One of the very best WWII movies. The Germans speak german and they are not the typical German caricatures but ordinary boys and men.
Most briliant part was the scene where the Russians attack a well hidden German fortification in open field. Also, the city scenes were well shot, giving an idea of the reality of war, in this case fighting for every room and every house.
But than they lose the battle and they start te feel the impact of the enormous distances and the scorcing cold Russian winters. You don't just walk home, there's more to that.

Nolte's performance is great, well casted for this movie. Story is somewhat weak on points.

Sad story about a german girl who quite early in the war (1943) makes pamflets with her brother to express her thoughts about te war and about their führer. Unfortunately their courage is bigger than their patience, resulting in flyering the pamflets at the universit of München without thinking it trough. She gets caught and during interrogation proves to be a worthy speaker with great morality. But you always lose against the state. So did she.
Low budget movie it seems, but the story and the acting are respectively gruwesome and awesome.

This movie is a must see for everyone who likes WWII movies. Not the high hollywood shoot 'n scoot movies, but decent acting of a very good cast. A few flaws in the story, p.e. when they return with some of their squad dressed up as russians they simply could have taken off their clothes and share parts of the other's German uniforms.
And a prussian officer not knowing how to reload a MP44 is highly unlikely since they all had a military training in which they were tought the general concept of reloading a gun. And he was in the field for quit a time at that point in the movie
However, the story is good and depicts the German army at the moment they start to lose campaigns. Not every German was a nazi, not every officer bad (or good), not every soldier impressed by rank.

Third or fourth time I've seen this movie. I like the story, I like the actors playing Patton and Bradley, the sarcastic humor "they will lose their fear for the Germans. By god I hope they don't lose their fear for me".
I doubt that even an abrupt man like Patton would say at every possible occasion that he wants to beat Monty. Off course everyone knew, but the movie makes it almost look like a childish I wanna I have to I'm gonna. Hmmm...
Patton's character symbolises the mutual exclusivity between achieving obvious goals in an efficient and effective way and politics.

First seen this movie some 15 years ago. Liked it than, still like it.
Within the context of the time the movie was made, he special effects are quite ok. You can see by the explosions and fires that they are models, but it doesn't bother too much.
Not knowing what time it is in the control room of this kind of big operation seems highly unlikely. Luitjens is depicted as a zealous fanatic while in fact he doubted the chances of Bismarck's succes and did not like the nazi's (the movie mixes "nazi's" with "germans", a common mistake). An overrated but stil nice movie about Jim, a boy during japanese occupation. He quickly loses his parents in crowds of fleeing citizens. Luckily he gets encamped near a japanese airield,where his favorite airplane the zero is based.
He meets a japaneese boy and meets Basie, who in no way can be trusted.
Lot of loops in the movie (bicycle, choir, I surrender), maybe too many. The character shifts of Jim are not always logic. The plane attacks look nice, although I don't understand why they keep machinegunning an empty runway and why you can see bombs bouncing off the ground.

Three actors I don't really like gathered in one movie: Voight, Schwimmer and Sobieski. Casting therefore brings this movie down one star to 7 for me. Voight hardly has any german physiques, Schwimmer -however great in friends- lacks just that bit of emotion to make his character believable and Sobieski is a not the kind of actress I like, a bit to melodramatic.
Topic of the movie is great, fighting back nazi's regardless of the consequences because the consequences of doing nothing are certain and much worse. The group starts with small arm attacks on random germans. They power up to stop a razzia squad. Therefore the army plans an attack on the now much bigg group(s), which is bravely countered. Twice. But when the artillery comes and shoots down practically everything, it ends in the sewers. But step by step they get weaker, in the end forced to leave. And leavin when surrounded turns out to be almost impossible.
A bit disturbing how the jeweish council tries to cut losses their way. But why didn't they understand that paying for your own captivity means that as soon as the money runs out they will be elminated anyway? It is stalling time, but it is also leveraging wealth to the germans. That money could have been spent so much better. Talking from the sideline here.

The story and the editing make this movie very powerfull, not big budgets and dazzling special effect.
The ventriloquist with his living doll was a nice surprise throughout the movie. Brave by humor. Beautiful Erika Marozsán plays a nice Haya, but is obvious not a singer in real life.
People like the character Gens playing a role during the war which is almost unbelievable to imagine.
Lot's of double layers in this movie, nice for the meta thinkers.
Only question is: why in english? This movie would have been much stronger and even more sinister if it had been in native languages.

Not ending the film with the trial where Capt. Queegs turns out to be not sane, was birliant. The lawyer stated that even while he won the case, he questions what would have happened if the officers had been totally loyal to Queeg. In that case it might have been possible to advise him and he would probably have listened.
Two cons:
- the love story doesn't add anything at all and is a waste of film;
- although great special effects for a 1954 film, during the typhoon it obviously shows that the ship was a model.
8 stars nevertheless for this iconic movie which got Michael Caine (Maurice Micklewhite in rl) his stage name.
