- DirectorPeter GreenawayStarsColin CantlieTongue-in-cheek, early Greenaway short reflects the incredibly meticulous encyclopedic nature of his early films. An attempt is made to "reconstruct" a proposed, but never made, film according to some reasonably vague directions. The attempt is made over and over because of conflicting interpretations of the instructions.
- DirectorJ. Farrell MacDonaldStarsJ. Farrell MacDonaldVivian ReedJefferson OsborneKara, the last member of a long list of Egyptian rulers, learns from his grandmother on her deathbed that an Englishman, Lord Roane, had dishonored the daughter of the imperial house, and that in his veins together with the blood of kings flows the blood of the perfidious nobleman. Before passing away she gives Kara the key to the secret burial vaults and treasure chamber. Kara vows to wreak a belated vengeance on the head of the man who sullied his family's honor. He takes with him enough treasures to carry out his purpose, goes to Cairo where he is received as a royal prince, and finds Lord Roane. With Oriental cunning he sees that he can best pierce his enemy to the heart through the nobleman's beautiful granddaughter, Lady Aneth. He asks her hand in marriage, is refused, but still clings to his purpose. Enticing the girl's father to gamble, he ruins him, then offers to restore the winnings if the Englishman will give his consent. The nobleman puts him off, but the prince goes direct to the girl, and threatens her father with ruin unless she agrees to marry him, intending to inveigle her into a mock marriage. To save her father from ruin and disgrace she consents to marry Kara at his palace that night. Winston Bey, her English lover, rescues her before she falls into the Egyptian clutches and hurries her to his yacht and sends her up the Nile. Kara, whose plans for a mock wedding have been completed, hears of her escape, leaves Cairo and at the head of a band of desert robbers attacks, the vessel and makes Lady Aneth a prisoner. The robber chief refuses to deliver her to Kara until he has been paid. The prince hastens to the secret chamber for gold and Viscount Cousinor, Aneth's father, follows him there. A terrific struggle follows. The Englishman overpowers his antagonist, locks the stone door upon the Egyptian and leaves him to perish in the tomb of his ancestors. As the viscount is leaving the tomb he is killed by a slave girl who mistakes him for Kara. Thus is the house of Kara avenged. In the meantime the British authorities hear of the attack on the yacht, and dispatch a column of troops to the scene. Upon their approach the robbers flee and Lady Aneth is restored to her lover's arms.

- DirectorHans-Jürgen SyberbergStarsEdith CleverMartin SperrRobert LloydRichard Wagner's last opera has remained controversial since its first performance for its unique, and, for some, unsavory blending of religious and erotic themes and imagery. Based on one of the medieval epic romances of King Arthur and the search for the holy grail (the chalice touched by the lips of Christ at the last supper), it recounts over three long acts how a "wild child" unwittingly invades the sacred precincts of the grail, fulfilling a prophecy that only such a one can save the grail's protectors from a curse fallen upon them. Interpreters of the work have found everything from mystical revelation to proto-fascist propaganda in it. Hans-Jurgen Syberberg's production doesn't avoid either aspect, but tries synthesize them by seeking their roots in the divided soul of Wagner himself. The action unfolds on a craggy landscape which turns out to be a gigantic enlargement of the composer's death mask, among deliberately tatty theatrical devices: puppets, scale models, magic-lantern projections. The eponymous hero is sung by the specified tenor voice (Reiner Goldberg) but mimed on screen by a male and a female performer alternately, reflecting what the director takes to be the creator's own sexual conflicts. Syberberg's pacing, dictated by the majestic pace of Wagner's score, is slow, but enlivened by constant subtle shifts in point of view, and memorable performances by actress Edith Clever as the villainess/heroine Kundry (sung by Yvonne Minton), orchestra conductor Armin Jordan as the remorseful knight Amfortas (sung by Wolfgang Schoene), and Robert Lloyd (the faithful retainer Gurnemanz).
- DirectorRichard LesterStarsRita TushinghamRalph RichardsonPeter CookIn post-nuclear-holocaust England, a handful of bizarre characters struggles on with their lives in the ruins, among endless heaps of ash, piles of broken crockery and brick, muddy plains, and heaps of dentures and old boots. Patriotically singing "God Save Mrs. Ethel Shroake, Long Live Mrs. Ethel Shroake", they wander through this surrealistic landscape, forever being warned by the police to "keep moving", and prone to the occasional mutation into a parrot, cupboard, or even--yes, a bed-sitting room with "No Wogs" scrawled in the grime on its windows. In particular, this story revolves around the odd "love story" of a girl who lives with her parents in one compartment of a London Underground train, the commuter in the next compartment, and the doctor they meet after returning above ground in search of a nurse for the heavily-pregnant girl.
