rygh, Cora Kaufman, Aisha Ricketts

Votes: 7,113

April 5, 2019 7.5/10

“With striking visuals and a haunting story The Head Hunter is an impressive feature for a budget as low as it had. A strong lead performance and soundtrack makes up for some budget lacking moments. This is how you make a film with basically no budget. It’s clear to see that this was a very hands on passion project that worth supporting.”

37. Pengin haiwei (2018)

Not Rated | 117 min | Animation, Adventure, Family

82 Metascore

A fourth-grader, Aoyama-kun, investigates the mysterious reason behind the sudden appearance of penguins in his village, which is somehow related to a power from a young woman working at a dental clinic.

Director: Hiroyasu Ishida | Stars: Kana Kita, Yû Aoi, Rie Kugimiya, Megumi Han

Votes: 3,835

April 5, 2019 7/10

“Penguin Highway is heartwarming and entertaining with stunning animation but does drag a bit in the middle. It’s a overall solid film that could leave you wanting a little more.”

Votes: 98,509 | Gross: $54.72M

April 5, 2019 2.5/10

"While I do like the original Pet Sematary, I don't hold it up as a horror classic so when I heard about the remake I wasn't all the interested to begin with and I was still disappointed. This movie is beyond bad. It's boring with bad performances, bad cinematography, bad music and bad writing. Everything is under developed and the film relies too much on jump scares and never build any tension. This to me is easily the most bored I've been in a theater all year."

39. Shazam! (2019)

PG-13 | 132 min | Action, Adventure, Comedy

71 Metascore

Votes: 384,778 | Gross: $140.37M

April 5, 2019 7.5/10

"Going into Shazam! I had little to no expectations and was pleasantly surprised. This is by far the best DCCU film so far. It's a nice blend of goofy and over-the-top action that makes it feel like a cartoon rather than dark and brooding like the other DCCU movies. Shazam does take a lot from the Marvel films but it felt unique and took a different twist on the formula that makes it stand out. The film does has its problems from bad CGI to sometimes the humor falling flat but overall it's a solid popcorn flick."

Director: Neil Marshall | Stars: David Harbour, Milla Jovovich, Ian McShane, Sasha Lane

Votes: 98,676 | Gross: $21.90M

April 12, 2019 5.5/10

"While Hellboy has a lot of bad going for it, visuals, cinematography, editing, writing, what it does have going for it is the fact it's so enjoyable. It's over-the-top, violent and rude and really enjoyable in that aspect. Everyone here is giving it there all too in the performance department. While it has a lot bringing it down, Hellboy is still an enjoyable time at the movies even though it's at a 5.5/10 for me."

April 12, 2019 6/10

“While High Life has an amazing soundtrack with great performances and interesting visuals, it’s more style over substance here. The plot of the film feels thin with a slow pacing that makes the film drag. While there are some things I liked here, I don’t ever see myself revisiting.”

April 17, 2019 6/10

"While Hail Satan? is an enjoyable film overall, the film starts to become repetitive without offering anything outstanding on the technical side of the film. The film does a great job at bringing an unbiased view into a topic not a lot of people are likely to know about."

April 17, 2019 6.5/10

“Penguins is exactly what it needs to be as a kids geared nature documentary. It’s full of beautiful shots and comedy with a well paced story that keeps it engaging. While the narration really takes away, overall it’s a solid good time.”

49. The Curse of La Llorona (2019)

April 19, 2019 5.5/10

“While La Llorona is full of horror cliches and does nothing to outstanding to stand out above the rest, what it does it does well. Yes it’s full of jump scares but it does nothing really offensive either. It has solid performances with sometimes some interesting visuals. Sure it does nothing all that impressive but with how bad horror films have been this year it was at least nice to see one be competent.”

50. Hagazussa (2017)

Votes: 6,981 | Gross: $0.01M

April 19, 2019 5.5/10

"While Hagazussa has some beautiful cinematography and a haunting score, the film is so slow paced with very little substance. It tries to build a thick atmosphere but with little character development and very small plot points, it struggles to build the atmosphere in the story that the visuals and score are trying to build up. I think Hagazussa shows some great technical skill but offers very little to the viewer."

Votes: 103,355

May 3, 2019 6.5/10

"There's a lot here to appreciate about the film from it's soundtrack to its performances and it's attention to detail but it's not perfect. The film balances the line to make you think if Bundy is innocent or guilty and I feel like it doesn't do that very well, leaving some moments in the film to be frustrating. The film also spends most of its time to make you feel like Bundy is innocent without diving too much into the extremely wicked, shockingly evil, and vile things that he actually did."

56. UglyDolls (2019)

PG | 87 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

39 Metascore

An animated adventure in which the free-spirited UglyDolls confront what it means to be different, struggle with a desire to be loved, and ultimately discover who you truly are is what matters most.

Director: Kelly Asbury | Stars: Kelly Clarkson, Nick Jonas, Janelle Monáe, Blake Shelton

Votes: 7,811 | Gross: $20.15M

May 3, 2019 2/10

“Uglydolls has a good concept but that’s pretty much it. The animation is terrible, their eyes and mouths don’t even feel like a part of the character buy rather an overlay. The songs are boring and one out of context could be taken as rather mean spirited. Voice acting is terrible, while the singing was decent, the line delivery was as stilted as it comes. The overall tone of the film also felt rather inappropriate for a kids movie. The message of the film is it’s ok to be yourself and different but it also tells you to try and work on yourself to fit in a little better. Overall it was a frustrating watch that I’m glad I got to stream for free. The only positives I can give the film are the fact that the character design, while not necessarily ugly, are good for selling toys. The singing is decent even though the songs are terrible and the film genuinely made me laugh once on purpose. I did enjoy laughing at this film for all the wrong reasons though.”

May 10, 2019 7/10

"While Detective Pikachu definitely has its flaws, what it does right is be a super good time at the theater. It's cartoonish and packed with noir elements that makes it a blast to watch. Although I wish they went further with the noir side, I had a blast watching and could easily watch again."

“John Wick has been a very well done action series and with the third installment bring some of the best action of all time. The action fight scenes are gorgeously done. The film is non-stop and each sequence feels different from each other. Some of the stunts are just unbelievable. Beautifully shot with a strong and engaging story. Votes: 206,780 | Gross: $110.50M

May 31, 2019 5/10

"As a huge fan of Godzilla and Kaiju movies, I was really looking forward to the follow up from 2014, a movie I loved. Unfortunately the King of the Monsters falls pray to the swarm of bad movies in 2019. With bad acting and at times bad cgi, you never really get the spectacle that you'd want from a film like this and instead focuses too much on a family story that is underdeveloped and just gets in the way. I've never been apposed to the human aspect of Kaiju films but it should be at least interesting. All the human elements felt cliched or underdeveloped and just down right boring. When acting finally hits the screen, it cuts away almost instantly back to the humans. I was hoping for some spectacle and while there is some shinning moments, the rest just feels like a slumber."

Votes: 59,620 | Gross: $45.37M

May 31, 2019 4/10

"Ma boasts an amazing performance by Octavia Spencer and a well rounded soundtrack but offers little to nothing else. With some decent visual moments, the overall cinematography suffers as bad acting and terrible writing bring the film down. Honestly it's an idea that I really like and if it was set in a slower, more grounded film it could have been great. It feels like a great concept with a great lead but poor execution .

June 7, 2019 5/10

"While Secret Life was decent, I didn't have too much anticipation for the follow up and I wasn't really disappointed. It's a fine movie that's entertaining enough but it doesn't feel like a cohesive story. Multiple plot lines that felt like a bunch of shorts mixed into one. I will give credit to Patton Oswalt who was a much better choice than Louis C.K."

"With another disappointing film for 2019, Dark Phoenix doesn't raise but rather burns in ashes. With bad writing, acting and visuals, it's disappointing to see the downward slop of the X-Men franchise since Days of Future Past. The only saving grace to this boring film was the a well done score and the performances of James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender."

June 21, 2019 5.5/10

“While Anna has some of the stylizing you’d expect from a Luc Besson film, the overall film feels drawn out and bland. With much better and unique action films this year has offered, Anna doesn’t deliver on anything fresh and exciting. While the film isn’t a bad watch by no means, I just see myself forgetting this one in a few months.”

July 3, 2019 8/10

"Midsommar is a nightmarish tale that probably shouldn't have gotten a wide release. In my theater a girl said out loud "what are we even watching?" and that might be a good summary of it. It's one of those films that really hard to put a rating on because there's a lot to digest here. The performances, score and visuals are outstanding even if the pacing seems a little uneven. What Midsommar does right is give you an experience you won't get from everywhere else this year."

“Stuber is a fun buddy comedy that doesn’t bring a lot new to the table but does bring some laughs as well. It will definitely feel dated over time but for now it was an enjoyable watch.”

78. The Lion King (2019)

PG | 118 min | Animation, Adventure, Drama

55 Metascore

After the murder of his father, a young lion prince flees his kingdom only to learn the true meaning of responsibility and bravery.

Director: Jon Favreau | Stars: Donald Glover, Beyoncé, Seth Rogen, Chiwetel Ejiofor

Votes: 266,805 | Gross: $543.64M

July 19, 2019 3/10

"While The Lion King has some stunning CGI work here and a standout performance by Seth Rogan and Billy Eichner, the rest falls flat. I'm not a huge fan of the original Lion King but any of the charm and wit the original had, this version just lacks everything. Donald Glover and Beyonce should get razzies for their awful performances here. The animals lacked any kind of emotion due to the animation style and it really takes away from what the story has to offer. Everything about this film feels like an uninspired version from the original. I honestly have no idea why anyone would want to watch this over the original."

Votes: 22,783

July 20, 2019 8/10

“Batman has had a great run in 2019 with it’s animated films and Hush is a great addition. Dark and brooding with the whole gallery. For a shorter film there’s a lot going on here and none of it feels rushed.”

64 Metascore

The story of a young man who, after losing his mother, goes to work with a doctor specializing in lobotomies and therapies.

Director: Rick Alverson | Stars: Tye Sheridan, Udo Kier, Larry Fessenden, Margot Klein

Votes: 1,791 | Gross: $0.05M

July 26, 2019 6/10

“The Mountain is a beautifully shot film that has a strong performance by Goldblum but lacks in substance for it’s slow paced story. There’s a good bit here to appreciate even though it’s a hard one to recommend.”

Votes: 847,166 | Gross: $142.50M

July 26, 2019 8/10

“With two outstanding leads, Tarantino’s love letter to Hollywood shows why he is a master at his craft. While I do think this outing suffers more pacing issues than his other films, Hollywood is still a Tarantino classic.”

82. Skin (V) (2018)

R | 118 min | Biography, Crime, Drama

58 Metascore

Votes: 18,770

July 26, 2019 6.5/10

"Skin feels like familiar territory in comparison to American History X but lacking the artistic vision of the other. While Skin has some very strong moments and engaging story, it never really surpasses or do anything new that films in the similar category have already done."

"Mewes' directorial debut was a pretty solid film that boosts the actor's best performance. The film has some great comedic moments but is held back by the low production quality. Poor cinematography and lightning made the film look really cheap. It shows some strong potential though and makes me excited to see what's next."

August 2, 2019 8.5/10

"Jennifer Kent's follow up to her classic horror film The Babadook (2014) is a unflinching and visceral tale lead by one of the years best performances by Aisling Franciosi. Well crafted with strong visuals, The Nightingale is arguably one of the most disturbing films of 2019."

Votes: 4,148

August 9, 2019 5.5/10

“While Static Cling brought back some characters we all love, that’s about it. The humor doesn’t feel as sharp as the show and for a 45 minute feature it really drags. Still it was nice to see some old faces.”

86. The Kitchen (2019)

R | 102 min | Action, Crime, Drama

35 Metascore

The wives of New York gangsters in Hell's Kitchen in the 1970s continue to operate their husbands' rackets after they're locked up in prison.

Director: Andrea Berloff | Stars: Melissa McCarthy, Tiffany Haddish, Elisabeth Moss, Domhnall Gleeson

Votes: 22,961 | Gross: $12.05M

August 9, 2019 4.5/10

"While The Kitchen has an all-star cast and a great soundtrack, the plot is rather weak and never goes as far as you would be hoping for. Both Elisabeth Moss and Melissa McCarthy do a great job, there's just not much for them to do other than outclass Tiffany Haddish. The film really feels like nothing happens for most of the movie and I even thought at some points of how bored I was. There's chunks here though that makes me want to like The Kitchen but it's glaring issues are too much to look past."

90. Good Boys (2019)

Director: Gene Stupnitsky | Stars: Jacob Tremblay, Keith L. Williams, Brady Noon, Molly Gordon

Votes: 81,744 | Gross: $83.14M

August 16, 2019 3/10

“Good Boys is as lazy as it comes to comedy where the only punchline is (look at kids saying vulgar things while being involved in adult situations). There’s nothing clever here and I was rather disappointed. The acting is beyond bad as well besides the few moments Will Forte shows up to provide really anything for this film to offer. Sure there’s some good ideas here and a few jokes land but over after five minutes it became a very stale one note.”

Votes: 3,108

August 23, 2019 3/10

“Tone-Deaf has some good ideas and a good performance from Robert Patrick but that’s pretty much it. It really is Tone-Deaf, It carries no tone, horror elements are weak and so is The comedy aspect. It’s pandering with a horrible lead that’s only lifted from a decent premise and Robert Patrick.”

August 30, 2019 2/10

“Killerman shows that Liam Hemsworth can’t carry a film like his brother. I’ve never a movie fall on its face at every turn. The only redeemable quality would be the color artist and the lightning director. Everything is all round bad.”
