I know you would expect me to pick Citizen Kane but The Trial had such an influence on me, particularly as I subsequently directed Stephen Berkoff's adaptation of Kafka's novel for the theater at Oxford University. Welles' eye for cinematography is jaw-dropping. I can still recall particular shots and not understand how they could achieve such compositional power.
