Hawkes goes to San Francisco for a planter's convention and, when he returns, brings back society girl Lucille Cheney (Virginia Cherrill) as his wife. Leilana is heart-broken, while Lucille becomes quickly bored with her husband and Hawaii. Her boredom ends when Chandler Morris (Hardie Albright) sails into port on his yacht and he and Lucille begin an affair. Hawks drinks to forget. He catches Lucille and Chandler together and a fight ensues, Lucille, in an effort, to save her lover throws a kerosene lamp into the ripe sugar cane and fire spreads in all directions.

On the same boat with the "mail-order" brides (Americans Mame Smith and Flo Lane, and Gwen from England and Lena from Europe) is Mary Lee, an innocent, frightened girl who has come to see the mine's brutal supervisor, von Luden, about a job. Knowing von Luden's inhuman reputation, Mame transfers the photo assigning her to Dave Hart to Mary's identification card. Castro, the mail-runner, delivers a letter to von Luden informing him that his partner Hart is wanted in the United States on an embezzlement charge. To protect Mary, Mame presents herself as the job applicant while Mary is introduced to Dave and his fellow supervisors--Peter, Joe, and Bill--as a bride applicant. Dave rescues Mary from a lustful, brutish attack by von Luden. Pretty Mataeo Rogers, half-breed daughter of the camp's drunken doctor, is celebrating her 18th birthday and is lured to von Luden's jungle castle. Later, natives find her body in the swamp. Detectives Steve and Al arrive to extradite Dave.

Lutze is offended. They play poker for a plantation, Ellen, and all the pearls in the Pacific; the loser gets Poppi. Lutz has a marked deck of cards.

Neal, suspecting two of the town's leading businessmen of being the murderers, tries to flush them out before the sheriff can lock him up again.

That night, Robert breaks into the shop's cellar where he hears strange music and voices, and sees a weird ceremony in which (the mesmerized) Zenobia officiates as a priestess. Robert is captured by the worshipers. Dawn tracks the sinister "Order of the Black Rober" but can not find a trace of Robert, Zenobia or the cultists.
- A criminal gang is after a rich man's money. A female member of the gang gets the bright idea of getting him to marry her, then getting a healthy settlement after a quick divorce.

- Notorious Mexican bandit El Malo forces the Mayor of Sierra Blanca, Seth Landport, to open the safe and turn over to him 2,000 pesos, which the bandit gives a promissory note for to the Mayor. Seth rushes to the cantina where Sheriff Rankin is drinking, and the sheriff posts a reward for the capture of El Malo. El Malo informs his men of the reward. The bandit and his sidekick Pedro visit the cantina where Pedro resumes a former acquaintance with Dolores, while El Malo has his attention directed to a tango being performed by Carmita. El Malo pushes her dancing partner aside and finishes the dance with Carmita. Since Seth's description of him is inaccurate, "El May" visits the sheriff and promises to deliver the wanted bandit to the cantina the following night. The next morning, El Malo and Pedro depart and, halting their horses on a hill, they view the stagecoach being held up by a trio of outlaws. They follow the outlaws to their hideout, where they discover the leader is the trusted town-mayor Seth. El Malo tells him to be in the cantina that night. Then things get involved, including the wrath of the displaced tango partner. El Malo handles it all without breaking a sweat.
