Editors' Picks: Our Favorite Things From the Week of June 247 of 9
How-Did-We-Miss-This? Indie of the Week
That Summer wasn't on our radar until now. The documentary focuses on a film project that artist Peter Beard started, but ultimately abandoned, with Lee Radziwill, the equally glamorous younger sister of Jackie O. Somehow while hanging out with Andy Warhol and Bianca Jagger, the two friends shot four reels of test footage on Edith Bouvier Beale and her daughter, Little Edie, the eccentric aunt-and-cousin duo (and relatives of Jackie O and Radziwill) at their decaying East Hampton mansion. The footage was shot by Albert and David Maysles, who would famously reunite with Big and Little Edie a few years later to make Grey Gardens. Director Göran Hugo Olsson acquired this establishing footage and, with Radziwill's blessing, assembled it into That Summer, which functions as a prequel to Grey Gardens and reveals what life was like inside the mansion as its inhabitants were weaving their way into local folklore.
