- While Zeddicus goes to visit home, Richard and Kahlan find out the killer of some members of the resistance, only to learn that somehow he lied to Kahlan when he confessed his crime. The real killer is still free.
- Richard's party suddenly meets the remaining members of Kahlan's order, who flee General Demmin Nass's troops to the coast to take refuge on a magically protected island to avoid extinction. To Kahlan's amazement it includes her presumed-dead sister Dennee, who very soon gives birth. Instead of the long-hoped new confessor, it's a boy, who by tradition must be ritually sacrificed out of fear he'll grow up as a mighty monster. Richard refuses to allow such cruelty and gets the confession-spellbound father Finn on his side, The order's mother resorts to confessing Zed to enforce execution, but Richard still puts up a formidable fight for innocent life.
- At night, Richard's healthy sleeps changes into a deep trance. Zed soon realizes he's under a rare spell from a great magician, using a short celestial constellation to enable long distance mind control, which can end in death. Indeed, Darken Rahl has been enabled to appear to Richard in any form, notably his step-family, to make him recall his quest as they claim it never happened, in an effort to make Richard tell where the missing box of Orden is hidden. Zed fears rightly he won't be able to break the spell magically, but something else does just before Darken finds out details.
- Richard, Kahlan and Zeddicus travel to an ancient Seeker's crypt to hide one of the Boxes of Orden, only to find that the past is not quite at rest there.
- With Zeddicus again having parted ways with them, Richard and Kahlan encounter Chase. Together they infiltrate the now-under-Darken-Rahl's-rule Hartland, where Richard sees Anna. But a terrible secret lies in the city.
- Richard's attempts to rescue his friends from a sadistic wizard's deadly experiments send him into his first explosive face-to-face confrontation with the evil Darken Rahl.

- King Gregor of Caddock requests the Seeker's help. Earlier, Gregor asked the witch Shota "power to defend the kingdom forever" to drive away the D'harans, but the power had a horrible downside that may stay forever as well.
- With Kahlan and Zed's assistance, Richard sets out to avenge his father's death. But with their way across the boundary gone they may have no way of returning to the Midlands even if they retrieve the Book of Counted Shadows.
- A librarian is close to finding out where one of the copies of The Book of Counted Shadows is hidden. Rahl himself sets out to meet her. But Richard, Kahlen and Zedd are already there. However, something changes the situation completely.
- Rahl sends all his Mord'sith to kill Richard and they strike just as he assembles the Box of Orden. A magic explosion swallows Richard, Zedd is burned to a crisp and Kahlan taken prisoner for Rahl, who wants to make her his queen.
- Richard, Kahlan and Zed journey to Drundril in an effort to retrieve their stolen horses. But once there their efforts to stop the selling of magical potions to villagers leads to Zed's capture by a former student of his.
- With a price on Richard's head, the trio find themselves avoiding assassins who've managed to get maps showing Richard's location. Richard tries to aid a woman in freeing her brother from a monster but things are not as they seem.
- Richard can't resist journeying to his hometown of Brennidon but becomes trapped there when it turns out Darken Rahl's forces have control of the town.
- Richard and Kahlan try to keep a boy with the power to read minds out of Darken Rahl's hands. The task becomes difficult however due to the boy's ability to read their secrets, including how they feel about each other.
- To avert Richard's death at the hands of General Demmin Nass, the powerful Witch Woman Shota causes him to switch bodies with a villager, Gryff, leaving Richard to be married to Gryff's fiancé and the Gryff to stop Demmin Nass.
- General Demmin Nass brings Darken Rahl' s new orders: the seeker must not be killed but captured and enslaved. Richard and Kahlan are totally distracted when she stops his attempt to kiss her passionately but refuses to explain why. Zed can barely escape when Mord-Sith Denna attacks and imprisons Richard in a dungeon, to be subdued by protracted torture designed to make pleasing his dominatrix his sole purpose. Kahlan resigns her post and agrees to swap places with order sister Lara, but discovers she abused her powers to enslave the village she had to protect and reconsiders. When Kahlan arrives, Richard is despairing whether he can keep resisting and pretending to be nearly tame.
- Darken Rahl is planning to find the final Box of Orden, which is being held by Queen Milena of Tamarang. Zedd poses as a puppeteer for Princess Violet's birthday party. Meanwhile, Richard and Kahlan try to find a way to stop Darken Rahl's men from reaching Tamarang.
- Richard accidentally opens a rift to the underworld which unleashes an awful evil.
- Richard, Kahlan, Zeddicus are joined by the Mord'sith Cara on a trip to a death camp to find an abbot with the key to finding the stone needed to close the rift between the underworld and land of the living, and thus prevent the Keeper and Darken Rahl with the dead. While there they discover that the Keeper is recruiting banelings: the dead who he sends back if they agree to kill on his behalf.
- Kahlan and Richard set out to rescue a mysterious girl who is the only other living Confessor, and try to prevent her from accidentally unleashing the power she possesses.
- The witch Shota casts a spell on Zedd which makes him young and forget all his past. Zedd escapes and becomes king of a town which is then threatened to plunge into a rift to the underworld. Cara, Kahlan, and Richard try to find out where he went, and attempt to break the spell on him.
- Using the magical compass to guide their way to the Stone of Tears, Richard, Kahlan, Cara and Zedd come across a camp of Minders. There they come across an ancient magical spell that is connected to Richard and when the Sword of Truth's magic overcomes Richard, Zedd must teach him how to control his rage.
- Richard becomes an unwilling pawn in a plot by the Mord'Sith Denna to control the throne left vacant by Darken Rahl's death.
- Zedd is captured by Denna. During the pursuit, Richard is incapacitated by potentially lethal headaches brought on by the Gift (his latent ability as a Wizard) and must leave with the Sisters of the Light in order to be trained. Kahlan and Cara are forced to continue the pursuit without Richard, while Richard attempts to reach the Palace of the Prophets in the old world.
- Cara meets with Darken Rahl and is forced to conceal a secret from her friends. Zedd's brother reappears, in the latest scam shop of the magical mapmaker we love to hate, and may have a solution for her.
- Trapped in the deadly Valley of Perdition, Richard's worst fears come magically to life and threaten to kill him, while the world's most powerful sorceress, Sister Nicci, plots to murder Kahlan; Cara's feelings for the new Seeker deepen.
- A dead wizard from Aydindril appears. Zedd uses the wizard's amulet to go to Aydindril with Kahlan. Unfortunately, it splits Kahlan in two: with Zedd, a one with reason and powers, and with Richard and Cara, a one without either.
- Richard arrives at the Palace of the Prophets to begin his wizard training. He meets the beautiful and mysterious Sister Nicci who tells him that the other sisters are lying to him. Not knowing who to trust, Richard is forced into a dark alliance with Nicci while Kahlan, Zedd and Cara find and name a new Seeker in Richard's absence.
- When Sister Nicci casts a powerful spell on Kahlan, linking their fates, Richard is forced to protect the evil sorceress while Kahlan has to confront her past in an attempt to break the spell.
- A woman appears, claiming to be the physical manifestation of the Creator, come to judge the Seeker.
- Cara, Zedd and Richard get comical make-overs in an entertaining bid to save Kahlan from an egotistical King, who has converted all of his subjects, including his wife, to his own personal vision of "all that is Right and Good".
