An absolute sci-fi classic which forces you to evaluate the value of life. Harrison Ford is Rick Deckard a retired cop who is forced back into the force for one last job: to "retire" 5 replicants (robots created to look like humans) who have escaped their colony in order to search out their creator and demand their expiry date be removed, so that they can live longer. The director, Ridley Scott, shows a believable vision of the future without going crazy on the special effects and letting them outshine the story. The DVD is a bit bare of extras, but the film is excellent in itself.

The film alone is a "must own" and it is backed up by some excellent and unique extras on this DVD. Taxi Driver is one of those films where everything just slots perfectly into place and the result is one of the most powerful and breathtaking films ever produced. De Niro gives a superb performance as Travis Bickle, the Vietnam vet, driven to despair by the city around him, before finding redemption in a bloody climax. Scorsese's direction is flawless, as always, and perfectly conveys the emotions of the main character. There is also strong support from Harvey Keitel, Peter Boyle and especially the 12 year old Jodie Foster, as the prostitue, Iris. The film features the last soundtrack by legendary composer Bernard Hermann (Ctitzen Kane and Psycho), who died just a few days after completing it. The DVD is packed with extras including an excellent Behind The Scenes documentry, not one of these thrown together 5 minute jobs either. It's a proper look at the making of the film and comes in at over an hour long. Other features include the original screenplay, for the fanatics, a commentated look at a Photo Gallery and the usual trailers, filmographies etc.

This movie is a lot of fun. Wesley Snipes plays a cool, almost immortal, guy who gets to go round and kill
loads of vampires. This film succeeds because it focuses more attention on the action than vampire
technicalities. And instead of concentrating on the almost obligatory love-interest, it prefers to develop the
far more interesting relationship between Snipes and Stephen Dorff, who is excellent as Blade's vampire
nemesis (who, needless to say, is intent on ruling the world). Blade is also one of the best DVDs,
certainly that I own, with regards to extras. Including deleted scenes and an alternative ending, although
this is not as good as the genuine ending it is certainly better than the joke that is the alternative ending
on the Ronin DVD. All in all this DVD is well worth having.

The thing about the Coen Brothers is that they make films that have a great plot, tight script and are so easy to watch. The Big Lebowski is a perfect example of this. At it's heart it is a twisting and turning detective story, but it has been cunningly disguised as a comedy about a bunch of guys who want nothing more than to spend their lives down the local bowling alley. The dream sequences are unforgettable and there are numerous moments that are absolutely priceless (check out the scattering of the ashes). If you want a laugh, or if you just want to see a great film, get this...and then go bowling. Just a shame that there are no real goodies on the DVD, but then when the film is this good, who needs them?
