Best Actress: Toni Collette, 'Hereditary'
When Toni Collette took home Best Actress at the Gotham Awards, I was cautiously optimistic her work in Hereditary would be honored at subsequent shows. Alas, that has not been the case — and while a Best Actress Oscar nom is a long shot, it's definitely deserved; there wasn't a more multifaceted performance this year. An even longer shot? A Best Picture nod for Hereditary, the only horror film that will matter in a decade. Of course, that won't sway Academy voters, a group not exactly known for their prescience. — James M
