- DirectorPete DocterBob PetersonStarsEdward AsnerJordan NagaiJohn Ratzenberger78-year-old Carl Fredricksen travels to Paradise Falls in his house equipped with balloons, inadvertently taking a young stowaway.Another home run by Pixar, this movie will make you laugh one minute and then cry your eyes out the very next. I absolutely love the colour palette, it's so vibrant, and the lighting is done superbly as well. A solid A+++ film, a must-see!
- DirectorQuentin TarantinoStarsBrad PittDiane KrugerEli RothIn Nazi-occupied France during World War II, a plan to assassinate Nazi leaders by a group of Jewish U.S. soldiers coincides with a theatre owner's vengeful plans for the same.Quentin Tarantino made a film that defied all expectations, and to be honest, I couldn't be happier. Inglorious Basterds is a great film, kept aloft by strong performances and fueled by dialogue that grows more increasingly intense than any shootout scene could have.
- DirectorNeill BlomkampStarsSharlto CopleyDavid JamesJason CopeViolence ensues after an extraterrestrial race forced to live in slum-like conditions on Earth finds a kindred spirit in a government agent exposed to their biotechnology.A very cool allegory about apartheid, although it doesn't let that stop it from having fun. Pig-projectiles for the win.
- DirectorWes AndersonStarsGeorge ClooneyMeryl StreepBill MurrayAn urbane fox cannot resist returning to his farm raiding ways and then must help his community survive the farmers' retaliation.Extremely charming, funny and featuring stylish stop-motion animation (which would make this worth a watch even if the rest of it wasn't so awesome... kinda like the opposite of A Scanner Darkly).
- DirectorDenis VilleneuveStarsMaxim GaudetteSébastien HuberdeauKarine VanasseA dramatization of the 1989 Montréal Massacre, during which several female engineering students were murdered by an unstable misogynist.A disturbingly stark and respectful portrait of a real-life tragedy, Polytechnique shows the depths of irrational hatred that people can descend to, and the survivors' attempts to cope in the aftermath. A great early indication that Denis Villeneuve would become one of the most important directors working today.
- DirectorJason ReitmanStarsGeorge ClooneyVera FarmigaAnna KendrickRyan's job is to travel around the country firing off people. When his boss hires Natalie, who proposes firing people via video conference, he tries to convince her that her method is a mistake.A very enjoyable and interesting drama with a great cast.
- DirectorJohn WooStarsTony Leung Chiu-waiTakeshi KaneshiroFengyi ZhangThe first chapter of a two-part story centered on a battle fought in China's Three Kingdoms period (220-280 A.D.).AWESOME war movie by John Woo. He captures the epic scale of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms well. I'll go so far as to say that this is the Chinese equivalent of The Lord of the Rings films - do yourself a favour and see it!
- DirectorZack SnyderStarsJackie Earle HaleyPatrick WilsonCarla GuginoIn a version of 1985 where superheroes exist, the murder of a colleague sends active vigilante Rorschach on the trail of a conspiracy that will change the course of history.A surprisingly faithful adaptation of the graphic novel. However, the theatrical cut is a bit lacking, to really appreciate it I recommend the Director's or (if you're really into it) Ultimate cut... or just read the graphic novel. :P
- DirectorDaniel MonzónStarsLuis TosarAlberto AmmannAntonio ResinesThe story of two men on different sides of a prison riot -- the inmate leading the rebellion and the young guard trapped in the revolt, who poses as a prisoner in a desperate attempt to survive the ordeal.A really intense Spanish thriller - think Die Hard in a prison and you have a pretty close idea of how it is.
- DirectorPierre MorelStarsLiam NeesonMaggie GraceFamke JanssenA retired CIA agent travels across Europe and relies on his old skills to save his estranged daughter, who has been kidnapped while on a trip to Paris. One of the bigger surprises for me in 2009, this movie is an extremely enjoyable action-romp through the streets of Paris.
- DirectorJames CameronStarsSam WorthingtonZoe SaldanaSigourney WeaverA paraplegic Marine dispatched to the moon Pandora on a unique mission becomes torn between following his orders and protecting the world he feels is his home.I'm gonna go on a longer rant than usual for this one... it's good, but James Cameron has done much, MUCH better. The story does take a backseat to the visuals, and it's pretty by-the-numbers stuff. Even the hippy/nerd-following it has gotten are annoying. Regardless, this is still an entertaining film, but a step down for James Cameron compared to Aliens and Terminator 1 & 2. And for those who complained about it not winning Best Picture - it didn't stand a chance. Even if The Hurt Locker hadn't won, it still was outclassed by Inglorious Basterds and Up, among others.
- DirectorGiacomo TalaminiStarsGiacomo TalaminiPhillip SacramentoPatrizia LiccardiThe movie is set in 2007, taking place before or right after the first part of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty.A surprisingly well-made fan movie. I love the series, and this production captures the feeling of it very well. Plus it was filmed on a shoe-string budget, making the grandeur production values even more amazing to behold. It's available for free, get it!!
- DirectorRuben FleischerStarsJesse EisenbergEmma StoneWoody HarrelsonA shy student trying to reach his family in Ohio, a gun-toting bruiser in search of the last Twinkie and a pair of sisters striving to get to an amusement park join forces in a trek across a zombie-filled America.A surprisingly fun romp through zombie-infested America, but I can't help but feel that the zombie craze is about to reach critical mass...
- DirectorGuy RitchieStarsRobert Downey Jr.Jude LawRachel McAdamsDetective Sherlock Holmes and his stalwart partner Watson engage in a battle of wits and brawn with a nemesis whose plot is a threat to all of England.A fun reinvention of the iconic hero.
- DirectorUwe BollStarsBrendan FletcherShaun SiposMichael ParéA man with a thirst for revenge builds a full body armor from Kevlar and goes on a killing spree. This movie is seriously stomach-churning. It's very hard to watch a mass murderer go about his business with a straight face. That said, it's a well-crafted film (although it has some questionable logic at times), the lead actor does a good job, and the fact that it's directed by UWE BOLL of all people makes the movie all the more impressive.
- DirectorTodd PhillipsStarsZach GalifianakisBradley CooperJustin BarthaThree buddies wake up from a bachelor party in Las Vegas, with no memory of the previous night and the bachelor missing. They make their way around the city in order to find their friend before his wedding.A funny concept that maximizes its potential and its cast to produce some big laughs.
- DirectorMichael Paul StephensonStarsGeorge HardyPita RayMicki KnoxA look at the making of the film Troll 2 (1990) and its journey from being crowned the "worst film of all time" to a cherished cult classic.A really fun documentary about the hilariously-awful Troll 2. Even better, it tends to be part of a Troll 2 double-bill so it sets the main feature up very well. They're both definitely worth a watch.
- DirectorJohn HillcoatStarsViggo MortensenCharlize TheronKodi Smit-McPheeIn a dangerous post-apocalyptic world, an ailing father defends his son as they slowly travel to the sea.A depressing trek through the apocalypse. Not a bad movie, but it feels very pointless (...or is that the point?).
- DirectorPeter StebbingsStarsWoody HarrelsonKat DenningsSandra OhArthur Poppington, a regular man who adopts a superhero persona, known as "Defendor", combs the city streets at night, in search of his archenemy, Captain Industry.Deceptive marketing aside, this is a pretty good superhero drama, probably the most "realistic" superhero movie out there.
- DirectorJim SheridanStarsJake GyllenhaalNatalie PortmanTobey MaguireWhile on tour in Afghanistan, Sam's helicopter is shot down and he is presumed dead. Back home, it is his screw-up brother who looks after the family. Sam does return, but with a lot of excess baggage.Personally, I think this war-drama is a little overblown. Engaging stuff, but not the sort of movie I enjoyed enough to want to watch again.
- 1999– 44mTV-147.6 (6.7K)TV EpisodeDirectorDominic PolcinoJames PurdumPeter ShinStarsSeth MacFarlaneAlex BorsteinSeth GreenPeter makes good on another power outage at home by retelling Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back. Not as good as the first one, but it has some really funny bits.
- DirectorDavid YatesStarsDaniel RadcliffeEmma WatsonRupert GrintAs Harry Potter begins his sixth year at Hogwarts, he discovers an old book marked as "the property of the Half-Blood Prince" and begins to learn more about Lord Voldemort's dark past.Another entertaining entry in the Harry Potter series, although Michael Gambon's less-than-earnest performance as Dumbledore brings it down a notch.
- DirectorJ.J. AbramsStarsChris PineZachary QuintoSimon PeggThe brash James T. Kirk tries to live up to his father's legacy with Mr. Spock keeping him in check as a vengeful Romulan from the future creates black holes to destroy the Federation one planet at a time.Overrated. Everyone was gushing about this when it came out, but I could never really understand why. It's enjoyable, I'll admit, but not really my cup of tea I guess.
- DirectorTom TykwerStarsClive OwenNaomi WattsArmin Mueller-StahlAn Interpol agent attempts to expose a high-profile financial institution's role in an international arms dealing ring.A strangely flat thriller. Which makes the jaw-droppingly epic Guggenheim shootout all the more amazing. If they had worked in another shootout along those lines, then this might have been a movie worth watching - as it is, I'd just Youtube that clip.
- DirectorMcGStarsChristian BaleSam WorthingtonAnton YelchinIn 2018, a mysterious new weapon in the war against the machines, half-human and half-machine, comes to John Connor on the eve of a resistance attack on Skynet. But whose side is he on, and can he be trusted? Some people will probably disagree, but this was a decent film. Better than the crap-tacular Terminator 3 in any case.
