Cate Blanchett has been appointed president of this year’s Cannes Film Festival jury, making her the 12th woman to assume the role in 71 editions of the prestigious festival. The announcement came in the same week that more than 300 influential women in Hollywood, Blanchett among them, launched the Time’s Up initiative, in response to a series of sexual assault accusations against prominent men in the film industry. The Australian actor and two-time Oscar winner said: "[Cannes] plays a pivotal role in bringing the world together to celebrate story; that strange and vital endeavor that all peoples share, understand and crave." Cannes Film Festival runs May 8 to 19.
