- Summer 1944, Schwäbisch Hall. Against the war propaganda and the ordered heroism, the five 16 year old boys of the swimming pool group dream about swing music, sex and freedom. And they also dream about Lore, the helper from Fliegerhorst, who gets looks from all the boys in her red swimming suit. At the same time they realize there is no chance they can escape the horror at the front. Lore tells them "Remain alive", but Zungenkuss dies first and more won't make it through the war alive.

- In an idyllic Alpine village in the 1980s, an Italian takes up residence in the inn. The locals treat him with suspicion because he takes photos everywhere, makes notes, enters other people's houses unannounced and seems to be digging into the villagers' dark past.
- Lena Lorenz works as midwife in a hospital in Berlin: today was a very hard day,the stress is very strong and she is exhausted.So she decides to travel to her home village, Himmelsruh in the Bavarian Alps.There she will encounter her mother , Eva Mattes who is not very happy to see again her daughter,her grandfather Lero Lorenz is always grumpy and her friend Julia doesn't show many enthusiasm to see her.Soon there is an emergency, a 17 years old pregnant girl will give birth and Lena will assist her in the restaurant of Himmelsruh.Some hours later the young mother abandons the child and disappears in the mountains.
- Lena Lorenz has come back to the Bavarian Alps where her mother Eva and her grandfather Leo Lorenz are living.Eva is waiting for her help in the farm, but Lena has received a call from the professor Ritter for an emergency: by helicopter they go a farm where a woman will give birth ; the childbirth happens without problems.As Lena is afraid of flying by helicopter, she decides to come back to Himmelsruh walking.After some minutes a car drives fast on the road, a great noise, Lena runs towards the place: the car has fallen in a precipice.Lena sees an injured man and calls the ambulance.The go to the hospital: in the emergency room the doctors try to save the life of the driver, but the man dies.In the corridor of the hospital Lena meets Carolina, the wife of the driver Robert Adler and their little daughter Nina.Later Lena 'speaks with Carolina who is pregnant and says that she is ready if she needs helps.On the farm there are great moments of tension; Viz Huber has made a proposal, Eva is quite ready to accept the proposal, but Leo and Lena don't agree with that idea.Lena is still thinking in hi boyfriend Alexander in Berlin, but she has met in Himmelsruh Erzun, the German-Turkish professor.
- Richard, a bastard from Augsburg's immensely rich Fugger family, is raised as novice in a far-way German monastery' school, near his converted Saracene mother Zobeida, but the open-minded abbot's hands are tied when the papal-mandated inquisitor Heinrich Insistoris imposes a reign of heresy-paranoid terror. Zobeida is raped by a frustrated monk, who delivers her to the stake to save his own neck. Grief-maddened, Richard stabs the inquisitor half-blind and flees, but is rescued from death row dungeon by Fugger's discrete minder Eberding, who starts his mundane education to become a trustee in the Fugger mining and financial empire, rising to chief accountant. Richard is obsessed with revenge on the inquisition, hence motivated to help Jakob Fugger, who needs a crusade-friendly pope to stop the Ottoman threat to his Hungarian silver and copper mines, prevent the Holy See falling to another 'witchhunter'.* So they set out over the Alps to prepare the electoral conclave of cardinal Sforza. On the way, Richard falls in hopeless love with gallantly saved gypsy in trouble Saviya, who may even expose Richard to the inquisition and hence compromise Fugger's mission.
