Apology of the Week
Enjoy a long and successful career as a recording star, get invited to sing the national anthem at the NBA All-Star game, then soak in all the accolades, right? Well, not exactly. Fergie found this out the hard way this past weekend when her jazzy rendition-slash-reinvention of "The Star-Spangled Banner" was widely panned by social media and even, if we can interpret their smirks captured on camera, the All-Star basketball players themselves. The uproar over her performance caused the singer to issue a statement the day after. "I've always been honored and proud to perform the national anthem, and last night I wanted to try something special for the NBA," she explained. "I'm a risk taker artistically, but clearly this rendition didn’t strike the intended tone. I love this country and honestly tried my best."
